Basic Information
Our encyclopaedia is vast and detailed. That's why this page was designed to give you the basic lay of the land for the empire of Hellas. On this page you'll find key terminologies, basic political, climate and economic information and the land census, with links to all current in-play and open characters within Hellas. Most of the information below will also direct you to other pages where you can read up on the topic in more detail. If this handy overview is still not getting you where you need to go, please don't hesitate to contact a member of our staff team on site or on our Discord server. INSERT SAMPLE VISUALS FROM VISUALS PAGE General Climate INSERT FROM LAND PAGE Method of Rule INSERT FROM LAW PAGE Social Tolerance Hellas is a diverse and fairly open society. There is a strong sense of equality between the sexes despite strong gender role expectations (on both sides) and little to no racial discrimination. Whilst Hellenes may refuse to interact with a disbeliever for fear of divine wrath falling on them, there is no forced conversion or prejudice against those of other faiths. Accepted sexualities are a little more fluid here than in other lands but Hellas is not the most accepting of the lands available. Hellas is a nice medium on the spectrum of tolerance and inclusivity for those who want to explore conflict and diverse opinion without the higher stakes.

For an overview of the social customs and ideals of the Hellenes, see The Hellenes People section of Hellas's Social page.

For more detailed information on the Hellenes' social opinions regarding sexualities, race, neurodivergence and all other forms of prejudice, see the Morals and Prejudices section of Hellas's Social page.

Forms of Address Getting the right form of address is important in Hellas. Not only does it keep the immersion of our era intact, but it saves your character making a costly social faux pas.

Whilst there is no golden rule on when it is acceptable for a character to slip into informal address, a good rule of thumb is the measurement of two social ranks. The Ranks below are listed in order. If your character is just one or two ranks lower than the person they are addressing, it may be suitable for them to use an informal mode of address. Any lower and you are safer sticking with the formal.

Land Census
Below is a quick overview of the open canons, wanted ads and in-play characters in the Hellas land: specifically, the characters who currently occupy positions of power and which roles are still open to be filled by original characters.

For more information on the different roles and levels of authority in Hellas see the Ranks and Hierarchy section in Hellas's Law page.

For the full, canon family tree of Hellas use this link and the 'Find:' function at the bottom right of the page, to find "Minas of Xanthos" as a starting point. You can explore out from there.
Ruling Powers Hellas is comprised of three kingdoms, working under an alliance of peace. Each kingdom is ruled by an autocratic/constitutional monarchy. Technically the monarch of each land has absolute power but they must operate in the best interests of their nobility within the Senate. The legal structure of the Hellenes kingdoms mean that a rebellious nobility can make the execution of a monarch's will near-impossible. So, whilst their decisions are absolute, a monarch's power can be rendered useless if they do not work with their respective Senate of nobles.

Immediate Royal Family 'Immediate royal family' includes all living parents, children, spouses, or siblings of the current monarch of each land. Those born to the extended royal lines grow up as royal-blooded nobility but a social level beneath the immediate families of ruling kings and queens. The following lists are in order of descendance (male first), not age but only include immediate family members. Monarchs with only female children will pass their crown to other, male relatives.

Royal and Noble Families Whilst only one House actively rules each kingdom (currently Xanthos for Athenia, Kotas for Colchis, Mikaelidas for Taengea), any Hellenes House that includes more than one generation of royal blooded members may claim Royal status. For example, if a royal princess is married into a Noble House, that House remains Noble unless that princess gives birth to a second generation of royal-blooded children. The House is then automatically classified as Royal, but will still operate beneath the active ruling House. All other Houses in Hellas are of Noble status.

Provincial Leaders Each province in Hellas is led by a Varónos (baron) or Varóni (baroness). Members of the Royal Houses may be bestowed a barony as part of their dowery (for women) or as training for a future position as Head of House (for men). These barons and baronesses still hold their provincial title but will likely be addressed by any superior title they also hold.

The remaining provinces are ruled by an appointed administrator. This individual (usually male) also holds a title of Varónos and their family is immediately elevated to a Varónos House (Noble House). All Varónos and Varóni are officially Senators in their kingdom's Senate. Anyone holding more than one senatorial position (such as Head of House and Varónos) may cast only one vote in the Senate. Masters in the Senate are also considered Nobility but their families are not converted into Houses.

Below is a table copied from our World Contribution page. Any provinces that are indicated as 'Open' can be claimed by new characters if a member wishes to create a new Varónos (Noble House).

INSERT FROM WORLD CONTRIBUTION PAGE

For a more detailed list of each province and its industry and benefits, see the Province Listings section of Hellas's Land page.
Military Leaders Each province in Hellas has its own military unit. These units may have a diverse range of skills or specialise in one distinct form of combat. Each of these units has a political leader (the baron of the province) and a military leader (the Captain). Each Captain will often have several Lieutenants serving under him, the number depending on the scope of the unit. Lieutenants are often specialised. For example, if a military unit is specialising only in archery, it is likely the Captain will have only one archery Lieutenant. A larger military unit with charioteers, archers and infantry, will likely have three Lieutenants under one Captain.

All Captains answer to either a Commander or a General. Both of these ranks can lead a military operation without a superior on the field. Commanders will often lead multiple provincial units at once. Generals even more so. Commanders answer to Generals but Generals are rare and do not attend every battle, leaving Commanders, often, the highest authority in any operation. Generals answer to the monarch of their kingdom, who is technically Commander-in-Chief of the military, regardless of their own military experience.
