Nestled close to Babylon are the southern fields, where a network of tributaries from the rivers creates an expansive wetland. Here, paddies flourish, their mirrored surfaces reflecting the harsh sun as rice, barley and wheat grow in abandon. The area is always busy, with farmers tending to the crops, planting and harvesting under the watchful eyes of towering date palms. Elevated walkways crisscross this lush landscape, guiding the labourers and keeping them dry as they navigate the wetlands. The air is filled with the earthy scent of fertile ground and the gentle sounds of flowing water.
