Things seemed to be getting more and more interesting around Colchis, with the investigation into the murder of some priestesses of Artemis and the King’s ship being found, he felt like he was about to get a lot busier than he had been recently. He wasn’t complaining, though he preferred combat over what had been happening lately, at least it was something for him and his men to do. Even the down time that he had after everything had proven interesting, though not necessarily in a good way. He couldn’t help the tiniest bit of a frown that pulled down the corners of his mouth as he thought about his run in with that unpleasant man at the taverna a few days ago. The man had left Maleos with a distaste and a hope that he would never come across him again.
He pulled himself out of his thoughts for a moment and his blue-green eyes went back to scanning the faces of the few people who milled around the hot springs. None of them were the one that he was waiting for. He stood in wait off to the side for the woman he had invited to join him that day. He had no plans to use the hot springs themselves, he just knew that it would be a quiet place that the two could talk, at this time in the evening there were few people who used the springs, and those who were there had been slowly leaving since his arrival.
On top of that he thought it would be a good place to meet this particular person, if his guess was correct, the hounds she had with her when he had first met her would be with her again, and most places in the upper levels where he resided would not look kindly upon dogs being there, and he didn’t particularly want to be around the lower levels as night was starting to fall, as they were more likely to be interrupted by drunks or criminals than they were to be able to actually converse.
Though he wasn’t sure how conversation would go with her, she was very odd, her way of speaking was rough and broken. Her more basic ways of speaking and acting were what had made Maleos invite her to come and meet him that day. His curiosity was piqued with her, wishing to know more about who she was and where she came from, as well as just more about her personality. He hadn’t had a whole lot of chance to ask questions or speak to her, the head priestess who had been with them during the entire investigation had been a serious and severe woman, one who had disliked men in the first place. She seemed unhappy to have to come to a man for assistance to start with, Maleos wasn’t about to test her temperament by prioritizing speaking with this strange woman over dealing with the murdered priestesses.
Now that everything had been dealt with in terms of that, he had sent word that he wished to speak with Aedea, and had mentioned for her to meet him at the hot springs that evening. Whether or not she would show up, that was a different question. She didn’t seem to hold the same hate for men as her mentor had, but he wasn’t sure if the high priestess would even allow her out to come and meet the Captain. Perhaps she would insist on escorting Aedea here to see him. He hoped not, he wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to speak to the priestess about in the first place, he didn’t think having a chaperone would make his words come any easier.

Aedea came back from another hunt when she received a message – Maleos, the kind captain of the guard that helped the Priestess with the murders of their sisters wanted to speak with her.
The Huntress was curious about that… it was rare for anybody to want to speak with her, other than with hunting matters. Did the man want to hunt? She was supposed to meet him in the hot springs, which were not ideal for that… but since he was a good man, she got ready to go immediately.
As usual, she didn’t inform Kallista about it. As the best Huntress, she had her own autonomy, and while she was expected to report the important matters, she often did it after the act. She would likely not pleased about meeting with a man, but she would only get nagged about it. They came to understand that it was impossible to control the wild child that was Aedea.
As always, dogs followed her when she exited the temple – this time, there were two, Baklava and Lime. She got on the sadleless horse and began to ride at a leisure pace, being followed close behind with the dogs, and thinking what exactly would he like to talk about…
She arrived some time later, and let the horse to graze nearby. Walking into the hot springs, she saw the man, and approached him with a brisk pace and a smile, “Maleos! Remember? Aedea”, she said rather enthusiastically. As always, she wore her badly stained priestess robes, and the same collar on her neck her dogs wore (and just in case, her bow, arrows and knife).
When she was close to him, she got closer. Perhaps too close, like someone that didn’t know about personal space, and her dogs did the same, though they seemed to be happy to see the man as well, “You help us. Thank!”

He was sort of surprised when he saw her approach and she had no one else with her, though he was grateful for that, as he hadn’t felt like dealing with the severity and judgment from the high priestess he had met last time. He wasn’t happy about being judged among those less honourable men, but it seemed in her eyes a mans actions didn’t matter, and all men were equally bad.
Luckily it seemed as if Aedea wasn’t poisoned by that world view just yet. In fact, she seemed to be rather excited to see him again as she approached him and spoke in her broken language. He couldn’t help but think of her as innocent to the world beyond the temple, though her weapons spoke to the fact that she wasn’t defenceless, he felt a natural urge to protect her from harm.
She was a strange woman, not neat and clean like the other priestesses, especially when meeting with someone, she seemed to hold no care for the dirt that stained her clothing or her wind tangled hair. She also wore a dog collar around her neck, and that was possibly the oddest thing about her, not that he was about to directly ask her about it, he didn’t want her to think that he was judging her by any means. It was quite the opposite, he admired her almost wild attitude towards life and the freedom she seemed to enjoy that most others in society would never experience, himself included. He had to carry himself in a certain manner as a Captain.
“Yes, I remember.” He replied, giving her a small bow, though he stood back up straight quickly as she entered his personal space rather suddenly, along with the two dogs who seemed to take a liking to him. He didn’t want to be rude and step back or move her away, but he was definitely not used to anyone being so close to him. He cleared his throat a little bit, trying to find his words again, her closeness throwing him off. He wasn’t great with people to start with, let alone when they were standing so close to him, he felt himself tense up a little as his discomfort grew a bit.
“You’re welcome.” He replied, shifting back the slightest bit to put a little bit of distance between them, hoping not to offend her in any way. It wasn’t that he wanted to get away from her, had he not wanted to be near her he would have never invited her to meet him, it was just that Maleos appreciated his personal space more than most.
“I trust all is well at the temple now that we have resolved the previous issue?” He asked, looking up for a moment at the others in the hot springs as they stared at her, a couple of them whispering. Maleos frowned just the tiniest bit, he had a good guess what they might be saying about her. And subsequently, he could imagine what they were saying about his meeting with her, not that he cared much for idle gossip. It had no real affect on his life or his career, but he felt a tinge of anger at the idea that they were speaking poorly about Aedea because of her outward appearance.
“Come, take a walk with me.” He said, offering her his arm if she wished to hold onto it while they walked, though he some how doubted that she would even know to do such a thing.
He turned and headed towards the back of the open hot springs area, his pace slow and casual as he was in no rush to really get any where, he just wanted some distance between them and the gossiping onlookers who were lounging in the pools of hot water. When they were a sufficient distance from those gathered at the hot springs, he stopped and looked up at the evening sky, tinged an orange hue from the sun which had begun to set shortly before she had arrived. He stood there silent for a few moments before his attentions turned back to the woman who was with him.
“Have you been well? I know we did not get much of a chance to speak the last few times we saw each other, we were occupied with other matters.” He said, knowing that he would probably do most of the talking in this conversation, which was odd for him.

She smiled a toothy grin when he said he remembered. His help was something she would never forget, and it was something that cemented her opinion that not all men were bad; something that many of her sisters didn’t share. But she did notice that he didn’t seem at ease when she got as close as she liked to get… she chastised herself for it. Most people didn’t like it, and her fellow sisters pointed that out. So, she didn’t try to get any closer, “Sorry”, she offered.
“Yes. Temple is well”, she replied, rather glad because of the fact. The conclusion of the incident was satisfactory, but the sisters were more wary than before, and the combat training was more rigorous, “I train sisters. They fight. No happen again”, if she had something to say about it, she would make sure no more sisters were killed. Now, she felt asking the same would be polite, like many sisters told him, “Things good in quarters?”, she asked.
She was no stranger to the looks she was getting. Everyone always looked, and while she tried to ignore it, it was hard sometimes. Everyone always saw her as different, everyone judged… it was one of the reasons she desired to go back to the wilderness, where no one would judge her. It was clear in her face that she was not pleased, but she decided to not to say anything.
She seemed excited about going for a walk, pretty much like a dog that was offered the same thing. But why was he offering her his arm? Was this customary? She looked at it for a second, and decided to do the same with her arm. Not interlocking them or anything, just offering it like he did, “Yes, walk!”
So they walked, and Aedea seemed quite pleased by it. She enjoyed walks, as well as her dogs that followed them closer behind, panting and sniffing anything that struck them as fancy. They were getting away from people, and while normally she would be wary, knowing about the evil of man, she knew she could trust the captain. They helped her and her sisters before, why would he try to harm her?
She turned and looked at him with her blue eyes, “Yes, me well. Yes, no talk. Important matter. Talk now?”, she asked, not really sure why the man wanted to talk. Not many people wanted to talk with her, or even approach her, “You? You well?”

You well?”
He gave her the Maleos version of a smile, which was mostly just a small twitch of the corners of his mouth, it was very very rare that he expressed anything beyond that little bit. He was glad to hear that the priestesses were training a bit. They would never be proper trained soldiers, but it was good that they knew how to defend themselves at least a little so this didn’t happen in the future. He was hoping that sometime in his near future he would get a promotion, and he definitely wouldn’t have time to help them if it happened again. Though that was wishful thinking and he was trying not to get too ahead of himself with that, especially with everything that had been going on, people were far too distracted to worry about military promotions.
He nodded when she asked after how things were going for him. He wondered if she actually cared or she was just being polite. Did she know it was polite to return a question on how things were going? He wondered how much her fellow priestesses had taught her when it came to social etiquette. The biggest reason he had invited her there was to see if he could figure out a bit more about her and how she worked. He had never really been interested in people or how they acted, but that was mostly because they all acted the same, predictable. She was different. Which was shown when she stuck her arm out in offer to mirror Maleos’. He blinked in surprise but lead her forward anyways.
“If a man offers his arms like that, typically a woman rests her hand on his arm as they walk.” He explained to her, not upset by her actions by any means, he just wanted to let her know. He really only did it because it was considered the polite thing to do when escorting a woman some where, even a short distance like they had gone.
Her broken speech was a little hard to catch what she was saying sometimes, but he got the gist of what she was trying to say to him. He nodded, resting one hand on the hilt of his sword, not gripping it, just resting it there out of habit as they spoke, he hardly even noticed he had done it,
“I am well.” He replied.
“I asked you here to speak simply out of my own curiosity. I have to admit there was no real reasoning behind it, I simply find you to be quite interesting and wished to know more about you.” He explained, shifting a little bit as they stood there.
“Where is it you come from?” He asked, not knowing if she knew, but on the off chance she did, he was interested to know. He would have thought her barbarian, but she did not look like any barbarian he had ever seen. And he had killed a lot of them in his military career.

She looked at him as he explained what she was supposed to do it. Clearly, mimicking him was wrong, and she truly felt ashamed by that. She let out a grunt of frustration and nodded, “Understand”, she said, and moved to grip his arm. It was not a gentle grip, by any means; it was a strong grip, as if she was grabbing a bow or the handle of a sword. She was not sure how hard should she grip, but she guessed it was so neither of them would go away.
“Me happy you well”, she said cheerfully, as it was the polite thing to do. Aedea was probably the person with the least knowledge of etiquette in all of Greece, but she was trying. This man deserved respect and being treated well, because they gave them good help, not to mention that he gave her food. She hadn’t forgotten that particular part.
As they walked, Aedea’s dogs followed them, sometimes sniffing things that interested them, but they remained at a distance. She knew that they wouldn’t go far from their mistress, and if they did, she could whistle and bring them back.
She had to admit she was perplexed at the reason he had to speak with her… was he curious about her? Was she interesting? Not many people outside of the sisterhood offered her many compliments, except perhaps the hunters she knew. They often said she was a great archer, that her dogs were cute, and that sort of praise… but no one said things like that, much less wanting to know about her. She was only known as the weird huntress with the dogs, “Thank, Maleo. Me happy to hear.”
She answered the same she always answered when asked where she came from: “Lands Afar. Remember Colchis. Me Beyond Colchis. Don’t know where”, her first memories were of the wilderness of Colchis, but before that? She only remembered the wilds. She often wondered where she was from, and if there were places with people with pale skin, blue eyes and red hair…

He was confused once more as she gripped his arm hard, as if she was afraid she would fall if she were to let go of him. Clearly, she had a lot to learn in terms of how these minor things worked in society, but Maleos was not going to be the one to teach her. So, he kept quiet about her grip, he would let the next person correct her, if there was even ever another reason for anyone to escort her some where like this. He got the feeling that she wouldn’t be allowed around too many other people who were not the priestesses she lived with.
He nodded a little as she said she didn’t remember where she came from. He wished he could find out, for her sake and for his own curiosity. How was it she had survived? Had she once been a part of civilization before this? He had so many questions about what had happened to her, and unfortunately for them both, she had no answers to any of them.
“Have the priestesses been treating you well? Are you supplied with everything you need?” He asked, though this was more out of politeness than anything, not that she would care if he had not asked, she wouldn’t know what the polite things to do were in conversation anyways.
Without knowledge of her past beyond Colchis, his interest had waned. Not that he didn’t still think she was a nice woman, despite her rough way of speaking, she seemed kind enough, it was just that she offered him no insight into anything of her life beyond the temple.
“Your dogs seem very loyal to you. You must have spent a lot of time training them.” He said, recalling that the last time he had met her, she had also had dogs following her. Maleos never really saw the appeal to the beasts, but he supposed that as a hunter she would find them useful, though her connection to them seemed to be more than that. She was not hunting when she had first come to the barracks with the other priestess to ask for his help, and she was not hunting now, and yet the animals had been following her both times.

Aedea seemed happy. She was not the kind of people to socialize like this, much less with men, so many social cues and customs evaded her. But since Maleos didn’t correct her, so she thought that she was not doing something wrong this time. She was making progress! So her face shaped into a smile.
“Yes”, she replied rather cheerfully, “Sisters good to me. Always good”, she concluded that he wanted to know about her, and her story, so she decided to share it with the captain, “Sisters found me young in wilds. Dogs and wolves only family. No name. Didn’t trust sisters. Then sisters treat me well. Give me food and drink. Then I trust them. Then they took me to temple. I was Aedea; blessed by Artemis. I no read, no write, no speak, no hunt. Sisters taught me. Now I read, I write, I speak, I hunt. Me Huntress now. Best Huntress.”
She hoped she explained herself better. But she knew people had trouble understanding her... many people mentioned that her speech was ‘stunted’, whatever that meant, and that she would never speak normally. And it was difficult for her. The sisters understood her well, because they knew her, and got used to her way of speaking… many people, however, didn’t, especially when she tried to convey long stories.
At the mention of her dogs, she stopped walking, and made a gesture for one of them to come near. The dog stopped whatever he was doing and trotted happily towards them. She petted him behind the ear, and looked at Maleos as if inviting him to do the same, “Yes, dogs loyal. I the alpha. I breed them. I train them. I close to them”, as if to make emphasis, she pointed to the collar she wore. It was identical to the ones of her dogs; leather with spikes, the kind they wore so wolves wouldn’t attack their throats, “When I young, dogs only family. They still family. Now, me the alpha.”

He listened to her story and nodded. It made sense, the way she spoke and carried herself, it was primitive at best. He had killed barbarians who held themselves less savagely than she did, but he did not judge. She was not raised in society as most were, and at least she was making an effort to learn instead of shunning everything. She had a fairly okay grasp on words, at least enough to understand Maleos and for him to understand her for the most part. He was sure she would pick more up the longer she spent among civilized people.
“I am glad to hear they found you and took you in. You seem happy to be among them, and that is what is important. You will learn the rest over time.” He commented.
He looked at the dog as she called it over and it came, he had never been too fond of the animals, and he was sure if the dog knew that he had sacrificed its kind to his God before, it would probably not be fond of him either. Luckily neither the animal nor Aedea were likely to know the traditional sacrificial animal for Ares, and he was not about to mention it to her or her animal. He paused for a few moments, clearly unsure about the animal before his hand reached up to touch it, patting it a few times before he dropped his hand once again. That was enough interaction with the animal for him.
Her close bond with them made sense if her story was true and she had been living among wolves in the wild, if that was what she knew, then it would be what she was comfortable with. Taking her from the wild and shoving her into society would be much like taking someone from society and shoving them in with the wolves she had lived with. It would not be an easy transition, and Maleos couldn’t help but wonder if she would have been happier to remain in the wild where she had come from.
He looked at the sky, it was rather dark now, and he supposed that the priestesses would notice her missing and ask questions. He didn’t want to get on their bad side, though he supposed he already was just for being a man. “Thank you for joining me and talking with me.” He said, turning to her once more.
“I should let you get back to the temple, the others I’m sure will be worried if they find you have gone missing.” He said, motioning for her to follow as he began the walk back to where their horses had been left.
“If you are in need of anything, please do not hesitate to write me and let me know. I will do my best to provide assistance in any necessary matters.” He said as they approached their animals, he patted his horse before taking its reigns in his hands, waiting to mount it until Aedea was seen off safely from their meeting spot.

“Yes”, she agreed, “I happy. I accepted. I have purpose”, she didn’t say this to him, but while she seemed to make progress and she was always grateful of the Sisters, she sometimes wished she was back in the wilds, just hunting and living under the sky, like Artemis intended her to be. But she couldn’t leave her family, and her faith. So she stayed, and did what she was told, for the most part.
She watched intently to see how Maleos interacted with the animal. The dog wasn’t defensive, so she was at ease as well. Most of the time, she judged people based on her hound’s reactions, and so far, the captain has been favorable. So when he patted his head, she nodded, pleased, “Good”, she said approvingly. The dog scampered once his role was fulfilled, and they continued walking.
Aedea turned to him, and offered him a smile; it was not soft, it was one of her smiles that showed a bit too many teeth, “Thank you. I enjoy company and talk. I make new friends”, that was something she valued greatly; the friends she made outside of the temples. They were mostly hunters that learned to know her and work with her, and she sometimes was the talk on taverns. One thing they knew is that she was undyingly loyal.
“Sisters no concern”, she reassured, “I leave sometimes. I always return. No many questions”, but she agreed that it was turning late, and that Maleos didn’t seem to have anything else to ask her, “Will do. I say same. You write me, I go”, with a quick jump, she got over her horse and gave him another of her smiles, “Bye, Maleos. We meet again”, and with that, she was off, followed by her hounds.
