“I..couldn't tell you” Silanos admitted. His memories of the preceding night were sketchy at best, but he too had enough experience with wine to attribute the worst punishments to drinking poor offerings. He quirked a brow at talk of Opium, he had yet to find a reliable source in Colchis so that little bit of information was worth holding on to. Not for now though. Now he’d just like to lie quietly and feel sorry himself.
But even that was too much to ask when his host introduced his reptilian friend, and the Valaoritis Lord made his hasty retreat from the kline that was more an undignified scramble really. He looked on doubtfully as the Thanasi rose and went to retrieve the snake, letting it coil around his arm like some kind of ornament.
Yeah, he was weird.
Sil’s return smile was a little hesitant, but he was curious enough about his colourful new friend - and if he were honest, too hanging to face relocating - to accept the idiosyncrasies of keeping a pet snake in his chambers. The sudden burst of movement had not been kind to his already aching head and just not moving seemed like a good course of action right now. As long as it stayed away from him, which seemed viable given it had now been deposited on the bed “Lets..uh, avoid having to turn to your solution” he said, slowly pushing to his feet and keeping a wary eye on the serpent even as he addressed Mihail. “ It’d be a shame if I survived this hangover just to be dispatched by tha….by Draco”
Whatever, snake or no, Lord Mihail of Thanasi seemed to be offering a refuge that was much more pleasant than getting harangued by Timaeus at home, and he might be a good sort of fellow to have around if what he said about wine and opium was true.
Sil took another sip at the water he’d set to the side. Whilst his stomach still churned a little uneasily, the liquid hadn’t made a return appearance so that could only be considered a win. He wasn’t so sure about the eggs, but Mihail seemed so convinced. Plus when he thought about it, Silanos couldn’t remember when he’d last eaten something. Eggs. He could do this.
“We shall see” he mused, prodding at the eggs with his eating utensil. Worst that could happen, he’d throw up over his new friend’s kline and maybe they wouldn’t stay friends. He’d lived through more shameful exploits than that so Silanos wasn’t too worried. On the flip side, maybe he might feel better and that was as good a motivation as any. With the sort of resolve he imagined his brother might wish he had about other things, Silanos began shovelling the eggs down, slow and steady.
They were surprisingly good, so it wasn’t an unpleasant exercise, and equally shocking was the fact that his body seemed to welcome the offering of something other than alcohol, reminding the Lord that actually yes, he was fucking hungry and why in Hades hadn’t he eaten something sooner.
When he was done, Sil flopped back and rested a hand on his stomach which felt much less ill at ease now. “You’re a fucking genius Mihail.” he sighed “Where have you been all my life?”

The fact that Silanos could not answer Mihail's question for apparent lack of memory implied to the Thanasi lord that the wine must indeed have been of inferior quality. Of course, there had been many occasions when he had drunk so much that he lost all sense of himself and could not recall the event the following day, and that had still been with fine wine, but he found that the majority of occasions, it was drinks of lesser quality which made him suffer. If they were now to be friends, then perhaps he would be able to introduce the younger man to something better. It appeared they had similar tastes, at least.
"Yes, I have noticed that his venom appears rather unpleasant," the lord replied, his tone nonchalant, as though this were a perfectly reasonable statement with no cause for concern. He did not commonly make use of Draco as a weapon - the snake would be far too easy to trace - but he had tested the creature's abilities before, and had seen what the serpent could do to others. Even without his current headache to consider, Mihail supposed that Silanos would not wish to suffer the pain of being killed by the viper. "But as I said, you shall be safe."
Mihail was moderately surprised that his new friend was so glad to eat the eggs provided, even though he had made clear that he was not so bothered by the Thanasi reputation. Still, he dropped himself to a seat on his bed as the other ate, positioning himself carefully to not disturb Draco, leaning back against the wall and pulling one leg up to rest across the other. Silanos certainly ate fast. Mihail did not think he had ever once eaten anywhere near that fast (else Nethis or Father - or Mother when she had been alive - would have had something to say about it) but, then again, he had never been a particularly hungry individual.
He smirked at the compliment, glad that somebody could acknowledge his intelligence when so few did not. "Oh, I have been around. I spend most of my time in Midas, though I admit I do not visit the hot springs all that often." The only reason he did was to flirt with others, even if it had not worked that day. "I suppose I spend a fair amount of time in Nethisa as well; the baron and I are great friends, and you would not imagine the events we throw there. You would adore it." That was likely true, given the little he knew of Silanos thus far. "Perhaps the next time we hold an event, I shall invite you." It would not be any trouble, since the baron barely had a say in the matter.
It had clearly been a rhetorical question, however, but Mihail supposed it would help to express where he had been in case the Valaoritis was ever in need of his help again. The reaction to the meal was a satisfying one, and the man could not help but smile. "Feeling better, then? I told you I know what to do, given how frequently I have found myself in the same situation. I suppose we shall not have to call my sister anyhow." His eyes shifted to the door, jovial expression slipping from his features as he considered that the attractive man's need of him was finished now. "I suppose you shall likely leave now that your troubles have been sorted? A shame."

Sil half-listened to the Thanasi Lord talk half drifted in a satiated, drowsy haze on the kline which was so much more comfortable than standing up. He would’ve been quite content never to move again, just to lie nice and still so his head didn’t hurt and he didn’t have to worry about rudimentary things like walking. The eggs had settled surprisingly well in his stomach so he didn’t feel nearly so queasy and the headache subsided until he shifted his head, so it just seemed the wisest course of action to stau where he was.
“Mhmm” he managed in response to the other’s talk of Nethisa, cracking one eye open to glance over toward Mihail. He was never opposed to an invite to a party, no matter who it was from. “What kind of events? My imagination can be pretty damned wild sometimes.”
The guy didn’t seem so bad if you didn’t dwell too much on the little eccentricities, and gods, they had one life...if this lord wanted to live it whilst wearing women’s chitons then who was Silanos to judge. He’d come across stranger proclivities truth be told, though they were probably stories for a later date.
But he still wasn’t a fan of the snake.
When Lord Mihail made mention of not calling his sister, Sil debated feeling disappointed about that - there wasn’t one of the Thanasi women that he wouldn’t roll over for if they asked. They all had that fair-skinned, dark-haired thing going on. Same with the young lord though Sil noted with some relief that he didn’t think he wore it quite so well. “ I mean, if she’s around, you can get her to come to check on me. I don’t feel all the way better” he suggested idly staring up at the fabric that had been draped around the room, giving it a very theatrical feel. “This is different” he observed with a wave of his hand. “Sort of reminds me of one of those smoking dens.”
He was quite content where he was and hadn’t entertained the idea of leaving any time soon, so when Mihail mentioned it, Silanos thought it was a hint, and he sat up, shooting a surprised look at the other. “Sure...I can go. Don’t want to get under your feet or whatever.”
Though maybe he stood up a little too quickly because he somehow managed to catch his foot on the small table next to the kline and the whole thing wobbled, sending its contents tumbling to the floor. There was a shattering noise that made his head hurt, and the Valaoritis lord grimaced as he turned to look at the remains of some little pottery piece that had smashed. “Fuck! Sorry” He squinted at it and tried to work out what it might have been before it was in lots of pieces and shot an apologetic look at his host. “Was that...treasured? Can we say not? Because if it was then that’s a shit way to repay your hospitality”

"Oh, all manner of things," Mihail replied, rather nonchalantly. It would have taken far too long to explain each of the many types of parties he had held at the Nethisan baron's expense. He raised a painted fingertip to his lips, tapping them thoughtfully as he considered which to mention. "Drinking and celebrations and some darling symposiums and..." He hesitated for a moment, dropping his gaze on Silanos and allowing his tongue to flicker out in amusement, waiting to judge the other's reaction to his admittance. "Mm, once or twice we held a little orgy. I have never been surrounded by so many muscular men and, hm, lovely ladies as those nights."
He raised an eyebrow at the suggestion that his room mirrored a smoking den, though he did not disagree, given that he spent a fair amount of his time doing exactly that. The room had been decorated in an odd blend of elegance and those same drapes, but it suited Mihail perfectly, even if it did not the rest of his family. Not one Thanasi had ever made much of an effort to have their quarters match the rest of the home.
The lord smirked, more from satisfaction than entertainment, resting his head on one hand as he looked around. "Yes, I suppose it does. I try to make things rather more comfortable for Draco, you understand. It is only a helpful coincidence that he and I appear to have such similar tastes." Mihail shrugged, which was not quite simple in his half-reclined position. "If you wish to smoke, though, I suppose I can spare a little opium. It is no trouble." Perhaps not the most fantastic idea after all the drama the man had been through with his drink-induced headache, but there was no fun in logic.
He had not meant his comment as a request for the other to leave, and sat up in objection as the other made to move, the action coinciding with Silanos's own sudden movement. Mihail's gaze followed the sound of the crash to land on the broken pieces of pottery on the ground, thoroughly uncertain as to what it must have once been. "Likely some trinket I stole from Nethis, or Mother some twenty years ago. I do not tend to leave my valuables lying around carelessly." It was probably one of the many half-used pots of cosmetics he left lying around his chambers. He waved a hand dismissively. "I shall have someone tidy it later."
Mihail did not really want his new friend to disappear so soon - the baron of Nethisa was his only human friend thus far, and he was quite sure the man was only so compliant because his sister had requested it. "Now, back to our previous subject...did you wish to stay for a smoke or not?"

Perhaps not the most fantastic idea after all the drama the man had been through with his drink-induced headache, but there was no fun in logic.
Silanos wasn’t terribly shockable, he was generally game for trying most things, and if it wasn’t for him? Well live and let live. So he didn’t offer much more than a sideways glance and a lifted brow as the Thanasi lord mentioned orgys as amongst the things he had enjoyed in Nethisia. “Is that so?” he drawled “Well it sounds like you have yourself quite a sweet little arrangement there then.” Maybe Mihail was a guy worth keeping around.
Suppressing a yawn, he was only minorly disappointed that the other didn’t bite at his invitation to have the man’s sister attend him anyway. He was sleepy and full and probably looked like a wreck anyway. Possibly not his best odds for seducing a Thanasi. He did turn his head to survey Mihail when the lord spoke of decorating for the snake’s comfort. “Uh, sure” he said before looking slightly more alert and interested when smoking was mentioned.
It was likely a bad idea given his overindulgence of the night before, but Silanos rather championed the bad ideas club, and so he was not averse to the idea but then the other lord seemed to suggest he leave and the whole ensuing mess with broken pottery happened instead.
Relieved that his host didnt seem too distressed by the breakage, Silanos squinted at him when he offered a smoke again, and he looked vaguely confused for a moment before plopping back down on the kline he’d just vacated. If the offer stood then he was in, because he really didnt want to moving if he could avoid it. And he hadn’t smoked since he’d been back in Colchis so it just seemed rude to turn down the opportunity.
“Well I guess I don’t have anywhere to be. If you aren’t kicking me out” he said with a shrug. Silanos didnt have the same issues making friend as the Thanasi lord. He tended to pick up companions pretty easily and put them down just as quick without any il- effects. Though he was surprised his path hadn’t crossed more frequently with the lord before him now it turned out they had some similar interests. After checking where the snake was, he kicked up his feet on the kline and glanced at his host once more.
“So where do you get your opium, if you don’t mind me asking?” Silanos could do with finding a good source himself.

It rather was a sweet arrangement, if in part because the unwitting baron of Nethisa was willing to allow the young lord most of what he desired or required whenever he visited. That, of course, was singularly due to the virtue of him being a member of the house which ruled over that particular province, and Nethis's well-placed words, but who was he to complain when things were able to go the way he desired with so little interference?
"It is rather fine. As I said, I would more than glad to invite you to one of our events." There was never anything wrong with extending one's guest list when they could be assured that the new attendees would be able to provide nothing more than genuine entertainment. Some of the other parties who appeared at the Nethisan affairs could be such a bore otherwise, after all.
As he stood from his seat, Mihail took a moment to stretch his arms out long behind his back, half-emitting a yawn which he covered up out of little more than vague consideration for his guest (though it felt as if they were somewhat past that point by now). Crossing the room, he glanced lazily around to attempt to recall where he had placed the thin silver smoking pipe earlier that same day. He had not been in the most transparent state of mind when he had finished smoking, as felt entirely understandable, and it felt a long while before he found the pipe in question, half-hidden between his dainty bottles of cosmetics and discarded accessories.
Holding the pipe out to his guest, his grip tighter than intended as he was so subconsciously uneager to hand it out uncharacteristically. "Do enjoy. I can assure you that it shall be the best you have ever had." That was no lie, for Mihail was thoroughly sure of the high quality of his drugs, and they were the one thing about which he would never wish to lie. "And if it is not, then I shall have a due word with my suppliers." It would not take much more.
The Thanasi returned to the table of cosmetics to take Draco back into his arms, finding the feeling of the serpent to be a comfortable enough replacement for the cold feel of the pipe between his fingers. He allowed the viper to wrap itself indifferently around his arm, legs tucking beneath him as he positioned himself to rest half-sideways against a soft pile of elegant cushions piled haphazardly on the bed. "I prefer to have all my opium brought over from Nethisa, as I am certain you can understand. There is no better place." Besides, it was the type of place where they would not ask any questions or deny him the product he desired, and he could not resist.
Watching the way the snake moved indolently, as if in an amusing mirror of the slow movements that the pair of men would indeed exhibit when exposed to the drug they shared, Mihail reached for another question. He was glad to have made a friend - of sorts, since such a relationship could not yet be named with full certainty - and he did not quite wish to lose him too early on. "How long shall you be in Colchis? I should like to know if you shall be available some other time, as I have rather enjoyed this little meeting thus far, and it would be a shame not to have another get-together, no? I do hope I am not being excessively forward in my request."

Silanos gave a vague nod: he was not in the habit of turning down invitations to parties. Not if they were thrown by anyone worth knowing anyway, and this Thanasi lordling had proved amiable enough company thus far. A good opinion that was inflated considerably the moment Lord Mihail offered over his smoking pipe. Sil tilted his head and gave a lopsided grin as he accepted it, it would definitely take the edge of his headache, so it was almost medicinal really.
“Thanks. Most generous of you Mihail” People who shared their intoxicants freely were Sil’s kind of people. He had a bad habit of burning through coin quickly because he was the first to buy wine for everyone, and then when he’d imbibed the wine, was the second and third and fourth to buy wine for everyone too. He didn’t mind; life was for enjoying after all, though it had been rather shocking to physically run out of money in Taengea.
Still, that wasn’t anything he had to worry about right now, and he leant forward far enough to catch hold of a candle with which to light the pipe, before stretching back and waiting for the inevitable rush of euphoria as he took a long slow pull. Aaah. There.
Letting his head lop back against the rolled edge of the kline, the young lord watched through slitted eyes as his host went to retrieve the snake again. It was a strange friendship, he mused, and certainly not one he’d be interested in fostering, but then there were some strange rumours about the Thanasi Dynastaie and its people.
“Why doesn’t he bite you?” he asked with a loose armed wave toward the coiled serpent. “Did you take its fangs out?”
Some did, he’d heard. Those..street performers who claimed to tame the creatures with flutes. Maybe Lord Mihail had done the same thing. It would explain his nonchalance about the thing. Really though, Silanos didn’t care overmuch, not as the Opium took effect and settled over him like a warm blanket of contentment. He felt loose-limbed and languid, the painful after-effects of the previous night’s adventures nothing but a distant memory as the drug took hold. Lazily, he held the pipe out towards its owner, turning his head as Mihail posed a question and there was a pause as Sil contemplated making his lips move so he might answer.
“You’re so very formal with your words. Your tutors must have loved you” he teased lightly, mimicking the Lord’s tone before he gave a half-shrug that almost seemed like too much effort. “I live here. So..uh, yeah, I think Imma probably be around a while. We can get together again. Especially if you’re bringing this shit.” He gestured toward the pipe. “I’ll bring some girls. You do..like girls, right?”

The words were enough to elicit a small gasp of shock from Mihail as he turned to face Silanos, unconsciously moving the snake closer to him as if to protect it. He knew full well that specific (grotesque) individuals preferred to take out the fangs of their serpents, but why anybody would choose to do so, he could not understand. They were vastly different from humans, and they meant well always — in truth, they only became dangerous when they were in danger — so there seemed no cause for harming them otherwise. The mere idea of something so horrific seemed foreign to Mihail, even despite the abnormal worldview on which he had been raised that usually did not shy away from injury.
"I would never!" he exclaimed, frowning at his companion, thumb resting on Draco's head in that protective manner of his. "He is my darling, and he deserves nothing but the best, which does not include the removal of any parts of his body. I adore him." That was true. Mihail cared much more for the serpent than he did for most people, and certainly tended to treat it far better. "He does not bite me because I do not pose him any threat. Rather, I care for him. I give him whatever he needs and protect him from harm. I do not cause it."
It was not quite a difficult concept to understand, though repetition had felt necessary while their minds were in the impaired states caused by drink or drugs or hangovers or a combination of such factors. Mihail did not want his love for the snake misunderstood.
He took the pipe back when it was offered, taking a long drag to soothe himself as he acknowledged the other's compliment, so he supposed it must have been. "Yes, well, I am certain my tutors were glad finally to have a competent student, particularly after my idiotic brother, though you would be stunned by the simplicities I was forced to teach myself." Mihail would have expected more from those hired to educate the royal houses of Colchis, but he liked to suppose that not all people could be as intelligent as he.
Mihail shifted his position somewhat, lying back and glancing at his friend — it was so strange to use the word regarding somebody other than his pet — with a brighter smile than usual, already falling into a better state of mind as the drug began to take effect. He could not help but laugh at the question, though he supposed he understood where Silanos came from in asking. "I do. Men, women, I do not care. It is the pleasure that matters, no?" It did not seem illogical to him, though he had found that many did not share his views on plenty of subjects, including this one. "I can bring whichever drugs you wish. I should like to offer you our best, you understand." He could be generous to his friends, he supposed, if he only had the two.
"Why did you return from Taengea?" he asked suddenly, the mood for information striking him as he took another long heave on the pipe before offering it back. "I so often find it is better suited to those like us. I would stay myself, I think, if I did not care for my sisters enough that I did not wish to leave them behind with the horrors of the rest of my family." Not that he could imagine such a thing applied to Silanos, knowing his brother as vaguely as he did.

Silanos blinked owlishly at Mihail as his host seemed to take offence at his question. How odd. And much as he could commend the other’s bravery in handling what was a deadly creature and showing so little concern, Sil couldn’t say he shared the view. Still, as long as the snake was over there and not near him, then he supposed Mihail could do what the fuck he wanted. “Alright. If it makes you happy, I guess.”
When he’d handed over the pipe, Sil flopped back, stared up at the swathes of deep red fabric that hung overhead and sighed in contentment. The Thanasi’s voice was sort of soothing as background noise, and the younger man let himself drift a little as the other spoke, half-following what was being said but without any concerted level of focus.
Silanos had always been a bit of a lazy student. Bright, but easily distracted. Capable but lacking commitment and resilience. That’s what his tutors had said. And Sil couldn’t very well argue with it. He did the bare minimum to be able to turn something in so he could escape and do stuff that was more fun, and he’d never really had to try very hard. But it wasn’t like he was going to have to use any of the drudgeries he’d been forced to learn. His brothers...well. Responsibility like that should never have been headed Sil’s way. It was the spite of the Gods that had seen it land differently and right now? Well, he was still playing chicken with the future that Timaeus wanted for him now.
But that was not a worry for now. In fact, there were no worries for now, and Sil gave a nod of agreement to Mihail’s talk of pleasure because yes, that was exactly it. They didn’t have forever after all, so fun should be had where it could be found. “Bless you soul” he mumbled in return to the other’s offer to only supply the best drugs he could find. Mihail was a rare treasure, Sil decided right then.
‘Why did you return from Taengea?’ The question had the Valaoritis lord twist his neck and settle hazy blue eyes upon his companion. He frowned slowly, reaching to take the pipe back and drawing long on it as he considered his answer, watching the smoke drift lazily toward the ceiling.
“Uhh... let's say I got a little close to burning through available resources. Besides...places, people.. get boring after a while. I like to change it up. When were you there?”
Mihail’s description of his family had a languid chuckle escape the other, and Sil eyes him again, gave a long-suffering sigh. “That is a feeling I can appreciate.”
Timaeus was a horror. He hadn’t always been, but since Nikos..even before really. Silanos’ elder brother seemed to determine to squish the younger into a shape that didn’t suit him at all, and Sil was back to digging his heels in again. “Who’s decided to make your life a misery?”

Mihail nodded in response to Silanos's answer, as though he could relate to the possibility of burning through his resources. He did not think he had ever spent long enough elsewhere that he would be provided with his own set of resources, and even if he had, he did not believe there was a chance he could finish them. Still, solidarity fostered friendships, and he could at least understand the idea of other people and places growing dull. He found that was the case often enough, and supposed it was part of the reason why he had so struggled to make any friends before now.
"I have been every year for almost a decade now," he answered, trying to recall when his first trip to Taengea had been. Sometime around the age of fifteen, he imagined, when he had first grown interested in all the fancies of wine and other such vices, and had begged his middle sister to take him on one of her many trips. "Oh, it must be my favourite time of year. The people there are so much more reasonable. Rarely is there anywhere else I can so openly be myself." It was lovely. Mihail could not help but smile just thinking of the place. If only the rest of Greece could be so kind.
It might have been strange that he had never before managed to bump into Silanos at one of the frenzied festival events, or at all during his countless times in Taengea, but Mihail was always so distracted after his wine-and-drug-fuelled dalliances there, that he was hardly surprised. He may well have bumped into the younger man without noticing.
Misery. That was a fair question. The youngest Thanasi probably could not consider his life to be a genuine 'misery', but he could pinpoint certain things that he would change. He followed the other's gaze as it chased the pipesmoke up to the ceiling, half-distracted by the patterns carved above them before he answered. "My brother, primarily. My father as well, I suppose, when he is feeling well enough to chastise. Neither can understand me, and I do not believe I wish them to. Still, life would be finer without their input." He shrugged, not thinking too much of it. There were always his sisters when he felt otherwise awful, and they had never let him down. "It is always older brothers, no? I believe they have some predisposition to be awful to their younger siblings. Some sort of silly complex created by the knowledge that they shall always be the lesser-liked one."
Complaining about Dysius was always entertaining, especially when it was with somebody who understood. That was a rarity outside of his sisters. He frowned for a moment, gaze shifting back down to rest on his new friend. "Perhaps we might have this conversation another time as well? I would love to see your home as well. It would be nice to attend an event I did not have a hand in organising." Not that Mihail wished to sound thoroughly pathetic, but he liked the idea of having an invitation of sorts, and sometimes it was easiest to request it outright. "Besides, I should like to see what sorts of drink you have at yours that caused you a headache as awful as the one you had when we met today."

It was difficult not to miss Taengea. Life had definitely been easier there, for the most part. Now Sil felt like Tim was always breathing down his neck about something or another and he didn’t even know the worst of it. So yes, he looked back on his time on the green isles with some fondness.
‘They sure as shit know how to have a good time over there, yeah’ he agreed with the Thanasi Lord. And then he brightened, momentarily forgetting why he’d left Taengea. “We should go on a trip there together sometime. Make a holiday of it’. He already felt like he needed one even after being back in Colchis so little time.
And yes, he bloody well would blame his stupid brother for a good part of that, Silanos sighing heavily as Mihail bemoaned his own sibling in a similar fashion. He gave a snort of a laugh at the others explanation for the older brothers behaviour. “Maybe, maybe you’re right there. I shall put it to my brother next time he is being a killjoy. Jealousy is very unhealthy, after all”
Using his finger to carve absent patterns through the haze of smoke that was beginning to settle around them, Sil pulled a face at the idea of hanging out out at his residence, only because it was usually where Timaeus was too which was the quickest way to ruin any chance of a good time.
“ Hey look, my home is your home, but I can’t , unfortunately, guarantee that Tim wont be around scowling at everything and anyone.’ He half-pushed up onto an elbow to turn a curious glance at Mihail then. “ What’s the deal with you two anyway?”
All Sil knew was that his brother was very vocal about the rumours that swirled around the Thanasi House and that he never had a good word to say about the youngest in particular. He wondered what had gone on to provoke such bitterness, and for a moment considered how amusing it would be to bring Mihail around solely to get under his brother’s skin. But then...urgh, as Head of House, Tim had the ability to make Sil’s existence pretty damn miserable now so maybe he shouldn’t antagonise him.
Shame.
“You know, if I’m bringing you to my house and you get to hang out with my brother, then I must insist we get to see your sisters too. Fair is fair after all”
He passed the pipe back toward Mihail and folded his hands behind his head. “ There is talk of them being witches, I’m sure you know. Well I am ready and willing to be bewitched, you can tell them.
