It was a beautiful kingdom, in its own way. The rocking cliffs and the mountains were incredibly breathtaking. She’d never seen anything like it, and the family had gone out of their way to make sure she was able to explore as much of the land as she wished. That part, she was sure, was due to Vangelis, who wanted to make sure that she had her fair share of adventure.
He was thoughtful, which was a bit unexpected. Not only did he make sure that she had a horse and someone to ride with whenever she needed it, but he’d also told his brother Silas of her love of music, which meant that he made sure that she knew her way to the music room. She was really beginning to see how her life had been so different than that Kotas family’s had. And it had nothing to do with being royal and everything to do with birth order and gender. They were a refreshing change from the house full of women, even though she missed her sisters dearly. They had such a vastly different dynamic, and yet it was easy to see that so much of one’s personality came from birth order. She was the oldest, and thus like Vangelis, was the most responsible. And like Theo, Zanon was more playful, able to let his creativity and personality bloom underneath the relaxation of the parents. And even Silas reminded of her own Nana, in his own way.
They were loud. They were opinionated. And they were welcoming and warm. For a house that had such a reputation for its harsh mentality and strength, she had seen it in a far different light.
Dressed in her riding chiton of burgundy, Selene had requested that the Princess Athanasia honor her with a meeting in the courtyard. She had taken to a far simpler dress while she was here, preferring to leave her jewels off in favor of the freedom of her hands. It didn’t feel right to be dressed so finely when half of the city was recovering from the storm.
When she had received the letter from her uncle, she couldn’t help but notice the unsettling undertones of it. Ones that she would only know as family. He was pleased that she had ended up in the house of the royal family, and he was going to do everything in his power to make sure that she knew that she was to stay with the royal family as long as she could, without seeming like a burden. It was a pressure, one that he had been sure to let her know that he trusted her to be of use to the family. The letter had brought a chill to her spine, but the gifts had seemed even more pointed.
The mare, well enough, was demure and obedient. Selene had made sure that she would be fit for a princess, even one was wild as Athanasia. The stallion, however, was rowdy and unruly, begging the prince to be the one who broke him. She couldn’t help but feel like that had been written for her, a challenge for the prince to conquer her. All her life she knew she was to be used for power, but she hadn’t expected to have to convey her own selling so openly. Still, both horses were certainly fine beasts and would do well in the Colchis stables as property of the Kotas family. The mare would produce many more fine beasts, as she was perfect for breeding, should the family wish to mix the lines. The unbroken horse alone meant that Fotios was clueless as to the prince’s injuries, and would have to stay wild a bit longer
Gods, she felt like she was the mare, just waiting to be bedded. It made her a little sick to think of.
For now, she had to remind herself, Selene had yet to present the mare to the Princess. Now, holding the reins in the courtyard, she was far more antsy than the horse next to her. She hoped that the princess would like the gift, and would make good use of it. Because she really was a fine horse, in need of a solid rider to keep her well-exercised. When she caught sight of the princess, she straightened and beamed, giving the princess a proper bow before focusing on the horse. “Princess Athanasia, thank you for meeting me.”

Athanasia had recieved a message from the visiting Lady Selene that morning, asking if she would meet her in the courtyard that afternoon which was all fine with Asia. Even with all the chaos from the storm, it would seem her mother still demanded that Asia kept up with her lessons even as Asia guessed it was to keep her from hitting her dummy older brother even more than she did. Even if it was only a short meeting, Athanasia was going to be prepared to not go back to the castle until nightfall, so as usual she wore her much shorter outfit that looked much like her brothers would wear on any given day. Asia's only consession was when she pulled her long hair back and tied it with a leather thong, it was warm out and her hair was starting to annoy her as she pondered what would happen if she cut her hair off so it didnt brush her lower back. Her mother would probably kill her if she did that.
Walking down around the way, her letter in hand incase anyone tried to stop her, she saw the Lady Selene in the distance just before she saw her and smiled. "Hello to you aswell Lady Selene. It was no problem, you saved me from more lessons." Mimicking her bow though it wasn't quite as low, Asia looked over at the horses near by. "Beautiful creatures. Are they yours?" She couldn't help but step closer, holding up both her hands to the horses, touching lightly on their soft muzzles. The stallion moved away quickly, making her laugh as it showed off and moved around almost wildly, the mare stayed though seemingly liking the attention from Athanasia. "Well, you are sweet, aren't you." Oh how she wished she had something to give them, as she ran her hand up the mare's nose till she played with the bangs of her mane.
For a moment she was distracted, eyes on the horse until she remembered she wasn't alone and turned to face Selene, "Apologies. What did you want to meet me out here for? Are you having fun here in Colchis?" Her mother's hounding of manners seemed to show that they stuck as Asia asked if everything was ok. Seemed some lessons have stuck after all.

Selene had never met a woman quite like the young princess. She reminded her a bit of Theo, but less refined. Not that she found it to be an undesirable trait. Perhaps, if she had been the youngest among brothers like the Kotas's, she would have been just a rambunctious and free. That was what true safety and security must have felt like. She was raised sure of herself, but still in doubt of her own worth. Marriage, a husband with a title-- that had always been the most important thing to her. And even with that now shifted a bit, she was still a little jealous of the princess's freedom.
Her eyes were bright as she spoke, "I do like to be useful, so if you need another excuse during my stay, please call upon me. I am ever the faithful noble." She gave a mock bow, coming to her full height as the princess got closer. She could tell that the princess had liked the mare and that the mare liked her confidence as well. "Actually, this one is yours." She said, tugging gently the leather reins of the white mare. Her free hand dipped into the small saddle bag, handing the princess an apple to give to the steed. "My uncle has hand-picked her from our family's stable to send to your family as a thank you for taking me in." Her now empty hand gently pet the long snot of the beast.
"I've never seen you ride, so I cannot say for sure if she will be of use to you, but she is an obedient horse. Calm, follows directions and loves attention. She would be a good horse to whoever rides her." Selene gently handed her the reins. "I rode her all day yesterday to make sure that she was fit for a princess, and I believe that she will be the most loyal of horses to you. She's got a bit of sass, I must warn, but nothing a firm rider cannot overcome." She was beaming, motioning to the horse being held by Titos. "That brute is a gift for your brother Prince Vangelis. I hope that he will be able to find some joy in breaking him in, once he is better." She stood back, watching carefully to see how she liked the small gift. "I do hope you will enjoy her, as a token of our thanks."

"I do hope you will enjoy her, as a token of our thanks."
As she watched Selene do a sort of mock bow, Asia couldn't help but grin at the sight. Her mother would have loved it if Asia was more like Selene, refined and poised, more like how she thought a princess should be. "I just might take you up on that offer. Especially on days like this one, when the weather is perfect, my brothers and I like to go hunting and running through the woods. Maybe you could join us, plus with you here, I can avoid those boring lessons mother is always trying to get me to do." She laughed a little as she spoke, though it didn't last for very long as she became distracted.
When Athanasia noticed the horses, mesmerized like she was as she placed her hands upon their noses, Selene's words caught her off guard. "For me? How do you know if I can even ride or not?" Taking the offered apple, Asia took out her dagger and cut it in half, offering one side to the mare as she held out the offering to the stallion as well. "She is beautiful, that is for sure. Might even make Zanon jealous that my horse is prettier than his is." Laughing as the mare's hair on her lips tickled Asia's palm and the thought of Zanon grouching, as she listened to Selene. "I like sass, makes me think of how my family thinks of me sometimes." Looking over at the stallion, Athanasia couldn't stop the frown as she thought of her brother, nodding a little at the comment about him getting better. "Yes, once he gets better. He will get better." Even if she had to call on Hades to make him get better.
As Selene talked, Asia listened, finding that she actually liked hanging out with the other woman and didn't want to ditch her and go for a run alone like she thought she might that morning. "I thank you for the gift, but I may ask a favor?" Now Asia looked almost embarrassed as she bit her lower lip in thought, feeling like an idiot in asking and actually mad at herself for skipping out on all her lessons. Seems like she missed quite a few fun ones, "Would you teach me how to ride? I never learned anything passed a walk. I mean, you don't have too but, I don't know how other than an easy walk.." With that, she turned and focused completely on the mare, trying to hide her irritation at herself.

The lady knew that she was being a little overly formal, but the motion was meant in a bit of teasing. While she had the utmost respect for the princess, she knew that bow at that point was a bit of overkill. Her smile made Selene smile, too, because the intent had been to do just that. "Please do. And, once I am home to Taengea, I would be more than happy to reply back, if nothing else for a distraction from your lessons. It could be considered a very important lesson in the art of correspondence." Her nose wrinkled a bit at the idea of hunting. "I have never been hunting before, so I am not all the sure my presence would be welcome. I might just scare away the potential game." The last thing she wanted to be was more of a bother than she already was.
It had been difficult for her to impose on their hospitality. They were having to provide her with amenities that they normally wouldn't have to consider. And they were making a point to keep her entertained. She had felt that she was easily becoming a burden, and that wasn't her intention. But, as luck seemed to have it, she was given the chance to assist them in giving back. And that had made her stay more bearable in her mind.
Selene simply nodded. "Yes, for you. And if you do not know how to ride, she is the perfect animal to learn on." The woman had yet to find a horse she couldn't ride herself. It was the one thing her father had always made time to do with her. And when she could, she spent time in the paddocks with the horses, watching men break the beasts. A part of her longed to do just that, to sit atop a stallion for the first time and break him herself. But her father would never let her. "Make sure he knows it, too." She said fondly, glad to have given the sister a one up.
"I do not doubt that your brother will get better. He's a fighter, and he's already healing well." Vangelis was already proving to be one of the strongest men she knew. His wounds would have been fatal for anyone else, but he had lived defiantly. And she was pleased by that. "But you must keep the gift a secret, for I want to be able to show him myself once he can be brought outside." She hoped to gain the sister's promise, to keep it quiet until just before she left, where she was sure that he would at least be able to go to onto the balcony to see the brute.
She was a little taken back the princess asking for a favor. "Of course you may." She listened to her request, beaming at bit. "I would be most honored to teach you, Princess. I do not know how long we will have, but I would happily teach you to cantor. So long as you don't mind a few bruises, I would imagine we could at least start a good foundation to the art." She was bouncing on her toes, excited. "Here, let's take her for a walk. That's a good place to start." Handing her the reins, she was smiling. "She can get used to you that way. And perhaps, you may tell me a little about your own lessons? I'm most interested to hear how ours have differed."

Selene's comments about writing back and becoming pen pals when she went home actually had Athanasia smile at the thought of having another friend. So far, though the woman seemed like she could be fun to be around though if the sass was anything to go by. Maybe they could go annoy her brothers later, just because. One of the fun things Asia loved to do was drive them nuts with all the trouble she could find herself in. “Hunting is fun, I am sure you will catch on quick. If you do scare any of the game, we will make sure you go around to the other side so you could scare the animals towards me.” At that thought, Asia laughed while picturing just how much easier that would make the game, betting at least Vangelis would crack a rare smile at that thought as well.
Turning back towards the mare, Asia couldn't help but reach out and touch her nose. It had been so long since she last rode on one and lately she found herself wanting to go faster than a mere walk, even though her family never allowed her too. Overprotective as usual, which is why she loved breaking the rules as often as she could. When Selene tells her that the mare was for her, it shocked Asia even as it pleased her to no end even as she tried not to look too surprised. The other woman's answer made her smile, betting that no one would complain too much about her having the mellow animal. The stallion scared Asia even if she would never admit it, forcing her to remember the one time she was thrown from a horse when she was much younger, thinking she could make the newly broken horse to listen to her when she dug in her heels to make the creature run. The fall had broken her arm, much to her family's irritation and worry. Her father had punished her, the only time he really had, since he admonished that she could have died when she was thrown. “I will make sure to point that out every time I go riding. Maybe I could make Zanon grouch as much as Vangelis does?” Now Asia laughed outright and loud at the thought, a huge grin on her face as she thought of Zanon's face, all her fears now vanished. “I will be sure to keep it a secret, I am sure he will love it. How ornery the stallion it is, it will fit his moods that he has had lately. Get his mind on healing even more swiftly.”
Looking over at the mare again, feeding her the other half of the apple, Asia worked up her courage to ask the Lady Selene for a favor. It was something that she almost lost her nerve to ask, but in a blurt, she did. It was the woman's smile the reassured her, how calm she seemed even with the comment of bruises, which was something Asia was all too familiar with so had no issues. “I don't mind bruises, I get them more often than anyone likes.” Taking the reins, she followed Selene's enthusiastic mood with a smile as she started to walk with her, looking almost sheepish as she asks about her own lessons. “Well, actually... I avoid them as much as possible. As for horse riding, there was an accident, and now I am not technically allowed to go faster than a walk. Even though it's much more fun to just run. I am guessing your family makes you do lessons as well?” It was a statement that ended like a question at the last moment, not sure if her new friend actually had to take any lessons she didn't want too.

While Selene may have been quiet and delicate, there was no indication she would have been good at hunting. Hunting on horseback was a completely different kettle of fish from riding. Horses needed to be trained to do so, because they often scared away the game. She was not good with a bow, either. Theo has tried to teach her once, but as soon as the bowstring slapped the soft inner skin of her arm, she was turned off by the activity. And her mother would scoff at the idea of her hunting, for it wasn’t something a future queen should do. No husband would want her to be hunting with him, as it wasn’t the activity of a proper wife. Still, she would not insult the princess by refusing her the idea. “I cannot imagine that I would be much help on a hunt, but if I was ever fortunate enough to be inviting, I would be delighted to go.” Once. Then she could say she had done it and politely refuse in the future.
But perhaps, if it would make Vangelis happy, she might have done it again.
Selene watched the girl’s face, trying to read her emotions. Having dealt with horses her whole life, she could usually tell that when a person was nervous around them. The Princess was familiar around horses, but there was something about it that made her nervous. The animals were intuitive, and they were able to read their emotions. If there was a moment of doubt or fear, they would pick up on it. At least her confidence outweighs any hesitation she was showing. Perhaps it would be best if she didn’t meet the untamed horse. “He’s not used to being incapacitated, and from what I can tell, he doesn’t do well with it. It will give him something to look forward to.” At least, she hoped it would.
What if he didn’t like it? What if he read what his uncle had meant?
Trying not to think about it, Selene allowed the girl to take the lead. The injury didn’t surprise her, since most riding fears seemed to come from a bad outcome. “But you still ride?” She asked gently, hoping that she wasn’t going to have to start from scratch. It would be a few days before she left, and that didn’t leave much time for lessons.
At the mention of her own, she shrugged. “Not so much anymore. My time is more focused on arranging my families parties. I also spend a bit of time with my horses. I’m proficient at the harp as well, but I don’t get many lessons any more.” They walked together, happy to see that the horse seemed to prefer Athanasia instead of her. It was good. Perhaps the lessons wouldn’t take long after all.

Asia wasn't sure on how she was going to do with the lessons, the fear climbing into her as if it were a living thing as thoughts of being thrown filled her mind. The remembrance of how it felt as she landed on the hard ground with a dull thud as the horse screamed. To Asia, she remembered it all, though the horse's scream in defiance or fear sounded far off compared to the sound, not unlike the sound of a twig snapping as her arm broke. Rubbing her forearm lightly, Athanasia could still remember the burning throb that filled her mind from her arm as she practically begged her father to somehow just remove it and stop the pain. It was that memory that had her lifting her chin in her own show of defiance, her brother Vangelis had just broken half his body practically and almost died, but he didn't cry.
As she and Selene stood there, a pause in their conversation as Asia faced the mare as she said in a low voice that almost came across as if she said it to herself, "Don't you dare throw me, I mean it." It was a quick motion, swinging her legs up and over to find herself on the horse and ready for Selene to teach her how to gallop even as the mare moved around a little to get better situated, maybe even run if they had the time. "You are lucky in that you don't get many lessons anymore. Father and mother still trying to get me to do several, mother is especially pushy on the 'princess lessons', and wanting me to be more ladylike." At that comment, Asia made a bland expression to show just what she thought of that. "So, now what should I do?"
