With Vangelis and Athanasia now gone for almost half a month, Evras had begun to settle into the routine of Zanon being indefinitely busy as he stepped into the role of his eldest brother's position in his absence. She did not question, and merely ensured she was around to welcome him home each time he returned from visiting a separate province, or whenever he had a late night handling all of the advisor's queries or paperwork that came in. Instead, Evras found herself ensuring she was always on hand in assisting the Queen's daily duties, as well as stepping in each evening to check in on her son and how his daily training was, with each passing day.
Having almost been a month and a half ever since their explosive argument in the Kotas residence foyer, Queen Yanni's attitude to her seemed to be defrosting somewhat, as she had now laxed the duties to allow Evras to oversee the management of the household.
And to a certain extent, the Thanasi-born lady was glad. In a way, it meant that the matriarch was now willing to at least trust Evras, and with Dion aging to be almost an adult now, she now had less duties as a mother, and more duties as the princess she had never really learned to be. The moment she had married Zanon, she had already been pregnant with Dion, and the years that followed was busy with ensuring that her son got the care he needed. Evras had never agreed to fobbing off the care of her offspring to nursemaids, and as such took an active role in his upbringing in a way nobles rarely did.
Now that Dion was of an age where he no longer needed her care however, Evras found herself engaging in other activities. She had upped her visits to the temples (although after the fires, she now had to ensure she had four guards with her anytime she went out, a habit Evras found hard to get used to), and went almost daily whenever she could. But what frustrated Evras the most, was her inability to step up now that she wanted to. Ever since a month ago, she had found herself constantly needed to sleep, and while she had chalked that up to stress and the increasing amounts of time Zanon had kept her up at night now that they had returned to sharing a bed, as the month's halfway point waved at her, she had her own suspicions.
Not that she wanted to read too much into it.
Many have thought it odd that after almost twelve years of marriage, Evras and Zanon only, and still only had one son. But it wasn't for lack of trying. For the first few years, the husband and wife had agreed on Evras regularly taking the tea provided by the midwife to prevent herself from having more children, if only to ensure Dion could get the attention he needed. But the years after proved to be disappointments to both, miscarriages in between Zanon being away for war campaigns, and each time found Evras curled up by herself in bed, wondering if something was wrong with herself, and if she could ever have another child. Perhaps it was another facet to why she clung on to Dion with such hope, especially after her husband had decided to do away from her. She... had yet to take any sort of tea from midwives ever since she started sharing a bed with Zanon yet.
But hope was a dangerous thing.
As her maid's helped her out from the bath she had been taking after the evening meal, Evras carefully dried herself with the sheet they handed her, and surreptiously placed a hand on her belly. She had yet to have bled, and if she counted properly... it had almost been two months. But would she be a fool to hope? Evras has had points in her life where stress simply caused a delay, and she didn't want to put false hope. And at the same time... would Zanon even welcome the thought of another child? They were working on their communication and marriage yet.

Every part of him seemed to ache and he still had an armful of papers that needed his attention. He normally didn't mind so much when Vangelis went off on any of his various journeys, and especially since his elder brother was set to see the beautiful Taengean who he should just go ahead and marry already, he was trying not to begrudge him this adventure. It was different this time, however, because after the collapse of the mines so much now needed repair that he was neglecting sleep and food, and time with his wife and son. Dion he felt confident enough to leave in the company of his younger brothers for trainings and other scholars for lessons, but there was a niggling guilt in the pit of his stomach over Evras.
For the previous three years, he couldn't have cared less how she might be occupying her time and wouldn't have given a second thought to going to her bed. But ever since their fiery argument and their continuing recovery of the relationship that had gone to so many pieces he had been trying. That wasn't to say he hadn't looked at or touched another, but he was truly trying to recover what they had lost. Turning away temptation had never been easy for him, and he wasn't about to stop now, but he was keeping a low profile when he visited others and trying to deny himself whenever he had the strength to. Of course, his brother leaving had kept him busy enough it was all he could do to manage to make it to his bed for sleep much less anything else.
Groaning as he entered their bedchamber, Zanon set the documents on a table before turning and walking zombie like to the bed, falling face first against the soft blankets. It had hardly registered at first that his wife was wrapped only in a towel after her bath with the maids about her, but after a moment of silence with his face pressed to the bed the picture finally clicked into place and he slowly turned so he could take in the sight of her. She was still so stunningly beautiful even after so many years. It was no wonder there was an aura of magic about her with the way her pale skin glowed against her jet black hair. And those eyes...as if formed of ice they seemed so translucent.
As exhausted as he was, something stirred within him and he slowly sat up, beckoning to Evras as his words shooed away all of her attendants. "Come, let me help instead."

The entrance of her husband to their shared chamber had caused Evras to look up as her servants wiped her down, especially drying her hair. Her eyes had automatically swivelled upwards as he entered, and her brows knitted together when he groaned, and soon collapsed face first into their bed, an action that obviously meant he was beyond tired.
Her heart went out to her husband, for she knew how hard he had been working. Late nights spent in the mansion's study, and trips out of the province occasionally, Evras never suspected anything beyond her husband handling all the affairs Vangelis had left him when the elder prince left for Taengea with Athanasia. Knowing Zanon, he had always been a stellar right hand man when it came to assisting his brother, of that Evras had no doubt.
So when he had dove face first in, she had instinctively move towards him, only to be held back by the sheets her servants were still using to wipe her down. Her dark hair was now only damp instead of dripping wet, and she would eventually dry it by the fire. The residual heat of the noon was already starting to dry it however, as was the breeze drifting in from the open window of their chambers.
As Zanon turned to meet his eyes on her bare body, Evras's translucent blue-green eyes flashed with a slight tinge of embarassment as she felt his gaze roam her body. One would think she was used to it by now... yet the many questions roaming in her head, from her late bleed to the different way in which they led their lives now, ever since their large argument, had made her much more self conscious then she was. Evras was fully aware that her body was no longer as lithe and slim as before giving birth to Dion... but surely he had not minded?
The servants were quick to abide by his ruling - one did not just go against the orders of the second prince. But it wasn't as if Evras resisted, even as they left in a gaggle and locked the door behind them. Instead, the dark haired maiden gave a soft smile, and headed over to where her husband sat by the bed. Stepping in between his legs, she gave him the sheet, before running a hand through his longer hair, and down to cup his cheek. "You look exhausted, love. Have you slept at all?" she murmured, concern evident in her tone.

The quick pace the servants left them to their own devices pleased him, he much preferred handling his wife in private and seeing her this way was a delight he hadn't realized he wanted. Taking the sheet from her, he ran it first over her opposite arm that hadn't reached for him and down her back, catching the loose ends of her raven hair and wrapping his arms around her to towel the strands dry. He closed his eyes for a moment as she touched his cheek, turning to press a kiss to her palm before resuming the movement of the sheet over her bare body.
It didn't bother him in the slightest, the way her figure had changed and softened over the years since the birth of their son. She was still the same beauty and the things that had first caught his attention remained unchanged. Her skin still so impossibly soft and white, her eyes as bright as ever, and her hair somehow without even the slightest streak of grey as they aged. He'd begun to find silver strands in his own a few months back after Vangelis first went to Taengea, but aside from an additional softness she looked the same as ever she had so many years ago.
His hands with the sheet to dry her came around to her breasts, and as he sat forward to lean his forehead between them he wondered if it was just his mind playing tricks that made them feel fuller than usual. Nestled against her all attempts at drying her off were abandoned and he wrapped his arms around her waist to keep her close instead. He couldn't honestly remember the last time he'd slept, not since he rode back from Almosis, was that last night or the one before? There was so much to do and while usually he split these sorts of things with Vangelis and his younger brothers, he couldn't bring himself to delegate anything away.
"No. There's so much to do. I've pushed everything back an hour but I'm sure someone will come banging down our door in crisis any moment now."
Zanon's voice was muffled against her chest as he tried to keep himself from falling asleep then and there. A quick nap couldn't hurt, but then again he had no way to guarantee it would be quick and not turn into several hours of sleep he couldn't afford to give away.

His touch was far more personal then the impersonal brush of servants tending to the care of her body, but it was the kind Evras preferred so much more. Even through the rough cloth, she could feel a light frisson of electricity on her skin as he kissed her palm and resumed drying her body. In turn, Evras stayed still under his ministrations, merely taking the time to look at the dark circles under his eyes, the haggard look he wore no doubt from many late nights or lack of sleep.
A soft laugh escaped her as her husband leaned forward to lean his forehead between her breasts, another part of her body that made her wonder. They were sore at certain times, and while they often became sore when she neared the time of her monthly flow, there was no doubt that they would also be sore if she was with child. What frustrated Evras the most was that she could not tell until more time had passed, and the hope that burgeoned in her heart was getting more and more difficult to resist. To be certain would take another month yet before a physician can tell, and it had been too long since her last pregnancy for Evras to remember clearly how the changes had been like when she carried Dion, and how they differed from her body simply preparing for its usual monthly.
Sighing when Zanon confirmed her suspicions, she combed her fingers through his hair as he spoke against her chest, his warm breathe tickling her bare skin. Lightly massaging his scalp, she took a step closer to wrap arms around his shoulders, kneading the muscles gently. "Then you better get some sleep now, should you not?" she replied. Leaning back slightly so she could reach the front of his shoulders, she pushed him back so he could lie down on the bed. Grabbing the sheets from his hands, Evras dropped the damp material near the tub she had bathed in, and then loosely tied a sea green material around her bare body.
Heading for the bed where Zanon was on, the woman nudged him to lay properly, before she flicked the sheets over their bodies. Propping herself on her side, her dark hair flowed down like a black curtain as she traced a finger across his cheeks, before hesitantly asking, "Would you... mind another child, other then Dion, husband?" It was obvious in the way she averted her eyes that Evras was entirely unsure of how her husband would react, especially with the way he seemed to assume she had kept lovers over the past three years, a fact that she had not. Husband and wife had shared the bed enough times over the past month to have had something stir within her belly afterall.

"I suppose...I can allow others to handle anything that might arise."
He ought to do more of that to begin with, but Yiannis and Silas both had lives and duties of their own to attend to, and it had always been put on him to deal with this sort of thing. When Vangelis went off on his many journeys Zanon was the one who took on his burden, and it gave him a great deal of appreciation and respect for what his older brother managed. Though if Vang took one more voyage to Taengea without bringing Selene of Leventi back with him as his wife, the second prince wasn't sure if he'd be able to resist strangling the older man. He'd only seen the two of them together for a short time during his brother's injury, but if there was anyone more suited to being the next queen of Colchis, he'd step off the closest cliff he could find.
Allowing his wife to shove him back, he gave a groan and closed his eyes, kicking the sandals from his feet and stretching ankles and toes that felt as if they hadn't been able to do anything but get him from one meeting to the next. His back was not accustomed to so much time sitting, nor his hand for writing so many letters and signing so many requests. His mother had been something of a lifesaver, it had been her who finally shooed him back toward his room, saying she would fend off the beasts until he'd had a proper meal at the least. And while food sounded tempting, the softness of his bed was far more appealing right now.
Zanon rolled as Evras directed, shifting to slip an arm around her waist and nestle his head against her chest again as she laid beside him and covered them both with the sheet. For a moment he was convinced he was dreaming when she posed her question and it took him a moment to blink one eye open, looking up at her as he processed what it was she was saying. Of course he wouldn't mind another child, but with nearly twelve years between the first living son and now he had always thought that it wouldn't be the case. The gods had given them Dion, who was a perfect balance between his parents. What more could he ask for than to be blessed with such a son?
It was the expression on his wife's face that caused him to open his other eye and blink up at her slowly, his brow furrowing as he thought it over. The miscarriages had been difficult, and then of course there had been the years of distance between them. They'd certainly shared a bed enough for it to be a possibility, but he hated the idea of her having to go through another loss like that, worried what that might do to them and their family.
"I am happy with what we have. I wouldn't mind, but it isn't something we've been granted."

"I am happy with what we have. I wouldn't mind, but it isn't something we've been granted."
From the way Zanon reacted, it was obvious that he was tired, and Evras was not surprised. He nestled up to her body like a tired animal would muzzle its companion, and the dark-haired maiden gladly melted in his embrace, one that she had taken for granted far too many times for her to ignore now. With gentle hands, the fingers found his shoulder blades, and she kneaded them gently as he nestled against her chest.
His reaction was.... Evras did not know what to make of it. It wasn't as if they had not tried, but apparently her body had taken much stress through giving birth to Dion, and had refused to allow any other child to take root. Evras had not reacted well with each miscarriage, and despite the physician saying her body will heal in time, a part of her mind screamed at her that it was her fault she lost two potential children, that the Gods decided to punish her by taking her husband away from her.
The question now, was that since she had her husband back, did it mean she was also now capable of carrying another child? She was afraid to ponder on the fact. But fact of the matter was she had missed her courses over the last month, and was now supposed to have a current course, which isn't making an appearance at all.
Zanon's slow blinking made her worry her bottom lip with her teeth, anxious for reasons she could not fathom. "I'm happy too." she hurriedly responded, fearful that he would actually think she was dissatisfied for whatever reason. She was not, at all. Having her husband back without him tossing shaded comments in her direction, or avoiding her entirely, was a blessing she still thanked Hera and Aphrodite for. Yet the question had been eating away at her since the end of the last month. One month, she could blame on stress and of recent turmoil in their kingdom. But now as they neared the end of the second month?
Laying her head back down on the pillow, the woman pasted a smile on her face, and reached up to cup her husband's face, shaking her head. "I'm... sure it's nothing, husband." she murmured in her soft tone, her thumb slowly caressing his cheek as if trying to lull him back to sleep. "I..." she started, paused again. Would it be fair if she didn't tell him? He was her husband, and of anyone in the world, he deserved to know more then anything else.
As if steeling herself, Evras cleared her throat, squaring her jaw. The only thing she couldn't do was bring herself to look at Zanon in the eye... because what would he think? "I... I may be with child. Again." Her voice had dropped to a whisper at the last syllable, and it was as if her heart paused as she waited for Zanon's answer.

Evras’ assurance that she was happy with what they had comforted him and Zanon lay his head back down in contentment. His eyes closed once again as his wife’s fingers traced along his cheek and he was very nearly lulled back to sleep before she spoke again. For someone who had pushed him down to rest she was certainly making it difficult for him to get any.
This time his eyes stayed closed as she assured him whatever it was was nothing, but then if it was nothing why was she telling him?
It took a moment for him to process what she said. Slowly opening dark eyes, he peered back into her pale ones as if searching for any hint of a joke or tease. It would be cruel to tell him this if it was not so, and she was the furthest from cruel.
Shifting to push himself up on his elbow, Zanon was now entirely awake as he looked at her, lips parted in uncertainty. After eleven years of nothing, were they getting their hopes up unnecessarily again? Or would this time they be truly blessed with a second child? His hand fell to her stomach, still without any noticeable rise.
”Are you certain? When could we know?”

She didn't know if she had done the right thing. Did she? If this one proved to not old again, she had merely sentenced both her husband and herself and set them up for yet another disappointment. His silence after her hushed admission merely made her blood run cold - was he unhappy? The woman worried her bottom lip as her husband peered into her eyes, uncertainty clear in their glassy depths.
Following him to a seated up position as he pushed himself up, a small sense of regret crept into her heart. Had she not asked him to rest? It wasn't as if he would have much chances to rest after this. She really should have picked a better time, yet the news seem to spill out her lips earlier, and there was naught she could do to retract spoken words.
Gulping at his two, very weighted questions, Evras hesitated for a moment, before answering. "I can't say for certain. Perhaps by next month, I could ask a physician." His touch on her stomach, flat as it was now, still sent a flutter through her. She could remember back when she carried Dion, how Zanon would brush her swollen belly as she grew, looking at her with a seeming sense of pride. Would it be the same, if they were truly blessed this time?
Reaching up, she placed her own hand over Zanon, heart a little weighted. "I hope I didn't disappoint you, husband. I... Not this time, at least." She was the wife of a prince - carrying a child was one of the important duties she had as his spouse, yet the lost of two before had already shaken her enough, she was fearful of doing the same this time.

Next month, they could know for sure. His heart leapt at the thought of another child running about the halls, another little face beaming up at them. Dion was very nearly a man already and to have another baby would be a chance for him to start again, be a proper father the whole way through. If he had his way there would be a full collection of Kotas children about the place, but it had never been an option for them and after every subsequent miscarriage his hopes had faded. If he only had one son, one child, Dion was the best he could ask for, but if there could be more..
Zanon smiled and lifted his other hand to caress Evras' cheek. The look of anxiety on his wife's face was something he wanted to brush away, bring back her smiles and confidence again. She was so gentle, so kind, and in the past he'd mistaken it for a weakness, been afraid of what her serene expressions might mean. His fear had faded, and now affection had returned stronger than ever. Next month, the words flitted through his mind again and his grin widened.
"All will be well with this one."
Bending to press his lips to her stomach as he had when she had carried the others in the past, he sat back up and brought her lips to his in a sweet kiss. He had been far too busy since his brother left, unable to give her and their son the attention they deserved and he regretted that. Vangelis always made the role of crown prince and the duties that came with it seem so easy, so simple, but living the life with those duties on top of the ones he typically held felt impossible.
"Don't fret, we will make you comfortable and be sure that there is nothing to take this one away from us."
He was determined to make sure that this time all went well. She should be the one resting, and he suddenly felt he ought to be doing things for her to make sure that it was all taken care of. Someone to ensure she had everything she needed, to make sure her feet didn't swell as uncomfortably as they had with Dion's pregnancy, to make her as happy and at ease as possible.

Zanon smiled and lifted his other hand to caress Evras' cheek. The look of anxiety on his wife's face was something he wanted to brush away, bring back her smiles and confidence again.
