By the time Selene and Vangelis returned from their journey, it was late into the evening. The sky was no longer painted in its hues of pinks and yellows, dark as chariot was pulled across the sky with the moon. The ride home, like the ride there, was quiet as they moved down the mountain. But once they hit the open land, where they had run their horses, they instead walked them side by side. And while they didn't say much beyond quiet observations, it was a pleasant journey. She enjoyed the unrushed pace they took, neither party in a hurry to return. As soon as they breached the gates back to the manor, dawdling was not an easy option. He had always had a duty, and would balance that with his desire to stay with her or do what he must.
As they walked the two horses back into the stable, they shared their plans for the next few days. And while he had far more on his plate than she did, Selene was eager for any chance to take up her role as fiancé. It was easy to agree to join him at a family dinner, where her presence would be a statement in and of itself. And it was easier for her to insist on being able to care for herself so that he could go about his evening as needed. She pressed a kiss to his cheek, unable to deny the ease of showing affection when they were alone. As soon as the stable grooms joined them, they were back to formality, and she couldn't help giggle softly at the bow he gave her as they parted ways.
As soon as he was gone, Selene stayed the hand of groom, stopping him from unsaddling the mare. The blonde waited a few moments, then remounted the horse. The Leventi manor was not far from that of the Kotas grounds, and there was a giddiness in her need to share the news. There was a hesitation to tell Pia just yet, not sure how it would be received with her own condition after birth, combined with the news of the death of Irakles. Telling his family was his own responsibility, so she could not seek out Evras or Athanasia. Some would argue that she could have waited till morning, but there was only one person who wished for her engagement more than she did.
She wanted to break the news to her mother immediately.
As she attempted to leave the grounds, she was stopped by the guards. No amount of convincing could stop one from mounting a horse beside her, even without his knowledge of her soon to be status of betrothed. Selene was sure that Vangelis had given orders to make sure all guests were protected at all times, so there would be no arguing her desire to leave alone.
The ride to the manor felt awkward, but perhaps this was the first true realization of what being Queen would mean. She would have guards, and would most likely have to get used to the idea of alone time being limited to when she was within the manor alone. Perhaps it would not feel so bad, as she had seen how Alastair had become a quiet and reassuring shade behind Pia.
As soon as the manor came into sight, she picked up the pace, forgetting about her own thoughts as they entered the grounds. Dismounting, she asked the man to stay, that she would not be inside long. When he didn't turn to leave, Selene quickly hitched the mare and pressed into the house. The last time she had stayed here, it had been brief. Only a few hours before she was swept up into the Kotas family, as a matter of fact. Still, she knew it well enough to know which room her mother would have taken. While the hour was not overly late, she was sure that her mother would still be preparing for bed. Padding through the house, Selene gently knocked on the door of the master suite. But she didn't wait for an answer as she pushed it open, sticking her head into the doorway. ”Mama?” Her voice was quiet, in case she was sleeping.

It has been a long two weeks, after the welcoming feast that resulted in the revival of a Colchian King everyone had assumed to be dead, at least that was what Evelli knew. And the days had been a whirlwind, mostly of the matriarch attempting and doing her best to be by the side of her daughter-turned-new mother, along with her granddaughter. A part of Evelli, while she understood the frustration of both Olympia and Stephanos, did not understand why they could bear to not love Tisiphone.
Of course, Evelli understood Olympia's especially. She had been through the dissapointment of five daughter's afterall. But she wouldn't dream of ever showing a temper to them as what has been told to her of Selene. Whether or not they were girl's or boy's, they were her daughter's, and at the end of the day, Evelli would take a knife for them. Perhaps it helped that regardless of their gender, Georgios was completely in love with whatever child Evelli produced, so even if Evelli had spent the first two days of each birth in a gloom, their father had always been around to provide them the warmth and affection Evelli needed time to cultivate for them.
But it was due to the actions told of her, that Evelli worried. In due time, she hoped Stephanos would see the beauty of having a girl, for if not, Evelli would have very firm words for him.
The events of the past two weeks had tired her out, perhaps more then Evelli might admit though. Maybe it was her age catching up to her, or maybe it was just because she was in a foreign kingdom after a long voyage, but she was finding herself feeling exhausted and falling asleep earlier in the evening, sometimes even missing a meal she didn't feel hungry to have in order to gain more sleep.
That evening had been one of those nights, her evening meal growing cold on a table in her room, as Evelli had fallen asleep before the sun had even properly set. In her night shift and messed up bedsheets, her hair was plaited, and her windows were opened to relieve the stuffiness of the room as she slept. A chamber that felt far too large without the presence of her husband, Evelli had only groaned and shifted when the knock sounded.
It wasn't till the door scraped the ground, that she sat up straight in bed, alert for danger. Relaxing only when she saw the golden head of her eldest, Evelli's features showed surprise as she pulled the covers off and got to her feet, curious. "What are you doing here at this hour, Selene? I thought Pia needed you to help with Tisiphone." Evelli would have offered to watch her granddaughter at night of course, but with her recovery of the recent bout of illness, and how sick she had been on the ship, Georgios had expressly reminded her to take care, and she didn't need her husband finding the necessity to sail across oceans to ensure she slept, so she had opted not to.
Crossing the room, Evelli quickly ran a hand and eyes across Selene's form to ensure nothing untoward had happened to her daughter, before levelling a curious, furrowed gaze on her as she waited for an answer.

The hour didn’t seem so late that her mother would already be in bed. After all, if that had been the case, it was most likely that Selene would have waited until the morning to share her good news. The exhaustion in her mother had not gone unnoticed, not by the watchful eye of her daughter. Like her father, the eldest often found it her duty to take care of those she cared for first before tending to her own needs. So the slight sag in her shoulders, and the bags under her eyes were all indications that the matron of the family needed rest.
And yet, Selene hoped that the news would be worth the few moments of lost sleep. Maybe she would be able to rest a little better knowing that the fate of her eldest daughter was well sealed in a suitable marriage.
She realized that she woke the woman with her appearance, and she was immediately apologetic, shoulder slightly curling towards her chest. ”I did not think you would be to bed yet, Mama. I am sorry to arrive unannounced.” It was as the woman was in front of her, hand up to her face that she leaned into the comforting greeting of her mother.
Evelli looked tired. Even after all the recovery time, it had not been enough for her to fully heal from the journey here. It was in that moment that she realized that once her mother left Colchis, it might be the last time she saw her. Would she be able to travel to see her once she was married? Or would Selene have to travel back to her homeland to be able to spend time with her mother? The very core of her stomach unraveled at the thought of never seeing the dark haired matron again.
”I am well, Mama. And Tisiphone was resting when I left.” Pia could look after her daughter for a few more moments. ”I have news to share with you, and I could not wait until morning to tell you.” Her face transformed, the excitement of her news covering her every feature. It was as if a candle had been lit, a flower blooming as she stood straighter, unable to hide just how truly joyful she was about what she had to share. ”Mama, Prince Vangelis has asked if he could write to father and uncle for permission to wed. And I have agreed.”
Her lip pulled back in between her teeth, trying to contain her excitement in case her mother didn’t approve of the match. Selene slipped her hands into her mother’s, pulling them closer to her chest. ”Is this not the most wondrous news?”

It was early yes, but Evelli had found herself seeking out the comfort of her bed far earlier lately. Perhaps it was the air in Colchis? She'd have to see if it remained the same whenever she returned to Taengea. Shaking a head when Selene apologized, she extended a hand and brought her eldest daughter in to the room. Evelli would never gripe at having to attend to any of her daughters, it would even come off as her having an abundance of patience when she had to deal with five hormonal girls. But in truth, Evelli only had patience for her brood, for her temper was short elsewhere, as Georgios would attest.
Her smile was warm even if it was weary whilst Selene told her of what was going on back in the Kotas manor. Evelli would've dearly loved to share a quarter with Tisiphone, as she had done back with each girl she had given birth to. Despite having the services of a wet nurse, Evelli had asked for her infant cots to be positioned in her room after the first month was over, so she would ensure their care was done well, and she had long missed that feeling. However, the fact that the Colchian royalty kept no palace and as such had limited guest rooms, meant Evelli ended up staying in the Leventi household here in Colchis instead, a distance away from the royal manor.
Raising a brow when it quickly transformed to news she had to share, interest flickered through her eyes which quickly turned to a pleased surprise when Selene finally informed her of what had just transpired. Was she surprised? Well, if she was entirely honest, Evelli couldn't say she was too surprised, considering her servant's back in Taengea has been telling her regarding the surprising amount of missives Selene has been receiving, not to mention her spending an inordinate amount of time in Colchis on top of everything Georgios has told her. Was she pleased? The man had a crown, and was a prince, and didn't seem all too bad, so in truth, Evelli didn't have much to consider.
Logically, she should be ecstatic cause a crown prince destined to be King being married to her daughter was all Evelli wanted for them, the kind of security she couldn't give to them from her failure to have a son. But at the end of it all, despite her wanting them to have amazing husbands, her maternal instincts warred with the other. Was he kind? Would he treat her eldest well? Would he make her happy? These were the questions that knitted her brow after her first instinct to grin and squeeze her daughter's hands tightly in between her grasp. "It is! Marriage has always been in your stars daughter, and I always knew the Gods have always had a good husband lined up for you. Tis the only reason why they had made you wait for so long." That Olympia and Theodora were both now married, Evelli knew it must be a pang on Selene to be the eldest but not married yet.
Her worries remained however, surfacing in her clear hazel eyes as she paused for a moment, and then asked. "Are you happy about it, Lene?"

As much as Selene had been focused on her own concerns since arriving in Colchis, that didn’t mean that she hadn’t noticed how her mother seemed to need far more time to recover from her travel. Had her mother always been like this? She tried to think back on the voyages from Serenn to Macendia, unable to remember such a long recovery period. But any frowning was kept to herself, knowing that her mother would not wish her to worry over her. Perhaps Selene would talk with Thea, to see if there was something she could offer to ease her mother’s pain.
Selene had thought her letters between herself and the crown prince to be mostly secret. Had her mother told her that she was aware of how often the two had been in communications, she would have been a bit ashamed of it. But it wouldn’t have been because she was ashamed of Vangelis, but more because she was certain that her mother might think her being inappropriate. Yes, Evelli wanted her children married and happy, but Selene was certain that she wanted it done with dignity and decorum. And perhaps she was also worried that her mother would think her attempting to hide the connection. In a way, she was. It was obvious to anyone who knew the Leventi name that it was the desire to find royal marriages for the daughters. If her mother knew, perhaps she was worried that she would try to intervene further. Selene had wanted the connection and attraction to grow on its own.
Once she realizes she was attracted to him, anyway.
With bated breath, Selene watched the emotions play on her mother’s face, unsure what to make of the questioning look of her pause. Her bottom lip tucked into her teeth, wondering if her mother wouldn’t approve of him. There had been certainty in her mind that his title would be enough for her to agree to the match (for Selene was no fool-- if her mother didn’t agree, her father would be swayed in Evelli’s favor). And yet, it seemed as if the matron wasn’t sure about her own feelings. How could she not approve? And yet, moments later, Evelli squeezed her hands in excitement, sharing in Selene’s joy. Relief washed over her shoulders as the breath she had been holding was released. ”There had been reason to doubt, with recent events.” Selene confessed, her cheeks pinking as she tried to wrestle with her own emotions. ”And yet, the Gods have smiled down on me in this.”
Her question caused Selene to pause, and she blinked for a moment. Then, Selene let out a bubble of laughter, giving her mother’s hands a squeeze back. ”Mama, you think that I would have rushed over here as late as I did if I was not happy?” Leaning in, she pressed a kiss to her mother’s cheek. ”I have hoped that he would do so since his visit to Serenn, but I was unsure that he would. He is a stoic man who is not open with his feelings to many. I know I should not tell you this,” she prefaced, hoping that she realized what she was going to say was important, ”but Mama, he saved Pia and Stephanos because I asked him to. He was hesitant to interfere, and yet he did so for me. If there were any doubt, any concern on your part that he does care for me, I would hope knowing that would put it to rest.”
She didn’t dare tell her that he’d abdicated the throne for those brief moments to do so. Selene was aware of what could happen with the knowledge, and it was kept within the quiet of her heart. But her mother needed to know that Vangelis cared for her, more deeply than she thought even he was aware of. ”I love him, Mama. So, yes, I am happy.”
It felt good to tell someone that, too.

She had been fussing ever since the surprise and sudden passing of the Taengean former crown prince. Everyone in Taengea had known, almost expected the marriage between Zacharias and Selene, and Evelli herself had vocally told Selene to ensure such a union happen. It was only natural, as the largest family in Taengea that their eldest offspring and one said to be blessed by Aphrodite, be a wife to the supposed King in Taengea. Except the Gods played a cruel game, and as her two younger sisters got married, Selene was left with no husband and lesser prospects.
But that she had found another, equally royal husband pleased Evelli, connection be damned. Attraction was not difficult to find. Evelli was blind as a mother in that she was certain none could compare to the beauty she knew Selene held, and of that she was certain. She really could care less regarding any sort of intimate connection, but what she did know, was that the man her daughter had chosen, would not harm her. It was less of a concern when they all had assumed her marriage and subsequently her wedded life would take place somewhere in Taengea. That her intended, and subsequently her home, would now be in a kingdom a week's travel away, meant Evelli had more things to be certain of now, especially when she knew Georgios would question her regarding their supposed son-in-law.
Raising a brow when her cheeks pinked, Evelli wisely decided not to chase that line of thought, and instead focused on the way in which her blonde offspring laughed. At the very least, she could be certain Selene wanted such a marriage - she had to hear it with her own ears. That he saved Pia and Stephanos earned him a mark in her books, but Evelli would have to write to her husband come morning, for Georgios would be far more well versed in the character of the royalty in other kingdoms then she was.
"He did?" she echoed, trying not to sound more surprised then she was. Evelli had wondered how it had come to pass, after receiving the cryptic missive from Selene. In that time, Evelli had not questioned much, but now that the danger has passed, the brunette was curious on how exactly things had transpired. She would save the conversation for a different date, and instead chose to listen to her words.
Love... was a funny thing. That Evelli shared a comfortable love with Georgios was a lucky thing, for theirs had only bloomed after the birth of the exact daughter she now spoke to. The marriage before that had simply been a tango of getting to know each other. So when Selene brought up love, Evelli went silent for a moment, before speaking in slow, measured tones. "That is... great to hear, Selene. However, do... be careful." Evelli hesitated, and then gently picked up her daughter's hand in hers. "From what I've seen of the crown prince, he is a man of responsibility and loyalty, and I do not think he makes decisions lightly. I am thankful love exists, but... make sure you have your priorities straight, and your expectations measured against having one as responsible and strait-laced as he to be your husband." She did not wish Selene to be disappointed months into the marriage, to find the relationship to be not as what she expected it to be.
Squeezing the hand she held gently, her smile turned brighter as she continued. "But that aside, I believe I should have a visit with the King and Queen of Colchis then, shall I not? I would like to call the dressmaker from Taengea over though. I believe they make far superior dresses, unless you wish to be wedded in a dress made of armor and chain links." the matriarch teased with a slight sparkle in her eye.

Selene had not told her mother of her arrangement with Zacharias for a reason. While everyone expected them to wed, there was no certainty in it. And she had approached him with an idea (even if he felt that it was blackmail), one that he was willing to see through. They had agreed to wait until after the festival, until he was victorious in the races, to make it official. And then, he was gone, without a body to even bury. There was no engagement to speak of, and she hadn’t been betrothed to him to even earn the right to mourn him differently.
The word of his part in the freeing of Stephanos and Pia should have been kept secret. And she hoped that it was enough that she didn’t say exactly how he interfered, only that he had. Her mother didn’t need to know that he gave up the throne to do so, and Selene refused to share that part of it. He would earn the trust of her family in his own time, but she knew that Pia would be pleased with it, as long as Selene was.
She wanted her mother to be happy about it. There was a need to make her mother proud, after years of being the disappointing daughter. There was a need to be enough for her, even though she was almost certain that she was. But with her fate set now, she hoped it was enough for her mother. After all, who didn’t want their daughter to be a Queen? She quietly listened to her mother’s advice, knowing that she meant well with her advice.
”I know, Mama. I do not mind his serious demeanor, not when he seems to let his guard down when it is just the two of us.” Selene gave her mother’s hand a squeeze. ”My priorities are to be the kind of wife and Queen you raised me to be. I shall try to break that hard exterior. I am sure it will be quite a learning process, but it is one that I want to make with him. Do you not approve of him?” She was concerned that maybe her mother didn’t think him a proper fit for her. Hadn’t the desire been to secure a royal match that would see her on the throne? Regardless of her attachment to the man, she had thought that her mother would be overjoyed at the prospect. But perhaps she had misjudged the desire over her mother’s concern for her happiness.
Which seemed strange. Perhaps the circus really had changed them all.
But as her mother’s smile seemed brighten, Selene relaxed a bit, glad that her mother seemed to be warming up to the idea of a Colchian marriage to Vangelis. It was all that she wanted now, so the fact that her mother seemed happy about it too made her all the happier. She wanted to make her family proud, and this seemed to be the perfect way to do it. ”If I am wed in chain link, I am sure I will make it even more fashionable.” Her smile was wide, and the thought of bringing over their own dressmaker had her more than content. ”I would like that very much. White, with hints of the rich red of the Kotas name, maybe?” She could already picture the flowing gown, the jewels that would cover her neck and ears. Perhaps she and Vangelis could have their own little ceremony up at their point, where he had proposed.
Was the bliss on her face as apparent as it felt?

She wanted to make her family proud, and this seemed to be the perfect way to do it. ”If I am wed in chain link, I am sure I will make it even more fashionable.” Her smile was wide, and the thought of bringing over their own dressmaker had her more than content. ”I would like that very much. White, with hints of the rich red of the Kotas name, maybe?” She could already picture the flowing gown, the jewels that would cover her neck and ears. Perhaps she and Vangelis could have their own little ceremony up at their point, where he had proposed.
Was the bliss on her face as apparent as it felt?
If Evelli knew that Selene imagined herself thinking of her daughter as the dissapointing one, Evelli would've corrected that train of thought first. None of her daughter's were disappointing, and if need be, Evelli would've been more then happy to continue caring for her brood should no husband want them. But Evelli was a realist. She realizes she could not outlive any of her daughters, which meant it was either find them a rich husband with a title that could ensure their cushy lives until their death, or failing which, ensure they had enough gold to never want for anything even after the death of their parents.
First and foremost, she only worried for the happiness of her daughters. While she wanted advantageous marriages for them all, it didn't mean Evelli was going to sacrifice their happiness and welfare for it. So while her first reaction was to immediately be happy that Selene's intended would be a crown prince, she also had to check in on him as a person.
Georgios would have her head otherwise.
"No, it isn't that, Lene." she murmured in response, shaking her head to reassure her eldest before pondering upon what words she could use which would be appropriate to convey what exactly she felt. It was odd, that she's technically now married off two daughters in quick succession, yet each time the news is brought to her, the sense of bittersweetness still remains. "I... may have always wanted a royal husband for my eldest, for I believe that is the only rank that you deserve, I still want you to be happy. You know him better then I do. If you think he suits you, then you have my blessings, and I'm sure your father's as well."
Making a mental note to write to Georgios to update him all on Selene's intended, for he was sure to ask a million questions, Evelli broke into a laugh as Selene dove straight into discussion of dress details and ceremonial, obviously excited for the ceremony. Surely this could only mean her daughter was happy with the decision? If she was, Evelli would then trust her daughter's instinct. Afterall, he was a prince, and in that sense of matter, Evelli could want for nothing more, and only wished for the best moving forward as she nodded to Selene's suggestion of the dress and started to suggest her own embellishments, all thoughts of sleep banished in favor of preparing yet another daughter for a wedding.
