These were not the usual jobs that Krysto took, but the young man hadn't been able to resist the opportunity for something much more exciting than a patrol into the fields. Guarding one of the Leventi ladies while she wandered the markets was not something he would have usually jumped at the chance for. However, he didn't think he could handle yet another day of the same old patrols. He was growing restless and as much as he truly loved and adored his position as an order member, sometimes change was good. While he would never overtly wish a war on anyone, he was starting to hope for something to shake up the monotony of his life.
Doing the same thing every day was so dry.
Dressed in a shorter outfit and outfitted with his more casual set of armor, he hitched his axe to his hip and strailed through the streets of Vasiliadon. Deep in thought, he was hardly aware that his feet carried him directly toward Leventi manor, preparing himself for the day ahead. Shopping wasn't his favorite past time by any means, but it was a delightful change of pace that he wouldn't avoid. At least not now that he was here.
Krysto knew that the lady was not in a massive rush, so he took his time making the way up the path toward the manor home. He observed the landscaping and the few servants milling about who took care of the lawns. The house was sizable, but he had never made the effort to truly observe the area the way that he was now. The gardens were lush, and they reminded him of his home back in Euttica. His sisters would have spent considerable time gushing about how pretty it was, and Krysto would have been forced to agree.
Stepping up the steps of the manor, Krysto introduced himself to the guards. "Krysto of Euttica of the Order. I am here to escort Lady Selene of Leventi to the market today," he said calmly, "Is she to ride or take a carriage?" Surely a lady of her breeding would not walk the whole way to the market. Krysto was not even sure he would allow such a thing to begin with. That presented much more danger than was needed, and Krysto hoped to come out of this day as calm as possible. That was his greatest hope, at least.

Try as she might, the Eldest Leventi daughter could not convince any of her usual suspects to go with her while she shopped in the city. But Theo had opted to stay home in Macendia with the rest of her sisters, and she didn’t exactly feel like trying to keep Nana under control as she wandered. To be honest, she was looking forward to a chance to be by herself, to take her time to find the perfect material for a new chiton. In a house full of sisters, it was nice to get to step back and be alone.
The weather was beyond pleasant, so it wasn’t surprising that she chose one of her lighter day dresses. The material looked to be white, at first glance, but was the palest lavender, which was only made obvious by the lilac himation she pinned around her shoulders. The dark leather belt around her waist was a beautiful contrast with her matching shoes, but as usual, she wore no other jewels save for her Leventi cuff.
As there was little wind for the day, she left her hair down, preferring the loose curls when she could get away with it. And she was glad that her guard seemed to be running more leisurely than normal. It gave her a chance to have a moment with Ophelia before she was informed of his presence. She came around the corner just in time to hear the guard calming explaining to the man that she always walked to the market. ”Yes,” she said with a smile, ”When there is not much on the agenda for the trip, and when I do not have to return in any haste, I like to walk. Unless you would prefer another method, sir.” She asked politely, hoping that he wouldn’t mind walking either.
Brushing her hair off her shoulder, she offered him a bright smile. He was handsome, but so were most of the men in the order. Perhaps he knew of Zacharias-- maybe she could lead the conversation in that direction to see what he knew. If not, perhaps she could try and discover what exactly had been distracting Theo. Maybe he would have a hint as to why she seemed to prefer to keep her own company and sneak around.

Krysto was content to go anywhere and do anything that the Lady Leventi wished. If she wished to walk, then they would walk together. But not too close as to be improper. He didn’t remember having any exact meetings or interactions with Lady Selene, but Krysto was not a stranger to the courts or its people. It was not just the Order that made things such, but also the fact that he spent a majority of his time with Lord Achilleas, and sometimes with Prince Stephanos if he was feeling truly adventurous.
Then again, those small adventures always seemed to end in complete disaster. Horribly so. Krysto wasn’t sure if that was Stephanos’ doing or his own, but he was happy to blame the prince for anything and everything, seeing as the other man had a tendency to act in a way that would allow for the lifting of brows. Krysto himself liked to question him whenever he was able, almost liking the sight of the man growing frustrated with him.
As Lady Selene approached, Krysto straightened up to his full height, taking a single moment to give her a very low bow as was expected of his station and then lift himself back up once more. “I am relieved to hear such a thing. Some days it is nice to give the horses a break from pulling a carriage,” he murmured, also thinking about how taxing it was on the creatures to run with a chariot. Krysto gave the young woman an almost boyish smile, dropping both of his hands to his sides at first so that he could get a good look at her.
It was easiest to pick someone out of a crowd when you could look for a distinguishing feature. The lady was wearing her golden locks down along her back and only wore the Leventi cuff on her arm, which he took immediate note of. If anything were to happen, then he would know what to look for. Not to mention her stunning blue eyes that he quickly decided not to think about.
Instead, Krysto offered Lady Selene his arm, glancing back the way that he came. “Shall we embark?” he asked lightly and without any further preamble. “Is there any specific merchant you are wishing to meet with this morning, Lady Leventi?”

As he spoke, she tried to place the familiarity of his voice. She may not have known his name, but she did recognize him. Perhaps he knew one of her cousins, or was familiar with the royal family. Whatever it was, she was pleased that perhaps they would at least have something in common to speak about as they walked to the market. There were times when she found herself with someone who was duller than dirt. Her mother had always reminded her that most of the ones who couldn’t speak with her often didn’t know what to say.
She had a hard time understanding the whole ‘awed’ thing. While yes, she was known as one of the most attractive women in all of Greece, it didn’t make her any less of a person. Selene enjoyed conversations with those around her, regardless of status. Perhaps she was more focused on those who she might actually build a relationship with, but that didn’t make her any less interested in those who she found in her company.
And she prided herself on being able to converse with anyone, to make them feel important. Wasn’t that the trait of a good and just Queen?
His comment about running the horses brought a soft giggle from her chest. “I would hate to point out that you’ve just accused a Leventi of over-exhausting horses, and yet…” Her voice was light, hoping that she was showing that she was not at all offended with his comment. If anyone knew just how to treat horses, it was the family’s life to breed horses for traits that were valued. Stamina, speed and the like-- and yet, she could not fault him for his care of them. His statement was not untrue. There was humor in it, and she did not mind teasing him in it.
There was a sweetness in his looks, in the brightness of his cheeks at his comment. And so she let out a soft laugh and slipped her arm into his. “I have been working with the saddlemaker in town on fitting a new mount for me. And I am to meet with a seamstress for a fitting, if you have time for pinning.” She hoped that he was interested in a lazy day, “And perhaps just wandering? I heard the last ships were filled to the brim.” It seemed as if she was interested in the material aspect of it, but in reality, she enjoyed the joy of a bustling market.

The young man should not have felt as nervous as he did as the two of them started out in the direction of the market. The perfect gentleman, the Order member offered his arm to Lady Leventi and gave her a quiet smile. One meant to show that he understood that he was being teased by her. Did he mind? Not at all. He couldn’t find it in himself to be upset over a little teasing from a beautiful Lady of her stature when he had spent much of his life already being teased by Princes Stephanos of Mikaelidas.
Gently tucking her hand into his arm, Krysto paused to watch Selene with an almost serene smile that only grew the more that she spoke. If anything, Krysto loved assignments like this. They were simple, easy, and sometimes he even got to complete a bit of his own running of errands at the same time. He could think of a few things that he needed and a bit of wandering in the market was the perfect opportunity to guard the lady and check a few things off of his to do list.
His laugh was warm and quiet and the soldier shook his dark curls a little bashfully. “I assure you, my lady, such was never the intention. Though, I do favor the creatures as well, and I’m sure you also know that they need as much rest as they need activity. Though, perhaps for today, we could leave the activity to the stablehands and enjoy walking the streets instead,” he mused, glancing ahead for a moment as they navigated together toward the exit of the Leventi estate.
Her list of errands she wanted to run was rather simple. He had done more intensive orders recently, so the change of pace was incredibly welcome in the moment. “The entirety of my day is yours to command, Lady Leventi. I have time for whatever it is you need of me. Pinning and all,” his blue gaze was bright as he said it, his smile still lighting his face in a rather intelligent way. “I am hoping that you are right about the ships. There are a few items I should pick out for the Order cooks and my own medicinal stocks. If, that is, you don’t mind allowing me a few minutes of my own to make a few purchases.” Krysto was quite sure that she wouldn’t. Lady Selene didn’t seem the type to act petulant about such a small request.

It was not common for Selene to lack someone familiar to travel to the market with. A gaggle of sisters and cousins meant that she could usually find some familial company and a known guard to head to market with. It was rare that she would demand to go, to require an odd Order member to attend to her. But her uncle had been feeling agreeable when he had procured her an escort. Hand delicately laid on his forearm, she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief as he seemed to keep any effects of her appearance to himself.
Gods, the ones she had gone with in the past could barely speak to her. Or would attempt to woo her into some sort of affair. For some, she was a challenge that needed to be won. But he seemed content on simply doing as she wished without any sort of expectations from her. So long as it stayed that way, maybe she could keep him in the back of her mind for future endeavors.
As they made their way to the gates, she laughed. “I tend to favor riding the horses themselves versus the use of a carriage, anyway. I am a Leventi, after all.” She lifted her head in fake abhorrence that he’d even suggested that she would only seek a carriage. But the statement, followed with a giggle, was a sure sign that she was simply teasing him. The light banter was setting the tone for him, to make sure that he knew that most of her reputation was simply gossip driven. She was far less high brow than society thought her to be. “Tis a good thing I’ve already gone for my morning ride. My mare is happily bedded down, though she, like I, loves to roam.”
She wondered if he would think that the comment would allude to a desire to disappear without him. That was not the intent, but happily tucking herself into him so that he would at least think her obedient.
As they walked, and he easily accepted the duty of her guard, she couldn’t help but laugh at his instant agreement to wait with her as she was pinned for a new gown. “Do you have sisters, Krysto? I feel you would not so readily agree to a pinning if that were the case. It can be a long, boring affair, even more so for the one standing with the fabric on. But I already have your agreement, so you’ll be unable to backout now. I would make a point to eat prior to that, so you do not starve while waiting.” Her mother was rarely one to go with her for a pinning unless she herself was also being fitted. And her mother had always preferred to have the seamstress come to her, instead of the other way around. Selene, however, did not wish to put the lady out for just one dress.
Her eyes danced at the thought of being able to see things that she would have perhaps not been allowed to see. “I have no problems accompanying you on whatever errands you wish to complete. It is the least I can do for agreeing.” He mentioned medicine, and she was curious as to his role and knowledge. “Maybe I can learn from you then, if you know medicine. I’ve always been curious about the healing arts, but never had an ear to pick.” The day was looking like it would be an enjoyable one, to say the least.

The young Captain had heard a number of things about Lady Selene of Leventi, but like with most people and things, Krysto reserved his judgements and preconceived notions of the woman. There was no reason to jump to conclusions before he even knew the woman. It was not proper, nor wise, nor polite to be accusatory of the company that he kept. Besides, he was of far less rank than the woman that held onto his arm, and while he thought her beautiful, he was not so tongue tied to not allow himself pleasant conversation. Getting to know the woman would be useful for the future.
If things went well, then it was likely that she would call on him for further escorts, and he would never truly be without worthwhile work. Lady Selene seemed humorous in her temperament, something else Krysto enjoyed and could not overlook for anything. Smiling, though he tried to keep it to a minimum, his expression one of tight control, though his humor did betray him, the soldier shrugged lightly when she observed about her horse. She would not be the first lady he escorted who liked to roam. Having grown up with Lord Achilleas had the worthwhile perk of knowing exactly how to serve the Lords and Ladies of nobility and royalty, as well as how to keep them in his sights at all times even as they wandered aimlessly through markets or shadier parts of town.
It was not his job to ask questions.
The first question Lady Selene asked of him had the man actually smiling this time, his head turning slightly so that he could look at her properly. "I'm the youngest of nine other children. Two sisters, six brothers," he observed in an amused tone. "I am not foreign to having to accompany my sisters and my mother to dress fittings," for while he was not a noble, his family was wealthy without land or title. His father a famous physician and his mother a professional artist, it was hard to see how they had made their fortunes together. "I have an infinite amount of patience, I assure you, my lady," Krysto conceded quietly, then, "Would you wish to stop for something to eat before your fitting?"
He felt he could relax in this situation, easily moving at her side as they navigated the paths deeper into the city so that they might visit the market. It was a peaceful walk. Without incident. That alone was pleasing to Krysto, but he wasn't sure if Lady Selene wished there had been a little more excitement. Her statements of wanting to learn about medicine, though, had his gaze falling upon her beautiful features again. His heart did beat up in his throat, but it was simple enough to speak with his same even tone. "My father is the physician Akylas of Euttica," he observed calmly, "Everything I learned, I learned from him," the smile had returned, "Though I am not opposed to handing off the knowledge he instilled in me to someone else, especially if you intend to use it in your future." Unlikely, but not impossible. Men went to war, and the women were left to heal those who returned.
