The water was a pleasant temperature, soothing and easing his tight muscles. Silas' eyes closed of their volition as he sat, not a noise from him as slaves came and went. He had recently returned from a short visit to another providence. There was less produce then there should have been, so he had ridden out to investigate as to the reasons. He had assumed it was due to the storm and the baron had proved him correct. The storm had decimated their crops, it would be inhuman for them to produce as much as they normally would. He hadn't taken a break while in the Providence, wanting to return to Midas as soon as possible. Yiannis and Zanon were still in the city, lending a hand to their mother with the responsibilities of the kingdom.
Silas opened his eyes and lifted up his hand, which was beginning to prune up. He let out a small sigh, running it over the smooth rock of the outer edge of the bath. There was no one else in the bath, it being a peculiar time of the day to be using the bathroom. His back wasn't happy with the way he had been carrying himself in the saddle, and his thighs were even angrier. Sitting in the water had made him feel a little better, as the tense muscles had relaxed. He knew that he couldn't stay in much longer, with his wrinkled skin and usage of the heating. It was summer, so they wouldn't need it for much more than the baths but he didn't like to be the one draining resources.
He supposed that a better use of his time would be to help repair after the fire but there wasn't much he could do but stand around and look pretty. He scoffed at himself and his lousy attitude as he stood up. The slave boy raced over and handed him a towel which Silas used to dry himself off before being handed his chiton. He slid it around his dry shoulders and pinned it. His hands moved swiftly through the fabric as he tied it up. He stepped away from the slave boy and excited the bathing area. It was time that he do something useful, which would almost certainly mean that he would need to find a brother. Zanon or Yiannis were sure to give him something to do so that he didn't step on either of their toes. Things were already hard enough as they were.
He stopped a steward as they passed by, his voice hushed as he asked the man where Yiannis or Zanon was. The steward stammered something about Zanon being out on the practice fields with Dion so Silas' accepted that as an answer. His walk was brisk but not rushed. He wasn't tripping over himself to get there but he wanted to know if he could be of any help. He couldn't recall Zanon spending much time with Dion in the previous months but he didn't want to question it. His brother had more of a right to see his son then Silas but it did surprise him a little. It took him a moment to realise that he'd need a bow, so he interrupted yet another slave. Silas requested that his new bow be brought to the practice fields as soon as possible, his tone firm.
The prince continued on his way, his chiton swaying as he walked, the wind fluttering the edges. He approached the practice fields, his eyes soft as he watched his older brother with his nephew. It was lovely to see that they were father-son bonding and he almost didn't join them. Would Zanon appreciate him intruding on the lesson? It seemed to be about archery like the steward had told him, but Zanon was an excellent archer. It wasn't like he needed help to teach his child how to shoot a bow.
This hesitation only lasted for a brief moment before he moved forward and gave them both broad smiles. "Fancy seeing you two out here."

This hesitation only lasted for a brief moment before he moved forward and gave them both broad smiles. "Fancy seeing you two out here."
”Keep your elbow bent slightly, don’t hold it out so straight.”
Zanon knelt at his son’s side as Dion struggled to pull back the string of his heavy bow and keep his arm from shaking. The boy had a tendency to try to correct any wobbling by holding his arm out straight and locked instead of cultivating the strength for the bend. It wasn’t something that couldn’t be fixed, and indeed after only half an hour the eleven year old was starting to correct the little alterations that he had been offered. He was good at taking direction, a good trait in a prince and a soldier who would serve his family for years to come. There was a caution to the boy too, a desire to think things out before jumping into them headfirst. It was something of himself that Zan recognized in his son.
The arrow flew as Dion released his hold on the string, landing on the lower left edge of the target instead of the center, but based on the boy’s smile and the many other arrows scattered about the ground near the target instead of on it, he could tell it was a win. It was his own fault that he had all but left his son’s life for the past three years, his own fault that instead of having time to practice his soldierly pursuits he had instead been coddled and babied by his Thanasi relations. At least he was well read, that would be a mark in his favor, but he was a Kotas, and the Kotas princes had to be able to fight and survive. He would have to make up for lost time to ensure Dion managed before the mines
”Well done, you’re getting closer every time.” A familiar voice caught his attention and Zanon straightened with a squeeze to Dion’s shoulder, both of them grinning at the sight of Silas. The child beamed at his uncle, looked as if he was about to toss the bow aside and then caught sight of the look on his father’s face, setting it down as if it were made of the most fragile glass before launching himself at Silas.
”Uncle you’ve returned! Will you stay long this time? Father has been helping me with archery, well so has Aunt Asia, but now she’s gone to Taengea with Uncle Vang, so we’re out here practicing to show them how much better I’ve gotten when they come back!”
Chuckling at his son’s enthusiasm, Zanon closed the gap and held out his hand, clasping his brother’s arm in greeting and ruffling his son’s dark hair.
”We are indeed. How about a competition? You can show Silas how far you’ve come if you go collect all of the arrows and we’ll shoot again.” That was enough to send Dion scampering through the field, scouring the grass for arrows as the second prince turned to his youngest brother. ”He is doing well. I worry still that spending so much time with the Thanasi softened him, but...enough of that. How are you, brother?”

Silas' smile grew impossibly large as his nephew placed the bow down and ran towards him. He caught the young boy with one of his arms and gave him a tight side hug. He listened to the rambling with a fond grin on his face, nodding along. "I'll be here for a few days, to help your father and Uncle Yiannis and then I'm going back to Chaossis. Sorry Dion, maybe I'll stay longer when they come back?" He offered, not wanting to disappoint the boy. He couldn't stay much longer but it wasn't fair on the boy if he couldn't see his uncle. He glanced towards Zanon, "Asia and Zanon have been teaching you? That is very good news. They are almost as good as I am." He teased, his eyes sliding back to the young boy in front of him. Silas ruffled Dion's hair and stepped into his brother's embrace.
"It's good to see you again Zanon." He added as his nephew raced off to collect the arrows. He gave him a doubtful look as Zanon explained that he thought spending time with the Thanasi family would soften him. "There is nothing soft about that family Zan if anything they would sharpen his wit." He responded, before accepting the change of subject. Zanon surely knew his own in-laws better, even if Silas had a different opinion. "I am well as can be, a little tired but I'll get some sleep and that will go away. How are you? Evras and Dion are okay?" He kept an eye on Dion who seemed perfectly happy to find the arrows, not a scratch on him. From what Silas knew, his nephew was at home when the fire broke out anyway but it was always good to check.
"I was speaking with mother recently," He bit off of the rest of his sentence, sliding his eyes over to his brother. "She's been discussing with the House of Mikaelidas about a marriage between Princess Gianna and I. Did...did you know about this?" He finally got to the point, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. He supposed that both he and the princess were the perfect age to marry, but he was a little put out that their parents were discussing it but not to him. He supposed that he hadn't expressed any interest in marriage and with Vangelis actively looking for a wife, he and Yiannis would be two brothers left unmarried. Silas was the most agreeable of the two, and he wasn't against the arrangement. Politically it was a sound move, and the two even got along well. He just felt slighted that it hadn't been mentioned to him before now.

”Ahh don’t listen. You know full well we all think we’re the best, perhaps Dion will outshine us all.”
Zanon chuckled at the banter between his son and brother, crossing his arms over his chest to hide the swell of pride he felt as Dion rushed off to find all of his arrows, happily taking his time over it to be sure he didn’t miss a thing. Turning his full attention to Silas, he clapped him on the back as they stood back a ways to talk without being in the youngest prince’s earshot in case there were sensitive topics that Silas had come seeking him for. Making a face at his youngest brother’s description of the Thanasi family, the second prince wrinkled his nose at the thought.
”Sharp, maybe the women. Have you spoken to Mihail lately? The man is useless.” No, with any luck Dion would take only the best traits from both families and use it to his own advantage as he grew up. So far the boy had the makings of a fine prince, one that would honor and do proud the Kotas family name. And he gave the Thanasi what they really wanted, a foothold in the royal family of power. But, there were more important things to discuss than his son’s bloodline and the family of conniving schemers.
Frowning as Silas’ tone changed, he kept his eyes on Dion as he listened, arms still crossed over his chest. He kept quiet for a long moment, he had heard vague whispers of matches to be made, but he hadn’t known anything to be set in stone, hadn’t really properly paid attention since those talks distracted from time he was using to become reacquainted with the family that he had foolishly pushed away from him for three years. Important things could wait when he was tangled up in Evras’ arms or sparring with his son in moments like this. It allowed a truth to the response he had, as he finally turned to look at the youngest.
”I hadn’t heard anything was certain. Only that Mother had been looking and talking and being as mother as she always is. It is about time after all, Vang is off to get his goddess blessed bride no matter what he says he’ll bring her back, I have a feeling. You and Yiannis are next, and if they’ve managed Gianna for you it’s well earned praise.” He gave what he hoped was a reassuring smile, venturing into territory that was unfamiliar for him. His own marriage had been rather unconventional for a prince, being only eighteen and already a father to be when the marriage was finally performed. Now, he wouldn’t have it any other way, but not everyone could be given such a choice.
”I’ve heard tell she’s very beautiful, if that helps at all. And you know Mother won’t suffer any fools, so she must have done something to make her agreeable.”

Dion gave his uncle a bright smile and then hugged him back just as tightly. For now the world was darn near perfect and he was both happy and excited. Competition was something he really liked and he found himself really looking forward to it. It took a lot for him not to frown at hearing that Silas was only going to be here for a few days. Dion was sure that Silas noticed considering his next question to him.
Dark hair bouncing as he nodded and bounced on his toes in reply, Dion blurted out, ”Yes please Uncle Silas!”. Dion nodded more at hearing him mention the help with his training ”Yes.
Dion grinned like he had just been given Apollo’s lyre as his hair was ruffled and then he laughed. He then became part of the sandwich as brother hugged brother. When he could move, he ran off to collect the arrows giggling as he went.
The young prince had been untouched physically by the most recent event in the realm’s history, but it was very likely that he knew of what had happened because something that big would be hard to keep hidden, even if they wanted to protect him.
Oblivious to the talk of marriage between his father and uncle, Dion danced around picking up the arrows as he went and once he was sure he had them all he skipped back to his father and waited with them in his hands.
