She was finding she enjoyed the excited and chirpy persona that Athanasia had, how eager she was to learn, and how her smile was so bright when she shoved her dagger away and held up a bow and arrow. This weapon was, in all honesty, one of Nike's least familiar weapons to use. She had always trained with swords, daggers and spears - a bow and arrow had always been considered those for females, and Nike faced enough trouble with her military comrades without giving them more reason to ridicule her for using a weapon considered feminine.
But she was eager to try.
Taking the bow from Athanasia, she held it as one would hold a sword, until the princess corrected her hold. Holding her limbs limp so the younger one could easily amend whatever needed to be amended. Nodding with each instruction, she bit her lip, a habit that Nike did when she was focused. "Grace and fluid motion, huh?" she murmured in echo.
When Athanasia stepped back, Nike tried her best to retain the position that the princess had put her in, and then gave a wry smile at Athanasia. "Awkward. This isn't something I'm used to. But I guess grace is necessary before I snap this bow, right?" Nike flashed a glance at her that hid a laugh, and then focused back on the bow she held, biting her lip again. Attempting to pull on the bow, she did not attempt to pull it harder, and then relaxed her position and turned to Athanasia. "And the arrow? How does this fit in all of this?"

Watching as Nike held the bow, looking as awkward as a brand new baby deer learning to take its first few steps, Athanasia had to smile as she adjusted her arms. "Graceful and fluid, like a stag. He is powerful and protective of his herd, but as he leaps and moves, he is graceful. Fluid with each movement, almost like water." Athanasia tried to look away and focus on anything but Nike biting his lip, not understanding why it irked her so even as she found herself fascinated yet. *Focus on the lesson, do not lose focus and end up looking stupid.*
Watching as Nike held the pose, angling her feet correctly and holding the bow as if he were about to shoot an arrow right then, Asia started to circle him as she took it all in. "I can see how it could be awkward for someone used to just charging right into things, but this is helpful too if you think about it. Imagine sitting in the trees, your prey just under you and unaware that you are there. You have a quick and easy kill, yes? Now, if you charge in with just a sword, there is a chance that your prey can fight back and possibly kill you instead."
Taking out a single arrow, she handed it over to Nike to watch and see what all he knew. "The arrow is the most important part of all. It is your blade, but with a longer reach. If you threw your sword or your dagger at that tree, there is a chance it will bounce off or that you may luck out and get it to stick, but think of how hard you would have had to throw it." After making sure Nike nocked the arrow in the right spot, she motioned for Nike to move into the position she first showed him. "Make sure you pull from here.." Asia placed her hand against his back right where his shoulder blades were for a moment before stepping back. "Now.. aim for the tree, touch your thumb knuckle to the corner of your mouth, let go when you are ready."

To this end, Nike was now sure she was definitely not a panther or a feline animal who would wait for her prey and pounce on them. She was more akin to a wolf or lioness who hunted for her prey in a group, and went in with all the rage and fire of killing - an instinct that Athanasia's brother had trained into her afterall. What the princess explained made perfect sense. The bow was a lot more flimsy and breakable then her blades and daggers, so a deft hold would be required for it. She had deftness, but Nike definitely did not have the control over her strength just yet.
"I'll try, but no promises." she muttered with a laugh in her tone when Athanasia told her to imagine. Nike had trained her accuracy and speed for years, but Athanasia's words made sense. If she could take out her enemy before she attacked, it would cull their numbers and make it easier. That was why there were archers on the frontline, before the military took over when the enemy got too close.
Taking the arrow Athanasia handed over to her, she somehow managed to nock the arrow in the spot with the princess's guidance. Noticing how sharp the arrow was, Nike also noted that with he wooden arrow, it was not as heavy as a dagger's hit, but it was faster and she imagined it would whistle through the air to find its target, hitting it straight and true. It was a deadly weapon if one had the good aim to use it.
Nodding, the habit of biting her lip returned again as she pulled where Asia had indicated, elbows straining to get the string pulled back as much as she could without the fear of it snapping. Focusing, Nike instinctively closed one eye to aim for the tree that Athanasia had indicated, and then released her hold, hearing the arrow whistle through...
And fell halfway through its path to the ground. Nike cursed, and then turned a sheepish glance at Athanasia. "I... could try again?" she murmured, embarassedly running a hand through her short dark hair.

Asia watched with pride as Nike followed her directions, each stance held just as she showed. How could she not? It was because of what she was teaching that Nike seemed to catch on to how it was best to use the bow. So when he let go of the string, Asia watched the bow go flying just to end up in the dirt. For a moment, Asia just stared at where the landed arrow ended up, wondering just how it got there before suddenly, she couldn't help but giggle. It was her fault that for the moment, she let the anticipation build to the point that when the mistake was made, it made everything pop around her like a bubble that burst.
"Sorry, I don't mean to giggle. Here." Handing over a new arrow, Asia watched as Nike nocked the arrow again and pulled the string back. "There. I see where we messed up." She smiled as she walked around Nike, finding it a lot of fun teaching him as she motioned at his arm to pull back more. "Pull it back further. You can trust the cord to not break, but for power and speed, you need to pull it back." To show, Asia pushed at Nike's arm, making him pull the string back even further as the bow itself creaked a little. It was the sound that told Asia that it was almost to the right point, pushing Nike's guiding arm that held the wood so his reach was expanded that much more before stepping back. "Now try, but don't tilt your head into aim. I learned the hard way that the cord hurts if it smacks you in the face."*

The princess's giggle brought a flush to Nike's cheeks - luckily her skin was bronzed enough for it to be barely noticeable, but the commander instinctively ducked her head to hide it as best as she could. You would think that for someone with Nike's history, she would be used to failure, what with all the trials and tribulations she's had to go through in her first few years of being in the military, failing almost every physical and being unable to compare to the naturally stronger and more muscular of her cohorts.
But she had her pride, especially after Vangelis had promoted her. It wasn't offensive, but it was there as proud as the way she wore her commander's armor.
Instinctively shaking her head when Athanasia apologized, Nike kept her silence as she picked up the new arrow the princess handed her, fighting to keep the flush from raising to her cheeks again, and instead focused on concentrating on her words. Tilting her head again where Asia pointed, she did as the younger one motioned, ears eagerly picking up the instructions. Nike had always been a fairly good student - it was why she caught up so easily to her general's instructions.
"How... far back?" she murmured, but they were words mostly meant for herself, as she bit her lip. Her brows furrowed from the way she focused, unused to the flimsy feeling of a bow. Could such a small weapon prove to be that deadly? Nodding steadfastly, her eyes were trained on the tree, and then with a steady hand, she released the cord.
More on target this time, the arrow Nike had released flew in an arch in the air. In a way, while it was not the trajectory the commander had planned for the arrow, she was thankful that it didn't fall flat to the dirt again.
Until a loud squawk broke the silence when her arrow dived into the leaves in the tree top, followed by a fall of a feathery creature into a low thud on the ground of the forest. Nike froze, and then blinked slowly at Athanasia. "Was... that supposed to happen?" she sheepishly muttered, eyes shiftily looking at Athanasia. Letting the hand holding the bow now drop to her side, Nike jogged over to the bush which the creature had fell, and winced when she saw a dark, feathred, definitely dead creature lying with the arrow embedded in its side.
"So... right. Do cooks use these?"

"So... right. Do cooks use these?"
Athanasia watched as Nike shook off her apology, the thought made her wonder if this was how Zanon felt when he was training her. As they were working on Nike's stance, adjusting for how far he pulled the bow, Asia smiled at his question. "You pull back till you think the cord may break, the wood creaks, and your arm is stretched out while your shoulder muscles burn." It wasn't an exact science for Asia, but how she described it it was for what she knew and how she perceived it.
Asia watched as Nike pulled the string back, releasing the arrow with a more satisfying flight that had her clapping Nike on the back as she looked over at him proudly. "Much-" Asia was interrupted by a loud squawk before a small feathered body fell to the earth, making her smile even bigger. "better. Well... That wasn't supposed to happen but now we can say that you went hunting and killed with a bow." Taking the bow that Nike had lowered, Asia nocked another arrow as she walked over to the tree that the pheasant was perched in, looking for another. "Sometimes, there are two and yes we can cook them. That is a pheasant, one of my favorites."
A soft fluttering sound could be heard from above, a soft movement before a leaf fell that had Asia's complete attention. It was then in a quick motion, she lifted her bow and pulled back her arm, letting the arrow go quickly just as the second pheasant tried to escape but failed to as Asia's arrow sliced through it and fell to the ground. "I almost feel bad for them." It was a moment of empathy that had Asia feeling bad even as she knew that it was eat or die as she picked it up from where it landed, and she liked feeding herself and her family. "Be right back. Have you ever had pheasant eggs for breakfast before?" Handing the dead bird to Nike so he could pair it with his own, she started looking around for the nest. It wasn't a hard task since she knew that they liked to make their little homes on the ground in nooks and crannies, so when she spotted the markings around a cluster of rocks nearby, Asia smiled. Looking under the overhanging rock, she could see the clutch. "Do you have a pouch to carry all these in? There has to be at least 15 of them, if not more possibly." As she started to pull out the eggs, she placed them gently on the ground beside her as she counted. "After this do you want to head back home or keep hunting more? I am ok with hunting more if you want too, could try for bigger game?"

Nike's grip was loose as Asia took the bow from her - the newly minted commander was still mildly shocked at the fact that she had just managed to kill a bird despite her being a first timer. Beginners luck? Highly probable, especially considering she had been aiming at nothing in particular really. A small chuckle escaped her when Asia technically complimented her - it passed muster as a compliment right? That she managed to kill something on a hunt (never mind the fact that it was never meant to be a hunt to begin with) on her first try?
Following Asia as she walked to the tree, the commander listened quietly to the princess's explanations, and then surprise colored her gaze when Athanasia quickly nocked and shot another one. Sure enough, the other body fell with a soft thump.
Funny, how as a military trained soldier, she had killed and maimed many with little qualm on the battlefield, yet she couldn't stop the slight wince when Athanasia picked up the dead pheasants. In a way, the woman guessed that her logic helped her on the battlefield. There it was kill or be killed, for the protection of one's kingdom, people and loved ones. Here? The creatures had been harmlessly roosting in the trees - why did she have to go and play God?
But one needed to be fed, in a way.
Nike shook her head at Asia's question, never having given the pleasure of such food. She had been but a lowly soldier, and even now as a commander of the crown prince in Colchis, Nike had yet to feel comfortable partaking in the greater riches available to her now, not one to bask in name and glory. She did what she did from duty, responsibility, loyalty and affection for her general, not for what it may gain her. "Mostly chicken eggs, really. The occasional treat of fowl." she murmured, taking the dead bird from Athanasia with another wince, holding both in her hands.
Following her over to where she had discovered the eggs, Nike looked down, and then back at the princess. Pouch? She looked down again, and then back at Athanasia, an almost beguilingly lost look on her face, before shrugging the leather vest she had laid over her tunic off her shoulders. "Would this work?" she asked, handing the material to Athanasia, crouching down next to her to help in placing the fragile things on her vest, intending to bundle it up so they could at least carry them safely.
"I don't think I'm that great as to get to the big game now, Princess." she murmured gently, flashing Athanasia a cheeky smile that clearly showed her sheepish manner. In a way, it was a good thing Nike had ended up in the position she was, a female in disguise as part of the military. As a female, she would have been extremely cheeky and outspoken - unbecoming for a woman of their time. "Perhaps the next time, we could go and get that big game? Some practice would make it easier for me, I surmise. And you can check on my progress - I promise I'll practice everyday like a good student." A hint of laughter rippled through her tone as she spoke, as she bundled up the last of the eggs, gently wrapped hr soft leather vest around them, and ensured they were safely in Athanasia's hands, before picking up the pheasant she had laid on the dirt ground. "Shall we head back then? I'm sure the cooks will be happy to see what we've gained for them for our meal."

Asia never noticed the surprise on Nike's face as she showed the skills that she had accumulated over the years of hunting and practicing. So after they gathered everything up, now it was Athanasia's turn to look up at him in surprise. "Never? Well, we should change that." As she handed over the other dead bird, Asia couldn't help shake her head a little as Nike flinched at being handed a dead bird. How would that work, she wondered. How could one kill someone, probably with no remorse, and yet have an issue with a bird?
When Asia went looking for the nest, it was a moment of sheer thrill when the bounty was discovered. "Well, today you get to try pheasant as well as their eggs. That is, if you want to that is." Taking the leather vest that Nike had offered, Asia smiled her thanks as she transfered the eggs to it. "This works very well, thank you. Much better than our arms, since it's so easy to drop these things." Athanasia had plenty of experence in finding out just how fragile an egg was, and how clumsy she could be with them. At offer of going home or hunting more, Asia shook her head at Nike's answer and gave him a smile back that matched his own. "Now that I do not believe. With your second shot ever, you snagged us a decent lunch. Imagine what would happen if you took a third shot? Maybe could hit a buck?" Now she was teasing him though the pride showed in her eyes, it wasn't every day she got to teach anyone and find out that she was actually good at it. So when Nike suggested for them to go hunting for the bigger game next time, Asia nodded her agreement. "It's a deal then. Next time, you will get the big buck." Taking up the eggs that Nike handed over, Asia found out that she actually had alot of fun today, even when she thought her new friend was going to turn her in. "Yes, I think we should go home. I do not know about you, but I am hungry now." With a laugh, Asia headed with Nike towards home to hand over their bounty.
