The Queen had never been particularly fond of court sessions, but they were a necessity that came along with her title. Even now, with their military gone, including most of her sons and her husband, court must still be held. And so, she had made the necessary arrangements and made sure there was plenty of guards stationed at the ready. After everything that had been happening, she wasn’t taking any chances with anything. The chamber was crawling with guards, decked out in regal Kotas armour, brand new and shining, but practical if it came down to the guards needing to get into combat.
She herself wore a modest dress of Kotas red, flowing sleeves covering her arms. The only jewels she wore was her wedding ring, the usual necklace she wore that her husband had given to her upon the birth of their daughter, and some fine golden chains and jewels woven throughout the intricate braids in her hair. She looked everything like the Queen she presented herself as. Strong and beautiful, the face of the royal family while her husband and eldest son were away.
She had a glass of wine in her hand already, one from her personal supply, that had been taste tested before the Queen would drink it, to make sure there was no poison attempts again, at least no on her life. She stood waiting, four personal guards waiting behind her to make sure she remained safe at all costs. People began to file in, and she greeted them with a small smile as they did, using appropriate titles and varying degrees of respectful nods based on their noble status.
She wished to get this done and over with, to return to her own chambers and not have to plaster on a fake smile. Her heart had left her once more as her husband and sailed off, and she far from felt like spending her time in a room full of gossip and fake friendships. Alas, life had to continue on as usual, even with war looming above their heads, and the lives of family and friends on the line.
She took a long drink from her wine, brown eyes scanning the faces as people crowded in, none of which drew her interest, as much as they might want to have the attention of the Queen. She knew that she would have to make conversation with some of them, formalities required of her in her position. She had spent her entire life socializing with noble families that she couldn’t care for, because they were important in the scheme of things and the connections that the Kotas family needed to keep.
None of the people who she needed to keep those connections with were there yet though, and as such, she remained with her guards and drank her wine, awaiting the arrival of the higher class of the court numbers. The lesser courtesans were not important enough to draw her from her spot or hold her attention.

Nethis entered in Thanasi red, alone, family guards abandoned outside in favor of ones belonging to the Kotas. There was always unease in this, but today’s was somehow both more and less than usual; Dionysios’ actions made Kotas ’protection’ settle uneasily atop her skin even with a resolution well within grasp, a palpable second layer only bearable in the mitigation that came of the positions held by Thea and Evras.
Their relationships lent her power, leverage that she knew how to manipulate and social currency that left little to be desired in a room like this; it didn’t matter what the whispers were or how many times she made a spectacle of herself, she garnered attention and good, bad or otherwise, she knew what to do with it. It was like breathing for her, the way her eyes played across the room, alighting here and there on familiar faces, taking in the room as it stood as she paused just inside the entranceway.
Here, her lips pursed.
Who she wanted to see were her sisters, but instead, there were a dozen familiar faces of people she didn’t want to talk to for one reason or another. Included in this was Yanni, a woman she somehow simultaneously had no connection to at all and plenty; Evras’ mother-in-law and soon to be Thea’s assuming nothing fell apart before Vangelis came back—that potential was never far from mind, all things considered, because she needed this and there were no guarantees when it came to pregnancies and war—there were two degrees of separation between them which made contact all the more unavoidable.
For a moment, Nethis continued to scan the room wondering if she could quickly find Thea or Evras and thereby avoid more than perfunctory interaction with the woman. She suspected exchanging a quiet nod and a quick greeting in passing would be more than enough for both of them.
Unfortunately, circumstances provided little choice but to do more. She stepped into the room more fully and nodded at Yanni, dropping into an easy, quick curtsey just after.
"Your Majesty." The title slid from lips easily, the start to a greeting; she had long wanted it for one of her blood after its current owner, but despite that, she didn’t dislike Yanni for having it; after Evras and Dion she actually bore Yanni the least amount of ill will on the face of it. Truly, her distaste wasn’t so much about family and allegiance as it was about personality. Nethis simply didn’t like the woman; it was that superficial.
As such, it wasn’t so hard to hide that behind a courtier’s smile and play the game as it was meant to played, at least for now. "A pleasure, though perhaps one less than usual. The timing makes for keenly felt absences."
She gave the sentiment its due, reflecting briefly on the fact that it had only been four days, but somehow, she actually missed Mihail a little. She chalked it up to a kernel of worry, blamed the tangible uncertainty regarding his safety and resolved to ignore it.
Traitorous fucking heart for making her feel even as she had long wanted it dead.
In a bid to avoid lingering in it, she offered a question, too, hoping it might be an avenue with which to close this quickly, "I apologize for asking, but have you seen either of my sisters?" Another time, months ago, she wouldn’t have bothered her with it, but it was hardly inappropriate anymore, all things considered.

Evras knew she was supposed to be on bedrest. That was what the physician had told her just a few days ago and the princess had honestly tried her best to comply, but as the preparations got underway, a niggling sense of worry had begun to chip away at her mind. This was the first court session after the kingdom had been rocked by the supposed tragedy, and now in the face of the departure of their men to fight a war on the Egyptian forefront, there would be no doubt many tongues flying as gossips, news and words were exchanged.
It made the young princess antsy that she wouldn't be there to at least have some modicum of control over it. Oh, she knew the Queen would be there, and no one dared say a word against the powerful Yanni of Kotas's words. But she had her own worries, especially in regards to what had happened with her father, and how Evras had more or less walked out of her family dinnner and would likely be seeing more lashback from her father in the days to come. It didn't help that while she and Zanon had come to a tentative truce after what had started as an argument that night of the fateful dinner where Tython had reppeared, neither parent of the young Dion of Kotas had had time to speak with each other, especially in the midst of preparing their young son to go for his stint in the mines.
With all of that taking place, Evras decided to eventually dress up. She hadn't moved a muscle from her chambers over the last few days, surely a short trip to the Dikasitirio just to ensure all was well, wouldn't hurt? She had begun to feel the babe within her abdomen again, and of late had even begun speaking to the growing child within her, telling them stories of their elder sibling, and all the wishes, hopes and dreams Evras had for them. It wouldn't hurt for a brief moment, would it?
Her belly was obvious now no matter how much Evras tried to hide it, and at five months, there really was no hiding the swell. As such, she instead just chose to chinch her teal chiton just beneath her chest with a silver woven string. Sleeves were tied over her shoulders and material left to hang like seafoam around her arms, and her dark hair was curled and tied partially tied up, leaving the rest to frame her face. The pregnancy was beginning to take a toll on her, and the princess had to resort to getting some paint and kohl around her eyes to prevent herself from looking like a ghost, waiting for the maids to place the simplet circlet of ivy leaves around the crown of her head, before leaving for the carriage awaiting her.
Arrriving at the Dikasitirio however, was enough to stir a sense of unease in her, especially when Evras spotted the carriage of her birth family. No doubt, her eldest sister was here, what with Thea being in the Kotas manor together with her. Evras had yet to seek out her second sister to find out what exactly had transpired and resulted in Thea's stay there, but seeing Nethis alone did not bode well after their last disastrous family meal. But she had no choice. Their father could not reject the Queen's command for her to stay within her chambers, and as such Evras had been relieved of Dionysios's command to attend to him every evening - but she had yet to find out what has happened to their father since then. As it was, Evras stood on the cusp of completely cutting ties with her father if he insisted on continously placing Dion in such tenuous positions.
Taking a deep breathe, Evras descended the carriage with much assistance from the servants, and then slowly approached the entrance just as she heard Nethis's question. "I'm right here, Nethis." she murmured, approaching with a soft smile, and then a guilty look at the Queen, especially when her husband approached and took up a position next to his mother. The Queen had informed Evras she would tell Zanon on the physician's instructions, and seeing as this was the first time she's seen her husband in days, she assume the Queen had done so. She would no doubt be taken to task for ignoring what the Queen and physician had told of her to do, but it wouldn't hurt, just for a little while, right? Evras directed a shallow curtsy at the Queen after flashing a watery smile at Nethis. "Your Majesty, I thought to be of assistance briefly, before I return to my quarters."

All her life, Thea was prone to keeping silent if given the option. This kept her away from most eyes and ears, her words usually spared for her family and only the most cordial of social situation. Silence suited her, it kept emotion away. There was a comfort in pressing her lips together and sealing the thoughts within, keeping them to herself alone.
Everything changed the moment she arrived at the Kotas manor, situated into the guest quarters unceremoniously, and outfitted with her own Kotas guard at the doorway. It was the lastest Thanasi fashion, it seemed - one to match her Father's.
Silence was no longer an option. While her royal-blooded status allowed her to step away from most uncomfortable conversations without an issue. However, given the circumstances and restrictions placed on her, she was faced with the unavoidable reality. On top of that, there was no avoiding the visitors she received - after all, no one could deny the King, Queen, and stream of Princes whose request for an audience was unable to be refused.
There were many poisons that could slowly kill any living being, but being watched and discussed endlessly over the passing days was slowly killing her - if not physically, then in spirit.
Worst of all, the small circle who knew the circumstances, did not even seem to feel concern for her. Vangelis certainly did not and made so much clear in his preference for the care of the unborn heir she carried over her own personal feelings. Despite insisting that she would take not further actions against the child within her, his bull-headed and stalwart stances remained in place.
Although the forces had left for foreign shores, dressing in her finest and putting her best foot forward when Queen Yanni called for court was an opportunity to perhaps alleviate the pressures and restrictions placed on her. Thea may have managed to find herself in this ludicrous situation, but she was not stupid - if she wanted something, she had to play the part to get her way.
With the majority of her affects still at the Thanasi manor or forbidden to be given to her on his order, Thea found herself endlessly bored. So, in that respect as well, attending court became an oddly welcome alternative. Did she truly want to interact with other Colchian nobles there? No, of course not, particularly with how quickly word would spread - in her isolation, she did not know if it had yet.
Masking the choleric air that she had been draped in for the past few days, Thea kept her face entirely neutral.
Smile, and they will think you wanted all this from the beginning. Frown and they will suspect you of something, anything, and villainize further. No need to make this worse in either way. Make an appearance, make an excuse to leave. Simple as that.
It was almost too easy as she entered the room and saw Nethis and Evras in the presence of Queen Yanni. It would be quite simple to stand by Evras and leave as her sister would eventually need to do. But, seeing the monarch's expression holding fast on Nethis, Thea's footsteps slowed. For a moment, Thea hesitated to approach the Queen, playing her part in once again making the Thanasi Three. Despite the tired old rumor of 'witch' that lingered with them, it never helped for all three of them to be in one place at a time.
Yet, with so few who had arrived, it would not do to keep herself from presenting herself to the Queen. Taking a steadying breath, Thea crossed the flagstones with measured footsteps and arrived very purposefully at Evras' shoulder, meeting Nethis' eye with a neutral expression and Evras' with only the faintest pressing of her lips serving as ghost of a smile.
"Your Majesty," Thea greeted, her low voice heard but seeming to barely pass through her lips, almost reverent, her eyes fell to Zanon. It would do no good to make a show of guilt or grievance before them right now. In fact, if permitted, she would make this a brief of an interaction as possible and step aside from the center of it all. Her eyes fleeting away to try to find the least crowded part of the room as she rose from the curtsey.

Whenever his father had left for war and Vangelis had in his own turn gone scurrying off about the Grecian kingdoms, Zanon had never had trouble stepping in and filling the void as head of Kotas house in their absence. This time though it all felt different. Instead of social visits and northern skirmishes, his father and brothers were now all making their way to the same place, to face the same enemy, and for the first time since he had been injured, Zanon felt distinctly left behind. There was an underlying sort of panic that he could not get rid of, that neither of them would come back and he would be forced into the crown he'd never wanted.
Standing at his mother's right shoulder, dressed in a simple white chiton with maroon himation across his shoulders against the chilling air, he was once again wearing the gold circlet of his station, though any other ornament had been left aside. He was playing the part of silent support to the regent, let her and the others who came to visit shine, he had other things to focus on. Like the deaths that had been reported, whispers of a killer stalking the streets of the cities. It was the sort of thing Vangelis would have enjoyed throwing himself into, but even the thought of his brother left a bitter taste in his mouth at the moment.
He had adored Selene, considered her already a sister. She calmed and centered him more than he liked to admit, and he couldn't imagine anyone being a better fit for the future queen of Colchis than the blonde Taengean. It had certainly worked out in his mother's favor, and the country had been strong with the combination. Now there was another potential queen, one who carried his brother's child, or claimed to in any case. He didn't know what he was more disappointed in. That Vangelis had shared Thea's bed, or that Thea hadn't had the good sense to get rid of it. A Thanasi Kotas match had caused enough strife, to have that on the throne would only bring more pain and suffering.
The arrival of his wife and her three sisters in close succession had him narrowing his eyes, the look at his wife suggesting that he would be having words with her about leaving the bedrest her physician had ordered. With Nethis it was his usual distaste, a hint of fear in his heart that he refused to show on his face. As for Thea, normally he liked her best of all of Evras' relations, and might have offered her a smile. Instead when he looked to her, meeting her gaze as she dared to glance his way, his lips tightened in a thinly veiled disgust. Never in his life had he thought he might feel so toward her, but never before had he thought she was as conniving as her sister.
"My love, you should be resting." His voice was soft in reference to Evras, as was his expression. Since their truce he had been trying once again to think of her as an ally, allow the love he felt for her to hold sway. In an instant though his lip curled in a half snarl half smile as he pinned his gaze on Thea's attempts to escape.
"After all. Lady Thea should be presiding alongside the rest of us. As she has so obviously decided this is what she desires." A stool that had been placed for him if he needed to rest was shoved forward, and he fixed Thea with a look that said if she refused there would be consequences. "Please. Sit. We wouldn't wish my brother's child to be placed at any risk."

Yanni was not happy to see the first Thanasi woman approaching her. She didn’t like the family, especially not after recent events, and she didn’t trust them for a second. The only person in the family that Yanni might consider as sort of alright was Evras, but she didn’t fully trust any of them. The last person that she wanted to deal with was any of them, but it seemed that they were bound and determined to gather around her. Yanni had no time to answer Nethis’ question before one of the sisters she asked about approached them both. Sure they were polite enough, but she knew that none of them wanted to be there with her, and she didn’t particularly want them there either. She supposed that could be said of many people who attended court. The sessions weren’t held because the nobles and royals particularly wanted to spend time with each other, it was more an expectation than anything.
Yanni shot a look to Evras, one that showed she was not happy that the woman was here. She was supposed to be in bed, and court was hardly important enough for her to find herself on her feet once more. Yanni would see her escorted back to her room as soon as she was able to without drawing too much attention. The royal family still had an image to uphold, no one needed to know how fragile this pregnancy truly was. Yanni would have a talk with Evras later, and would have to post guards outside her room constantly if she needed to.
“Your assistance is not needed, as you have tasks of greater importance.” She said simply in reply to Evras as the woman stated she wanted to be of help. Yanni wanted her to remain in her bed, and she was sure the other woman knew that.
Yanni’s only recognition that the other two Thanasi women even existed was a simple nod, and an icy look. She clearly was not friendly towards them, especially Thea who would find herself as a new part of her family, despite Yanni’s protests. Thea would not find herself with a warm welcome in the Kotas household, especially not with Vangelis gone. She did not have time nor did she care enough to spend any time with the woman. Until she was married to Vangelis, she was not the future Queen and Yanni would not allow her to be treated as such.
Yanni greeted her son next, her facial expression softening as she saw her second son. The love she held for her children was unmatched, even if two out of four sons had now gotten a Thanasi pregnant outside of wedlock, a fact that she absolutely hated.
She made no move nor said no word as Zanon called out Thea, she didn’t quite understand his meaning behind his actions, but she was not about to question her son in front of the court. Her facial expression remained neutral, then she turned to Evras, leaning in to whisper to her.
“I will have some water fetched, but you will not stay long.” She said, as she leaned back away from her, her expression was serious and showed Evras that she meant business when she said that she would not be staying long.
Yanni motioned to a servant, and commanded a glass of water be brought for Evras.

Athanasia had not wanted to attend this court session, and had thought about excusing herself by saying she didn’t feel well. But the more she thought about it, she decided that she needed the distraction. Mingling with other women who had watched their loved ones go off to war might be just the remedy she needed for the melancholy that had settled over her the moment her father and three of her brothers set out to engage in battle with the Egyptians. There was no doubt in her mind that they would win, but she was terrified that one or more of them would not come home. She was also worried about Mihail of Thanasi, who had become her friend.
Her mind was still reeling after the supposed loss of her father and then his miraculous return. She had been so devastated when she had thought he was dead and she didn’t want to go through that again. It seemed as if her heart was always pounding wildly now and fear had wrapped its dark tentacles around her soul. The unknown was always frightening, and the young princess was beginning to realize that she was not as strong emotionally as she had thought she was.
Followed by two royal guards, Athanasia strolled around the room, a scowl contorting her pretty features. Now that she was here, she wished she had made those excuses. She didn’t really feel like socializing, and avoided groups of conversing people as she strolled around the room. In honor of her father’s wish that she be more ladylike, she was dressed like a princess tonight.
Like her mother, she was wearing Kotas red in the form of a silk chiton shot through with golden threads and banded with rows of gold beads. A gold, diamond, and ruby fibula was fastened at her right shoulder and a plain one at the left. Over it, a golden himation was draped, fastened at her left shoulder and along her arm with a fibula that matched the right. It was sprinkled with tiny iridescent beads, its asymmetrical hem bordered with them. A necklace made of golden chains and dangling diamonds and rubies glittered around her neck and matching earrings sparkled in her ears. Two gold bracelets studded with the same precious stones coiled around her bare arm, one on the upper arm and the other on her forearm. Her sandals were made of gold-dyed leather and decorated with a red beaded pattern.
Half of her hair had been artfully piled upon her head in a mass of curls and braids woven with red and gold ribbons. Perfect little ringlets framed her face. The rest of her long tresses tumbled down her back and a gold, diamond, and ruby circlet rested against her forehead.
Taking a goblet of wine from the tray of a passing servant, she noticed her mother and Zanon surrounded by Thanasi women, including Evras. She had seen little of her lately, most likely because she spent most of her time in her room resting. Babies were fragile creatures, particularly before they were born. and her sister-in-law was wise not to exert herself too much.
The young princess didn’t think she wanted children of her own. She was far too active to spend most of her time in bed. Nor did she believe she was very maternal. Then again, she was young. Her feelings might change in a few years. Eventually, she knew she would be married and her husband would wish her to provide him with heirs. That was one destiny that could not be avoided.
I should go to Mother’s rescue, she thought, understanding how the Queen felt about the Thanasi family. Approaching the small group, she smiled and curtsied to Yanni, “Greetings, Mother, Zanon, ladies.” Athanasia grinned at her brother and nodded respectfully to the Thanasi women She doubted that Mihail had told them about their budding friendship, but if he had let it slip, she hoped his sisters would be courteous enough not to mention it. She had been told in no uncertain terms to stay away from him.

Viper's Nest Event - Colchis
"Did you hear what the Prince just said? My brother's child! So it must be true. The Lady Thea really is living in the Kotas manor!"
"Just because she is with child? Please."
"No no! I heard it from one of the servants - she's staying in finest guest suite in the Kotas manor! And the blonde lady - the one from Leventi in Taengea. She's gone home! Totally left!"
"So the wedding for the crown prince is off?"
"Only as far as the Leventi girl is concerned... I thought it strange that the Thanasi was allowed into their home. They've never exactly been cosy. This explains it! She's pregnant!"

Thea had a well developed mask of a courtier, from the first moment she was welcomed to attend at the start of her adolescence. It was easier to form for her than it was for her sisters, with Nethis' expressions always seeming to gloat over knowing something others did not and Evras' expressions being soft and easy to read. The set of her features, the angle of her brows, and her innate tendency towards long, unblinking stares made it easy to hide her thoughts.
It was not a Kotas mask of stone, however, nor did she think it would ever be. Queen Yanni's gaze was a withering one, and had Thea not done her best to mentally prepare for such a thing, cracks would have formed in her veneer. If anything, given her circumstances now, a day would come when she would need to emulate the Queen's manner and set claim to the position she could find herself in for the years to come.
If it came to that. With their family's history, particularly with Evras, there was no guarantee that a child would make it into the world, even less so early on as she was only burgeoning into her third month in this condition. Though it was a fact well-acknowledged, Thea dare not say or even think it too long.
It did not stop Prince Zanon from making such a vocal point of it, his voice low and scathing as he made a minor show of bringing the stool for her to sit. Thea's jaw tightened as her teeth clenched, offering only a moment's hesitation at his order for her to sit as her gaze shifted to Queen Yanni, almost asking if it was what she wanted.
Well, of course it was not, but once again, Thea was met with a glare as sharp and cold as the ice-covered peaks in the north. Swallowing almost unnoticed, Thea took a breath and stepped toward the stool, "Yes, my Prince. Thank you."
Play nice.
It was embarrassing and demeaning, which was the point on their behalf. The secret of the years-long affair she held with Vangelis had been set loose, at least between Zanon and Evras, which explained the far more scalding tone he held towards her. Every god in the heavens above knew she did not want this, but there would be no convincing the stubborn man - Evras had faced such a struggle for years, she knew. So, if he wanted her to be placed around at his whim, like a vase moved from one shelf to another, so be it. Thea was stalwart enough not to let it show.
Her eyes flicked to Evras, who now knew the truth of the story but still held a few strands of disgust behind her own mask.
And, then there was Nethis.
Thea could hardly look at Nethis, knowing that glint in her eyes of nothing but smug satisfaction and victory, glinting in the way their father's used to when he won some victory in the Senate and proclaimed it through the Thanasi halls. Thea's issue was a golden arrow slung perfectly, hitting the bullseye in this one moment as Thea now took her seat next to the Kotas. It made her nearly sick.
Oooh...
Thea's nausea had come and gone in the passing days, fueled by the anxiety of such a shift in her life in addition to what the child caused. While there were fewer emitted moment than in the first days of finding out, the unease of her stomach could still serve her in her desire to escape what was easily one of the most uncomfortable moments of her life.
Sitting, Thea made a brief show of blinking rapidly, a loosely curled hand raising itself to her lips, as if attempting to prevent such a thing from occurring. It was then that she heard the hissed whispers and noticed the eyes drifting towards her. No, not yet. Give it a moment of time.
From her seated position, she overheard the conversation between Queen Yanni and Evras, knowing that her sister's own condition would soon see her excused. There was a slight glimmer of hope in that. If played right, then perhaps she could find her own excuse as well.
When Princess Athanasia approached, Thea found herself diverted and distracted from her own self-wallowing as an almost soft smile crossed her lips. On the night of the feast, Mihail and the princess had been standing fairly close to one another, enough so for King Tython to threaten him. With her brother gone to war, Thea found it curious the way that the Princess looked between them - not sharing the loathing looks the other Kotas offered to the sisters.
"Good evening, Princess. Your dress is lovely, and the embroidery. May I see the embroidery a bit closer?"
Yes, good. Play nice.
Thea adjusted the way she sat on the overlarge, plush stool, offering a seat to the Princess if she wished it.

She was not surprised in the least at how insistent Yanni was in ensuring she returned, and even outwardly winced when the queen's response was curt. She was a carrier of the next grandchild to the Queen, but even that could not beat the icicle-like look she shot her two sisters, one that Evras herself tried to shy away from. She thanked the Gods that her husband decided to come up next, and gave her husband a warm smile when he reminded her to be resting. She knew she should, she really did, but being cooped up in the room for so long would surely drive her mad.
"I will return soon, as I have promised Her Majesty. I merely wanted to see that everything was in order." she murmured in assurance, but took a sharp intake of breathe when her husband proceeded to outwardly lay into Thea. The sister's own relationship wasn't at it's best, for while Evras had accepted Thea's explanation, neither did she... trust. Not Thea, but Nethis. Her eldest sister's composed attitude to all that was happening was oddly disturbing to Evras, especially after the disastrous dinner the family had shared, which Evras had walked off from. She had yet to return but a handful of times since, as the physician had instructed her to be on bedrest and she's asked for Queen Yanni's help in telling her father, but she did not wish to see their father's face either.
Blanching at her husband's hard edged words to her sister, Evras took a step back to the Queen's side, and nodded silently to her instructions, merely accepting the glass of fresh water when it arrived. Fresh water wasn't in abundance in the lands, but in her condition, even watered down wine had been advised against, and so Evras allowed the cooling neutral liquid to flow down and wet her oddly dry throat as she watched the exchange, smiling again when Athanasia arrived.
The young princess was blooming into her own, and Evras had always had a soft tender spot for the girl. She returned with her own respectful nod, pleased to see the beautiful red upon the princess's figure, and made a mental note to speak with Athanasia soon to ensure all was well with her.
Evras knew all too well what Thea was facing - the exact pressure she had been under so many years ago. Zanon's parents had not been agreeable to their marriage either, viewing her as a spy or an infiltrator. But over the years, she had proven at least her silence, if not her loyalty, and had been a prime example of a good daughter -in-law, that if the Queen, while showing concern for her unborn grandchild, would still take the time to console Evras as she panicked... maybe it was a good thing. If she could tell Thea though, she'd say it was a long road ahead of her.
Her ears cocked when she heard the whispers, and after many years by the royal family's side, she knew the whispers would not do anyone well, for rumor's had a way of growing with it's own will, and if left uncontrolled, would go far worst then it would be. Frowning in worry, she extended a hand to tug at her husband to alert him to the rumors, a face of concern written over her features as she tried to catch the eye of the Queen.

If Nethis had ever managed anything that could closely resemble witchcraft, perhaps it was here in summoning both her sisters to her side—or presence at least—simply by asking after them. Funny how that worked, though it was almost a pity, considering it put her in an awkward spot.
Genuinely, she had wanted a few private moments to speak with them, a desire that had earned Evras a rare uncomplicated and genuinely fond smile upon her initial arrival, but considering they both joined what was quickly becoming a small gathering, she quickly realized that desire was going to go unfulfilled. After all, apparently in the eyes of the Queen and her sister’s husband court was no excuse to be from bed, which meant Evras’ presence was going to be fleeting and Zanon quickly trapped Thea with petty cordialities that went uncontested.
She might have pitied Thea for the position she found herself in if she hadn’t resolved to forbid sentimentality to allow her to stray off this path in the wake of punishment. There was a pang of it anyway, but she deliberately refused to acknowledge it, comfortable in the familiar emptiness that betrayed heartlessness and the hollow of ambition unsatisfied and grasping. Both prompted her to aim a fleeting and discreet but disgusted expression at Thea, knowing she would understand it for what it was and why she had earned it if she caught it.
The part of her that wanted to hurt Thea more still for daring to withhold not once but twice over, for the punishment taken for her (no matter that it had been willingly done), for the fact that the scales felt neither balanced nor weighted in her favor hoped she saw it and hoped it meant something to know that she did not even have Nethis’ support in this because right now was not a moment to do more.
The princess—very much looking the part—made a late arrival and evened their numbers, for what little good it did, assuming one could count Evras as Thanasi first and that seemed a rather big assumption considering all that had happened recently.
Distracting her from that thought for a moment, whispers shot through the silence that confirmed the truth as she wanted it believed for wider consumption and with it Nethis didn’t bother to hide the pleased uptick to her lips. It was so nice when she got what she wanted without having to do any of the work.
Still, Nethis quickly redirected herself toward more useful thoughts than now started rumors; she hadn’t had much of a chance to check in with Evras, to see where she stood and whether the manipulation she suspected might be necessary actually was. There was a gradually closing window for such a working, so if it needed doing, she needed to know.
As such, she simply glanced toward Evras and softly said, "If you are to retire early to rest, perhaps you would like company for a little while since your husband is otherwise occupied here?" Here she smiled again, this time letting it reflect a false sort of sadness though no part of it reached her eyes; the gaze she pinned Evras with was something colder, something that betrayed how she knew she was trapping Evras with false emotion as she added, "I miss you, we need to catch up."
Make no mistake, she was careful to make it sound like mere sentiment given outside observers, but it was more demand than that. Nethis wanted a read on where Evras stood now given recent happenings and she was not eager to be denied the opportunity to gain it. If being wholly ignored other than in a disgusted look, if being excluded from any expressed emotion false or otherwise hurt Thea too, then so much the better. After all, how often was Nethis even falsely sentimental?

Imeeya had convinced her to come to court. It was important with most the men off at war now. She might have fought her a little more on it, but given Imeeya’s recent mood, she hadn’t dared argue. Going would make her sister happy, and that was more important than the fact that attending court was akin to standing in a fire in Essa’s opinion. A slow, uncomfortable, endless torture.
Nonetheless, she had taken the time to make herself presentable. Her dark hair had been braided and twisted into an intricate design, with the under layers left to fall mostly free in loose waves. Jeweled pins adorned her head, sparkling as they caught the light. She had chosen a pale blue the color of a rainy sky for her peplos, worn over crisp ivory chiton. A silver filigreed bracelet adorned her arm and she wore a silver pendant with a large pale blue stone. Her silver belt had matching stones set at its center. She was the image of loveliness, but relaxed in muted tones that didn’t draw the eye so easily.
Her sister had naturally seen someone she just had to speak to within moments of entering, leaving Essa to her own devices. Her instinct - as always - was to head to the fringes of the crowd, perhaps an isolated corner to hide in. But she couldn’t ignore common courtesy. She would have time to stand to the side after she greeted her Aunt and cousins.
Reluctant though she may be, she was never rude or uncouth.
She adored her family. Knowing they’d likely be in attendance was the one reassurance she had about attending Court at all. With half of the nobility gone though, she didn’t expect her cousins to have time to entertain her.
As she approached the Queen, she caught sight of the three women who stood there, dread creeping through her. She was far too loyal to both the Drakos and Kotas bloodlines to have much affection for the Thanasi. She didn’t know all the details, but she knew enough to know that Thea had been living in the manor and Selene had fled Colchis entirely. The two events had to be connected - it was only logical.
Yet the words she overheard Zanon say had her fighting the urge to open her mouth in shock. Could she truly be carrying Vangelis’s child? No wonder his betrothed had left. Her heart ached for the poor woman. She had always liked Selene and she had seemed every bit a future Queen. Essa managed to keep her composure even as this revelation crashed through her. She made the choice to try and avoid the conflict that was clearly brewing, hastily turning on her heel with the intent to return later.
She could only pray that no one had noticed her yet.

Yanni was happy to see her daughter enter, even if her facial expression seemed sour. They needed to stand strong, the Kotas family that remained on the shore of Greece. They could not let their fear and sorrow show, not in front of anyone. They were stone, as they had always been. A strong and proud family, with no weak points. All of her children had been raised to not let their pain show, as she had done for the last thirty six years. Watching her husband and eventually her sons continuously march to war had gotten to her, but she had never once let the people of Colchis see that. This time had been worse than the others, but she kept her poise despite it.
“Athanasia.” She greeted her daughter with a small nod and a smile. She looked absolutely beautiful, and Yanni knew some day she would make a fantastic wife, hopefully to a man who would make her as happy as Tython had made her over the years. She knew that her daughter didn’t enjoy dressing up and coming to court as a lot of women did, but she was thankful that she knew well enough to do it anyways. She looked everything like the majestic princess she should look like.
Yanni heard the whispers and chose to ignore them. The news would get out sooner or later, they could not hide it when the woman began to show and the baby was born. As much as Yanni would love to lock her up in the dungeons and never see her again, to have herself and her family move on from the woman, she knew that was not possible.
She caught Evras’ look at her, and could draw assumption it was in reference to the whispers. Yanni gave her another look of her own. One that said ‘Don’t say a word.’
The Queen had no plans of either confirming nor denying the rumours that swirled. She still held hope that perhaps something would happen and she could rid the second Thanasi woman from her household before long.
Yanni didn’t like the way that Nethis was looking at Evras, not catching all of her words, the look in her eyes was enough to set a warning off in the Queen’s head. She trusted Nethis the least out of the three Thanasi women who stood there with her and her family.
“Evras.” She said, turning back to the woman, cutting into what ever her sister had been quietly speaking to her about.
“Allow me to offer my personal guard to escort you back to your chambers shortly. They will ensure no one bothers you, as you need your rest.” She said, putting emphasis on the no one in that sentence. She wasn’t sure that Nethis was trying to weasel her way into the Kotas house, but she was not going to allow it. She doubted Nethis would question or call out the Queen in the middle of court of all places. She was more cunning than that, she knew how it would look if she were to challenge her in front of all these people.

There was a harsh edge to the second prince's smile, making it clear to those who knew him best that there was little love or humor held towards Thea. As much as she had previously been the most tolerable of his wife's siblings, she was now an enemy at the level of Nethis and Dionysios themselves. She hadn't needed to tell Vangelis the child was his, hadn't needed to keep it at all, she was skilled enough with herbs that surely if she had wanted to be rid of it and not take advantage of his brother's position and final days of being unwed, she could have done. No, the fact that she sat in the chair with little complaint and made a show of seeming somewhat ill proved to him that this was something that had been done with intent.
Smiling more truly at his sister's arrival, he gave a threatening squeeze to Thea's shoulder, she was to stay put and in the place he'd given her. There would be none of the consorting with Nethis or others, only remaining where those he trusted most could watch her carefully. Zanon left his place to kiss his sister's cheek, taking her hand to guide her closer to their mother and his own wife until the addition of Essa appeared.
"Essa, come keep company with us. Where is your sister? I would speak with her."
He beckoned for his young cousin to join the family, stacking the numbers of those with Kotas influence to keep around and drown out the presence of the snakes. If he had his way he would remove Nethis from the gathering entirely, and at her soft request to speak with Evras and accompany her back to her room he bristled. A snarl that was not well hidden twisted his lips but he was beaten to response by his mother, the queen's firm statement that Evras was to retire alone turning snarl into grim smile. He had given orders that under no circumstance was Nethis or any of the Thanasi family - or anyone in fact - was to be allowed on Kotas grounds, without a Kotas guard as their watcher. Now that Thea had chosen to claim her stolen place he would allow no further conspiring between them all outside of the gaze of his own militia or servants.
"Come, Evras. Her Majesty can manage without me for a moment, I'll be sure to deliver you to her guard."
Zanon crossed now in front of his sister-in-law, breaking any gaze the she-snake might have held with his wife as if afraid that the older woman could hypnotize his wife. He placed a hand gently at Evras' waist, a kiss to her temples in as affectionate a display as they had yet presented to the court since their reunion. Obviously given the swell of her stomach, things between them had been repaired, but this was a moment to show his trust of her, the love he felt. Everyone who was watching could now know that the prince and princess were well reunited and strong, and Nethis could eat the rage until it boiled her from within.
