Despite their heated conversation a few nights ago, Evras and Zanon weren't entirely on bad terms. Sure, they had plenty of things to discuss about, and husband and wife occasionally took up separate bedchambers, but unlike those years they spent apart, Evras now selectively took to sleeping in her former bedchambers ever since her pregnancy progressed to the fourth, and now nearing fifth month.
The child within her now turned restless on occasion, and picked the most inopportune times to wake their mother, and with how busy Zanon was, Evras didn't wish to disturb her husband when he did get a chance to take some rest. So despite the rumors that flew in the servant's mill, she simply chose to sleep elsewhere to preserve his rest when she had to toss and turn in the middle of the night. She usually retired early due to the weariness of the pregnancy, and was already abed not too long after the evening mealtime in her sheer white sleeping chiton.
Pretty used to being woken up by the child in her abdomen by now, when she finally was wakened, Evras assumed that would be the case again, her hands immediately fluttering down to her stomach to soothe the restless, unborn child - only to feel a set of hands in her sleepy haze. The woman groaned, twisting as quick as she could with her swollen belly to find out who. Her body tensed for a moment, ready to scream or kick if it was some miscreant, but she relaxed the moment she realized who it was.
Briefly, Evras started to smile, but paused when she finally saw her husband's tear-stained face through the haze of her sleep-worn eyes. Hurriedly, Evras sat up, rubbing her eyes to rid the sleep of them, before gazing upon her husband in concern. Her hands brushed his damp cheeks, a frown marring her brows as she asked in a hushed tone. "What's the matter Zanon? Has something happened?" The normal questions for when you saw someone crying after dark, but more so when Evras rarely saw the display of such emotions from her husband, who was more often then not angry as opposed to sad. A sudden grip of panic caught her heart, and her grip tightened as her eyes ran over his form. "Did someone injure you? Or Dion?"

A sudden grip of panic caught her heart, and her grip tightened as her eyes ran over his form. "Did someone injure you? Or Dion?"
When he felt Evras stir, Zanon did his best to measure his breathing and keep calm, trying to let her fall back asleep and keep resting safely and blissfully. It was of no use as she turned to him, the tears that were so unusual causing her alarm in spite of his attempts. Shaking his head as she sat up, he tried to keep her laying down, determined to keep her at rest until her hands brushed over his cheeks and his eyes closed once more. He had nothing else to weep, shifting to lay his head in her lap as he used to so often when they were younger.
There was nothing more comforting than when they had been younger, carefree enough to sit anywhere, him with his head in her lap, her stroking his hair, feelings of peace and content for them both. Even with the swell of her belly it was immediately soothing, and he pressed a kiss to her stomach as he wrapped his arms around her hips. He would have been content with silence, but her question had him sighing, shaking his head once more as he took another deep breath to prepare them both for what he had to say.
"I hit Vangelis."
Lifting the offending fist so she could see the damage done, he knew in the light of day the knuckles would be bruised, and he was fortunate that his brother had offered no blows in return. He allowed her a moment to process the news, that he who had been nothing but Vang's most constant supporter had seen fit to do him harm, and he anticipated the next question.
"He is breaking his engagement with Selene. Because Thea is pregnant. He said they had been bedding together for eight years."
Eight years, it still baffled and shocked him beyond belief. Certainly he had found company outside of his marriage bed, but all of those occasions had been for one night or a month at the most, never had he met anyone aside from Evras who he could have considered sharing so much with. Why hadn't Vangelis just married her back then? Why drag Selene and the families through this mess when it all could have been solved. Was it possible his brother was simply incapable of love? It was the only thing Zanon could come up with that helped make this situation even remotely understandable.

Shifting a little so she could sit and properly look at Zanon laying on her lap and not feel like her belly is being squished at the same time, her eyes widened when the man finally admitted to what he had done with a shaky breath, with the bruised knuckle as proof. For a moment, Evras thought that was the end of it, and was at a loss for words. Vangelis and Zanon had always been close as brothers, and aside from Vangelis occasionally raising his tone at Zanon when her husband was being silly (their huge argument in front of Dion came to mind), she had never seen the brothers getting in an actual fight. She assumed they got all of that out of their system as children.
But if she had thought she was flabbergasted, the next incoming news floored her.
While a part of Evras was glad that his current state had nothing to do with injury on either his body or their son's, the fact that it was her own sister that has caused a break in an engagement with the intended of the crown prince completely blew Evras away, as she tried to process the words. Eight years? That was... almost as long as they were married. Dion was eleven, so it was give or take a few years.
Eight years?!
Looking for all the world like a gaping goldfish, Evras blinked rapidly, clearly having not heard the news before. What did one say? That was her sister, and his brother. Her brother-in-law, a guy she's looked up to and respected with a healthy dose of fear. Sleeping with Thea? How had Thea kept this from her for years? What was she thinking? What did she want? Was it Nethis's machinations too? Was Thea as power hungry as the rest of her family? Has Evras trusted her wrongly?
The silence stretched for a long time, Evras unable to find her voice to overcome her surprise, as she took a deep breathe, and then another, her hands frozen in the act of combing them through her husband's hair. Letting the long locks loose, she worried at her sheer night shift, and then shifted a gaze to Zanon. "I... I didn't know." she murmured, her voice sounding breathless as she tried to grasp the situation. "Does that mean he's... marrying my sister? But that's..." Evras trailed off, but the slight disgust in her face was enough to tell Zanon what his wife was feeling.
That was her sister. What was she going to tell Dion about Aunt Thea's child?

That was her sister. What was she going to tell Dion about Aunt Thea's child?
He couldn't bring himself to watch her expression change as the realization dawned on her, couldn't see the tidal wave of pain, shock, betrayal, and anger he had felt mirrored on her own. They had both been fools for not noticing before, though were they really? The two people he felt they both trusted most had been lying to them for almost a decade without any sort of consideration. Neither Thea nor Vangelis had appeared to have given a thought to how their relationship might affect their families, and they were all going to pay the price for it now.
How could he tell her that what he feared most now was her sister? The woman he had taken a liking to and shared a laugh with had been lying to him and now had shed her false skin and shown her true self. He ought to have known, Nethis and Thea were one and the same after all, one of them had simply fooled him longer. Now Thea would be queen, and a Thanasi would reign, her children would reign. And the fangs that had sunk into the family would deepen until the poison filled their veins.
When Evras finally spoke he pulled himself away from the comforting warmth of her skin enough to look up at her, grimacing to see that as he had thought the shock was equal to her. It wouldn't be possible to lie with such pure distaste on her face, and he had promised to be better. To believe her.
"He didn't say. But it sounds as if Selene will be sent back to Taengea, which would lead one to assume.." As her words trailed off as well, Zanon pulled himself upright, settling beside her and wrapping his arms around her tight to draw her close to his chest. All he wanted to do was hold her tight and wake in the morning with this a horrible nightmare that could be forgotten, but the danger had become more real than ever.
"Evras, you should go to Oreboa. It will be safer there with people loyal to me, to us. Don't eat or drink anything without a taster having it first. With Thea as Vangelis' wife and the mother of his heirs, we aren't needed anymore for your sister's plans. And Dion...he should go with you, but he's due to go to the mines..oh gods."
Zanon held tighter as he closed his eyes, terrified now of the thought of his only son down in the mines, of how easily any death could look like an accident. Whatever child Thea bore, if Vangelis came back they could always have another and his son could be considered a rival with the exact same bloodlines in his veins. They could try to get rid of him too. The one thing Zanon had always counted on keeping Dion safe was no longer unique, it could no longer guarantee his safety.

Would it have made any difference had Thea told her before? Evras would've likely questioned her too, wondered why her sister did so, and tried to talk Thea out of it. Considering it went on for so many years, was there emotion involved? Was that why Thea had withheld such information from her? A million and one questions swam through her head, all with no one to provide her answers at this hour of the night. Would it even make sense for her to go and visit Thea alone?
Gulping when her husband gathered her in his arms, her gaze dropped to the bed upon which they sat on, still speechless with such information practically thrown in her face. Did her father know? Was Nethis involved? But if Selene is to be sent back to Taengea - oh the poor woman, she looked so happy to be engaged to the crown prince too! They had brief conversations, but enough for Evras to know the kindness of the blonde Taengea. While Evras deemed her still a little soft around the edges to survive in the harsh Colchian climate, she had no doubt she would adapt, especially considering the current Queen herself had been a Taengean born herself. She couldn't imagine the anguish she must have been feeling.
If the pregnancy was showing now, it must mean the deed had been done just a couple of months ago, and doing quick calculations in her head was enough for Evras to conclude that the timelines of both Thea and Selene overlapped. And Evras was a well-worn expert at the feelings one felt when one's husband - or in this case intended - dallied with another woman. Now it was made all the worst for a proof came in the form of a child - the poor child would be born under the worst of circumstances.
Zanon's suddenly quick and slightly terrified tone made the woman's blue-green eyes flicker to her husband, and her hand quickly sought his to give it a squeeze to try and calm him, knowing how prone Zanon was to get panicked when it involved the safety and wellbeing of both herself and Dion. But what Zanon said was true - after the last dinner she's had with her father, wher the man outwardly called her a traitor and spineless, she was no longer sure if she even trusted him and her eldest sister.
Yet, her husband's words held truth.
But she could not leave him, not yet and not now. "And what about yourself, love? I will not leave you now. Your brothers and parents are due to leave, and I cannot be absent for that." she said in a soothing tone, trying to imbue logic into his scrambled mind. Picking up his hand, she laid it upon the swell of her stomach, the warmth clear to feel over the thin sheer she wore, and smiled as she felt the babe move in response to their father's touch. "I will allow for the taster, and I am not to leave the manor under your mother's order's anyway. I won't go anywhere without you - but I can't leave you now, and there is nowhere safer then here with you for now, since I'm sure Queen Yanni has told you what the physician has prescribed me." she murmured, thinking of the visit from the old physician,a nd how he's put her strictly on bedrest. How was she supposed to make the journey to Oroboea, if she wasn't even allowed to walk the distance of the Kotas manor? "After the babe is born, I will go. Because if I'm in Oroboea, they could get to neither of us. But for now.... I'm safe, if you're here. Let Dion go to the mines, as he should. But send him to one with your trusted men - let them suspect nothing." she pulled her hand away from his, and cupped the side of his cheeks with a soft, encouraging smile. "It would do no good to allow other's to think we're afraid. We're of Kotas name, are we not?"

She spoke reason, as she always did. Evras had been a constant source of logic and support and he had been nothing but cruel and terrible to her in the past few years. That would change, his efforts would double, he needed her now more than ever and whatever happened he wouldn't let go. Taking a deep breath as she lifted his hand to her belly he smiled at the feeling of the baby within. It had been so long since he'd felt that, the hope of a new life. This was close to the furthest they'd gotten since Dion, and as he bent down to press a kiss to the child within, he sent up a prayer to Hera that she would keep them all safe.
Zanon nodded as she acquiesced, relief filtering through his limbs. As long as there was a taster, and she stayed close, they would be able to keep her safe, though he still would have preferred knowing that she was in the safety of Oreboa. The babe within gave a kick and distracted him for a moment, a genuine smile spreading over his lips as he pressed his other hand against her stomach as well.
"Very well. So long as you're both safe. I will arrange for one of my men to accompany Dion and make sure that he is secure. Six months will hopefully go by quickly enough, though he should be here to meet his sibling."
It was the first he'd spoken about the possibility of the baby living, making it long enough to become a little infant that might giggle and coo and bring joy to their lives once again. Dion would be a fantastic brother, he had been sweet to the little princess Tisiphone and the other babes he'd met, and the country needed this. They needed the promise of new life and the joy of a royal birth again. It had been far too long. And now it would be more than one in a year.
His scowl returned at the thought of Vangelis and Thea's child. If it was born before his brother came back, they would be expected to try to claim it. His mother would no doubt make that request, whether or not he thought it wise, but given the choice Zanon would wait until his brother returned and let the man claim his own bastard. He had no guarantees given Thea's promiscuous reputation that it was even his brother's child, and he would make no claim on something that came from a lie on a viper's tongue.
"Yes. We are Kotas. I don't want you or Dion going to the Thanasi houses. And none but Thea are to be permitted inside our home. None of them, Evras. For the safety of our children."

While Evras always strived to maintain a calm, level head when it came to conversations with her husband, Zanon was prone to flares of temper that even Evras could not speak reason to, especially if the subject of the matter was her he was angry yet. Somehow though, luck smiled down upon her that night, or she was simply using the correct words, but it seemed as if her spouse was willingly listening her for once. The woman smiled softly as he agreed to her suggestion. While she saw logic as to why Zanon wished to send her to Oroboea, she was unwilling to go through such a long carriage ride when she alread precariously held on to the child she now carried within her.
"And we will ensure he is here to meet his sibling, as will you." she murmured. A sudden warmth filled her chest, as the fact that she may finally welcome a second child in her life finally began to take root and solidify in her mind. It had seemed almost like a dream that she was now close to being in her fifth month of pregnancy, a stage she hadn't reached ever since she had carried Dion. Her last few pregnancies never lasted past the first trimester, and each time the child kicked inside of her, Evras cherished each feeling. She had felt affection when watching Dion play with the visiting Taengean princess, and somehow knew he would be a fantastic elder brother when given the chance.
A look of momentary sadness passed her features when Zanon mentioned for her to no longer go to her childhood home. Not that Evras wished to go any longer, but the last memory of her being there still saddened her. It was never a nice feeling, but Evras was finally coming to terms that perhaps she had a tyrant of a father who cared little to whether she lived or died, as long as she played her part in guaranteeing their family name on the throne. She loved her siblings, but was her father's tyranny worst the risk she would put her children to, especially if it were to continue? In his less lucid moments, Dionysios had been gentle and even loving to his grandson, but now Evras feared even letting him see his grandfather.
Zanon didn't need to know all of it at the moment though. Plus, since he and the Queen has both said so, she'd like to see how her father can try and get her to go over when they had expressly said she was to not leave the Kotas manor. So instead, Evras merely nodded in agreement, taking his hand and giving it a tight squeeze, before motioning for them to go back to bed. "Sleep, husband. You've lost too much of it already. It's going to be a long next few days afterall."

Both of his hands now rested on Evras' stomach, longing for the child within to give another sign of life and smiling with relief when it finally did. Their baby was alive, five months in and only four to go, and perhaps he would finally have the start of the family he had desired for his whole life. It was foolish perhaps to ask so much, but Evras was still young and healthy, and he at least was young and mostly healthy, especially with the benefits he had been seeing from Ariah's treatment of his leg.
He was able to walk more often now without the use of a cane, a limp still present but at least capable of moving on his own without misery. With the return of his strength he had been beginning to feel more optimistic about being able to survive and even thrive no matter what threat came their way. But now there was someone on the inside, someone who threatened them even further and could give more access and information away than would ever be acceptable.
"We will be sure of it. Our child will be the most celebrated babe in Colchis." The prince leaned in to press yet another kiss to her stomach, resting his forehead there for a moment as she reminded him that he ought to sleep. Guilt twinged through him as he realized that not only should he sleep, but he was keeping her from her rest as well. He should have returned to his own room, let her have her own rest and not worry about waking him at all, but he found he did not want to let go, wanted to be with her as much as he could to make sure she was safe.
With a nod, he shifted back and after a moment's hesitation stripped off the chiton he'd worn, laying bare beside her with no expectation save for her curling up in his arms. Drawing the blankets over them, he held her close and caressed her cheek, kissing her softly and closing his eyes.
"I will keep you safe. I promise."
