Time was a funny thing. Marietta firmly believed that with time came experience. Time was the root of all changes. Who she was even five minutes ago was not who she was now. And yet, with one small little thing time stopped- no reversed. With one tiny letter, Marietta was no longer 21. The paper she held transported her back nine years to a happier, more innocent time. The letter brought a brilliant smile to her face and caused her heart to race out of her pure excitement.
This missive was from a childhood friend, one that she had not seen for years. (Nine years, to be very specific.) Adrestus of Nikolaos was finally coming home, and Marietta could not be more excited. Nine years was a long time. People could change, Marietta certainly did. Her body has become more womanly. Her curves were now pronounced, her breast full and plump. Marietta’s rounder face in childhood has slimmed, and the small girl was now a tall, proud woman. While she may have changed physically, mentally she was very similar. Marietta still struggled to speak. She was shy, she was quiet, and she feared conflict. Though Marietta has seen improvements in the years, now able to stand up to herself when the moment called for it, she was still as innocent and naïve as before.
Would he recognized her? Marietta could not help but question this as she got ready the morning of his arrival. Would she recognize him? Her fingers twisted her hair into braids, pinning most of it up but one long strand that fell from the bun to her right shoulder. She adorned that braid with jewels, carefully placing each jewel equidistance apart so that it would be a symmetrical art piece all the way up the braid. She wore a white dress with a light blue sash. A simple silver arm band complimented her lithe arm.
Once she was ready, Marietta made sure to gather some slaves and made her way to the docks. The whole time she was bubbling with nerves. Could their friendship last the test of time? Marietta and Adre were quite close before he left Athenia. He was no Elias to Marietta, that level of friendship was hard to match, yet Marietta still found one of her fondest memories being moments spent with Adre.
She ran over to the docks, looking out to the ocean and squinting at the arriving ships. She leaned forward on the rail and used her hand to block the sun’s harsh rays on this bright day. The ocean wind gently brushed past her, kissing her skin softly, causing bumps to rise. Her grey eyes scanned all the boats, desperately looking for her friend.
Then she saw a man. Much taller than the young man she had pictured in her head. In fact this man that she saw caused her hesitation. Was this him? How would she know? And yet, there were enough similarities that it gave Marietta the rare amount of confidence to yell, “Adre!” from the docks. “Adre, is that you?”

Home. It wasn’t like anything he had ever experienced, even after traveling around the world. He had grown up in Athenia, and all his family and old friends were there. Of course, many of the people who he once knew didn’t know he was coming back- and coming back long enough to see them. Yes, he had been in Athenia before, but, not for very long and not long enough to reconnect and rekindle old connections. There were several people who hadn’t even seen him for years, including childhood friends like Elias, Ismene and even Marietta of Atonis. But, he finally had the time. He was coming back, for his father was getting older, and Adrestus knew deep down that he should really start thinking about the future. It was terrifying, but he had to at least try.
His family didn’t know he was coming, nor did his old friends. Some, like the people who he had contracts did, but Adrestus overall kept it a secret. A surprise, in more detailed terms. However, he did tell someone who he knew would most definitely keep a secret, and it was just his nature to want at least someone to be there to greet him. Adrestus swung his head back from the bow of the ship and yelled orders to his crew. Tighten the ropes, bring down the sails…. They would be docking soon. Athenia’s docks were familiar ones, as he had learned them as a child, but he just felt butterflies whenever he got to tie his ship to port every time he arrived home. It just gave him a sense of comfort. Adrestus quickly rushed from his station and towards the exit of the ship, helping his crew get ready to enter the land. He hadn’t been on land in a couple of weeks, and he couldn’t wait to have something solid underneath his feet. There was a voice calling in the distance, and Adrestus narrowed his eyes as he peered for the source of it.
There, he saw a woman… he barely recognized her. Adrestus beamed a smile over at her, leaning on the ship's railing to wave at her. “Hey!” He called, too far away to really have a conversation yet. They barely finished putting the stairs from the ship to the dock before the sailor jumped from his ship to solid ground. “Marietta!” Adretus’s voice was full of excitement as he quickly rushed over to the woman who he had been a friend with as a child. It had been… years since he had seen her in person. Adrestus, fully decked in his sailing uniform, stood before Marrietta and looked her over.
“Well…. You are beautiful, just as you always were.” He was still taller than her, but she had surely grown into herself. “Don’t tell me you didn’t recognize me, Marietta.” He gave a laugh, before smoothing his hair out as he realized salty water from the ocean was still in it. The waves that day had been strong, and he had had to work hard to get here. It had been worth it, of course. “Did you miss me?” Adrestus gave her a playful smirk, before cocking his head to the side. “No one knows of this yet, yes?” He was sure she hadn’t told a soul. Hence why he had trusted her with it in the first place. “I hope I can surprise my family, I’m sure they’ve been worried.”

The smile on Marietta’s face could not have been larger when the boy, no the man, waved to her from the ship. Grey eyes were sparkling with excitement when she saw Adre from the ship inaudibly shouting. She giggled and hurried from where she was at the docks, moving closer to where they were placing stairs.
Marietta did not have to wait long for her friend to jump down and see her. Marietta was just as fast. Before she knew it all proprietary went out the window. The young woman threw herself into a hug, arms wrapping around his neck as she did. She probably looked ridiculous, like a young, newly wedded wife welcoming their husband back from war. But Marietta didn’t care, not this time. Since receiving Adre’s letter she counted down the days until he would dock. She was practically bursting from anticipation, struggling to keep her lips tight. Marietta wanted to celebrate. It was nine years, nine whole years, they had been apart and she was sure so much had happened. Marietta couldn’t wait to hear his stories of the sea, a place she could only dream of.
And then he opened his mouth.
Suddenly she dropped the hug and stepped back. Blushing was very common for Marietta. Some would argue that to her, blushing was as common as breathing. Yet, she wasn’t used to compliments, not of her appearance, and so the redness in her face was brighter than it was typically. “Adre!” She swatted his shoulder just like when they were children. “Don’t say things you don’t mean!”
Already with the nagging. She was picking up right where they left off, although to be fair… Marietta was much worse with it than she was before.
Now that he was up close she had the opportunity to truly look at him. The years treated him very well. Adrestus never looked bad, but they were both so young. He was twelve, she was ten, and both still hadn’t grown into their shape. “Of course I recognized you!” She lied. “I called your name out, did I not?”
“It’s just…” Marietta hesitated. Grey eyes slowly examined him, trailing down then back up his body. “You grew muscles.” Marietta wasn’t exactly surrounded by weak, lanky men. But the men she saw were typically of the military. There was something about Adrestus that was slightly different from them. Perhaps working a ship trained your body in different areas. It was unique, and gave Adre an extra sort of… ruggedness that Marietta so admired in other men before. Not that she was admiring her friend, of course, just noting an obvious fact.
“I don’t know Adre. Did I miss you?” She teased, her beam still as bright as the afternoon sun in the sky. “I only came here because I had forgotten who it was that sent the letter.” Marietta would never give any of her friends the satisfaction of being missed, even if it were true. There was something about nobility that tended to bring ego, and she didn’t want to be the one to inflate it. “And of course I told no one. I am no gossip. Though,” she paused, “Why don’t you stop at my home for a bit before leaving for your’s? I’m sure you must be hungry after sailing for so long.” And Marietta was far too selfish to let her friend go that quickly.

He smiled over at Marietta as she hailed him over, and as he landed his eyes widened with surprise as she rushed at him, and he felt as though he almost fell over. He balanced himself as Marietta gripped his neck, and with a smile he returned her hug, wrapping his arms around her and holding her tight. He rested his head onto his friend’s shoulder, enjoying the moment, before complimenting her. He knew that it would make her blush, but he wasn’t expecting her to get so red. As she pulled away from the playfulness in his eyes became more noticeable, and the sailor burst out laughing. He tried to avoid her swat but she was too fast, and feeling her hand just made him laugh even harder.
“When have I ever lied to you! Just look at you! Your eyes are the brightest stars I’ve ever seen!” He spoke again, and Adrestus shook his head once more. “Well, you recognized me, but did you recognize me?” He asked, before chuckling at her muscle comment. “Oh, so you would like to see more of them I hear?” He gave her a smirk, and with a quick glimpse left to right, he quickly moved his clothes to reveal his torso, showing all of his muscles right in front of the noblewoman. He was flirting, and playing with her at the same time. It was fun. He winked over at her as he covered himself once more, before letting out yet another laugh.
“Oh come on, Marietta.” Adrestus playfully gave her a whine, as she didn’t give him the satisfaction that he was craving. He had always felt like he had craved her attention from when they had met as kids, but she was always busy with something else. Their lives had never exactly intertwined the same way, and them not seeing each other for 9 years was proof of that. “Ah, the letter, of course. Well, it was a very important one, I’m glad that it hadn’t gotten lost.” He commented, before moving closer to her. He knew she had kept it a secret, and his expression showed his approval when she confirmed it. It was good news. “Thank you,” He spoke, before thinking for a moment. “I would love to rest, that sounds just fine. It’s been a hard day’s work. Plus we have some catching up to do” Adrestus confessed before looking off back towards his ship.
“Mind if you send some slaves to help organize my ship? I hate to bother, but... I cant take my stuff to my home just yet and I won’t be able to rest much if I am still thinking about my ship being a mess.” His crew could certainly do it, but he’d hate to have them work more after what they have already been through. And he was sure Marietta would be kind enough to help.

She didn’t know it was possible. Marietta had experienced a wide array of blushes in her lifetime. A simple conversation with a stranger could bring one on, or a met gaze from across the room. But never did a blush envelop her entire body just like this. She felt heat everywhere when Adre moved his clothes to reveal his abs. Hestia would raise a brow at the heat radiating from Marietta’s body for it rivaled that of her own hearth.
Hic. The sound was small at first, but a second quickly followed bursting from Marietta’s lips. Hiccup!
With the hiccups came the swats. Not just one, but two, even three landed in quick succession upon Adre’s shoulder before lowering to his arms in an attempt to tug them down. Marietta’s eyes looked left and right as well, should someone else have caught such a display. “Lord Adrest-hic-us!” Marietta’s eyes were wide, pleading even. “You’ve been home all of a few moments and you’re already looking to cause a scene? Has nine years not aged you at all?”
Marietta dropped her hands and turned her back to him. She fanned her face quickly, trying to regain her composure. All this time, and Adre was still the same Adre. Marietta could not blame him, she was still very similar as well. And yet… all the same Marietta loathed that he knew exactly how to rile her up.
She turned back around, blush finally fading and hiccups subsiding at least somewhat. Her heart, however, was beating faster than a horse’s gallop. She had half the mind to tell Adrestus to go back on his ship and come back in another nine years would it not be that Marietta missed him so terribly. She had regretted the times that she had not been able to spend with Adrestus as they were children. Between lessons, her own creative passions, keeping her sisters in line, and chasing after Elias and Sofia, she had barely the time to spend with Adrestus. And yet every memory they did have together was one that Marietta cherished always.
“My sla- Oh, yes. Of course.” Marietta snapped towards them, beckoning them towards her. She tilted her chin towards the ship. Marietta barely looked at them as she issued her order. Her eyes were just on Adrestus.
So much had changed, and yet… now that he was closer she could see the child that she had once known. The smile remained, still as playful and mischievous as before. His eyes held an adventurer’s spirit, and yet unlike in the past now they had experience. What did that experience come with? Love? Heartache? Pain? Joy? Marietta’s eyes would look no different than when she was twelve. The only adventures she had were in her dreams and paintings, or in the stories she read throughout the years. Adrestus was fortunate to live a life of real worth, real moments, only to return to a life that would be luxurious.
“Now tell me,” Marietta moved now to his side so they could walk together. “What tales has the sea offered the great Lord Adrestus of Nikolaos?”

“Now tell me,” Marietta moved now to his side so they could walk together. “What tales has the sea offered the great Lord Adrestus of Nikolaos?”
Seeing the red peek out from beneath her skin, Adrestus’s smile grew wider. Even after not seeing Marietta for a long time, she was still incredibly beautiful. It just made him want to embarrass her even more, just to see her horror. Her comment about his body changes made him feel pride, and he couldn’t help himself but to play with her. She had to want to see more, didn’t she? He flashed his abs at her, pulling his clothes so that she had a full view of his torso. He didn’t really give a damn if it caused a scene because her reaction was worth it. And then the most beautiful sound entered his ears, and it was just like old times. “Oh, darling,” Adrestus laughed harder, and he let her force his arms down so that his abs would be covered once more. “Marietta, are you saying that you didn’t want to see them? You could have just said so,” Adrestus teased, knowing full well that he was being a bit immature. It didn’t stop him though and being around Marietta just made his heart grow fuller. His life was just… happier around her. It didn’t help that her reactions were so cute to the sailor.
He chuckled as she turned her back from him and Adre shook his head. He made himself more presentable, and he peered over at her. “I can’t tell you how much I’ve missed you, Marietta.” He confessed, letting out a quiet breath of a sigh. As children, he had enjoyed their friendship, and while they hadn’t been as close as perhaps some people were, he always seemed to have fun around her. Even if she didn’t exactly approve of his fun. He knew her reactions, and while she was predictable… every time it gave him happiness. Her attention was… intoxicating to say the least. He smiled as she agreed to help him clean the ship up and his body language relaxed more. Since he didn’t want to go to his home just yet, at least he could get his ship cleaned. He would have to get his stuff off the ship later. For now… he time to spend with Marietta, and that was what was important.
They had so much to catch up on, Adrestus didn’t know where to start. Adretsus let Marietta take the lead, and he started to walk with her. He was glad she had invited him over, as this meant he could relax before surprising everyone with his announcement of his official arrival. Adrestus flickered his eyes as Lady Marietta walked at his side, and gave her a grin. “It’s been a hard days work, and you’re already asking me to give you all my tales? I would think a Lady of your stature would be more patient.” Adrestus teased, before moving closer to her. “I have so much to tell you about, my friend.” He gave her a bright smile, still walking. “Including, and this is true… I’m the most handsome sailor to sail the seas. Who knew, right?” Adrestus was now flirting, but he couldn’t help himself. 9 years had passed, but he felt now that they were going to pick up right where they had left off from. “What have you been up to?”

He missed her. Marietta felt her heart give a little squeeze. Truth be told, she was surprised to have received that letter. She saw herself as fairly forgettable. She was the daughter that was in her eldest sister’s shadow. She wasn’t as beautiful as Evi, and her memory was not a fraction that was Hebe’s. All she had was her art, and that was more of a solitary passion that very few really saw. And yet, it was Marietta who was told ahead of time that Adre was returning. It was Marietta who was missed.
Why did that make her nervous? She felt her stomach bubble. Being told she was missed was more of a compliment than when he spoke of her beauty. Marietta did not often believe any compliments given on her appearance, especially when she compares herself to her sisters. She found it more polite than honest. But to be missed? Who would say that if it were not true? Actions spoke much louder than words, and Adre’s actions were practically shouting in Marietta’s ears. She saw no one else at the docks on this day, despite knowing Adre had other friends or family he could contact. Marietta’s head tilted to one side as she looked at Adre. The smile was smaller than before, shier, but just as genuine. Her teeth grazed the bottom of her lip in a nervous chew. “I missed you too, Adre.” She admitted, giving him the satisfaction that he previously desired. “I was surprised to be the one to have gotten the letter and more shocked to see that I am the only one here. I was afraid you would forget about me. We were still children when you left.”
Marietta wondered about the types of people he met on his adventurers. Would they be beautiful maidens full of confidence? What of the men? Did he see more kindred souls out in sea than back home in politics? Would he desire to remain, or would his heart always call out to freedom? Could Marietta be a fraction of the enjoyment he may have had out there away from Athenia?
“Oh, so you’re the most handsome sailor to sail the seas? Are you quite sure? I had asked for your experiences, not tales woven by fiction.” Marietta giggled, returning to her teasing. She had momentarily indulged his ego, but that moment was now passed. “I do have a question if you will allow my evanescent curiosity. How was it that the ship did not capsize over the weight of your head? I am ever so curious about the engineering feat that must have been accomplished in order to achieve such a miracle.”
And what her? Marietta hesitated. There were many events going on in Greece, such as the famine. Events Marietta did not really wish to share. But prior to that? “I moved beyond my harp and paint now.” She had also taken an interest in engineering, though that she dare not share in fear of being mocked. “Exciting, isn’t it? My life will a life that is written about in epics. And the plays that will be held, the laughter among the crowd as they transition from one scene to the next!”
Despite the sarcasm, there was a hint of bitterness to her voice, masked behind feign amusement. Her life was dull, it had been before he was gone, and will continue even when he returns. Though Marietta had no room to be bitter. Most of this boredom was behind her design. She was so resistant to Sofia’s attempts of forcing Marietta to break from her shell. Scandal and the unknown kept Marietta complaint to that of social norms. Responsibility and expectations were weighed heavily upon the young girl. And thus the jealousy Marietta silently had of her friend, and the desire to see the world through his eyes. What beauty has he seen? What discoveries had he made? Marietta’s world was limited to Athenia. Her knowledge and vision were only of that which Greece could offer.
Before arriving at the horses Marietta sped up so she could walk in front of Adrestus only to turn around to face him. She continued to take careful steps backward, but her attention was on him. “Before we ride these horses, I do think it best to warn you. I am still not on good terms with these creatures. In fact, I believe as time passed, our relationship has worsened. They hate me, and the feeling is mutual.” Remaining on a horse was difficult for Marietta, and yet she never gave up on trying.

Adrestus knew Marietta was special, and he had been genuine when he said he had missed her. They hadn’t been extremely close, but deep down Adrestus had wanted to be, at least towards the end of his childhood. Never had a chance to, however. He smiled over at her. “I appreciate your presence here to welcome me home.” He confessed, before giving her a shrug. “We have grown now, I have hope that we can get to know each other even more than we had as children.” He did want to get closer to her, the possibility that a stronger friendship could blossom between them was exciting to him. Adrestus had seen a lot on his adventures away from home, and while he wished that he could have the chance to have more adventures… his duties called him to stay in Athenia. With his announcement, he would be staying longer than he ever had in a long time. He counted the fact that he still had friends in Athenia as miracles, and that he even had something at home to go back to. He knew his family would welcome him in. He wasn’t sure if all of his friends would welcome him back but he knew some would, just like Marietta had. That was enough.
He let out a laugh at her response and clasped his hands together. “That is my experience, I just told you I would never lie to you.” His eyes gleamed playfulness, and as Marietta made him happier, the more his eyes appeared to scintillate. His hands moved to rest against the man’s hips as Marietta talked about how big his head was, and the sailor rolled his eyes. “So you’re saying you are impressed by me to engineer my ship? Did I just mishear you?” Adrestus continued to tease her, having a bit of fun. It was all for a laugh, really, and Marietta just egged Adre on whether she meant to or not. And what had she been up to? “I would love to see some of your paintings, Marietta. I am sure they are lovely.” Adrestus complimented, hoping that she would allow him to view them. While it was easy to tease her, he found it even easier to compliment her. Adrestus heard the sarcasm and narrowed his eyes slightly, and the sailor looked confused. “I’d go to those plays.” He couldn’t help but wonder if she was jealous of his travels, and if she was, he wouldn’t have a clue how to deal with it. The only woman who had actually joined him on his ship had been Calliope, and she had escaped from Athenia. He was sure Marietta didn’t want to escape. It wasn’t like women were banned from being on ships, but…He thought it best not to ask Marietta if she was actually jealous. He had just arrived, he didn’t want to ruin his chances of a better friendship.
They arrived to find horses, and Adrestus smiled brightly at her as Marietta walked before him. “I know a lot about ships, but I will admit I don’t know much about horses.” So they would both have a hard time with this. He instantly wished he could ride a horse with her, but it just seemed too forward at the time. “We can take it slow.” He spoke, before moving towards one of the horses. He didn’t have any trouble getting on the horse, but keeping the horse steady was a problem. Adrestus breathed hard as he tried to get the horse to calm down, and the sailor’s hands ran through the horse’s mane. Shhhhhh, He spoke to the horse, as he wished he could just sail to where they were going. It was too far to walk it. He looked towards Marietta as his horse seemed calm enough. “Ride ahead of me. If something happens, it’d be easier for me to get to you.” Adrestus continued to pet the beast he sat upon, which seemed to be winning him over with the creature. He just hoped their journey wouldn’t be too long.

Marietta went through her typical routine when mounting a horse. It began with the silent staredown. She knew what the horse was thinking, what any horse was thinking. I will be the end of you, was what their eyes told her. It was very likely to be true. Marietta had yet to meet one that liked her, not like her sisters have. Some horses might tolerate her on their back, other’s wouldn’t let Marietta even approach, but none enjoyed her. As such, Marietta’s distaste for the creature grew more and more bitter with each failed attempt to travel by horseback.
After the exchanged looks between the two, Marietta finally climbed up on the horse’s back. His head quickly moved to either side and she nearly lost balance as the horse took a few steps forward. She ran her fingers through its mane, shushing the monster as she did. Eventually, it calmed enough to allow Marietta to have control, at least for this short while. Marietta did not expect it would last long, but as far as horses were concerned she was a pessimist.
It was only once she felt at least somewhat comfortable upon this beast did she allow her mind to wander back to their previous conversations. “You jest, but you never told me of your travels, Adre,” Marietta said as the horse moved at an easy pace. Her chin was tilted slightly to the side so she could talk over her shoulder. “If not the adventures you wish to speak of, tell me of the people you saw. It is rare for me to meet someone from outside the kingdom, and even rarer to see someone from outside of Greece. I really am curious about the world beyond.”
What are the people like? Did they laugh at the same jokes? Did they hold the same values? Were they kind? Mean? … Beautiful? The last question gave Marietta pause. If the greeks were created in the image of gods, then surely that outside of Greece could not be near as beautiful? And yet, as Marietta grew older throughout the years she found that she had an idiosyncratic view of beauty. Marietta, for example, could marvel as something mundane as a hairpin. To her, even the curves could bring her awe. The way it was shaped was so delicate, so soft, and yet it could support a surprising amount of weight. For others, it was simply a tool of which to style their hair.
“Are you here to stay, Adre?” Marietta asked next, though as soon as the words left her mouth she regretted it. What if he was only here for a week? A few days? He had mentioned wanting to get to know each other, so that must mean he was staying. Marietta had turned to face completely forward again. She was relieved that her face could not be seen at this moment, so he could not see the bubbling anxiety that had flickered across it. Marietta was being silly, but she could not help but fret over the idea of losing her friend so soon after he had returned.

Adrestus climbed onto his horse, though it took a bit to calm the creature down. He did finally become successful, and he called over to Marietta to stay ahead of him, just in case. They were both uneasy about horses, though Adre seemed more confident than the other. He smiled as she started to move with her horse. He widened his as she almost fell and started to try to catch up to her, but relaxed back when she steadied. He gave her a smile when she finally looked back at him, and he chuckled. “That’s true, I haven't,” He called her, thinking her curiosity was pretty cute. She mentioned she wanted to know about people and he ran his hand through his hair. “Well, I met a lot of interesting people.” He replied, before continuing. “I didn’t spend all my time hanging around royals, I will tell you that.” He wasn’t sure if Marietta would understand some of the people who he had met. His mind trailed off and thought of Saro. The strong pirate that he had fallen in love with… quickly thought of other people. “I've met people who don’t really believe in our gods. I owe my life to Poseidon, so I didn’t really understand their view, but we agreed to disagree for business reasons.” He explained. He left out the part about pirates, and he decided right then and there that he would never tell her about the shipwreck. He didn’t want her to know that he had ever been in a bad place. “People out there are not like us, you know.” He said a little bit more quietly, a little bit more sadly.
He paused when she spoke again, and looked away from her as they continued to ride their horses. She wanted to know how long he would stay this time. He thought about his duties- he was the heir of his family. The oldest son. He was here because of that. He wasn’t sure what he wanted, though…. He didn’t want to lose his freedom, but he also didn’t want to disappoint his family. His family was everything. “My father is getting older,” Adrestus uttered quietly, enough for her to hear but not enough for his voice to carry further than that. He didn’t immediately answer the question though, and he paused a little longer. He let out a sigh. “I am planning to stay here for a while. I have a duty to my family to stay here, figure some things out with them.” He frowned deeply and looked off to the distance.
“It’s not like I’m not happy to be here- I am. This is my home, I will be able to see my family, and see all my friends. But… I can’t help but feel like I’m about to lose all my freedom.” Adrestus was scared. His future was on the line, and he didn’t like that. Freedom was everything, but so was home. “I’m sure you don’t understand but this is a big deal for me being in one place. I haven’t been in one place for a long time in… years.” He ran his fingers in his hair and smoothed it out. “There are a lot of things that I am not sure about right now, I only know that I am going to be here for… at least several months.”

The road ahead was empty and the day nice. Surprisingly the horse obeyed Marietta now as it moved on ahead of Adrestus. She still felt her stomach flip with every small bump, half expecting the horse to send her flying off it’s back and into the dirt behind them. Gods, she could not even imagine how red her face would be looking up at Adrestus after such a catastrophe. She would sooner want to crawl under a rock and never resurface. Marietta attempted to be an elegant lady, as she was raised to be such. A moment like that would forever taint her demeanor in front of Adrestus, and leave a lasting scar upon her memory.
At first, Marietta bit back a smile when he mentioned that he was staying. The smile quickly faded as more words tumbled from his mouth. Her heart began to ache. The loss of freedom? Marietta could not begin to imagine. Freedom was a concept not even worthy of a dream to Marietta. Responsibility kept her grounded and fear kept her rooted in place. Freedom wasn’t feasible to nobility. It was one of the very few things that peasants could obtain that they could not.
Marietta was at a loss for words. How could she show sympathy when anything she said would sound so fake? Marietta lived a life of cowardice. Despite her desire to leave Athenia, to put her artwork out into the world, and to experience new things, she remained the dutiful daughter to her parents, and caring sister to her siblings. What right did the pusillanimous girl have to sympathize with Adre’s aches?
But she could not remain quiet. Her head completely turned now, tilting to one side. “No one knows you’re here, right?” Marietta said, for once with no careful thought to her words. They slipped one after another, without even a moment’s hesitation, “That means until the sun sets you are a free man. Are you not?”
What did she mean by this? Even Marietta did not know. Her eyes returned to the road ahead for just a moment before pulling back on the reigns to trot beside him. “Teach me, Adrestus. What does a free man do?”
Sofia had been her friend for years, far longer than Adrestus. And yet Sofia struggled to get Marietta to do something remotely outside of her comfort. Those two sentences were so innocent. They were filled with simple words, and yet the impact would be far larger than even Marietta could comprehend. Adrestus was here barely a day and yet his mere presence inspired Marietta. That… or corrupted her.
She felt that bubbling nervousness again. Thump, thump th-thump. Her heart beat harder as her grey eyes met his. “I mean…” Now her speech had slowed once again. She could taste each word, chew it thoughtfully, before releasing it into the world. “That is if you do not mind. I… I cannot understand, you are right. I…” She took a deep breath. Why now was it so hard to speak? “I never had freedom, not like you. But perhaps I can pretend for… just one day.”

He rode his horse calmly, hoping that it wouldn’t eventually kick him off. There was always a chance of that. He was more worried about Marietta though, and as they continued forward he kept his eyes on her. He spoke about some of the people he had met, but that didn’t seem to interest Marietta. Not that he thought she would, it was simply far away from what she knew and was comfortable with. He thought of his ex but quickly tried not to think of him. It felt like a complete lifetime ago when he had been with Saro, and Adre was now a different person. Things had happened. He had moved past it or tried to, anyway. She asked him how long he had been staying, and it gave him pause. He had a lot of emotions wrapped up with being home, including fear. Fear of the future, fear about how his life might be changing. He looked over to her to watch her reaction, and her words made him grin. He hoped that her kindness towards him was not obsequious towards him going through a lot, as if she was trying to sympathize too much. He didn’t want to be that burden.
“No one knows I’m here, you have a good point there.” He spoke, before thinking of all the things he could do if this was really his last night. He couldn’t really travel anywhere he wanted in one night, which was unfortunate. He was left with what he could do in Athenia, which….meant drinking or, even more fun, being with a lady. The thought instantly made him sit up straighter, as he thought more on how he could get her to blush. She looked gorgeous when she did so. “A free man can do many things, Marietta. Fun things.” He spoke softly, before making sure they rode their horse's side by side. He looked over at her and watched her for a couple of moments. He listened to her more, and let out a sigh.
“If I was really free for a night, or even a day, I’d spend it with a woman I had feelings for.” He smiled brightly, looking at her so he could see her response. “I’d never leave the bed with her.” He spoke slyly, emphasizing every word. He knew what he was implying, and he knew that Marietta would know it too. “Of course, I have a lot of experience with that so it’d feel amazing.” He cocked his head to the side. “Do you have experience Marietta?” He smiled, knowing she’d be horrified with his question. He knew he wouldn’t get a response. “I’m just you know, playing….”

Innocent. If you needed one word to describe Marietta, it was that. Her intentions were always pure, so too easily she could speak without realizing a hidden context. It took several moments before his words truly sank in. She stared at him for far too long before the words finally clicked in her mind and the meaning became pellucid.
Hic.
It started again. The incessant hiccuping, though unlike before it was far harder.
Hic! Hic! Hiccup!
It wouldn’t stop! Marietta looked away from Adrestus. How could he be so cruel? He said words knowing just how Marietta would react, she was sure of it! Marietta retracted her earlier thoughts. She should have sent him back onto his ship. She wouldn’t miss this inhumanity, this malice! Not even a day has passed and Marietta was like his toy, blushing at his command. Marietta had at least thought she had improved throughout the years. She had gained at least some semblance of confidence, and yet Adre reverted her back to her state nearly a decade ago. If she allowed this to happen, then soon all Adre would have to do is give her one look and send her into a fit of hiccups.
She had to do the unexpected. “Of course I -hic- have experience, Adre!” She lied miserably. “Nine years have passed! Do you see me as such a bore? I have plenty of experience with… with…”
She could not finish the sentence as the hiccups came tumbling from her lips one after the other. Her face burned hotter than Apollo’s chariot. Marietta wished she had not spent quite so much time on her hair. She willed the gods to make it come undone to shield her from further embarrassment.
This was why she rarely spoke! Marietta was used to hiding herself behind the words of her sisters, specifically behind Evi and Sanasa. They both had such a better understanding. Marietta understood politeness, but anything beyond that was something so beyond her reach.
And then, once again his words dawned on her. He had experience. The second realization sent her heart pounding so hard it echoed in her ears. How much experience did he have? Did she want to know? Did he think her pathetic for having such a childish reaction? Was he more of an adult? Marietta thought it right to wait until marriage, but did she think that only because she never had the opportunity? And why was Marietta surprised to hear he had experience? Of course, he did! Look at him! He was funny, he was confident, he was handsome and he was strong. Even his title, Lord Adrestus of Nikolaos, would be something women would throw themselves at.
She had never had a fit quite like this before. Her stomach was hurting and her horse, already uncomfortable by its rider, was getting agitated. It surged quickly forward, causing Marietta to lose the balance that she was already struggling to hold and begin to tumble backwards off of the creature.

Adrestus struck a grin when he heard Marietta starting to hiccup. He chuckled quietly as he gripped his horse’s mane, watching her as she was embarrassed by his words. It was a lovely sight. Of course, it was simply all for fun, he didn’t wish anything harmful towards her by any means. He found it amusing that they had almost reverted back to children- Adre harassing Marietta and teasing her so. It was incredibly entertaining, and his smile grew further. “I don’t see you as a bore,” He laughed, before shaking his head at her hiccups. She was so easy to frustrate. Adrestus was sitting up in pure pleasure at his ability to annoy the young beautiful royal so. He ran his hand through his hair as she continued to hiccup, and after a few moments, it was then that he began to feel concerned. It didn’t hit that he had revealed so much about his adult self and that it might bother Marietta. Well, truth be told, Adrestus hadn’t thought too hard about anything, only what would be entertainment.
His smile faded as she looked like she was losing control, and Adrestus quickly took action. The horse surged forward, and the sailor was already lunging forward. “Marietta!” He yelled, holding his hands out. Before she could hit the ground, the lord caught her in his arms. “You weren’t kidding when you said horses don’t really like you…” He said, before helping her stand on her feet. “Look Marietta, I sorry I teased you, I went too far…” He frowned deeply, looking her over. “I wasn’t thinking about what I was saying, are you alright?” He said, his voice concerned. He sighed deeply and glanced into the distance where the horse ran off to. He could go run and grab it, but he didn’t know how long it would take to catch it nor did he want to leave Marietta alone. He wasn’t that irresponsible. “You mind if we ride the same horse? Mine is more mild manners, and we can go get your horseback together.” Of course, Adrestus wasn’t thinking of the possibility that they could simply have servants get the horse but… he never really thought about that. Adrestus smiled over to her, before getting on his horse. He settled into his spot and offered his hand to her. “I’ll help you up. It’s alright.” He paused. "Or do you have another idea?"

She was tumbling off the horse with nothing underneath her. This was not an unfamiliar sensation, but it also so scary nonetheless. Pain would ripple up her body and bruises will pain her skin that sometimes took weeks to heal. Marietta’s eyes squeezed shut as she expected the harsh impact of the ground to slam against her. The impact, however, came sooner than anticipated. Marietta squinted her eyes open to see that she had tumbled into Adrestus’ arms. The smooth strong muscles she had been admiring earlier had wrapped around her, shielding her from the impending harm of the ground below. And at that moment Marietta saw something in her friend that she had never seen before. She did not see the child who left her as she fought tears knowing that she would miss her friend. She saw a man gazing down at her with concern with his hypnotic ocean blue eyes. His head blocked the sun above them giving him an almost ethereal glow, one that snatched the breath right from her lungs.
Oddly enough the blush that was previously on her cheeks faded, and the hiccups ceased. A full second of silence hung between the pair. Even her heart felt calm in his arms. Thump… thump… thump… Marietta was aware of every movement now. Every breath she took was controlled and measured. She was assisted to her feet. Marietta brushed herself off and straightened her clothes, now realizing that Adrestus was speaking. Her attention snapped back up to him. “You don’t need to apologize. Had you teased me or not, I most likely would have fallen anyway. I was due for a terrible spill. It had been far too long since a horse has lost its patience with me.”
Her eyes traveled back to where her horse had gone. She would not chase after it, that would be unseemly. A servant would do. But as Adrestus spoke, and offered for her to ride with him in order to catch it, that slow calm heart skipped a beat. And without thinking of the implications, she accepted his offer. Her hand slid into his. It felt warm and strong, much like the arms that had previously held her.
What on earth was she thinking?
Marietta sat behind him, unsure at first what to do with her arms. Does she wrap them around him to balance better? Keep them at her side and be polite? As the horse moved and she felt herself sway, she opted for the former. And yet another first could be claimed when Marietta did this. For the first time she felt… comfortable while on a horse. Not even just comfortable on the horse but safe. What witchcraft was this?
For a while, there was a silence that hung in the air between them. Marietta pursed her lips in thought. “Thank you, Adre this is very kind of you.” A small smile tugged on the corner of her lips. “Oh and Adre, I do believe I forgot to tell you this but… welcome home.”

For a while, there was a silence that hung in the air between them. Marietta pursed her lips in thought. “Thank you, Adre this is very kind of you.” A small smile tugged on the corner of her lips. “Oh and Adre, I do believe I forgot to tell you this but… welcome home.”
