"And your Xiphos is ready to go, It's freshly sharpened and able to cut down any Barbarian bastard that tries flail at you."
Maximus' father: Adonis handed the freshly sharpened weapon to the young man. When Adonis served The Siren's Call in the province of Almosis, he would habitually sharpen his spear and blade with a whetstone earning him the nickname:
Aichmirós xifomáchos. Maximus smiled swinging the blade in short thrusts the blade singing against the wind as he did so. Maximus was proud of his father, Adonis was taller than Maximus with massive shoulders and calf muscles. He still sported scars all over his body from the campaigns he participated in, particularly a jagged vertical scar that ran through his eye and to the corner of his lip.
"Hopefully that Barbarian will already be stabbed to dead stabbed to death by my Spear," Maximus laughed sheathing his short sword. Adonis taught Maximus everything he knew about military warfare and weapon techniques. He bred Maximus to be a great warrior, one that is worthy for the Kingdom of Colchis.
"The Colchian armies are the best in all of Greece," Adonis said turning on his heel, some of his light blue chiton twirled behind him. Whenever Adonis turned on his heel, that was usually a sign that Maximus needs to follow him. "It said that Colchis warriors are descended from Hercules himself." Adonis said his voice booming through Maximus' home. Adonis was known for his deep and throaty voice that sounds like stone breaking.
"Yes father," Maximus said struggling to keep up with Adonis.
"Then know this my son," Adonis said walking towards the exit. "Anger and madness are brothers. Do not give in to anger for it'll lead to a quick decent into madness. In war, you are vulnerable to these emotions these are natural but you must be aware. Stand firm and let these emotion pass. Be at calm, let the battle start when it'll start and let it end when it'll end. You are not a soft, plump citizen of Tangea, you are a Colchian solider one that is bred for battle."
Maximus swelled on those words for a bit. The first phrase that Adonis said didn't sound like a Greek proverb but he let it go. "Of course father," he said. "Thank you for your words of wisdom."
Adonis smiled placing his massive hands on Maximus' shoulders. "I believe in you," he said. "Your mother does and your entire family. We believe that you can achieve anything, but don't give to anger and don't give in sloth. You may go."
Maximus exited his house and found himself wondering around the streets, his mind in a daze. Maximus didn't dare talk about his father about his families familial roots in Africa. The last time they talked about it, the two of them had a shouting match. Maximus still wondered about Africa. He's heard from the merchants that it's mostly arid with sand everywhere, however a Bedoan merchant informed Maximus that Africa was once a lush, tropical paradise. These Bedoans seemed to be strong people like Colchians, a tiny part of Maximus felt a little out of place. Colchians were decended from Hercules himself, but Maximus was decended from immigrants. Would Hercules accept Maximus as an adopted ancestor or something? Probably but Maximus wasn't entirely sure.

Adelpha walked the streets in her usual fashion, with scrolls of parchment rolled up in one hand and a quill in the other, occasionally stroking the tip of the feather under her chin as she stopped to look at anything that caught her eye. At this moment it was a bird; a tiny little finch hopping on the ground while it's beak searched for little rocks to eat. Or was it little crumbs of food? She couldn't tell. She was paying too close attention on the feathers and how they seemed to change colours in the light while the finch moved. Already she daydreamed about what paints to use, what colours to mix, deciding on whether or not she'd just paint the finch itself or add some flora and fauna as well.
A shadow on the ground interrupted her thoughts, so too did it disrupt the finch's sense of safety for it took off in a flash. Clutching her scrolls to her, she looked up to see who the shadow belonged to. It was Maximus! Adelpha's face beamed at the sight of her childhood friend and she was quick to relax her stance again. Yet when she spoke her voice was still soft and almost hesitant. "You're home...It's good to see you back."

Yet when she spoke her voice was still soft and almost hesitant. "You're home...It's good to see you back."
Maximus heart stopped and he slowly turned around. "Adelpha!" he said feeling her hand touching his forearm. It felt soft and comforting. Adelpha and Maximus were best friends since childhood, when they first met Adelpha was a shy, sensitive child and it took Maximus a while to have her come out from her shell but once she did they became the closest of friends. Adelpha was always there for Maximus comforting him whenever he was sad and binding up his bruises after training. Maximus couldn't ask for a better friend.
It was then that Maximus hugged Adelpha tight his eyes stinging with tears. Maximus hadn't seen Adelpha since he enlisted in the Fifth Phalanx two years ago. He seldom wrote to Adelpha dedicating his time and effort to fulfill his dream in becoming the best Colchian soldier. Maximus easily regretted that decision, while he bonded with his brothers they didn't understand him the way Adelpha could.
"I missed you!" Maximus said still hugging Adelpha. "I'm back from my tour against the Barbarians." Bile formed in Maximus mouth and he quickly swallowed it. "Gods, I've experienced my first battle. I can't get the images out of my head."
It all came out at a rapid pace, Adelpha probably didn't understand what he was talking about. Releasing her, Maximus rubbed the back of his neck. "You haven't changed a bit!" he grinned. "If you're wondering how long I've been back well I've only came back a week ago."
Maximus sighed looking at the ground. "I'm so sorry I didn't write as often as I could." he said. "Forgive me."

Adelpha was quick in returning the hug, being mindful to not have her precious scrolls of parchment crushed in the process. Her eyes closed as she let herself sink into his arms. The two of them looked out for eachother, always, and being apart was hard to get used to. But she managed. Her only solice was in knowing that he had not been slain in battle. Word would have spread if that had happened.
"I've missed you too." The slight tension in his body as he recalled the battles briefly drew her attention. Adelpha was no fool. She knew that war wasn't pretty. It wasn't all heroics. No it was brutal and harsh. There was no mercy. War was a living nightmare.
She stood back a step or two after he released her from the hug and then inspected him, pacing around him as she usually did after his training matches. "I forgive you...Now, are you hurt? How well were your wounds tended? Any infections?"

Maximus stepped back realizing that he crumpled some of Adelpha's scrolls and parchment. He smiled a bit remembering how Adelpha would usually carry writing utensils and pieces of parchments with her in case she felt inspired and wanted to draw something on the fly. Tears threatened to fall out from his eyes but Maximus fought them off. Men do not cry especially Colchian men, amongst Tagnean and Athenian men they are permitted to shed tears. However Colchian men are hard and strong . They make sure not to let their emotions get the best of them; Still seeing Adelpha still the same after not seeing her for a year warmed the young man's heart.
Adelpha began to pace around Maximus examining his body for any wounds. Maximus gulped and he inwardly groaned. Adelpha and sometimes Celine would always check for Maximus and Basil for cuts and bruises after any activity. Adelpha especially, she was always worried for Maximus, Basil and Celine even stating when they were children that the only she feared was losing one of them. While Maximus appreciated Adelpha's worry since they cared for each other deeply, her constant inspections whenever Maximus got so much as a paper cut was a little intrusive. It was only going to get worse now that Maximus is a proud member of the Fifth Phalanx.
"I'm okay Adelpha!" Maximus laughed placing his hands on her slender shoulders. "Yeah I got wounded during my tour but I assure you that my wounds were tended properly. We Colchians fight a lot so of course the Kingdom invests in the best Physicians."
The young man then smirked. "Seessh if this is what I'm going to expect every time I come home from a tour," he laughed. "Then you'll spend hours inspecting me."
Adelpha was a kind and gentle person and Maximus made sure that she was protected at all costs. As annoying as it was for Adelpha to be examining him frequently like a Lieutenant examines the soldiers for any sign of mistake they are likely to do, Maximus appreciated her care. "I'm just happy to be home!" He said. "What about you Adelpha? How have you been holding up?"

Adelpha had a habit of doting on Maximus as though he was a sculpture that she was working on and trying to perfect. His battle scars only added to his character. Not only was she checking him for injuries that weren't tended to properly, but she was also commiting his image to memory more. There was bound to be a time when she'd lose him to war, as well as the rest of their quartet. Back at her home she had been working on some sketches of the four of them, planning on either creating a beautiful painting out of them or a grand sculpture. Regardless it'd be a serious undertaking. And so far she had the time for it.
"What have I been doing?" Adelpha repeated the question, if only to bide herself a bit more time to formulate a proper answer. "I have been working on a few art pieces, especially with Mother. She's been teaching me more on applying texture to fabrics on canvas. And at times, Father has bade me to work on my archery. That's all fine though, as it helps my mind to focus on other things when I get frustrated with an art piece." She paused for a moment in thought, her mind wandering to a previous topic. "How long are you here for, Maximus?"

"How long are you here for, Maximus?"
"Who knows?" Maximus smirked at Adelpha. "It'll probably be months since I will be deployed and- hey Adelpha! Earth to Adelpha!" the young woman had a particularly nasty habit of getting lost in thought. She claimed she has an artist's mind where she tends to observe her surroundings drawing inspiration from everywhere. Sometimes Adelpha's wondering mind has her zoned out in a conversation, preventing her from gleaming information and Adelpha's father often yelled at her for being lost in thought.
"Well all that art stuff," Maximus placed his hands on his hips trying to figure out the right choice of words "sounds interesting Adelpha. I mean textures and canvases riveting."
The young man had always had a hard time getting into hard. The only pieces of art that interested Maximus was that depicting great Colchian warriors or great battles. Adelpha and Celine found them disturbing and Basil was indifferent but to Maximus they were beautiful, sensuous and caused him to think about his place in Colchian history. "I did go out and achieve glory out in battle." Maximus said remembering the tour and trying his best get it out of his memory. "I was no craven."
Maximus didn't have the heart to tell Adelpha of the ambush by the Barbarians a few months ago. How he laid on the floor covered in a combination of Barbarian, his comrades and his own blood. How in what was supposed to be in his final moments, Maximus thought of good times he, Adelpha, Celine and Basil had instead of thinking of his kingdom. It was then, Maximus realized he didn't want to die gloriously, he wanted to see his family again, he wanted to see his friends again.
He closed his eyes trying to get rid of the visions of the ambush in his head. "I don't want things to change," Maximus said trying to maintain his breathing. "Sometimes I just want those days back of us playing sports and dominating or looking up at the stars wondering if they're other words looking back at us."

Adelpha was glad to hear that Maximus was staying for a while. However many months or even years that could be, she wanted to take full advantage of that. Her mind wanderered to the various things they could do; the quartet back together again having fun and enjoying eachother's company. It took her a moment to come back to reality as he worked to gain her attention. "My apologies."
She had to laugh at his less than enthusiastic response to what had occupied her time during his absence. Their concepts of what was considered good art was very different. Yet in secret she had been taken to study the forms that he liked so that she could have a better understanding of art as a whole.
Maximus had another moment. The war had taken it's toll on him, that much she could see. Yet he wasn't as far gone as others had been. She smiled and touched his forearm again, if only to help bring him back to the present. "We can have those days again. Maybe not as often as before, but we can have them. Would you like to come to my beach house?"

Adelpha's father: Leander was a retired Commander who fought in a pleathera of battles. The military was where Maximus and Adelpha's father met and they fought together side by side. While an arrow to the thigh ended Leander's career, Maximus' father worked his way up to General and helped Leander continue his military career namely become a military advisor for in house sessions. Since Adelpha was Leander's only child, she had some extensive archery training by him. She and Maximus would shoot arrows side by side when they were younger.
Adelpha abhorred violence of any kind, she would often fight with her father about the possibility of joining the Colchian army. Of all of the Kingdoms, Colchis was the only place where women can freely join the military. However, they were regulated only to the Archery division and as far as Maximus knew there wasn't any opportunities to move past private. Maximus remembered overhearing one of the arguments between Adelpha and her father. Leander saying that she was growing soft and plump like a woman while Adelpha yelled that she is a woman and her own person.
The young man felt for Adelpha and was often there to console her whenever she had a fight with her father. However Adelpha often ran to Celine first. Maximus nodded. "Sure why not?" he laughed. "I always wanted to get my tan," he pointed to his dark skin and laughed. Maximus' family didn't have a beach although they can afford it. Maximus' father said It would make the family too soft saying that the only they should focus on his their martial prowess.
Which was a shame because Adelpha's beach house was the place of many happy memories for Maximus. From playing hide and seek with Basil, Adelpha and Celine. To swimming in the Ocean or watching Adelpha and Celine build sand castles to the sticks and rocks that Basil and Maximus created. "So what's changed while I was gone?" Maximus asked walking beside Adelpha.

Adelpha laughed a little at Maximus' joke. Laying around on the beach to tan was hardly her favourite past time and he knew that. Which made it all the funnier. No one else would get the joke though. "Yes, you're looking quite pale these days."
She turned as he did and began heading towards her beach house, still clutching her parchments to her as though they were the most precious thing in the world.
"Things haven't changed much. I don't really go to see my Father anymore, as all we do is argue when I do. He just doesn't understand me at all." But when did he ever? Never as far as she could recall. Leander always wished she was a boy so that she could fight in the wars and become the soldier he wanted to be. "I'll bring glory to the family in my own way." Her mood soured a little as she thought back on all those arguments. Art was important too. He just didn't see it.
At least he wasn't pressuring her to marry and bear sons. Right now she was still trying to find her place. There was no need for anything else to get in the way. There'd be time for that further in the future.

Maximus' smile faded a little when Adelpha said that her and Leander don't talk much these days. "It's gotten that bad?" Maximus asked the young woman. Usually the tensions between Adelpha and her father would cool down after at least a day but now their arguments are coming to the point where their relationship may be irreconcilable. It would be a shame too, as much as Maximus doesn't like Leander for mistreating Adelpha he did have an expansive military mind. Maximus learned a lot about military tactics from Leander during his training.
"Colchian glory," Maximus said moving past a servant holding a jug of water over her head. "Is dominating the battlefield or doing a deed that is beneficial for the Colchian military."
The young man then shrugged. "I suppose the best way to do so is to paint and sculpt the Hoplites heading in to battle." Maximus saw Adelpha's beach house in view as his heart swelled with nostalgia though it was combined with the unfortunate memories of the ambush Maximus was in.
"Show us determined to fight for the Kingdom," Maximus continued. "And fight for a chance for the citizen to tell our story in case we die in combat."

Adelpha didn't respond when Maximus asked about the state of her relationship with her Father. She didn't need to. Her silence should speak volumes. Yes, she loved her Father and always would, it was just that it was so terribly frustrating to be around him right now.
"You sound just like him, Max. Fighting in battle shouldn't be the only way to bring glory..." How many times had she gone through this? Far too many for her liking. It just wasn't fair that that was how their society lived. In the military, Adelpha would be restricted. There was no rising through the ranks for her. She'd be unable to accomplish what her Father had, nor would she ever have the position as an advisor that he had now.
Maximus gave her an option, however; to paint or sculpt scenes of battle. He knew that she preferred prettier and lighter subject matters, but maybe it was something that she could present to her Father to bridge the gap between them. "For that to happen, I'd need to know details of the battles that had taken place. Even the gory ones..." Yet she wasn't so sure that anyone would be so forthcoming of that.
Once they arrived at her house, she unlocked the door and stepped aside to let Max go in first before following in after him. "Can I get you anything?" Adelpha set down her parchments and art supplies on the table amongst the others. There were half finished projects strewn everywhere in the house to the point that it all looked cluttered.

Maximus stiffened a bit when Adelpha scolded him saying that he sounded just like her father. Maximus didn't mean it like that, it was just that Colchis places value on glory based on deeds done in battle. They were a hardy people and the only Kingdom that was built around Mountains and have snowfall. "I never said that fighting in battle was the only way," Maximus countered choosing his words carefully. "But we do place a lot of value on fighting and any activity that supports fighting."
It was the Colchian way of life and Maximus was proud of it. While Adelpha is loyal to the city state, she had her own views on what Colchis should be. She had dreams of attending the Scholerio in Tangea one day to learn expand on her knowledge of art. Maximus remembered Adelpha conversing with Celine about possibly helping her pay through he education. Maximus never understood art beside the surface qualities but Adelpha was a very talented artist to the point that Maximus and Basil would fight to see who Adelpha would paint first. She usually get annoyed and say she'll paint both of them.
"I would," Maximus answered grimly concerning Adelpha's statement on soldiers not being forthcoming with explaining the details of a battle. "I think I have a lot to tell you about my..... experience in my first tour."
If anything, soldiers didn't need to talk about their experiences they show it through their blank stares or shaking hands. Maximus remembered waking up last night and noticed his hands were shaking uncontrollably from remembering the ambush by the Barbarians. He wondered if Adelpha would understand what he was going through. Would she lambast Maximus? Would she be by his side the whole time to prevent him from doing his duty because she was so worried for him?
As soon as the arrived at the beach house, Maximus nearly tripped on a strewn paintbrush that was on the floor. The young man looked around and saw a sea of unfinished art supplies cluttered on the floor and on the table. Adelpha wasn't the most organized when it came to her artwork. When she was immersed in art, she would focus on it and nothing else. "It's a bit...." Maximus began. "Artsy from the last time I was here."
Maximus flopped onto the couch looking up at Adelpha. "Do you have any food?" he asked twiddling his thumbs. "I'm a bit famished at the moment, I haven't eaten breakfast!"

Art was life. Art was her life. Adelpha dreamed of travelling all over, attending whatever schools she could to learn about different styles. Each culture had their own unique type of art. At times war destroyed all of that. Those that were conquered were assimilated into the cultures of their conquerers. However there were some aspects of them that remained. It was their art.
Adelpha furrowed her brows as Maximus agreed to give details of his first tour, if only to help her contribute in her own way. But would painting or scuplting scenes of battle be enough for the likes of her Father? She was doubtful. "Whenever you're ready, we can talk about it."
Food. Maximus was always thinking of his stomach and she was glad that that hadn't changed. She smiled and went to a cupboard, opening it to reveal a few bundles. Adelpha's hand floated above them as she decided upon which to take. Going for the middle one, she pulled it out and unwrapped it while she brought it over to him. Inside was a delicious sweet cake, sure to tantalize his taste buds. "I picked this up yesterday afternoon. I'm sure that it's a lot better than the rations you've had on your tour." She knew that they didn't exactly have gourmet meals during war. So this was sure to be quite the treat.

Yet it seemed as though Maximus fell asleep. Maybe the post traumatic stress was too much. Or maybe their old friendship was never to be what it was ever again. Was art that...boring to him now? Was she that boring? Perhaps that was why he behaved so strangely around her. Maybe he didn't even want to visit her at all. Had they not had their chance encounter on the street, he'd be off somewhere else that he'd rather be.
Quietly Adelpha set the piece of cake down beside him and then tip-toed out of her house to the beach. She kept her sandles off so that she could feel the sand between her toes, giving her the sense of being more grounded. The breeze played with the folds of her robe, exposing some of her skin to the sun. Without even a pause in her pace, Adelpha walked into the water. She needed a swim, she needed to escape her feelings of disappointment in everything, including herself.
Fitting in was never anything that she was good at.
