The Midas Hot Springs. Not only was it a place to relax in quiet contemplation, but it was also where one could get a sense of community.
Adelpha was in need of that a bit now. She was growing up. Life was moving on without her, much to the dismay of her Father Leander. He wanted her to fight in battle like Maximus. Given that she was the only child, Leander loved to press her on it. That always led to arguments.
Yet she clinged to the past. Her youth was wonderful. Maximus, Celine, Basil and Adelpha had lots of fun and adventure. They looked out for one another and were as close as any youth could be. Even as wars raged and each of them were dealing with different aspects of adult life, Adelpha still clung to the memories and the hope that life could go back to the way things were. She didn't contemplate marriage or having a family of her own. She didn't even think of bowing down to her Father's pressure and becoming an archer in the military. All that she did was move from one art project to the next, nurturing her own unique styles, yet studying and mastering the other more well known ones.
At times it was lonely. She felt lonely. But that's what stubborness and not doing what was expected of her can do.
Adelpha eased herself into the hot spring mud, relishing the way that it molded around her skin. It was as though she too could be sculpted by it. Perhaps by the Gods and Goddesses themselves. She watched the others nearby, listening in on their conversations to get a sense of how they lived their lives; how they fit in. Was everyone as stubborn as she was? More than likely that wasn't the case. So they were probably happier.
Adelpha studied them quietly to find out.

When did she close her eyes? Adelpha couldn't recall. All that she knew was that one moment she was awake and watching some of the others in the spring. The next she was waking herself up, finding that there were only a sparse few people left. It was embarrassing to say the least. Did she snore? Did she drool? Is that why nearly everyone was gone? Why did she fall asleep? Was the spring too soothing?
At least no one tried to wake her up. That'd probably be even more embarrassing. Adelpha was always the outsider; the odd one out due to her quiet nature. Perhaps she needed to get out in the world more.
Adelpha started to make her way out of the spring, moving to where her pile of cloths were so she could dry herself and dress. It was lucky that no one stole them when she was asleep. She thanked the Gods and Goddesses for that. Once there she picked them up and began drying herself off, losing herself in thought once again.

Celine had come to the spring for a treatment that day too, though she never stayed in for very long at a time. The fire in her childhood had also left her with a fear of getting burned by too much heat- even if not fire itself- and she'd already been in there for an hour. Still, her lungs didn't feel completely clear. Maybe she'd get back in in another hour. Colchis might be considered by some to be rather barren, but that didn't mean there were no plants at all. Her lung condition as well as a tendency to have terrible headaches seemed to be aggravated by them.
Now occupied with putting on the loose linen chlamys she usually wore to the springs, she, too, had felt awkward when she had noticed she was one of very few people left in the pool, though her still wheezy breath probably made it obvious why she was there today.
She was relieved to discover she wasn't alone in dressing. "Hello. I think you were in there longer than I was. Are you okay?" She often worried about other people getting burned by the heat if they stayed for too long in one particular area of the spring, too.
She often came here alone not because she particularly enjoyed being alone- not during a treatment, anyway- but because there were usually few if any people who she felt really understood her condition. She didn't want to always burden her family with it either, but try as she might, new relationships were still sometimes difficult after all these years, though she wanted so much to change that.
The springs might make a good subject for a painting, she thought as she considered her situation. She didn't know why she hadn't thought of it before. On a day when she felt better, she'd have to try. It seemed they were like her- unique, an oddity, seeming made for a specific purpose, made for relationship- but perhaps not too much, because of their natural heat.

Adelpha was nearly finished dressing, her mind focused on many different projects that she was either working on or planning on working on. Most of them were of paintings, yet she was slowly starting to lose her joy with creating them. Working with clay and sculpting was something that was starting to grab her attention all the more. Clay was soft and easy to mould. It was a far cry from sculpting with marble. Yet marble was expensive and she was nowhere near rich enough to afford a slab of it to practice on. Even clay had a cost to it, though sand did not. At her home on the beach, sand was in abundance. At least with that she could practice.
Celine's voice caught her off guard. She turned her head to look, just to be sure that her guess was correct and smiled upon discovery that it was. "Celine! Yes, I'm fine. I actually fell asleep in there. How are you? Are the springs helping?" As Adelpha spoke, she turned her body to face Celine squarely. It was a little strange to run into her, but certainly not an unwelcomed surprise. Celine was pretty much her only constant friend. Everyone else either left Colchis entirely or went off to fight in the wars. But it wasn't as though she made friends easily. On the contrary, it was rather difficult. And that of course made the prospects for marriage even slimmer. Yet that wasn't anything that she was ever obligated to do. She was an only child; and a daughter at that. There was no value nor anything to gain for her family. Such a thing might depress some, but for Adelpha it gave her more of a sense of freedom. She didn't have to conform to any mould or behave a certain way. She could just be herself. And there was nothing wrong with that.

Celine smiled at Adelpha when she asked if the springs were helping. "Yes, today they seem to be. I don't come here often enough, really. It's too bad the distance can be an issue sometimes. What brings you here?" It had been a little while since she'd seen Adelpha, but part of that was because Celine knew she liked her solitude. Solitude was wonderful for creating art, she had to admit, but unlike Adelpha, Celine hadn't made art her living. Sometimes she wished she could, but her dedication to her family- especially her sister Rhais- and the nature of her father's profession made her wonder if she had too much on her mind to be a good artist. Was the secret to creating truly good art that one had a lot of time to be alone? She realized that Adelpha was the person she would be most likely to ask. "Sometimes I wish I had more time to just...be." she commented. Like Adelpha, Celine had very few close friends, but in Celine's case, it was mostly due to her having lost everything once. She wasn't sure that if she lost so much again, she would survive the pain. But she was glad that she had managed to keep the friends she now had for so long. Sometimes she wished she had Adelpha's freedom, though. Having a father in politics and having to remember so many customs- especially when she had a touch phobia- often exhausted her.
"Do the springs help cure something for you, too, perhaps writers'- er, I meanartist's block?" she asked, genuinely curious. It was always a possibility that coming here more often might be easier for Celine if she had someone else to make the trip with. Generally, when she was in Midas for court, she visited the springs, but perhaps her condition would be helped a little more if she went more frequently. "Maybe if I could go with someone, I could come here more often."

"Oh I just came here to relax in the heat. It can be a bit chilly on the beach, even in my little house. The wind sometimes gets through the cracks and I don't really have a tub big enough to soak in. Nor do I have enough plain water to fill it. So here is nice." She wasn't rich in any stretch of the imagination, most especially as she had basically severed ties with her parents due to differences in the kind of future that she was to have. Her Father wanted her to go off to war, while she wanted to focus on life's beauty.
In regards to whether or not the springs cured anything for her, Adelpha just shook her head a little. "No, nothing like that. It's just for relaxing, a bit of brooding and thinking of different styles of art that I could be studying or learning." She gave Celine a little bit of a shrug. "And there's a little of the people-watching aspect of it too." If ever she painted people, their faces were generally made up, with little bits taken from different people that she had come across in her day to day.
"Did you want to come here more often? I could come with you. Or you could always ask Max. I'm sure that he'd love to."

"Brr!" agreed Celine at the thought of the wind seeping though the cracks in a house. "If I were in the same situation, I don't think I could breathe easily, either," she added honestly. "But don't you get lonely- or frightened- living on your own?" Celine never felt entirely safe despite living in Colchis for years, though her sense of unease was only especially heightened when war seemed like a possibility- as it did now. Still. in any case, she wasn't sure she could live alone, not ever. Agnodice's being a member of the archery unit didn't hurt, either.
She had to agree that sitting in the water was probably very relaxing, as well as a good opportunity to think, if one didn't fall asleep, as Adelpha had done today!
She couldn't help blushing at the thought of Max possibly naked in the springs next to her. But she couldn't deny, even to herself in her mind, that it was a sight that she would like to see, very much, in fact. She grinned so hard her cheeks began to hurt, even as she found herself unable to stop blushing. Still....
"It's a very good idea. Maybe even both of you at once could be there, sometimes." Even if Max didn't seem to know she cared about him as more than a friend- even if she had told him once, when he had seemingly only been wondering what if- Celine still felt as though she sometimes might need a chaperone of sorts in order to be able to keep such intimate thoughts to herself!
"Of course- it all seem to depend on whether or not we go to war. That will probably determine whether or not I most likely go alone." Celine sighed. She didn't like to think about it, but it was still a possibility that Adelpha's father might pressure her into going to war after all.
