It wasn’t hard to get settled back within his home. Adrestus didn’t remember the last time he spent more than 1 or two days in Magnestis, and now he was living back home. He wasn’t used to staying in one place, and while he could sail his ship throughout Athenia when he wanted, he didn’t dare go outside the kingdom. He wanted his parents to know he was serious this time. Once he was welcomed by Marietta, he had gone home to his family, surprising them. He was received with open arms, as expected, and while it hadn’t been the right time to talk about the future, he was still feeling pretty nervous. He didn’t know what was really in store for him now. Well, other than perhaps rekindling some old friendships and connections he had before his adventures. He hadn’t really gone to see Hector and Ismene yet, and nor had he really seen Elias yet. The last person that he expected to walk into his province, however, was Marietta. She had been a help to get him back home, but…again, as children, they hadn’t really been that close.
He remembered one moment, the last time he had seen Marietta...it had been brief, and he hadn’t been able to reveal his true feelings. It was all in the past though, and they were adults. Adrestus recognized she had a life in Athenia, and he really didn’t know what Marietta had in store for her, since she had royal blood. He was basically a newcomer, a noble who had been out of politics and the world of nobles for a long time. He wasn’t exactly expecting to come in and fit in right away. Yet, when he heard that an Antonis Lady had shown up to his province, a smile crossed his face. It had to be Marietta.
He quickly went back home and undressed from his sailor clothes. If she was in his province well… he had to impress her somehow. Maybe she would come back if he did things the right way...He dressed in noble attire, laced with some gold along the edges of his clothes with his family’s shiny seal. He had his servants help him groom his hair, and he washed his face. He did everything to make sure he looked good enough for her. He didn’t look like a sailor- he looked like Lord Adrestus, heir of Nikolaos. He hoped it’d be enough.
The next step was finding her, and Lord Adrestus arrived at the marketplace of Magnestis. He didn’t really make his presence known willingly, though because he was decked in noble attire, it was hard to not have heads turned towards him. He walked over by the seafood before he finally found her, and strolled over to the Antonis lady careful not make much noise. Adrestus smiled behind Marietta, and the Lord folded his arms. “I knew it was you who’d come here.” He said, his voice gentle but loud enough to where he hoped to startle her. “You couldn’t be away from me long, could you, Lady Marietta?”

After seeing Adrestus at the docks Marietta found it difficult to get him completely out of her mind. His essence appeared in every painting she made, every note that was plucked on her harp. At first the thoughts were innocent. She was happy to have her childhood friend back. But with each passing day a new emotion, one she hadn’t felt in years, began to ebb at her mind. There was a longing associated with thoughts of Adrestus. Or perhaps it was more correct to call it curiosity. This was not like the thoughts Marietta would typically have of her friends. She did not often find her mind wandering to Elias or Sofia, and yet daily she had found herself wondering what Adrestus may be doing. Was he settling back at home well? Did his family show joy at his return? Was he integrating himself more into noble life, or did he miss the freedom of the sea?
It was early morning when desire finally struct Marietta. She wanted to see him. She needed answers to her questions. So she broke the silence she typically was in while having breakfast in her sitting room, “I want seafood.”
Her servant blinked, unused to Marietta making requests while eating her breakfast. “I shall go speak with th-”
“No, no.” Marietta said dismissively. She gently blotted the food from her lips and stood up. “The seafood we have is not fresh. Ready the carriage. I would like to make a trip to Magnestis.”
Once again, the servant hesitated. This was much unlike the Lady who very rarely left the home, and when she did it was to observe the docks or read in the library. “I would be more than happy to fetch the seaf-”
“Then by the time you return, the food would no longer be fresh. Go now and ready the carriage. I must prepare myself for the day,” Marietta snapped, dismissing the poor girl. Marietta was quiet, typically, and timid. At most when she was angry she would destroy a vase that she was painting and command someone to clean it. She did not snap without a prior reason to, and even if she witnessed something improper or someone spoke with her harshly, Marietta barely acknowledged it and continued on with an even head. This may be why the servant had looked more confused than scared as she had left the room with hardly a sound.
Marietta’s pompous tirade was not done. She had royal blood running through her veins and today she will damn well act like it so that she could get exactly what she wanted. It was typical for Marietta to take time to get ready for the day, but this day was unlike any other. She looked at the garb laid out for her unsatisfied before sending her servants away to gather more choices, and even more choices after that, before settling on the first outfit she had seen that day. She chose a deep blue peplos lined with golden thread. A braid met a sea of curls pinned up so that it just gently falls down her back. Crystals were added to the curls, adding a dot of color to the brunette locks. Marietta then agonized over her next decision: Her jewelry. Her fingers slid over her many choices, feeling the cool metals underneath her skin. She finally settled on a golden armband who’s ends met in clear gem, glittering just like the ones in her hair. A necklace speckled with diamonds accented her elegant neck. Marietta was finally ready.
The travel was uneventful. When she arrived at the market she looked around. Eyes swept the crowd looking for her chance encounter with Adrestus. Unfortunately, fate did not bless her as she stepped from the carriage and into the market. There were only commoners making their day to day purchases. The market bore no signs of the Nikolaos anywhere.
It was then Marietta realized the fallacy of her plan. First, there was no telling where Adrestus was or if he even had time to see Marietta on this day. The second, and perhaps more important at this current moment, she knew nothing of the freshness of fish or any other marine life. So as her different servants and merchants showed her the food Marietta could only nod, pretending to understand the words that were being said.
Her disappointment quickly turned into surprise as she jumped at a man’s voice. Quickly Marietta spun around and saw Adrestus dressed in noble garb. She felt her heartbeat wildly in her chest. He looked handsome as a sailor, and he looked even better now.
No, Marietta. This is your friend. You mustn’t think this way! She scolded herself. Her face lit up in a smile, before remembering that he had just scared her. Very quickly that smile dropped and her eyebrows knit together.
Whack! Whack! Whack! Her hand lightly smacked his shoulder three times. “Lord Adrestus! You nearly stopped my heart!” She allowed her arm to drop as to not make a scene. “I didn’t come for you. I… I came for the fish. I tire of the food back home and longed for something fresher,” It was a lie and an obvious one at that.
“Well, look at you, my Lord. You look quite different than the day I first saw you.” She complimented, eyeing the heir of Nikolaos. “No one would mistake you as a Lord, this is for certain. I must say, it suits you. You seem… dignified.”

He got word that a royal was in his province and he could already guess who it was. He knew she had been keeping tabs on him since he had arrived in Athenia. The first day he got off his ship he had appreciated Marietta’s friendship, but something had seemed to change when they started to talk after 9 years of no contact. Their conversation was light, fun, and even flirtatious. Adrestus couldn’t get what happened 9 years ago during the last time he saw Marietta before he left for his adventures out of his head, and it was even harder when Marietta seemed to be reciprocating. In Adre’s mind, she was flirting back to him, even if she hadn’t meant to. So, when he heard that she had arrived, he dressed his best, just to impress her. He dressed as the Nikolaos heir he was, and made sure he was groomed properly for her. Adrestus wanted her eyes on him.
He couldn’t help but be quiet as he walked up to the Lady. He didn’t want to scare her a lot, but he knew if he startled her it was sure to be amusing. He was correct. He let out a laugh as she spun around, and his face brightened. He tried to avoid her whacks, but alas, she was still quick enough that he felt her hand on his shoulder. It of course only made him laugh more, as usual. He moved closer to her as she spoke, her eyes glued to the Antonis daughter. “Glad to see I can add excitement to your life.” He spoke, as if proud of his actions. He nodded when she continued speaking. “The fish, huh? Well you came to the right place. My province has the best fish in the kingdom.” He smiled over at her, and even while he spoke, he moved even closer to her, so that he could fully focus on her, and not anyone around them. “My family knows the fisherman who brought in what you’re eating here, good workers.” He continued, knowing that a royal probably wouldn’t care much of where their food came from, or who brought it in. He stood straighter when she commented on his appearance, and he glanced down at himself before looking at her. His arms rested at his side, and his eyes flashed vividly.
“You like it?” He asked, in terms of what he was wearing. He liked the fact that she liked him in noble clothes, and he knew that it looked better for her to be seen with him as a noble than as a sailor. He was very aware of that. He let out a chuckle, relaxing. “Oh, don’t tease me so Marietta, I haven’t heard so many compliments from you before.” He grinned over at her, before finally sitting next to her. “Mind if I keep your company for a while?” Adrestus softly asked, knowing she probably wouldn’t tell him to go away. “I have a confession to make Marietta.” He said, faking seriousness in his voice. “I’ve missed your company. It was a lot of fun when you welcomed me back.” He could be gentle when he wanted to be. He glanced at the people working, and ordered himself some alcohol, and ordered Marietta some alcohol as well. “To be honest I’m becoming more stressed than ever being back in Athenia.”

Marietta’s heart jumped when Adre made his confession. She could hear that his voice was tinged with false sincerity, but she hoped it was real nonetheless. Certainly Marietta felt that way, even if it was something she refused to admit. Excitement was something that Marietta lacked in her life, but when Marietta saw Adrestus that day she felt it. It caused her heart to pitter-patter, her blood to rush through her veins, and her breathing to hitch. So yes, gods dammit, she missed his company. She missed the fun that could be had with him.
Speaking of fun, Ooh, wine, she thought as her eyes lit up at the prospect. This was a dangerous game Marietta was playing when the goblets were set in front of the two of them. Marietta was no stranger to wine, but she could not handle it as well as she would have liked to. Drunk Marietta had much less of a filter and tended to make ill advised decisions. And yet, all the same, she was all too eager to drink the alcohol, savoring as it red liquid slid down her throat. It was not as good as what could be found at the Antonis home, but she would enjoy it nonetheless, especially when she was drinking with good company.
“Stressed?” Her head cocked as she took another sip of her wine. She placed it down in front of her. “I suppose your life here would be much different from that of sailing the ocean.” Marietta’s lips pursed in thought as she poked at the fish in front of her. “Nobility is… difficult. And complicated,” She wrinkled her own nose. “I do avoid it when I can. Trying to understand the world of politics, especially in current times, is oh so confusing.” Not to mention Marietta had no confidence in any of her thoughts. They were more often wrong, she was sure, and should be held back to prevent further embarrassment.
“But it doesn’t mean you can’t find a marriage between the two lives. Like… hmm…” Marietta trailed off before a sinister idea popped into her head. Marietta fought a mischievous grin from appearing on her face. She knew something that would be perfect and very fun for her. “Did you gamble while you were away? Why don’t you teach me a game you would play?”
Marietta had one hidden vice, something she would never say no to, and that was gambling. Marietta was typically an awful liar and someone who hated any sort of confrontation. But should a game be put in front of her, she would slit the throats of everyone at the table and take all the coin to be had. Marietta was ruthless, not above cheating to win. In fact, cheating is what made it so fun. Finding a way to trick her opposition to make sure she was always on top and leaving them none the wiser was what she loved doing more than near anything else. Elias had introduced her to gambling when they were much younger, and since then the two had created quite the system to avoid any sort of detection and always remain the victor of the night. Marietta would be more than happy to hustle Adrestus and play the confused beginner. It would be the perfect revenge for all the teasing he had done to her since her return.
Marietta took another swig of her wine before ordering two more for the pair. “Let’s do it. I’ve always wanted to learn.”

Adrestus struck a smile in the direction of her as she spoke, gripping his glass. He was a bit stressed in Athenia… Thoughts of the future, the pressure of just being around his family again, and the upcoming duties of studying to take his father’s place… it was getting to become a lot. It was looking to become even worse the longer he was in Athenia, too. He nodded as she said that his life would be different. “It’s worse.” He muttered, before shrugging. There wasn’t anything he disliked more than the thought of having to do something he didn’t want to do. And he didn’t like to have to be land-bound. He was getting tired of it, and while he was planning on sailing between Athenia provinces, it wasn’t open water. He missed seeing the sea for miles and miles. He gave her a grin about avoiding it. “Well, like I said, I can’t avoid it much longer. I’m dreading the whole thing.” He confessed, his voice seething with annoyance about the topic.
He turned his head to the side when she continued to speak, and Adre narrowed his eyes when Marietta mentioned finding balance. There was no real way he could see that he could be fully a part of two worlds without the sacrifice of something. He was sure he’d be able to keep his contracts, but… traveling just to travel probably wouldn't be an option. He wouldn’t be able to adventure and see new things- it’d be all about business and politics. When he married, which he had to at some point, his life would change forever too. He’d have to be the provider, the protector, not just of him and his friends, but of his wife and children. His whole life would be about responsibilities. It sounded so limiting.
Adrestus’s eyes grew darker and his expression became full of concern as he thought of it, and he barely caught what Marietta said. He blinked and looked at her, and he suddenly smiled. “Did you say gambling?” The noble perked up, and sat straighter in his chair. “Of course, I would love to! Beware though, I’m pretty good.” Well, he wasn’t that great, but he wasn’t totally poor at it either. He had gambled before in the past, and he had won quite a bit, but he had also lost a lot too. It was a game of chance, and luck was only on his side sometimes.
He smiled brighter and took a gulp of his wine. He started to get excited, and his body language portrayed that. He moved closer to her, thinking of some tips he could tell her. “Yes, I think this would be fun.” the noble observed her for a moment. “The most important thing in gambling I think is being really good at keeping your face neutral. Not revealing if you are winning or losing before the game is over.” This is a part he sometimes struggled with, but he tried his best. “We could do heads and tails, if you want? Or what would you like to learn to play first?”

The time to get revenge was approaching. All those blushes Adrestus brought to her face, those hiccups he brought forth with just one looks, everything was leading to this moment. Where she, Marietta of Antonis, shyest of the Antonis women, would squeeze Adrestus of Nikolaos, heir to Dastros of Varónos Nikolaos, for all that he’s worth.
That would exactly be what Marietta was a vengeful person with no sympathetic bone in her body. Alas, she instead wanted to have some fun, that was all. The look on Adrestus’s face when he saw that he was losing would be revenge enough for Marietta. Though, perhaps, she could be a little spiteful.
“Dice,” She said, as she leaned forward placing her elbows on the table. She propped her chin up with her hands, looking at Adrestus with her wide, innocent grey eyes. “I saw my cousins play once, and it looked to be so much fun. I’ll send my servants to fetch us a set.” There was too much chance in Heads and Tails. In a fair shell, assuming that would be what they used, the probability would be the same on either side. It never changed, no matter how many flips were made. However in dice Marietta had much more control. Not only with how she threw the dice, a technique she had been practicing for years ever since Elias had introduced her to the joys of gambling, but what numbers showed up also increased and decreased in probability. Especially as more dice were introduced into the game. For instance, two and twelve had the smallest probability of occurring as there was only one combination to get them, two ones, and two sixes. However, seven was the most frequent number as there were eight different combinations. Gambling was not all about chance, which is what intrigued Marietta when Elias had introduced dice to her. Mathematics along with a steady hand can turn the tides in any game. And, of course, loaded die and palming could help too.
Marietta saw no problem with cheating. It was simply a means to rid of luck and instead create your outcomes. Besides, gambling would be far too boring if there was no element of danger. Money? She had enough of it that if she lost the coin she would not even blink. And gaining more coin meant little to her as well. But to be able to out-think and outmaneuver her opponent? That was what gambling was all about.
Marietta pretended to listen to Adrestus as he taught her about dice once her servant returned. Her head tilted to one side as she feigned interest or confusion at parts. Through the practice games, she even allowed herself to lose, making ill-advised decisions, and throwing the dice haphazardly. After the second practice game, her eyes widened. “I think I understand now! Oh, let’s play a real game! But… instead of money why don’t we turn to drinks instead? Play with real stakes!”
The years and years of learning how to better throw dice came in handy. She felt the weight of the pair and in the practice games observed how they fell. These were slightly different from her dice at home, but not so different that she didn’t have any matter of predictability as to where they may land. Combined with her understanding of the most likely occurrences, she was fully expecting Adrestus to be drunk by the time she was through with him. And that was the best revenge she could ask for.
Marietta, at least, would be slightly kind. She’d continue to drink too. After all, what’s the fun in being drunk alone?

Adrestus was excited about the game. It seemed like something Marietta hadn’t done and it was a chance for him to play with her more. He didn’t think she was playing him- she had acted completely innocent up until this point. Adrestus gave her a smile as they got into a position to play, Adrestus beaming in happiness. Just a moment ago he had been feeling stressed, but now… every thought was about Marietta. He waited for an answer, wondering what game she would pick. He figured it’d be easy once, and he was a little surprised when she spoke her response. Dice. It was simple enough, but depending on how one played, it could be complex. Adrestus would go easy on her, either way, and the sailor struck a grin. “Perfect,” His voice was soft, yet didn’t lose excitement. Adrestus was planning on the game going smoothly- he was going to teach her some things, he was going to win, and they’d be on their way. “Dice is a good choice.”
Adrestus sat up straighter as the dice arrived. He was already thinking strategy, though he knew that most of what was going to happen would be luck. Adrestus explained the rules, of course, making sure she understood what they were. There weren’t many, but he didn’t want her to accidentally cheat. He also showed her tricks about the dice, keeping in mind he didn’t want to tell her too much. He had only played dice here and there- not often enough to be a master at it, but enough to understand a little more than the basics. Once he was finished explaining the dice, he decided to have them play a practice run. He had her go first, and although it was a short game, Adrestus won. He blinked towards her, before letting out a laugh. “See? Easy.” He spoke, before listening to her next words. “Fine, real game.” He paused a moment before glancing towards his almost empty glass. “Alright, we will play rounds and the loser is the one who is the drunkest.” He looked over at her, resting his chin on his palm. “Which will be you,” His eyes gleamed in playfulness, chuckling at the thought of Marietta getting drunk.
He gave her another look that was filled with his confidence before he started their game. In the first couple of rounds, Marietta seemed to need to take a drink more than him, but Adrestus became increasingly nervous. She played… way better then he would expect for a beginner. And then Adrestus of Nikolaos began to lose… a lot. He shook his head every time the dice rolled against his favor, and the man began cursing. He didn’t understand it! His luck usually didn’t treat him like this. He groaned as he was forced to take another drink, and shot a frustrated look towards Marietta. “You’re enjoying this too much!” He snapped at her, yet again taking another drink of alcohol. He started to lose big time, and the more alcohol he took in, the more he started to lose his focus. Finally, Adrestus gripped the table and rested his head against the hard surface. He shook the table a little bit in anger but didn’t knock their things over. “Youuuuuuuu winn!” He slurred loudly, his voice rising in volume. “How the hell did you…” His voice trailed off and he sat back up again. The sailor was pretty drunk at this point, and he leaned against his seat.
He looked at Marietta, frowning at her, before starting to giggle. His giggles were light and high pitched, and the sailor threw up his hands. “You!” He only spoke one word, not understanding he hadn’t finished his sentence. His giggle fit lasted for a bit before he finally stopped, and Adrestus moved closer to her. “You’re actuuaalllyyyy reallyyy pretty when youuu win.”

Marietta did not drink near as much as Adrestus, she didn’t have to. Marietta knew when to make a bet and when to pass. Rarely did the dice fail her. And as Adre got more and more drunk, he got more and more sloppy. It was so easy to beat him. He was good at this? Hmph! She hadn’t had this easy a time in ages. She would have to teach him a thing or two once he sobered.
And once she sobered. Marietta wasn’t cruel. While she was drinking slower than Adre, she certainly wasn’t planning on remaining dry. For every three drinks he had, Marietta had one. Marietta was a lightweight. It didn’t take much for her face to flush red from intoxication and for her movements to become much more loose and flowy. Getting drunk in public? Adrestus sure brought out the worst in her, as most of her friends did.
When Adrestus lowered his head to the table, she did the same. For a moment grey eyes met blue ones. And Marietta felt it again, her heart. Thump. Thump. Th-thump. But all of a sudden her world was shaking, and she sat back up. Adrestus was being a little bit of a sore loser, and Marietta couldn’t be happier. She won! Her need for revenge was sated!
“Yay! I win!” her hands clapped together excitedly. She teasingly stuck out her tongue teasingly towards the young Lord. “I thought you saaaid you were good!” Marietta’s tongue was heavy too, her words starting to stick together like honey. She drank more than she expected to, clearly. Although one could argue it’s not the drink that got her quite this way but the company. She was feeding off his energy, with any worries she also previously had disappearing without a trace.
And when he complimented her, instead of blushing, she giggled as well. The happy sounds poured from her lips one after the other. Giggling turned to laughter, tears of joy springing to her eyes. She couldn’t stop! She was having so much fun.
Once Marietta calmed herself, wiping the tears from her eyes, she looked back at Adre. Her smile was as brilliant as the sun in the sky. Once again she placed her elbows on the table and used her hands to prop up her chin. “You’re actually rea-hic-really handsome alywaaas.” She flirted shamelessly.
A drunk Marietta was very different from a sober one. Typically the young woman would act very controlled. Each and every word was filtered, thought about a million and one times, before slipping past her lips. Her voice was soft, gentle, and calm. But a drunk Marietta was much louder. She spoke without thinking, and typically they were her most honest thoughts, ones that she wouldn’t even dare think sober.
She was fairly close to Adre as well. Her gaze never left his. Thumpthumpthumpthump. She chewed her lower lip. Even drunk he made her so nervous… and yet all the same she was excited. He was an experience, one that Marietta desperately desired.

Adrestus knew that he would win. There was no sense that he wasn’t going to - plus Marietta was acting like she hadn’t ever played. He was fully confident in himself and excited to play with the woman who he held a crush for. He had liked her before he had left to travel the world, but now that he was back his feelings for her had simply grown. She was lovely, smart, and incredibly fun to be around. It checked all of Adrestus’s boxes, that was for sure. Marietta had given him probably more attention than when they were children too, and the more he was around her the more he was comfortable with his feelings. Of course, he wasn’t going to say them out loud, and he hadn’t courted anyone since….
He lost. He couldn’t believe that he had lost their bet! He groaned as he gulped down drink after drink. He was frustrated with himself to lose his luck so much, and the fact that he was losing to a girl he liked. It was embarrassing. Pretty humiliating. Adrestus gripped the table as he drank the last drink of the game, and was swaying just a tad. The game was over and he felt incredibly drunk. Adrestus felt annoyed that Marietta had beat him at the game like it was nothing - especially when she had told him it was her first time. How could that be?? He had never expected it to happen. He let his eyes roll when Marietta announced her win, the sailor not too pleased. “Ladyyyy Marietta, youuuuuuuuu” He leaned towards her before swaying back, unable to finish the thought. The drink had taken hold of Adre, and the sailor had to lean on his chair as well as the table to keep upright. “I amm good!” He snapped, nodding his head forcefully. “I am!” He was sure of it. It had to be a trick.
But then, his embarrassment didn’t last long. Giggles came rumbling out of him, and he couldn’t stop. He didn’t really try, anyways. He heard Marietta giggle, which made the sailor look at her and giggle more. The noble’s smile was wide as they finally calmed down, and he moved even closer to the other. A drunk Adre led life on his emotions- he was just as confident, and just as adventurous, but he was also slower and his mood swung back and forth without any reason. But being close to Marietta? All he wanted to do was be closer to her. She was so much fun. Fun was what he craved… He let out another giggle, and leaned over to her ear. “Shhhhhhhhh!” He shushed her, before letting out a laugh. “Shhhh,” He reached to touch her arm, and looked around like he expected people to be watching them. Some were looking at them, but it was mostly because they were loud. Adre smiled towards the Lady. “Marietta, Immmmm glad you saiddd something,” Adrestus confessed, his eyes playful. Why was he glad.
“Haveee you ever thought, what if?” Adrestus paused a minute, as if in thought. His mind was in a whirl though, and the pause seemed very long. It was almost as if Adrestus was trying to think of what he was trying to say. Trying to come up with the words he was trying to speak. After moments passed, Adrestus finally was able to continue his thought. “What if we kissed?” Adrestus covered his mouth with both his hands when he said that and looked around. Adrestus was clearly riding out the happiness he felt, which was exaggerated by the alcohol. He was feeling confident, too and he pulled his hands away from his mouth and smiled. “I won’t ttttell anyone.”

They were both giggling maniacs. When he leaned forward, shushing her in her ear, Marietta only giggled harder. Normally if he did that it would cause her to blush brightly and swat him again and again until he backed away. But right now? It just made the nervous bubbles in her stomach to boil even faster. He was so close. She could feel his hot breath against her flesh. It caused the hairs on the back of her neck to rise. Why was she letting him be so close? It was because she was drunk, right? There was no other explanation?
And when his hand touched her arm, she felt her heart once again squeeze. Why was his hand so warm? She could feel the roughness that came from years of sailing etched into his palms, and yet the touch to her was soft and light. It was a conundrum that didn’t make any sense. Her mind was playing tricks on her, bogged down by too much wine and girlish thoughts.
And then he asked a question, one that did happen to cross her mind once or twice before. A kiss. She typically shoved any sort of fantasies away when she did have them. Adrestus was a man of experience, and Marietta was clearly lacking. Adrestus has seen the world, gotten a taste for the exotic. Marietta was boring. She had an idealized version of the world in her head but when it came to reality she was just too afraid to face it.
“You wouldn’t want to kiss me,” Marietta pouted. “I’m booooring. My sisters are betterrr. Prettier too.” Well, maybe not Hebe quite yet. She was still young and innocent. But Evi? Marietta may be a lady, but Evi was a woman. The same could be said for Sanasa. Marietta was lacking in every way when it came to the two of them.
And then there was Sofia, one of Marietta’s closest friends. She was incredibly beautiful and so much more fun to be around. She was a freer spirit and was never afraid of experience like her friend was. And she was able to balance that adventurous attitude with responsibility. She was the exact type of person that Adrestus probably liked. Marietta could imagine them sailing around the world together or showing up to court arm in arm making everyone jealous over how fabulous the two of them looked together.
But she shouldn’t sour the mood. Drinking wasn’t fun if you were all gloomy. So Marietta perked but. “But shhh, secret! I thought about it! I imagined a kiss right here!” She tapped her lips. “But don’t make fuuun! I’ll be mad. You don’t wanna see me mad!” As if that were possible. It took a lot for Marietta to get mad, and even when she did it was mostly internalized. The girl was so afraid of conflict that any anger usually was spilled into her art or the poor workers at the Antonis house had to listen to a huffy Marietta for a day or two.

Marietta’s giggling was music to his ears. Even in his drunken state, it made him feel bliss to see Marietta so happy. It made him get closer and closer to her. He started thinking about other possibilities, enough to wear he started saying his thoughts out loud. He was riding the wave of happiness- no one was going to be able to stop how happy he was right at that moment. He touched Marietta’s arm, and when she didn’t pull away his confidence grew. She was all he wanted, and, well, he saw a chance. He was going to take that chance as if it was the only one he had. He frowned at Marietta’s response and shook his head quite dramatically.
“Wrong!” Adrestus yelled loudly, enough that everyone around them could hear. “You’re the bestttttt, lovelyy.” The noble slurred his compliment, smiling as he did so. He didn’t know if his words would make her feel better, but his mind was slowly coming up with a plan. Marietta was sad- he had to make her feel better. Perhaps it was his drunken mind, or perhaps it wasn’t- Adrestus couldn’t think of a better girl. He wasn’t interested in her sisters, and honestly, he hadn’t thought about courting anyone since the accident. Things were certainly changing, and perhaps being drunk was the push he needed.
“Secret, yes.” Adrestus agreed. Ignoring the fact that they were in public, Adrestus didn’t think about all the eyes that were on them. Instead, his eyes were all on her. He grinned her way as she continued to speak, and slowly, ever so slowly, he moved his face closer to her. “I won’t make fun of youuuuu.” He explained, before reaching to touch her cheek. He let out more giggles, before scooting his chair closer to hers so he could more easily access her. “I don’t want youuuu mad, I want youu happyyyy.” Adrestus touched her forehead with hers, giggling more. “Can I kissss you?” He whispered, waiting for an answer.
Once he got the answer he was looking for, he closed his eyes and leaned forward to kiss her. Being drunk, he wasn’t a good aim, and his lips pressed into her cheek. He laughed once he realized, and moved his head a bit, before trying to aim better. He leaned forward once more and finally planted his lips against hers, not really caring about her inexperience. Even if she didn’t know how to kiss- he was still going to kiss her. And once he did? All he wanted was more. He kissed her again on the lips and again…. Her lips were so soft, it was just as intoxicating as the alcohol. He reached forward to slide his hand into her hair as his kiss became deeper and braver than before. There was the smell of alcohol on her breath, but she tasted… good. Well, incredibly good. He moaned softly, before pulling away and opening his eyes. “Can I kiss morrree?”

He was so close. Inches away. Her breathing completely hitched. For a moment Marietta was lost in the sea of blue eyes. The world just disappeared completely. The fact that they were in public didn’t matter, nothing mattered. The only person who mattered was Adrestus as he put his forehead against her’s. His words were so magical, and brought fluttering to her heart. She never once imagined someone saying this to her. Maybe once she married someone her parents told her to, but certainly not before. Adrestus wanted to kiss her? Not one of her sisters, not one of her friends, but her? And not for some nefarious reason like just wanting to get laid either.
This was different from her crush on Hector two years prior. Those were frivolous thoughts of a girl desperate for excitement. He was handsome, he was experienced, but it was puppy love that was all. This was something entirely unique. There was a spark between Adrestus and Marietta, a force that drew the two together. So all she could do was nod and close her eyes.
But the two were sloppy drunk, and it was not lips that met at first but her cheek as he kissed that. She felt herself blush, worried this was a second prank. But as soon as the thoughts entered her mind, they dissipated into dust. His lips finally melded with hers and Marietta felt herself just melt into nothing. They were like puzzle pieces that slid together. They moved in unison, upper lip closing on the lower. And when he deepened the kiss Marietta gladly reciprocated. She sighed softly when his hand slid into her hair, leaning into the man before her. Her teeth gently grazed his bottom lip as they pulled apart for just one moment. And to answer his request, Marietta simply closed her eyes and leaned in again. A third kiss, in public, without a care in the world. Her arms wrapped around his neck. Everything felt right at this moment. Marietta could not be happier.
And then it all came to a sudden stop. Her eyes flew open and she pulled apart suddenly, a lock of shock flickering across her face. Eyes glanced across the room and saw that their actions were being seen. Her face grew red. She wanted to vomit. She wanted to hide. This was uncouth. This was scandalous. This was… this was bad!
“I… I forgotten I… I have to be b-back home.” Marietta stuttered, stumbling back. What was she doing? This was so unlike her! Drunk or not this… this was a mistake. Even if this is what she desired more than anything, she shouldn’t forget herself. She was a lady, and Adrestus a lord! And… she couldn’t be what he truly desired. If he were sober, this was not what he would want, surely. It was Marietta after all, the least important and oft-forgotten of the Antonis sisters. “I… thank you, m-my Lord, it was a, erm, l-lovely time.”
She fled. Without a second glance she left the establishment, hurrying to her carriage as fast as she could. She felt sick, nervous, confused, and embarrassed. Marietta had made a fool of herself, and she could only hope Adrestus would not think ill of her and forego their newly found friendship because his companion had forgotten herself. She hoped he could forgive her.

Adrestus moved closer to Marietta, his beating heart increasing in speed. His drunkenness gave him confidence like no other, and he was riding out the happy feelings she gave to him just by being there. The atmosphere around them was ignored as Adrestus touched his head to hers, and nothing mattered anymore. Nothing but her. He wanted to kiss her, he craved it. He felt the need for the taste of her lips, the intoxicating closeness of her to wrap around him. Once she nodded the nobleman went for it, leaning only to accidentally place a kiss on her cheek instead of what he had been aiming for. He giggled, pleased she wasn’t moving away from him because of it. Finally, he pressed his lips onto her, the sloppiness of it not even phasing him. He just wanted her, and that was that.
He melted into the kiss, moving even closer to Marietta’s body. He let out a soft moan as he ran his fingers through her hair drunkenly, still kissing her. She tasted sweet and lovely, it had been everything he had been thinking about. Those around them certainly felt different, seeing the two kiss in their wastedness. He enjoyed every second of it while he kept his eyes closed, and his mouth pressed into hers. As much as he would have liked to continue, he stopped, wanting to look at her again. She was just so…. Perfect. He ignored the eyes around them who were looking, and perhaps judging them. He honestly didn’t care. But he didn’t even think about how she would feel, and his eyes grew wide as he noticed that she was getting up. “Waitttt…” He called out. “Why are you llll-leaving?” In his state, he didn’t understand. They were having fun. Hadn’t she said yes to the kiss. “Don’tttt…” He pleaded with her, before standing up from his seat. He was unbalanced and, almost falling, he clutched back on to the table as Marietta went out of sight. He hadn’t wanted her to go. The nobleman was completely confused, and he felt despair arising. He must have done something wrong. Maybe she hadn’t wanted the kiss.
He paid for the last drinks, and, once he was able to get one of his crew to come and help him, Adrestus stumbled home. With each step, he continued to think about Marietta, and wonder what went wrong.
