Celine was miserable today, and there was no hiding it, even for decorum's sake. What was before one heart would now be ripped in four, for she would be leaving a piece with each of her three friends, who were all leaving for the war without her.
She was the only one of the four of them who'd never trained in some kind of weapon. She had thought about it, especially to protect herself and Rhais, but she was so rarely completely without her family anyway, plus she would have felt horrible going to war and leaving her sister without anyone who was able to understand her.
She had come so close to losing everything at such a young age, however, that she knew she would never feel entirely comfortable without one of her friends close by. This would be the first time in a long time that at least one of her three best friends would not be close enough for Celine to visit, and she would have been lying if she said she was entirely comfortable with that idea.
Celine couldn't let her friends' last sight of her be marred by tears, though, even if they probably would have understood why she cried.
Probably, only they ever would. But she'd spare them that- she couldn't think of not seeing any of them alive again or she'd mentally snap, as if she weren't close enough to doing so already. And with both of those things in mind, as she looked through the crowd to find Maximus, Basil, and Adelpha, she kept her head held high and her breathing slight, still afraid if she made any noise at all that it would end with her in tears. Sweet gods. She couldn't lose everything again. She was afraid if she did, she wouldn't be able to live through the resulting pain.
Adelpha. most likely, would be the most uneasy, as she'd never wanted to join the military in the first place. Celine had no words even for prayers anymore about that situation. If it was a condition for Adelpha's father to support her love of art, then so be it- but it didn't mean Celine liked it either.
She didn't like any of this, but nobody was required to like war, they only had to go. She only wished she didn't feel so alone, as the only one of the four staying behind. Stress and emotion was making it harder to breathe than usual today. Still, if she must be alone, she would try to bear it without tears, even if that meant there couldn't be any words spoken between the four friends. They knew each other so well by now, maybe words weren't even necessary anymore. Still, head held as high as possible, she pasted on a smile as she searched for her friends.
She'd leave them with that, at least.Still, she was uneasy. For the first time in what seemed like an age, she'd be alone. She couldn't go back to Taengea- things were seemingly even worse there than when her family had left. She sighed despondently.
What am I supposed to do by myself? I haven't got a clue. With my friends in Egypt and my other friendships long past, whom could I possibly reach out to? I'm afraid to go crazy with no one nearby who understands not only the political uncertainty, but what I've lost before. I can't lose all my friends again; I don't think I'd survive, not mentally anyway, and Rhais needs me.
She was really not sure which god these thoughts were addressed to, or if they were addressed to any god at all. She no longer feared physical injury or death for political reasons, but even knowing this war had probably been coming for awhile didn't completely take away the nervousness she felt as a consequence of having to be on the alert.

Maximus' back began to stiffen.
Even though it's been 3 hours since Nike forced Maximus to hold the sack of sand, it felt like a lifetime. It was coming to the point where Maximus was convinced that the time the Colchian army reaches Tangea, he'll be a hunchback. The young man looked around the ship, Nike commands a different army on another ship and he has other things to attend to than monitor some Lieutenant who came late to inspection. Maximus felt shame for what he's done but surely it's punishment enough wearing a bag full of sand for hours. The young man sighed thinking about his friends: Celine, Basil and Adelpha. Celine was lucky that she didn't have to go off to war. Being an ambassador's daughter combined with her physical problems such as her struggling to breathe made it difficult to enlist.
Adelpha and Basil on the other hand were miserable. Adelpha especially as according to Celine, she sobbed on her lap for hours when Adelpha was conscripted into the Fifth Phalanx by her father. Maximus remembered receiving a letter by Basil saying that his father forced him into the military or he won't let Basil continue his education. It was hard to read the letter due to Basil tears splattering all over the letter creating huge ink blots.
It wasn't fair for the parents to dictate the lives of their children. Those going to war must have a clear mind. Adelpha and Basil's talents lie elsewhere forcing them into a role that they clearly don't want will just lead to doubt and will get them killed. Maximus dropped the sack of sand feeling the grains hit the back of his feet. The young man leaned on to the side of the boat and placed his head down. Basil and Adelpha dying in battle to think of that is just inconceivable. A cold chill surged through Maximus' spine his back loosening up however Maximus stomach felt as though it was about to be disconnected from his body.
Maximus' best friends, the first friends he made. They were his extended family and a major reason why Maximus continued to train as a soldier. He wanted to protect Adelpha and Basil from any invaders he hoped and prayed that they wouldn't be dragged into this madness. Yet here they are, Maximus couldn't imagine what they were thinking right now. At least Adelpha will be part of his division so Maximus can watch out for her. He was even friends with the Archery Lieutenant so perhaps he can arrange for Adelpha to be more of a scout that way she won't get to see much action. Basil on the other hand, Maximus just prays to Ares to watch over and protect him.
As he slowly lifts his head Maximus opened his eyes and immediately saw a familiar person. “Celine!” Maximus shouted tripping himself as he ran off the boat to greet her.
Celine was wearing the dress that he bought her two years ago. A filmy an flowy Indigo and Coral Red dress which exposed one of her long legs through a slit. Celine also had her hair down and was wearing the gold earrings that he bought her for her fifteenth birthday. Maximus remembered telling Celine to look that forever. A pretty and confident woman, he liked her that way. Maximus rushed to Celine and hugged her tight rubbing his hand on her exposed back. It was part of the reason why he liked that dress, It left her back exposed accunating her body.
“You're here!” Maximus said hugging tight unwilling to let her go. “I was looking everywhere for you!”
Letting Celine go, Maximus took a lock of her brown hair placed behind her ear. “You look perfect,” he said. “And you smell like fresh cut spring flowers.”
The young man then hugged Celine again. It may be the last time Maximus gets to see her. He didn't make any bones that he might die in battle, Maximus made sure he'll die gloriously if that happens. But that didn't mean he won't miss the ones he cared about. “Please Celine,” he said staring into her eyes. “I don't want to let you go. But It's my duty as a soldier to fight for Colchis.”
Maximus looked down on the ground feeling a bit shameful for what he was saying. Celine dreaded this moment, she'll be left alone hoping and praying that her friends will come back safe and sound. Maximus didn't think much about the citizens who will deal with the burden of their friends or spouses possibly dying and them waiting for that inevitable letter saying that they died with honor. Maximus whished things would be simple but part of him wanted to cling on to Celine and never abandon her.
“I just.....” Maximus racked his brain trying to find the right words to say. “I really like your look Celine everything about it can you wear this look forever?”
Okay that did not sound right.

Okay that did not sound right.
Even as she knew she had to hug him- it might be the last time she did- Celine's back stiffened. She rolled her head and shoulders, trying to get rid of an ache in her neck that wouldn't let up. She felt way too tense to even speak, not to mention afraid to either cry or lose the air in her lungs.
Yes, there was a sadness now, and tears that were forming behind her eyelids despite her refusal to actually shed them. But there was also anger, too, and the pain in her neck made her irritable as well.
“My enemies could be anywhere and everywhere, and I'm not just talking about the Egyptians. That's what I learned from the fire. Even though I do care about the Egyptians, my own people could have been trying to kill me ten years ago, and the vigilance I've learned remains even though the nervousness has faded. I can't do this anymore. I've already lost everything once, but it seems like no one cares about that because you're all leaving me alone. Do any of you even know what that's like? You're going to war, but you've enlisted. I didn't get a choice about whether to leave Taengea." And now, years later, she didn't get a choice about saying goodbye to most of the important people in her life. Thank the gods her father was staying, but her brothers were going to war, too- even Telemachus, at nineteen.
She sighed again. “Please forgive me...but I can't stand it anymore. I feel like I've worked too hard trying to rebuild my life to lose it all again and survive with my wits intact. Is there such a thing as being brave for too long, do you think?” She asked him seriously, looking into his eyes when he finally let her go. “You always said I should relax sometimes and let others take care of me, but now I can't, and I know it.”
Celine wasn't yelling, she just felt desperate and helpless. She knew it didn't matter- that no matter what she said, she could not hold her friends here, but damn Adelpha and Basil's fathers. Not that she would fare any better with Max gone- how she loved him!- but did everyone she loved have to go at once?
Celine wasn't angry as much as she was heartbroken and worried for her friends, but sometimes sadness and worry made one angry, too. And she wasn't really angry at any of her friends- only the situation. Still, how much could one person take in their lifetime?
Her voice softening, even though she had never raised it in the first place, Celine stepped close again to whisper into Max's ear.
“Would you like to kiss for luck? You don't have to if you think it's gross.”
The same words she'd used when they were eleven and he'd been going to be in a tournament, only then she had been being polite, as he had still been a stranger to her then. She had just thought that kissing for luck was just what people did, the same way it was common to get drunk at a festival.
Gods, what she wouldn't give to get drunk right now- but she knew the things such behavior often led to, and the only one she wanted to do those things with was right in front of her and about to be leaving for now.
She would wait for him.
The kiss, though, if he agreed, would mean more now than it ever had.

She would wait for him.
The kiss, though, if he agreed, would mean more now than it ever had.
Celine wasn't taking this any easier as Maximus. A combination of fear, anger and paranoia was etched on her face as she lamented about her past, the fact that Maximus, Basil and Adelpha are being shipped off to war. Celine always mentioned how alone she felt at times even though she had been surrounded by a loving family and friends. Maximus wanted to cry with her, tears were starting to form and were about to reach his eyes however the young man fought them off.
"I'm about to be a man, he thought. "I'm about to do my service for Colchis for my family and more importantly Celine. It does them no good to see me in tears. For it will distract while fight in battles.
Maximus was aware that there were people who would prey on his emotions on the battlefield. He needed to focus but it was hard to do so. Saying goodbye to his best friend was just as tough as it was for his family. Celine was the most vulnerable, she had no weapons training and felt that her family was being targeted based on her home being set on fire in Tangea when she was a child. Celine always felt safe around Maximus, Basil and Adelpha but now they were heading to war to an uncertain future.
The young man was afraid that Celine would panic and struggle to breathe but she stood tall trying to remain strong. In many ways, Celine has made significant progress with her anxiety and breathing problems. The friendship she forged with Maximus, Adelpha and Basil has helped tremendously. Celine fit the three like a glove her loving, protective personality meshed with them and the big three became the big four.
Maximus smiled taking his thumb to brush the small tears that just left Celine's eyes. “You've always been strong,” he murmured. “And brave Celine, you've made sure that we were all safe and now we will have to lay our lives down for Greece. But just know that it's not how much we see each other Celine it's how we think about each other.”
That was the Teacher told Maximus once in one of his opium induced sermons. But he was right, a person will truly die if people forget them. Maximus held Celine's slender, soft fingers and tightly squeezed them. “As long as you continue to hold us in your heart,” Maximus said placing her hand against her chest. “Our bonds will never break, Celine you mean the world to me and a major reason why I fight is because I want to see you smile.”
Maximus went closer to Celine's face when she asked a kiss for luck. A shot of nostalgia came over the young man. Celine said those exact words when the first met under that arena all those years ago. Those were innocent times, good times where Maximus was a wide eyed wonder kid who eagerly latched on to stories. Only now when he's standing at the edge of the world is where Maximus desperately wanted to believe in the power of stories once more.
“Well,” Maximus chuckled touching her forehead. “They say when you earn a maiden's favor, the Gods give you tons of energy.”
Maximus sighed feeling nervous all ready. “Celine?” He whispered. “You've always been my pillar of strength. Can you lend me all of your energy so I can come back to you? That we can laugh and have great times again.”

“It's not just you, though. Everyone except my sisters and parents are leaving, even my brothers. And Agnodice would have gone, too, if she hadn't been betrothed recently. I can't stand it. Keep Telemachus out of trouble for me, will you please? He can be a prankster, that one, and he too will be a man. It isn't seemly. I know what harm tricks can cause, even in ignorance.”
On a totally different level, Celine hated Max's own words about becoming a man. Because she knew she wouldn't be the girl to make him one....
So much loneliness assailed her at that moment that she felt she would rip apart from it. His touch on her cheeks, brushing away her tears made her shiver just a bit. And then, just like before, he repeated the same words he had used when they were eleven as well. For a moment in time, it both went backward and froze there where it had stopped at once, to somewhere only they knew.
This time she was the one to cling to him first, before gently cupping one hand on his jaw, the other in his hair, the texture of which felt so different from her own silky waves, then running her hand over his back.
And then she kissed him with her entire being, so much so that she nearly lost her breath, for a completely different reason other than the negative kind of stress. She was almost happy that she was slightly losing her breath as she kissed him. Her head whirled with her all-consuming passion of the kiss, but her thoughts were so clear it hurt. I love you, I love you, I love you...ten thousand times and more. To anyone else watching, would it look as though they were more than friends? She knew no one would likely fault the daughter of an ambassador for giving a kiss for luck to a departing soldier, but still.
To her, his lips felt soft and firm at once, and when she finally let him go, it was as if she weren't even here anymore, but somewhere on the clouds. She could have been heading to Olympus for all she cared, and she would always remember this, their first kiss, for she would never have done so without asking first of all. She hoped with all her heart that Max would remember it, too, even if they might never be more than friends. She barely even noticed the others anymore, other than to sense they might be watching. To Celine, it felt as though she and Max were alone in the world.
She had almost missed saying goodbye to everyone, but she had noticed at the moment before she had left that she had forgotten to put on shoes. She probably looked like a ruffian at the moment, despite the fact that her hair was down in the way he seemed to like and she was wearing the dress he bought her when they were eighteen. She was every inch an ambassador's daughter except for having no shoes. But she didn't care one bit, even if the whole world were to notice that the daughter of Cassander and Andromache of Acaris was barefoot.
Between when Celine and Max were eleven and now, how had nine years gone so quickly?

Between when Celine and Max were eleven and now, how had nine years gone so quickly?
Maximus never saw it coming.
He expected a soft and quick peck on the cheek or a kiss on the forehead for luck. He even wanted to kiss Celine's hand showing that they have come full circle since their fated meeting since they were eleven. However Celine took the initiative, pulled Maximus and kissed full fledged on the lips. Maximus eyes widened in shock, it felt as though his eyes were about to pop out from his sockets. The immediate rush of energy coursed through his body, his entire being felt a sense of elation. Maximus surrendered to the kiss slowly closing his eyes, for a brief moment Maximus savored Celine's strawberry scented lips merging against his.
The young man closed his eyes as he wrapped his strong arms around Celine's exposed back. Maximus didn't feel in control, part his mind wanted to let go of Celine's lips but another part desired it, needed it. Was this a kiss for luck? Or was it more? Celine claimed this was luck but her actions suggested otherwise. And for some reason Maximus' wanted more it's not possible. They were friends! Maximus was in love with Nethis! But the young man felt his blood churning, swirling desperate for more of Celine's kiss.
When Maximus first kissed Celine on the hand, he felt a certain course of energy that got him excited and felt like he can take on the world. Now it's...… that same feeling of euphoria and more. For a moment Maximus felt like he was riding high to Olympus trumpets blaring by the spirts. Was this a sign by the Gods that Celine could.....
"It was a kiss for luck," Maximus thought as he kissed her passionately slowly rubbing Celine's exposed back enjoying the smooth, lovely skin on the tip of his fingers. It felt like he was rubbing a piece of silk clothing. It was Maximus' favorite part of Celine's dress that exposed back never before it felt so satisfying to rub it. "But It feels like it's a kiss to build a dream on."
Against his wishes, Maximus released himself from Celine's kiss opening his eyes to see the girl who was best friend of nine years standing in front of him. It was painful to leave her behind, even more painful as Maximus had a feeling that the kiss was more than just for luck. However his heart was pounding ten times as fast as though he was running around his neighborhood for training. Maximus felt like his brain was turning into mush, he was a warrior but already he could see himself melting in to a puddle.
Blinking Maximus attempted to snap out from his stupor. It was an interesting turn of events, but he needed to focus and needed Celine to know that she shouldn't worry about him while he was gone. Kneeling, Maximus took the sand that beneath his feet making sure that it was secured within his hand. It is a Bedoan tradition one of the very few things Max knows about his Bedoan roots taught by his Grandfather when Maximus was 8 years old.
“Take this,” Maximus held out Celine's hand and secured the dust in her palm before closing her hand. “It's from my familial roots. According to Bedoan tradition if you keep the dust from a person's footprints. Someday they'll come back home.”
Subconsciously Maximus gently bumped his forehead against Celine as he squeezed her hand holding the dust. “Don't let go,” Maximus said with some desperation in his voice. “Don't you ever let it go. With that dust, I will always be with you until the day I return you are to release the dust to the winds for I have found my way back to you.”

It was difficult one-handed, but she pulled a tiny fabric bag out from where it had been hidden, secured by the belt of rope on her chiton, when they finally let each other go.
Despite not wanting the words to slip out, they did anyway, though so softly that she was unsure he would hear them. She already hurt enough- why not make her pain as all-consuming as her love today? If her life were going to potentially fall apart anyway, she'd rather it happen all at once, not surprise after surprise like when she had been ten.
“It was more than for luck. So much more...”
Three years of love...all contained in one passionate mingling of their lips- at least on her part.
She held up the hand with the bag to stop him in case he were about to speak, another tear slipping out of her eye despite herself.
“No, don't say anything. I know...I know...”
She couldn't continue. But what she had been going to say was that she knew she had probably shocked him, and that she knew he wouldn't make up his mind immediately.
He didn't have to.
“Here, take this, please, before I lose the sand. Now open the bag...”
While he held it, she released the sand into it; then she lifted out the necklace, made a few days ago of some of her own hair, even if she knew that in other countries, particularly Egypt, someone's hair could be used in a spell against them. but she trusted him far too much to think he would do that. It was made with a common Greek key design, with a single rose of hair, weighted in place by a heavy, round bead that matched the dark blue color of her eyes in certain lights.
“Fresh cut flowers,” she said with a throaty chuckle and a wink. That's taking that phrase somewhere I'm almost sure it never went before! “Keep it close to you at all times, and not just because I gave it to you. Hair can be used to aid curses in Egypt. Basil probably knows this as well.”
Celine stepped close to Max again, unintentionally- or not?- softly brushing his chest in passing, and she was unable to resist another raging kiss as she slipped the necklace around his neck.
Now he would have twice the luck and love... and then she couldn't resist a third.
Three kisses, one for every year she'd loved him so deeply. In her bones, in her flesh, in her soul.... Sweet Aphrodite and @athena , both of you, I love him...please... protect him if you will it.
She'd normally have never told Athena about love, but she wanted someone to know that the decision to love him had also been made with all the wisdom she'd gleaned in all the years she'd known him. It was not one made by mere chance or lust, but also made upon analysis of his personality and his respect of Adelpha and herself.
“I have heard war can make a man lose his head, and make rash decisions at times. Or a woman,” she added, thinking of both Adelpha and her own sister Agnodice.
“But with everything in you, swear to me, don't get so drunk on either blood or wine as to do anything stupid! I-I'm afraid I won't make it without you."

It was hard for Maximus to comprehend what had just transpired in the past few seconds. One moment he was close to regaining his composure trying to forget the slip up that he made during inspection and try to focus on the war. However Celine's kiss had shattered any progress he made. Maximus' heart was still racing, his legs felt like old clay that was about ready to collapse. Celine's cryptic words saying it was more than just for luck ran inside Maximus' head swriling around his brain. What did she mean by that? More than just a kiss for luck? Did Celine wanted it to be.... more?
Maximus just stood there staring at Celine dumbfounded. He wasn't sad or anything like that. Just stunned. Maximus wanted to speak try to say something after he gave Celine his dust and explained the meaning behind it. Yet as soon as he gave it to Celine and she placed it in her little brown bag tied to waist, any words regarding the kiss failed to get past his throat. No matter how hard he tried, Maximus wanted to say something, anything about the reasons behind that kiss but his mouth refused to move, his mind was still scattered.
He was a warrior trained since he was six to be tough and disciplined but he wasn't prepared for a woman's touch. Not with Nethis and definitely not with Celine.
“No, don't say anything. I know...I know...”
Well Maximus can't say anything right now, it was as though Prometheus himself had stolen his ability to speak. Oh how much he wanted to talk to Celine. What did she know? What did she mean by that? The only thing that was clear though is at this moment, Celine had never looked so beautiful as before. Maximus didn't say anything and opened the bag while Celine carefully held the dust that Maximus gave her. Simultaneously taking out a necklace with what looks like her hair.
Maximus frowned a bit, the necklace looked like a Greek key with her hair tied into a rose. Celine always liked creating things from her hair, Maximus recalled her giving Adelpha a necklace made from her hair as part of their annual art exchange. It had the Greek symbols all over it, Adelpha wears the hair necklace on occasions but otherwise keeps it secure in her room. “Indeed they are,” Maximus managed utter out from his mouth at last when Celine said that the necklace was a fresh cut flower.
He can still smell the strawberry perfume from the strand of hair that was used to help form the necklace, Celine likely made it this morning. Maximus continued to stare at the necklace as Celine explained that the necklace can protect him from possible curses in Egypt. Given the Egyptians rumored love of magic, this could be a boon.
“Knowing Basil,” Maximus said forming a shaky smile. “He probably read all-”
Celine kissed him on the lips again.
Maximus wasn't caught off guard this time, he knew behind Celine's watery eyes was a desire to feel him again. That impulsive part of Maximus, the part that his father told him to hold back during training, the part that he spent years of self discipline trying to suppress came back stronger. Maximus couldn't spit out the question about Celine's kiss. Maybe kissing her again he would find the answers he sought after.
"What was the purpose behind the kiss Celine?" Maximus thought closing his eyes as he gently rubbed her exposed back. "What do you mean that it was more than luck? Ares help me I wish you can come with me! I just have so much I want to ask you! But It seems that I'm unable to speak about this kiss!"
Another kiss, this time more softer and innocent than the last one yet there were no answers. Maximus felt like he was drained of his energy. His mind was reduced to ash, his body felt so light that a small breeze can easily knock him to the sea. Celine wanted to do everything in her power to make sure that Maximus comes back safe and sound. Maximus was prepared to die for Colchis, but the dust he's given Celine. The Bedoan tradition of sealing a promise that he will return one day, he must not die.
“I've learned first hand of being craven in battle,” Maximus said remembering that Barbarian ambush. “Instead of fighting, I feared for my life. But I have something or someone that goes beyond Colchis. On my honor Celine I will come home. Hold on to that dust and it will be so.”
The young man then frowned. “But Celine,” he said brushing his thumb on her cheek wiping off a tear. “I want you to stay strong and always think of me and Adelpha and Basil. We can never die if you keep thought of us in your heart. I do have questions something I'm struggling to get out. But please smile and keep me in your thoughts. We will talk again when I return.”

He had seemingly misunderstood almost everything she said. She wanted to tell him he didn't have to make up his mind. The tears had just made speaking too hard. She rephrased everything just once more, so he'd be sure to understand.
“More than half of the people I care about most in the world are leaving me today. That's why I feel like I can't be strong anymore. But I won't hold any of you here. You wouldn't like it- you'd surely resent me eventually...even if Basil and Adelpha would probably be grateful. I wish I'd been able to talk to my father; he above everyone understands my need to feel safe- maybe he could have done something to keep at least Adelpha here, but now it's probably too late. I should have thought of it sooner. Then maybe I wouldn't be in danger of losing everything again.” Oh great, now Celine was beating herself up in the absence of anyone else to blame.
“And yes, the hair will protect you, but what I meant by keeping it close is this: If anyone else gets ahold of it- let's say someone from Taengea who holds a grudge against my father- then they could use it as part of a spell to curse me. And you're my pillar of strength, too, or haven't you noticed that by now? You don't have to make up your mind yet, but I might as well tell you I've loved you passionately for three years now and if my life is going to fall apart again, this time, I'd rather it happen all at once!”
There had to be someone else he favored, or at least she suspected it. There was always someone else. Friends never fell in love....
Did they?
She had held these feelings inside for three years. But now her world was imploding.
He had to be told, regardless, or he might never know while he was still alive.
Too many goodbyes. Too many potential losses. Too many things that could have gone differently. Too much danger, for herself and those she loved. And a pain in her chest that could only mean one thing- but her attack was probably going to happen later, when everyone left.
At least, if it took her life, as she sometimes feared it would do in times of great stress, she would die happy because she had finally kissed Maximus of Laconia.
Celine had never felt freer in all of her life. And suddenly her head came up in surprise.
What was it he'd just said?
'Sweet Ares, I wish I could take you with me.'
Gods.
That meant something, didn't it? A well of hope bubbled in her chest, which suddenly didn't hurt so much anymore.
And she kissed him again, just once more, because she felt she had to, now that he would know what it meant for certain.
Passionately.
Dizzily.
Seeing stars.
The gods could make some people stars when they died if they so chose to. Iphigeneia, Cassiopeia, Andromeda... now, maybe, Celine. She clung to Max harder than ever this time before preparing herself mentally to rise into the atmosphere.
But no, when she let Max go again, Celine was still blessedly alive.
And that meant that maybe eventually, everything would be all right again.
“ Yes. We can talk again when you return,” Celine murmured in his ear.
Her smile had never been brighter.

Maximus was often teased by Basil, Adelpha and Celine for being a bit thick headed sometimes. He thought of himself as intelligent but admittedly some things can fly over his head. Of all the times to be slow-witted why it had to be now? At the edge of the world where loved ones are saying their goodbyes as the soldiers march to the unknown to fight for the glory of Colchis? What was wrong with Maximus? What about Celine's kisses that he did not get? He racked his head going back to the time they've met where Maximus kissed Celine's hand for luck. The time where he tried to sell her of as his manager when questioned by the competitors.
What was he missing? What was the reason behind Celine's not one but three kisses? "I think you know the answer," A voice spoke in Maximus' head. That same voice who taunted him for being a coward during the Barbarian ambush and choosing to lay down beneath his brother's corpses. The same voice that taunted Maximus for years. "Don't try to deceive yourself Maximus in your heart, you've always known the answer."
The young man tried to understand the voice, but it was no use he's deceiving him again as it always does. It was best to ignore and try to understand what Celine was trying to say. Brushing the round bead of the necklace Celine had given him, Maximus listened intently on what Celine was saying. How the people she cared about was going to leave. Yes, it was unfortunate but It was their duty that some did not want but must do in order to serve the city state.
Even though Maximus was annoyed with Celine and Adelpha's constant worry he was always grateful that they cared. That he knew, what was the point he missed though? Celine was in danger of losing everything again but once again Maximus assured her to be strong and that she was always strong. This talk was just a repeat though Maximus can't blame her, she, him, Basil and Adelpha were always attached to one another.
“And yes, the hair will protect you, but what I meant by keeping it close is this: If anyone else gets ahold of it- let's say someone from Taengea who holds a grudge against my father- then they could use it as part of a spell to curse me."
“I'm doubtful that'll happen Celine,” Maximus chuckled though it felt hollow. The repeated kisses from her still made his mind muddled and confused. “But I will always keep close to me. For I know even in battle you're watching over me.”
For the first time since the ambush, Maximus felt like turning on his heel and running away. It was all overwhelming, he could not face his best friend like this. So many emotions striking at every part of his body like a volley of arrows. But deep down, Maximus knew there was more to come. Celine struggled with her words but she gained confidence the more she spoke.
"And you're my pillar of strength, too, or haven't you noticed that by now? You don't have to make up your mind yet."
“Of course I've noticed Celine,” Maximus responded out of desperation. “We all share a bond something that will never be broken. Like I said j-just.”
Where words were succeeding with Celine, words have failed Maximus. He wished he didn't have to deal with this. He needed a clear mind for battle, there was no use in dwelling in this. The Egyptians wouldn't care if Maximus had conflicting emotions, he would be an easy kill for them.
"but"
But? There was always that dreaded but, suddenly carrying a bag of sand didn't sound so bad after all. Maximus just wanted to get away from this, it was too much handle. He is a warrior of Colchis trained to serve since he was six. Never in his life that he would have to handle feelings such as...…
Wait a minute? Was that the answer? The reasoning behind these kisses, the desperation? That emotion that Maximus shared with Nethis? That four letter word that Maximus did not receive training to combat. That word which made him write a love letter to a woman that he desperately wanted her attention. The four letter word that Maximus thought that his father take care of through an arranged marriage.
"I might as well tell you I've loved you passionately for three years now and if my life is going to fall apart again, this time, I'd rather it happen all at once!”
Maximus stared at her in stunned silence. He expected to feel something, but he didn't Maximus wasn't surprised. But why? Why didn't he-
"You've always known it.
That voice, as much of a nuisance it was Maximus. As much as it taunted him and haunted him. Maximus knew the voice was right, he knew that Celine loved him for three years. He felt Celine moist lips collide with his as if it were to hammer home the point. Maximus closed his eyes and brushed his sandal against Celine's barefoot. She didn't wear any shoes which made her look even lovelier.
“I know,” Maximus mumbled when Celine released herself from Maximus lips and whispered in a sultry voice they can talk again once Maximus returned.
“All those years,” Maximus put his head down. “For some reason I've always known that you loved me.”
He loves Nethis, did it blind him to Celine? No, it has to be a dream one that he'll wake up from.
“Come with me,” Maximus said gently grabbing Celine's hands though it felt like it wasn't him. “Please come with me Celine. I need you.”
He needed to know, he needed to ask Celine questions. Maximus' heart was aching with the women in his life.

He needed to know, he needed to ask Celine questions. Maximus' heart was aching with the women in his life.
His words poured over her as he gripped her hands. First, he spoke in what sounded like a duly embarrassed mumble.
'I know. All these years, for some reason I've always known that you loved me.'
He sounded almost sad, like it might be too late to do anything about it. And it might. But she couldn't think that way, she had to be strong now, even if it took a message from Hermes himself to heal her shattered trust in safety enough to do it.
Speaking of trust in the concept of safety, would she ever sleep again? The nightmares about the fire were bad enough without adding a world where no one she cared about who left her ever returned again.
Celine had to regard Max a little skeptically despite herself, but she gave him a wink to show she was half-teasing.
“You knew, hmmm? Did you really? Or was just now like the headache Zeus must have had when Athena popped out- that you must have known something was there, but maybe didn't see it until it...emerged?”
And then he said what were thus far some of the most beautiful words she'd ever heard from him in all the years they had known each other.
'Come with me. Please come with me, Celine. I need you.'
'I need you.' Not 'I love you,' but still so beautiful to hear that she smiled a full-on smile, showing her lovely teeth. Thinking hard, she squeezed his hands back, not wanting to let him go until she had decided.
“Rhodopis and Agnodice can help Rhais," She decided on the spot.
“Yes! Perhaps when I return, I will have some of my fears extinguished.” Extinguished. It was perhaps peculiar that she'd chosen that word, since the whole reason she was worried she would never feel safe again was because of a fire....
She wanted to be ten-year-old Celine again. No fear, no mental scars, no horrible nightmares- though they came less often now- that left her panting, sweating, chilling, and feeling like she'd run as fast as some human messengers themselves had to.
“You will find me in Hermes' wings. Please remember that.” That was the merchant ship's name she'd be on, she decided, the Wings of Hermes. He'd know the reference, as she'd chosen Hermes as her patron long ago, though few people other than her friends and family knew it. And he'd probably also know that she would never lie to him. If she said she was going with him, she was. Period. Even if it was risky being on a merchant ship, she really couldn't think of any other way quickly. Besides his admission that he needed her, she felt she needed to explain her sudden confession of love to Max.
She knew what she would have to do once she got on the ship, however- face a deep fear, another she'd had since the fire, of being in enclosed spaces....
It was Celine's own idea, though, this time, and not something forced on her by the heat that had so quickly enveloped the enclosed space that had been her home. And while Max had just better remember the meaning of her words sooner rather than later, she would think of him the whole time she had to be there.
Being able to be near her friends- and the man she loved- at all was the only way Celine was going to be able to sleep tonight- and maybe any night ever again until the war was over. It was why she'd decided on the spot to trust Rhodopis and Agnodice- especially Rhodopis, to protect and accurately communicate with Rhais.
Celine would rather scare herself silly for a few weeks- or months- in a tight space than lose more than half of everyone she cared about almost at once.
But she did have to know one more thing. Celine knew better than to ask Max if she could go into battle. That would undoubtedly be stupid on both their parts, since she had had no weapon training whatsoever. But women who weren't enlisted weren't allowed to travel with the army, either. That probably meant she'd have only one place to go- his tent. She shivered with pleasure at the thought of what might- eventually- be able to happen there, but surely she thought that Max himself had to realize the risk involved.
“You'd be willing to risk being reprimanded...for me?” The thought brought tears to her eyes again, but sweet ones that were almost healing.
So he actually probably did care about her peace of mind- now that he knew everything. To Celine, being truly strong meant also being in as peaceful a state of mind as possible, though even she knew the strongest person in all of Greece probably worried at times. Strength surely did not come without danger- but Celine had lost so much that it seemed that at the times she could find it, only the peace of safety with her family and friends was what made her able to go on living at all.
“You're absolutely sure of that?” she whispered, cupping his jaw again so he'd presumably have to look at her.

Maximus felt like he was wondering in the Underworld, the realm ruled by Hades where Demons infest the land looking on and taunting Maximus as he walked past them blankly staring at the road ahead. Time seemed to stop in the Underworld with no end, no purpose. All his life, Maximus had little doubt who he was. Sure he wondered about his curse and what his parents did for Poseidon to curse him. Sure Maximus was curious about his Bedoan past and why his ancestors had to leave Africa to seek refuge in Colchis.
But for a moment, the mysteries that plagued Maximus seemed small compared to what he was having with Celine. She poured her heart and soul out to Maximus and he said that he knew he loved her. But Maximus never told her how he felt about Celine probably because he subconsciously buried it deep inside him to the point where whatever the answer he had forgotten in the sea of emotions.
Perhaps it was forgotten the moment that he laid eyes on Nethis during his investigation all those years ago. Maybe the moment that Maximus knew about Celine's love was the time that he disciplined himself to plaguing his inner doubts. Whatever the case, the first words that came from Maximus' mouth was that he knew about it. Now Maximus himself was a man with no experience with love but he knew that was NOT how to respond a girl who confessed her love.
Celine held all this emotion for Maximus and all he can say was that he knew? What does that do to the honorable and dutiful image that Maximus built for himself? He pretty much shattered it being so tactless. Maximus' entire body tensed up bracing for Celine's response. She was rarely angry but when she was it was equivalent of a Volcano erupting, destroying everything in its path. However instead of rage, Maximus saw a wink and honeyed, joking words by Celine.
The young man was confused, did she take this as a joke? Explaining the stories about the Gods like this? Perhaps he misread the situation..... again. It was pretty much what his father who was drunk at that time said that war was more predictable than women. Once again, Maximus was rendered speechless when Celine spoke squeezing his hands in the process. He can only reach out and wipe away the fresh tears that came from her eyes with his thumb. Never before had he felt so useless.
To be honest, Maximus didn't want Celine to come with him it was way too dangerous and he could be demoted, whipped and be discharged if caught doing so. There was little to gain from this and a lot to lose for both of them, yet Celine continued to talk excitedly about leaving her family and taking care of her brother who was serving under Maximus. It wasn't like Celine to leave her family especially Rhais. Then again there was nothing usual about this situation.
Maximus sighed and focused on Celine's smile showing off her stark white teeth. How she managed to maintain them was a mystery to him, but Maximus still struggled saying anything right now. He wanted to tell Celine that this was a bad idea that she'll likely be killed or worse. But the blasted words aren't forming! What is wrong with him?!
“You will find me in Hermes' wings. Please remember that.”
Wait? What?! Hermes' resting place?! What was Celine talking about?! Usually Basil talks in riddles! What is Celine doing?! Normally she wouldn't attempt a risky move such as this! She was always careful and calculating, Maximus wanted to call it off so badly. He opened his mouth to beg, to plead but only his breath would leave his mouth.
“You'd be willing to risk being reprimanded...for me?”
“Celine.....” Maximus finally said. “I don't know what to know any more.”
“You're absolutely sure of that?”
“I don't know!” Maximus uttered enjoying the Celine's gentle touch on his cheek. “I just want to my mind to be focused on this war and leading troops into battle and staying alive and finding my roots! But it's all messed up! I don't know Celine! My mind is messed up and I can't deal with this! Why now?!”
The words spilled out like waterfall crashing onto the river. What started as a simple goodbye turned into a nightmare. Maximus had Nethis on one shoulder and Celine on the other. There he was in the middle trying to seek answers during a war. “All I know,” Maximus said. “Is that I need you Celine. I need you beside me to figure all this out because the moment I set sail, I feel like I'm going to lose myself and I can't afford that to happen as a leader of a small army.”
Maximus leaned in an gave Celine an awkward hug taking in the softness of her hair and rubbing her exposed back. “Celine,” he said. “I need to go back to my men. Please..... I just need to process this.”
The young man then turned on his heel and disappeared into the crowd.

Maximus leaned in an gave Celine an awkward hug taking in the softness of her hair and rubbing her exposed back. “Celine,” he said. “I need to go back to my men. Please..... I just need to process this.”
The young man then turned on his heel and disappeared into the crowd.

"I think I know what you mean by possibly losing yourself, because I think I have too, knowing that everyone in Greece has to be on the alert because of the war in the first place, and that's bringing back memories whether I want it to or not even if they don't usually torture me quite so much anymore," admitted Celine. "But in a way,it's a comfort that we both need each other, because it means neither of us feels we can be alone. And now we won't be. Remember- Hermes' wings. I hate to be cryptic, but I'll never have time otherwise to-"
And then he was gone, leaving her in the middle of a sentence. He seemed agitated and saying that he needed her, but that he also needed time to process this. Even though he had hugged her before he left, she still could not quite feel at ease with the way they'd parted.
Her brow furrowed in confusion. As intelligent as Celine was, even she was shocked by the intensity and suddenness of her own confession. She could understand his reaction, to an extent.
But did Max need time to process the fact that he'd said he needed her, or to process her confession of love for himself?
Perhaps the answer was both. But Celine still wished that he hadn't left her hanging. It made her tense to not know where things stood. She hoped he wasn't angry with her. It was just that the worry of possibly never seeing him again and the thought of all of her friends leaving at once had made her desperate. Perhaps, even if only subconsciously, she had felt the need to have control over something, at least.
The tension she felt at having the situation unresolved at least for lack of a better description fueled her energy, though, and as Max turned his back, she, too, searched for the ship that would take her to Taengea.
They were taking different ships and perhaps also slightly different routes- she didn't know about that part. But they'd be together soon, and she hoped she'd be able to explain her outburst of love in a way that would help them both find peace.
