If Celine never saw another man betting again, she wouldn’t care one bit. The truth was, for an eleven year old, these events were usually about as exciting as watching bread bake, but without the good smell. Besides that, when these kinds of events did get interesting, it wasn’t the type of excitement she preferred, for it often ended in someone’s injury or death. She sat up taller in her seat as her father put a pile of coins in front of a friend of his so they could decide how much to bet, but she soon grew bored, as usual. What was exciting about money changing hands unless it went from someone else’s hands to yours?
She had never done what she was about to do before, but she didn’t really care at the moment, being something of an adventurous sort of girl anyway. Though she knew she really shouldn’t, Celine left her seat when she was sure that her father’s back was going to be turned for awhile. The tournament hadn’t started yet, anyway, so maybe now would be the best time to do what she wanted.
But dare she? Celine’s stomach dropped and began to quiver with a combination of unease and extreme excitement, and although at first her trembling made it hard to walk, she dared to head toward the door where the contestants would enter. She wasn’t even sure people were allowed back here. But a weird combination of curiosity and a need to put some excitement back into her life- and maybe regain a little of the bravery she'd lost last year- had brought her to this point. Besides, if she got in trouble, all she'd probably have to do would be to point out that it's not like he might not have done the same thing at her age. Parents could be weird sometimes, but Celine felt like her father understood her more than most fathers she knew understood their daughters.
She saw a boy who looked about her own age then who she thought was headed in the same direction, and she gasped and grinned. Now she wouldn’t be alone. She’d likely have an escort of sorts, and maybe that would make it easier to explain to her parents later.
“What are you doing back here?” she whispered loudly, hoping the boy would hear her. Her voice and face both had a combination of shock and equal amusement in them. Maybe she was just shocked- and happy- that another child seemed to have the same idea. “My name is Celine. What’s yours?”

Maximus closed his eyes trying to regain his focus “remember what Grandfather taught you,” he murmured to himself trying to hear the area around him. The faint sounds of swords colliding against one another followed by a loud roar from the audience outside of the arena. Maximus' Grandfather: Alexei was the first person in his family to reach the rank of Lieutanant. He served faithfully and dutifully earning high marks eventually retiring as a commander. When it wasn't Maximus' father teaching him the ways of being soldier, the task fell on Alexi. Maximus hated being taught by his Grandfather, even though his father was always stern with him, Grandfather was worse.
He had an Eagle's eye constantly looking for any weakness Maximus shown. Armed with an oak stick if Maximus made a mistake with his sword training or was a little slow on his runs, then he would feel the sharp strike from his Grandfather. It left Maximus hardly able to breathe as though his lungs has punctured by a spear. Tears rolled out from Maximus' eyes as he saw the stoic face of his Grandfather. “Get up!” he would say sharply. “A Colchian Soldier must be able to endure a tremendous amount of pain. Look at you! Flat on your back! The enemy will not hesitate to gut you and leave you dying in a pool of your own blood and intensities.”
Maximus remembered himself crying only to receive another hit by his Grandfather this time to the knee. “No crying!” he bellowed. “Colchian Soldiers do not cry! Do you want to be like my father's father? I think not!” Considering Maximus' family was one of the newer people in Colchis, they have yet to look like the common Colchain despite having a family that produced fiercely loyal soldiers.
“No tears,” Maximus said. Grandfather may be harsh but he spoke the truth, Colchian soldiers do not cry and they do not give up. From since he remembers, Maximus wanted to be the very best Colchian Soldier in the world. He wanted his name to be imprinted with the all time Colchian greats. Death was the greatest glory a Colchian Soldier can achieve but his father advised not to rush in to find death. “A meaningful death is more impactful,” his father told him. “But take care not to seek it when your time comes, it comes but always remember your duty.”
This is why Maximus wanted to enter the tournament, he wanted to test himself. Since he was six years old, all Maximus' routine was to be a soldier. Everything else came second, he was bigger, faster and stronger than his peers. But he wanted to prove to his family that he can be the very best.
Maximus took out his Xiphos was about to begin practicing until a girl's voice made him jump. “Aaah!” the young man dropped his Xiphos as it landed flat onto the ground dust surrounding. “Oh no!” he moaned. “I dropped it again! It's good thing my father isn't here to see that or he would've killed me!” The boy craned his head to see who was talking to him.
“A girl?” Maximus said aloud. “I mean sorry! I was just practicing for the tournament!” The girl introduced herself as Celine, she was around Maximus' age and looked curious or happy he couldn't tell.
“My name is Maximus!” Maximus said wiping the dust off his blade. “And you're looking at the next great Colchian soldier! Watch while I enter the tourney and beat my opponents to a bloody pulp!”

“You're... you're going to...” Celine couldn't finish the sentence, leaving her mouth hanging open. She gulped and tried again. “I-I mean....wow!” No boy she had known in Taengea would ever be half so... brave? Stupid? Gutsy? All of those words? Talkative though she sometimes was, this piece of news had her speechless in awe of the boy.
It really was going to be a new adventure living in Colchis. Not that Celine hadn’t been to Colchis to visit before, but she’d been born and lived in Taengea until she was ten.
Then, last year, the fire had taken everything, including their home and half of her sister Rhais’ hearing. It had taken some time to get ready to move, and she had just turned eleven a few months before they left Taengea. Now, she was just trying to make something good of her new life.
Maybe, making something good of her life here could include a friend like this boy. Celine thought of herself as brave- or had until the fire. But she couldn’t quite believe she was going to watch someone who looked about her own age fight in a tournament. But now it might even mean that watching her father bet might be more fun. She grinned. “Okay, well, then, good luck I guess.” She guessed that would be more polite than telling someone not to die- though that was what she really wanted to do. She liked this boy already, even though they’d known each other only long enough to tell each other their names.
“Um… Do you want to kiss my hand? For luck, I mean?” Her parents sometimes kissed for luck when her father had to go somewhere he wasn’t able to take his family. “You don’t have to if you think it’s gross,” she added. “I just…thought it was what people did. It’s a court thing, I think. I’m from Acaris. My father works for the Master Informer of Taengea,” she added, as if that would explain why she’d suggested a kiss for luck. She didn't really want to- she found it awkward being touched by strangers- but she thought she'd be avoiding her duty as a daughter of a respected- even if not noble- ambassador if she didn't at least offer, and tolerate it if it turned out he wanted to.
Whether she was really supposed to see it or not, Celine had seen a few people kiss at court events. Usually it was the man kissing the lady’s hand.
“Then I’ll leave right after, and be watching,” she whispered. She hopped on one foot in impatience, not sure how much time he’d have to decide, and not wanting to get knocked over if the tournament started sooner than expected and she had to make a lightning-fast escape. "But we live in Laconia now, if you'd like to talk more," she added bravely. Perhaps with a friend, her heart would begin to heal.

It took Maximus a bit to understand Celine's reaction. Was she excited for Maximus? Afraid for him? Both? If there was thing that Maximus struggled during his training, it was reading his opponent. “You must understand what your opponent is about to do!” His father would bark at Maximus. “Study his body, his face especially his eyes! If you can see the fear in them then you have the opportunity to strike.”
Maximus frowned getting closer to Celine scratching smooth, dark skin. The young man leaned forward getting a look at her brown eyes. Maximus had brown eyes as well but they were darker to the point that it was black. The boy squinted trying to get a feel for what Celine was saying but was failing miserably. “I'm just trying to take a good look at your eyes!” Maximus said. “It seems that you do believe in me!”
It was a guess, but Celine seemed to be honest. Maximus jumped for joy lifting his fist high in the air. “My parents think I'm not ready to take on the men in this tournament. But I came from a family soldiers in the great Laconia! Every man in my family has done a great deal in battle and I want to continue the tradition starting with this tournament!”
Maximus then paused when Celine offered Maximus to kiss her hand. Well that was weird, then again if there was one thing Maximus learned about girls was that they were weird. Except for Adelpha, she wasn't like all the other girls. But still Maximus wondered why do all girls want boys to kiss them so much? Maybe Basil was right, all girls are Madusas in disguise. However Celine seemed genuine and the best Gladiators in history did have a girl on his side to cheer them on in hand them their favors.
“OF COURSE!” Maximus said sticking his Xiphos on to the ground. It was a bad habit to do so and Maximus was scolded multiple times by his father and grandfather not to do it but you old habits, they die hard. “They say when you earn a maiden's favor, the Gods give you tons of energy!”
It was going to be weird but Maximus wanted the Gods favor. A gladiator and his lady facing all odds what a story! “It's like in the storybooks!” Maximus said leaning down, closing his eyes tight and kissing Celine's hand passionately.
“WOW!” Maximus said as soon as he released his lips from Celine's hand. “You smell very pretty! Like fresh cut spring flowers! I CAN FEEL THE ENERGY FROM YOU RIGHT NOW!”
Maximus felt a tingling sensation throughout his body. Celine's favor was working! Her favor coursing through his veins making his heart beat a little faster and the his mind sharper. Who was this girl? She was amazing! “It feels so.... amazing!” Maximus said holding Celine's hand tightly. “I like you Celine you're a great source of energy!”
The boy then smiled. “Come with me!” he said. “You know the stories say that a Gladiator always has his lady by his side cheering him on and giving him favors! I need all the support I can get! We will be an unstoppable team! Me the warrior and you the maiden who gives me emotional energy! We achieve glory together! It will be the best thing ever!”

Celine really thought the boy's parents were probably right, but about half of that was the new Celine talking- the one who had just moved here. The old Celine, the one whom she was last year, the one that still existed even if only halfway, was cheering him on, and if he could be so brave about this, she could too. She hated to be touched by strangers in general, and had only offered for the boy to kiss her hand because she thought that was what a lady was supposed to do for a gladiator. But the part of her that liked him already wanted to keep holding his hand just as much as the part of her that was still nervous wanted to take her hand back and wipe it on her chiton. Her heart fluttered in her chest and she took a careful breath, trying to stop it, her other hand over her heart.
“You want me to go with you? I-I mean, in front of everyone? Won't I be trampled by the other person- the one you're trying to fight?” She was afraid of that. She couldn't help but feel that in situations like that, it was usually best to try to be careful. Maybe if she had known him her whole life, her stomach and legs would stop shaking right now, though she was trying to hide the fact that they were. “I mean, it's not like you can protect me if you're trying to watch out for your opponent's next move...right?” She hesitated, but she was actually trying to show a balance of smarts and caution, not fear, even though the fact that she stuttered a little might make it seem like the opposite was actually true.
She had simply never thought about going with him. “What stories have you been reading?” she asked him point blank. “Maybe my parents never told me the part where the lady goes with the man to battle,” she said, smart enough by now to realize that even her parents- who tried to be as open as possible with their children- might not tell her everything.
“But maybe if you think it's okay, then it actually might be,” she said, still trying to clearly make a choice. “Hmmm.”
Maximus might know more than Celine about whether it was safe for her to be with him in the arena since he was the one who was going to enter the tournament. Her father would probably punish her, but if she could regain some of the part of herself that was still brave, it might be worth it.
She couldn't help giggling when he said she smelled like fresh cut flowers and said how great a source of energy she was. Boys! Not that she felt she had time for them, since Rhais had gotten hurt in the fire. She was still grinning though. “Um... you're sure I'll be okay?” she asked one more time.
She suddenly realized that in all this time, she still hadn't let go of his hand, and that was a shock in itself. Wow! What was happening to her? She tried to be friendly, but she was usually so touchy around strangers that sometimes she felt like people didn't see that she was trying.
Somehow, she wanted this boy to know she was trying now.

Somehow, she wanted this boy to know she was trying now.
Maximus raised an eyebrow when Celine told him that she was going to be close to him during the melee. Where did she hear that?! If anything, a girl should be no where near the fight it is where people prove their manhood and achieve endless glory! Still the boy was insulted that Celine would say he wouldn't be able to protect her during a fight! “What?!” Maximus shouted jumping back a bit still holding Celine's hand. “I've been training to be a soldier since I was six years old! The first thing I was taught was that a soldier's duty is to protect the people who can't defend themselves.”
He took his father's teachings to heart. While Maximus wants to attain glory more than ever, he hadn't forgotten that a soldier protects other. “I can protect you Celine!” Maximus shouted placing his other hand on hers. “I will protect you on my honor as a contender of this arena and a future soldier! Every life in Colchis is precious to me! Especially yours my friend!”
The boy closed his eyes and smelt the air his nostrils expanding a bit. It was a hot day in the usually cold Colchis. Maximus was thankful for that, the Gods created the perfect weather for this glorious day. Perhaps they wanted to get a good view of the action. Maybe Ares wanted to bless people who wanted to fight. “There were plenty of stories of gladiators keeping their women close for good luck!” Maximus said staring into Celine's eyes almost in an excited voice.
“You don't HAVE to be close to me!” Maximus said trying to quell his excitement. It was great to have a girl cheering him on lending him energy during the fight but they barely know each other. Still it would be nice to have someone his age giving him support. His parents surely didn't!
“I'm sure no other competitor has their woman besides them!” Maximus declared to Celine. “You're my secret weapon Celine! When we're together nothing will stop us!”
It was then Maximus dragged Celine to the entrance where it was announced that he had to strip to his undergarments. “Aww that stinks!” He snorted. “Well I guess we have to in order to appease the Gods! I may be skinny but thanks to kissing your hand Celine I feel powerful. Like I have the strength of Hercules! I feel I can take everyone on!”

"Okay, if you're sure. And you'd better be really sure." Still nervous, Celine bit her lip, but though her palms had turned clammy, she didn't let go of Maximus' hand, even if she was worried it was gross.
The next part did shock her, though, and her stomach started quivering again, this time from a little bit of dread. Her father was going to punish her! She wasn't even sure it was good behavior- let alone accepted- for someone from an ambassador's family to be practically naked in front of a big crowd. "Excuse me? We have to strip down to our underwear? You mean me too?" Otherwise, Celine wondered who the other person- or being- in the word 'we' was. "Unless you have a mouse in your pocket, like my father would say." Suddenly, she was more curious about this boy than was probably normal for a first meeting. The mouse comment had just been an expression her father used sometimes, but suddenly she just came right out and asked, "Do you have any pets? I have a chestnut-colored colt! His name is Apostolos!" The name meant 'messenger' and was a tribute to Hermes, whom she had picked as her patron god.
But back to her problem. After he answered the question about whether he had any pets- which she'd used partly to take her mind off her shock at the idea of getting undressed in front of a crowd- she would think a little more about whether or not to actually do it.
I hope he doesn't mean I have to strip, too. My father would be...I'm not sure what. she thought. Thinking about the weird mix of shock, anger, and disappointment she expected was enough to make her head ache.

Though Maximus can understand Celine's caution, he was already annoyed. He made a promise that he will protect Celine no matter what. Which part did she did not get? "Celine," Maximus said his tone almost whining. "I've been trained to be a legendary soldier since I was six! I've learned tricks that most of these don't know!"
The boy gripped Celine's hand which were starting to become sweaty but Maximus didn't mind, it felt soft and smooth compared to the callused hands he developed throughout the years. As they entered the hallway, Maximus looked down at his clothing and sighed. "I think he meant that only the competitors will have to remove their clothes," he said. "You'll be fine Celine! I've been fighting in the nude multiple times. So this is nothing new!"
Maximus was then surprised when Celine asked if he had any pets. He stared at her, a blank look on his face. "I do not have a pet," he said his eyes staring at the stone floor. "My father forbade me from having pets, he said I'll have an attachment."
He remembered wanting a black puppy that his neighbor was selling when he was eight years old. The puppy was energetic like Maximus as his stubby tail wagged back and forth greeting him. Adonis on the other hand yelled at Maximus to come at his side, the puppy squeaked in terror running away from him. Maximus remembered being teary eyed as his father lectured him on how not to get attached.
"Your first duty is to your family!" he yelled at Maximus. "Then Colchis and then your eventual wife! Focus on them and only them!"
"Family and Colchis must come first," Maximus said to Celine. "Always but I can make room for you! Father wouldn't know!"
The two children continued to walk towards the waiting room, surrounding them were warriors bigger and stronger than Maximus sharpening their swords or wrestling one another. Oh how Maximus wanted to join them. "I mean Celine, we met but I care for you a lot!" he said. "You gave me lots of energy! Something I never felt before!"

"Oh...." She blushed for so many reasons. Embarrassment at not realizing she wasn't expected to strip was one. The weird feeling that her question about pets had made him sad was another. Being somewhat of an overthinker- though grown-ups might call it 'philosophy,' at least at times, confusion was another reason she blushed, and her brow furrowed as she thought. "I don't get it, though. How does he expect you to care about Colchis if there's nothing you like there enough to want to fight hard enough to keep it safe?"
Somehow, the question about pets had helped her to make her decision. She was going to watch near him. He seemed so sad and lonely. And then he said he would make room for her, too. Well, then, if someone who didn't want to get caught having attachments was brave enough to make friends with her, why should she be afraid of at least trying to rebuild her life, if only slowly?
"Okay. I won't strip, but I'll stay. And since we're friends now, if you live close, I'll let you come see Apostolos any time you want and you can pet him. He's not big enough to ride yet, but my father says he will be in another year!"
The fire should have made Celine shy and sad and uncertain around other people, even other children. It still had, but this boy was so... Celine couldn't come up with a word that fit what she had seen about him. He seemed to have such a bright, shiny personality (if you could call personalities shiny)that she felt would make almost anyone want to be friends with someone like him. Maybe he was giving her back a little of the joy she seemed to have lost when the fire happened.
"Besides..." she added, speaking of his father not knowing about their friendship. "What's better than a secret?" Secrets were fun and exciting, and a little bit daring, and Celine thought the best kind of secret was one shared with a friend- even if the fire had made her a little afraid of having friends, in the sense that she could lose these new friends, too.
Today, she wouldn't think about that, though. Today she was only going to remember that she nowhad a friend in Colchis. It was somehow enough to make her smile for real for the first time in a long time.
