It had been a month since Kyros had tried to get in touch with his Brothers. A month since the attempt on his life, that could only have come from his master. A month since the man's entire world had shifted, forever. Fotios Leventi had spared his life that day. But Kyros wasn't so sure he wasn't better off dead anyways. With the Creed after him, it was only a matter of time before his life was forfeit anyways. Fotios could claim he could protect Kyros until he was blue in the face, but the former Shadow Walker wasn't so sure he could ever fully believe him. Kyros had trained with the Creed. Knew how they worked, how deadly they were. How effective. Kyros would never feel completely safe in Taengea. But he was stuck here... for now.
At least his injuries were finally healed. And the skirmish he'd had a couple weeks ago was further testament to the fact that he was finally back at full strength. Kyros smiled to himself as he walked the streets on the richest section of the city. Fotios was not going to be likely to pay him well enough, fast enough, to allow Kyros to flee Taengea any time soon. Why would he? He had a trained Drowned One in his pocket now, a commodity many would like to be able to hold, Kyros was sure. He needed to get out of this Kingdom. Go to Colchis, or Athenia. Maybe even Lands Afar. Certainly not Egypt, where the Shade's reach was strong. Kyros would need money to do this. And who better to provide that coin than the wealthy he despised?
Today was just a scouting mission. Getting a feel for the routines of the people, deciding which estates would be easiest to break into. Maybe even the Leventi home itself? This thought had just passed through the Creed fugitive's mind when his silent feet were brought to a halt just outside the grounds of the university of the arts. The sound that had stopped him was that of a harp string. Kyros had heard a lyre played before, and he had not been all that impressed with it the performance. But this... it tugged at something inside him with it's incredibly sweet notes. Curious, Kyros changed his course and slipped onto the grounds. Quickly and silently as a shadow, he followed the melody to a somewhat secluded area of the schools grounds...

It was a nice day out, Kalli could tell with the feel of the warm sun against her shoulders while a breeze coiled through the air like a cat wanting attention as it curled around someone. Normally down around her shoulders, Kalliope's bright blonde hair was up off her shoulders in several intricate braids, the fuss that was made over if her hair is up or down that morning had Kalliope feeling almost foolish as the servant girl helped her style it. The chiton she wore was light, moving easily about her legs when she moved, the color unknown other than a light blue that she was told.
Times like this, Kalli liked to let her imagination run with her over the colors and how she remembered them. Light blue with a mix of darker tones like the ocean waters? A light blue that was closer to white like a puff of clouds in the early morning light? Or was it the color of the sky on a clear day? After being guided to a bench that was partially shaded but still in the warm sunlight, Kalliope absentmindedly pulled at the cords on her harp, humming along as she played a random tune.

Kyros moved so smoothly and swiftly along the wall in search of the playing harp, that he seemed barely a shadow as he passed. He finally spotted the where the music was coming from, his keen hearing having picked out the sounds from the other players on the grounds with ease. The blonde woman was sitting on a bench, half shaded by a nearby tree with low hanging branches. He smiled wickedly, having located the source, and easily leaped into the higher branches of the tree from the wall. He landed silently, with just the slightest rustle of leaves, no more than a bird or other small creature would make by moving through the branches. Kyros carefully picked his way about halfway down the tree, until he was able to couch low and have a clear view of the player without being seen too readily.
His grey eyes watched her fingers pluck at the strings, her movements so casual yet so graceful. The notes washed over him, like cool water on a hot day. She seemed to not pay any mind to the happening around her, seemed as engrossed in what she was doing as he was in watching her. He carefully, silently, lowered himself down another branch, and walked along it like a tight rope until he was nearly overhead.

Kalli was playing a tune at random, singing softly of a song from her memories while thinking of one of the tasks her tutor assigned the class to do,
"Soft comes the hush of eventide And songbirds hide In limbs of budded trees To bid farewell to setting sun With lullabies they've been singing Each night for centuries.
With a soft sigh, the memories of painting and watching the setting sun filled her mind. It was like a nightmare and a wish all rolled into one, teasing her with something she could never have again unless the gods above blessed her so. It was enough to make someone cry, but Kalli just shook her head at the memories. From up above her, Kalli could hear the leaves rustling, maybe a bird had come to listen? At that thought, she would oblige and continue.
"I miss the colors in your blending light Oh sun above, shining so bright The colors that meld and bled with hues In darkness now, is my new muse In the shadows, my light hides In the darkness where all colors bleed and die.
It was a song of loss, a song of pain, mixed with the bittersweet memories of what once was. It was a personal song that she felt deep within her heart.

Satisfied that he'd found the source of the wonderful string music, Kyros was just about to set back out on his original mission for the day when the woman started to sing. He stopped, already half turned in preparation to leap back to the wall, frozen as the words reached his ears. A vague and fogged memory - a dream really - drifted through the recesses of his mind, bringing up something in him that he couldn't quite name. He frowned, trying to bring the thoughts more firmly into his mind, but the effort nearly made him swoon. Where have I heard that melody before?
The leaves rustled slightly as Kyros shifted his feet and lowered himself to sit on the branch, having lost interest in returning to his scouting mission just now. It wasn't like the nobles of the city were going to let go of their treasures any time soon. He could investigate the houses later. He let one leg hang free from the branch while the other remained bent with his foot on the branch so that his leg formed an upright triangle, his arm casually draped over his knee. He continued to watch the woman below him. And his intrigue only grew as she continued her song. The words alone were curious, but the tone of her voice... it pulled at something inside him. At what? He couldn't place it. Kyros wasn't the sort of man to be in touch with his feelings. He didn't even really understand the feelings of others all that much. He could recognize emotions on others. But he had a hard time relating to them. It hadn't been a skill he'd needed until recently.

'Lost and alone, without Apollo's light In the dark the world will hide, giving me a fright. No one knows, no one sees The dark and emptiness that now surrounds the trees. Shadows fall and take the light Giving those an eternal night.
Kalliope was finding words for the pain that she felt, the despair that filled her when she thinks about the beautiful things that she no longer could see. A pause in her singing had Kalliope shaking her head as she cursed herself and her tutor. "Kèpfos! Stupid stupid girl. An assignment about pain, and here you are wallowing. Arg!"
Placing the harp on her lap, Kalliope reached for her bag so she could write down the words to the song she just created, knowing that even if sloppily written her tutor would want to read it. Thank the gods that she knew how to write before she went blind. Her hand came into contact with the bag, accidentally knocking it over to the ground. At that moment, Kalli wanted to scream out her frustrations as she moved from the bench to the ground, keeping her harp close as she blindly searched for her stuff.

So much sadness in those words, evident even to the normally oblivious Kyros. He'd closed his eyes, listening to her melodic voice and skilled fingers create a harmony he'd never really heard before. It resonated within him. That melancholy melody. He had relaxed so much in his precarious perch above her that he didn't fully realize she'd stopped playing until she'd practically yelled out in frustration. His eyes snapped open and he peered down to see the young woman reaching for her dropped bag. No... no reaching. He frowned deeply and leaned forward, his bent leg coming down to hang next to his other dangling leg. She was feeling the ground as if she couldn't see the bag just a few feet in front of her! Was she blind? Curious to find out - too curious perhaps - Kyros glanced around to be sure no one else was close enough to take notice. Then he lightly dropped from the tree, landing on the bench she'd been using with barely a whisper and, never breaking stride, leaped over the bent woman to land silently next to her bag. He knelt down on one knee, his eyes on her face, not daring to breath this close to her. She did not look at him. She must be blind. He let out a slow shallow breath, reached a hand fro her bag and brought it closer to her, leaving it on the ground where her frantically searching fingers would find it sooner.

Kalli was on the verge of tears in her frustration, angry with herself that she knocked her bag over and now can not seem to find it. Angry that she could not even pick up her bag off the floor without making herself look like a fool. With her knees under her and her harp on her lap, she felt around for the bag.
It had to be around there somewhere, right? She heard it fall, but it didn't sound like it fell that far away, so where was it?! The breeze above her had the leaves whisper and dance as she blindly reached out for her bad, hoping and praying to any god who would listen that it did not open and her papers were now blowing away as well. Kalliope had no idea someone else was nearby, right in front of her watching her scramble around. If they looked at her face, they would see her blue-green eyes clouded over and look almost like frost coated over her vision.
With her head up as she felt around, the wind brought a new message for her, something almost exotic smelling that danced through the air and surrounding her. Was someone nearby? Kalliope paused as she took a breath in through her nose, the air smelling almost woody but richer; not quite like sandalwood but close. "Is someone there?" A moment, and right as her hand hit her bag suddenly. "If someone is there, please say something? Was someone there?

By the looks of her eyes, the girl was most decidedly blind, even if her movements had not given her away. He tilted his head as he watched her, breathing a little easier now that he knew she couldn't see him. His eyes widened and he stiffened though, when she inquired if someone was there. How had she known? Kyros had never actually been around anyone that was blinded, he had no idea they could smell and feel things better than others. Her melodic voice, and oh was it ever musical, begged for whoever was there to speak. Kyros took a breath and opened his mouth and nearly answered that call. He caught himself though, just in time. He swallowed and shook his head at himself. What a fool. One pretty voice and he's become an idiot. He licked his lips, wanting deep down to let her know he was there. To compliment her musical skills. But he didn't really know how to do that, complimenting. He also still wasn't entirely comfortable with speaking to people unless he had to. His eyes dropped to the small harp in her lap. He carefully reached a hand out and plucked a single string without ever touching her. Then he quickly pulled back suddenly questioning his sanity. That single note that sounded could have been cause by her bumping it right?

By the looks of her eyes, the girl was most decidedly blind, even if her movements had not given her away. He tilted his head as he watched her, breathing a little easier now that he knew she couldn't see him. His eyes widened and he stiffened though, when she inquired if someone was there. A soft breath right in front of her drew her attention as if a cat heard the softest of mouse squeaks, looking in the direction of where the person possibly was. Still unsure, she called out again. "Is anyone there? Please say something, I promise I won't bite."
Suddenly, she was self-conscious at the thought of someone being there and not wanting to talk to her because she was different. Disabled and not in perfect condition, not many wanted to deal with her until they heard her sing. Still no reply, maybe she imagined it? The scent was still there in the air, but the breeze could be funny like that when carrying smells.
Now she was sure she imagined it, the silence starting to get to her, so she just decided to speak to no one in particular. "Well, if you are one of the gods, I hope my singing didn't offend you. If a person is listening, some company would be nice. No one, outside my friend, talks with me much."
Pulling her bag to her, Kalliope was just placing it on the bench behind her, when her harp string sang out. She felt the weight shift just slightly on her lap right before the note sounded, making her jump. "You ARE still there! Did you like my harp music? Can you speak? Or are you like me, but you can not speak, while I can not see?" Reaching out, she wondered if she would find out if someone was really there, or were the gods playing a mean trick on her and making her lose her sanity as well?

'...No one, outside my friend, talks with me much.'
Perhaps that phrase, so tinged in disappointment, had been what prompted Kyros to reach out and pluck the harp string. Honestly he wasn't sure, and he would never really figure that out.
'You ARE still there! Did you like my harp music? Can you speak? Or are you like me, but you can not speak, while I can not see?'
Skatá! He had not touched her! How did she know he'd been the one to pluck it! His chest heaved as his breathing picked up. Perhaps her keen ears would be able to pick up the slight sounds of his panicked breathing. Perhaps not. Either way he had a choice to make now. Did he dare answer her. Did he dare speak and give himself away completely? Perhaps...perhaps he could take advantage of her question as to whether he could speak at all. He bit his lip, and furrowed his brows as he pondered this, looking around to be sure they were remained alone in this area of the university grounds. He did not belong here, and he was sure if someone came near they would realize this. And almost without his brain commanding it to happen, he reached out again to pluck a single string on her lyre. He did not jump away this time. But he did not leave his hand within her reach either. If he did not allow her to touch him, to know exactly where he was, then it would make escaping easier if someone happened to wonder their way.

Kalliope was surprised when her lyre cord was pulled again, so this person WAS there. She didn't imagine it! With a smile that could have lit up a room as bright as if the sun appeared in the sky, she couldn't wait to ask more questions and possibly make a friend. "So you are like me, but can't speak, that must be hard on you. If you would like, you could use my lyre to talk with me?" Now she was just reaching for strings, both figuratively and literally, for all she knew he wouldn't want anything to do with her, and yet there she was trying so hard.
"You could pull the string once for no and twice for yes if you would like. Would you like to try that way?" Gently she grabbed her most precious possession and leaned it against her legs, a place that could be easier reached without having to possibly be uncomfortable with reaching too far. "Do you want to talk with me?" Kalliope waited, almost holding her breath, for the person's response.

Kyros was still questioning his own sanity for what he'd just done. But then she smiled, and his breath caught in his throat and he suddenly craved to see that smile. He swallowed. There was something wrong with him. He should not have traipsed in here looking for the source of the enticing music she'd been playing, For now he couldn't seem to make himself walk away. He remained there with her, knelt in the grass, under the cool shade of the tree. She offered a solution to communicating with her, one where he did not have to speak. Albeit it was because she thought he couldn't speak. Semantics, really.
'Do you want to talk with me?'
He swallowed and shifted closer to her so he could reach the strings of her instrument more easily. I shouldn't. I should leave now. Before this gets even more out of hand. But the blonde seemed so happy to have someone here to talk to! That smile had done something to him. How could he walk away just now? Perhaps he could spare a little time... He shifted his weight to pull his feet out from under himself, folded and bent his legs before him. He reached out a hand to her reposition lyre, and plucked the string twice. Yes.

Kalliope was silent as she waited for a response, listening to the sounds of something shift softly before her lyre played a note, twice. So the person DID want to talk with her, and it was someone like her. She wondered if they were just as lonely as she was. Sure, she had Xene for her friend and those in the palace, but sometimes it felt like only Xene was her only friend. That wasn't a bad thing either, but with her being so busy and not needing her very often, Kalliope was often left to her own devices.
Hearing that note, Kalliope was smiling again, "Thank you. Are you a student here at the university?" She waited for their answer before continuing. I wish I could ask you for your name. She wished she could see them, talk, just learn more about them.

That smile again lit up her face, and it struck him just how gorgeous she was. He smirked, a crooked lazy smile, and his grey eyes flared as he watched her. Was he a student? No. He plucked the string once, still careful not to brush against her. He could have lied and said he was. It would have been less suspicious that he was here, on the grounds, at a place he did not attend. At this thought he glanced around to be sure no one was coming this way. Satisfied that he was safe for now, he turned his attention back to the girl before him - keeping alert for movement or sounds that would indicate he was about to be discovered - as she said she wished she could learn his name. His name was a farce anyway, he was just as happy with this arrangement. The silence. The anonymity. It was something he was much more accustomed to.
He did wish he could ask her to continue playing. To sing with that soothing voice as she had before. But how without actually speaking? For she could not see him if he gestured to her lyre. He did not think this through to completion. He dropped his chin into his hand, his elbow on his knee as he pondered how to ask her to resume her music playing.
