Nia listened with half a smile as Ana relayed the tale of her and Hena’s meeting, well able to imagine her brother’s charm. She’d witnessed his style of wooing on many occasions before; with as much time as they spent in taverns and opium dens, it was not unusual for them to leave with another at the night’s end. What was unusual this time, though—the one he wooed was still around.
As Ana spoke, it was obvious that the things she said were true. There was genuine feeling in her voice, drugged or not, and it was that which tipped the Greek woman into her favor. She meant it; so long as they loved each other, that was what mattered. Nia could hardly scold Hena in his choice of mate, a choice which was sure to cause scandal elsewhere—not with the choices she made. If they were happy, who was she to stand in their way?
Now, if the day ever came where Ana no longer made Hena happy… well, perhaps her amity would not continue then. But she would not wish misery on her brother, not when he held something he so clearly valued firmly in his grasp. The depth of his regard was obvious in the furnishings and walls around them; he would never have done something so extravagant if he did not care for the bard. He would not bother wasting his time.
I want to follow the path these feelings take me on.
“Then you should,” Nia said simply, reaching out to gently squeeze her companion’s knee. “Go where it takes you, revel in what you feel, and embrace the future that follows. If it all falls apart in the end, at least you will have had this. It’s more than many others can say.”
As the evening went on, their conversation lightened, the pair easier around each other now that they’d found their common ground. The reservations Nia originally held were quickly dissolving in the face of Ana’s more genuine demeanor, her initial distrust fading into a cautious warmth. She could see why it was that the foreign woman captivated her brother so; she was beautiful, yes, but there was more to her behind the shroud of mystery she presented to the world. Nia found she would like to know the woman better, to spend more time around her, not only for the sake of Akhenaten, but also for her own. Had they met under different circumstances, she had no doubt their friendship would have been fast and easy, but as it was, she thought it could develop in time. The woman held a certain allure, one that was hard to pinpoint, but Nia was charmed, nonetheless.
By the time she made to part, she was well satisfied with the way their meeting had gone, in spite of her trepidation at the beginning. Bidding Ana farewell with a hazy smile, she reached out to cup her cheek for a moment, a wordless gesture of affection and tacit approval. Thanking her for her hospitality, the younger noblewoman stumbled back toward her own home, peacefully content and less conflicted than she had been in weeks.
