It was a wonder how Dione had managed to wander all the way to the royal gardens and not notice she had. Typically Dione noticed just about everything as she tended to bounce from one thing to the next. But today was a different day. The news of her family voting no on a female successor to the throne in the senate was no shock to her but it caused her to fret all too much about how her friend, her Princess would see their friendship now. Of course Persephone had to have known Dione thought much differently than what her family had decided! But Dione was a creature of social life and didn’t want her friendship with one of the most powerful women in the courts.
Of course the gardens where a good place to think about such things on how to approach Persephone. So Dione glided up and down the isles of green shrubbery her mind wracking for something to say that wouldn’t make it seem like Dione was behind what her family thought. Her yellow dress flowed like ripples on a pond as her leather sandals stepped silently along the paths. Dione’s hair was down and her natural curls bounced softly with every step she took.
Upon reaching a stone bench Dione sat down on it, all too ungrateful for a lady of her position should have. But no one was near enough to whiteness this show of worry from Dione of Nikolaos. Ocean blue eyes scanned the bushes around her until they found the soft pink flowers which she admired and felt her stresses of the senates decision slip from her. A feeling of courage went through her and she knew she would find the right things to say.
Standing from the bench Dione moved through the gardens and to a bench somewhat closer to the palace. She had sent a messenger to Persephone saying she wished to talk, maybe she should have told the messenger something else? The worrying feeling crept up her back and she swallowed down a lump. Why was she worrying about this so much? She was only going to tell the Princess that she didn’t feel the same about what they voted. That wasn’t betraying her family! That was thinking for herself and talking woman to woman!
”God’s help me...” Dione whispered looking at the statue of Aphrodite then to the sky.

Persephone was at her desk again by the time the messenger reached her. It had taken her the rest of the day on the day of the Senate vote to coalesce her thoughts and retain her mental calibration. She had been, to be blunt, out of sorts, until she had gone to bed. It was upon rising the next day - after a full night's slumber and a calming few hours of peace, that she had awoken, as per normal, with the first rays of the sunshine. It had been so alike to every other morning that it had given her feet - and mind - a grounding. Despite her whole world having changed - for she was now the legal heir to the throne of her kingdom - the sun had risen as normal, she had awakened as normal and the world went on as normal... It had helped her bring everything a little more into focus and she had been able, since then, to put stylus to parchment and clay and continue with her work.
Upon the Senate's decision, her offices had been inundated with letters sent from nearly every province in the kingdom. Those who had voted against the law change wanting to make nice, those who had voted for it wanting to make sure she was aware of the loyalty, dedication and sacrifice it had caused them to do so. A little emotional blackmail to ensure that appropriate favouritism and reward would be coming their way for their show of benevolent allegiance.
It had taken Persephone nearly the whole day to work through the letters, arranging meetings with some, sending replies back to the others. She had found Dione's letter amongst them all, familiar with her elegant script and rounded lettering - a testament of her exuberant nature and giving personality. She had held a little trepidation upon opening it, for Dione had always loved the Court but not the political Senate. So, what she had to say upon this turn of political events, Persephone had been ignorance and curious.
The letter had said little, simply asking for an audience with the princess and Persephone had organised for such a meeting to be arranged for a few days’ time - for her timetable was booked solid until then. She managed to squeeze in the meeting with her friend at the earliest opportunity for two reasons. One, she was genuinely curious as to what the girl wanted and two, she had always enjoyed Dione's company and was excited to meet with her again.
The two young ladies had been acquaintances for many years. Dione had always been attending of Court with her mother and Persephone had always been there stepping in for her own. The two of them had known each other since they were young. But it had been in recent years that Dione had started to take an avid interest in the Court. As a member of the second branch of the Nikolaos House, she had been made aware, upon maturing, that she was the lowest possibly rank within Court; the relative of someone who's nobility had been given, not born. That didn't stop her being permitted to attend and it didn't stop her being due the respect of a noblewoman, but it made a difference in the eyes of many of the ladies in Court. As such, Dione had started to learn and become adept at handling such matters. Becoming charming and social and elegant and all the things a noblewoman was expected to emulate, in order to win over those around her and ensure that she was never considered beneath those she mingled with.
Persephone had watched the transformation from her position of holding the Court sessions with interest. She had put similar lessons and ideals into practice herself, in order to win some camaraderie as well as loyalty in the Court, but her role as princess forbid her from being too friendly with others. For to show great friendship with one person would only solve to worry another. Which was possibly why the young women she felt closest to in Court were of the less powerful Varonos families than the Dynasteias.
On the day of the appointed meeting with Dione, a young messenger approached the door to Persephone's office. Waiting for her attention to be his, the man was quiet and stood with the kind of respect and patience that a long-time worker of the palace would naturally develop. Once Persephone was finished with the line of text she was writing, she looked up at the man and was surprised when he informed her that the Lady Dione was out in the palace gardens. She was a little early, but by no means intrusive.
"Shall I instruct her to one of the solar rooms, Your Highness?" The messenger asked and Persephone smiled and stood.
Her gown that day - a chiton of pale peach, fluttered as she moved. She wore fitted wrist cuffs and bands around her upper arms in rose gold and her hair had been curled into a style more feminine than was her usual.
"That's alright, Meros." She told the man, remembering his name due to his longevity in palace occupation. "I could do with some fresh air, anyway."
Thereby, instead of having the visit attend upon the royal - as was tradition - Persephone left the room to head to meet her guest, being told she was sitting amongst the rose-beds. The guard at the door to her study followed Persephone through the corridors, refusing the permit her privacy until she had actually entered the gardens, located the right area and had Dione within view.
The gardens of the royal palati were reserved areas. Only members of the nobility were permitted to enter and had to give their full name to the guard on watch at every entrance and exit. The guard would then inform the master steward of the visitor and it would be dealt with accordingly. Commoners were not permitted inside the royal grounds without formal permission and no-one but Xanthos blood was permitted inside the Xanthos family's royal gardens. With all of this into account, the gardens were usually devoid of people entirely and the security was high, allowing the guard to have shadowed Persephone about the palace to take up a station within view and easy reach but distanced enough not to eavesdrop and to give private communion to the two young women.
Persephone approached the young girl Dione from her left, noting her bent posture and her concerned stance. Had she not been so well trained her features might have fallen into a frown, an expression of concern... but instead they remained calm and non-committal. This is, until she spoke. At which point a small, friendly smile crossed her lips.
"Dione." Persephone commented, her formal title dropped a little in favour of familiarity, as was her right as a princess. "It is pleasant to see you." She told the young girl, waiting for her to stand so that they might greet one another and continue about whatever business had caused the young Nikolaos girl to request their meeting...

The sound of foot falls reached Dione and she stood erect. Before her- Persephone, the beautiful Princess and an acquaintance of Dione. Though the princess probably knew more about Dione than Dione did the princess it was totally okay as the princess was head of the court. The princess addressed her as just Dione, but for the lesser to do the same would be disrespectful!
Dropping into a bow Dione gave a sheepish smile to Persephone. "Kalí méra Princess Persephone, I'm both honored and grateful that you agreed to meet with me under, difficult... situations." Dione's hair dropped over her face and she tucked it back behind her ear.
Her body language was strong, but one could easily tell she was on edge. With this feeling came the nervousness that crept like a shadow. Instantly her delicate hands went to her pearl necklace, but she realized how childish this seemed and dropped her hands clasping them together behind her back.
"Is that alright if we walk My Lady? I feel what I have to say is hard to form into phrases while standing idle.." Dione's eyes met Persephone's for a moment before she gracefully stretched out her arm in a 'after you' gesture. 'Stop freaking out! You're making things worse Dione of Nikolaos!' Taking a deep breath Dione composed herself and stepped into stride with the princess.
"I heard about the senate's ruling, and about my family's vote.. against a female monarch." Ocean eyes glanced at the elegant woman gauging her emotions, but found the woman was like an impenetrable fort. "While I support my family in many things, I don't agree that a woman is not strong enough to rule."
Dione stopped and turned to Persephone and smiled, her typical confidence returning as she found the words forming without her having to really think much about them. "I believe you are more than capable to rule over us as a Queen. I do not mean any disrespect to my family when I say this, they are wrong in not believing in your strength both intellectually and in your beauty."

Persephone nodded her assent as the young girl asked that they were able to walk and talk simultaneously. Whilst she had never allowed herself the time to form a habit of such things herself, Persephone knew that many people preferred motion while trying to establish difficult to form thoughts into verbal communication. She herself had been trained to think and speak without the need of moving any of her muscles - let alone walk - but she had never seen the need as a weakness in others.
"But of course, Dione." She assured the girl. And the two of them began to walk amongst the flowerbeds, now in a position where they could speak more easily - she hoped.
Persephone said nothing to begin a conversation, nor prompted or nagged at Dione to continue her thoughts or express her feelings. She was genuinely a little nervous and curious as to the girl's attendance on her that day and stayed quiet so as to encourage her to voice her mind with her own words.
When the girl finally did speak, and began regarding the Senate vote, it was instantly clear to Persephone where her thoughts and concerns had manifested. A soft and polite smile had spread across her features by the time Dione had finished what she was saying, encouraging that she would support Persephone as a Queen and knew her to be a strong and intelligent leader already. Such compliments caused a soft warmth in Persephone's chest. Whilst she heard flattery on a regular basis, most of such words were spoken on her appearance or her feminine elegance. Rarely was she given such positive comments regarding her skills in a male dominated field such as leadership.
"Dione..." Persephone began with a hand raised slightly in order to halt her words as she came to the end of her thought process. "Please trouble yourself no more on this." She smiled softly. "Whilst we are all loyal to our families, we are not always in unison with them regarding thoughts and values." Her gaze turned intelligent and insightful. "Many families voted against the change in law that day. And I choose to believe it to be comments on their feelings towards a change in law and tradition rather than a chastisement of my own efforts. The vote was a debate in the changing of law. About whether women should rule more easily in general. Rather than whether I, personally, should be monarch." She raised one brow. "If anything, all of womanhood should be the ones slighted. Tradition almost won over a future change in favour of our gender."
With her head to one side in consideration, she continued. "But the vote was swayed in the end and now the responsibility of rule will eventually fall to myself." She glanced at the girl beside her. "I supposed it will be my responsibility to prove that such a risk by so many was not foolishness."

When the princess finally spoke the Nikolaos girl felt the weight lift from her chest- like the could breathe again. Dione listened intently to Persephone and how she saw the decision. Whilst Dione found herself agreeing with somethings she also did not wholly agree to somethings that the princess said.
Such as tradition. The Nikolaos family was a noble family that stuck to tradition like honey to a sweet tart. They were strong headed at times but were typically mediators in such things as this matter. But Dione also knew that her own parents and relatives valued what her brothers or cousins did more so than what she, her younger sisters or Thalia were to do. Dione never felt an issue with this- she wasn't particularly one to get her hands dirty nor be strong and masculine like her brothers.
Adversely Dione felt that a woman held her own strength, a cunning, slow and time biding creature one that watched and waited for the right moment. Dione didn't think that Persephone could be any different could she? As a princess she was taught to be poised and proper in times such as this. This made it a challenge for Dione to make a connection- a personal one- to the woman who she liked to think would be her friend one day.
"If I may Princess," Dione paused in her walking and looked at the statue that stood before them, the white stone god Apollo- god of the sun, "In my family the men were always the ones with important jobs and the like- as is expected of a male. The women were taught to attend court and know their manners. But my mother- Lady Ianthe- taught me from a young age that a woman has her own strengths. She would say that we were not made in the same way as men, our minds and bodies are very different. My mother would say that a woman was to be cunning, slow, and watch the room before choosing what she was to do."
"I know it is not my place to tell you Princess what you should and shouldn't do;nor do I make assumptions of what knowledge you have, but perhaps to govern over your peoples you should see what those who came before you have done, as well as looking at your peoples and knowing what they want. Putting those together and adding in good judgement over what you are to do I have no doubt that you will be a wonderful Queen- with or without a man at your side."
Dione felt her face flush as she finished, 'You've done nothing but babble Dione!' she scolded herself, what princess or anybody for that matter care what she thought? She was just a member of the court, a socialite who gossiped with the others and spread gossip to those unknowing of the rumors. Dione was not an intellectual type, she had simply spent too much time around Linos- she was a airhead who wanted nothing but romance and a husband!
The blonde haired maiden lowered her head respectfully and bowed, "Forgive me, my tongue runs off before my mind can follow." Righting herself Dione felt a rose between her fingers and lightly pulled at it fiddling with it behind her back, calming her nerves as much as she could.

Persephone smiled softly as Dione spoke. It was true that the girl rambled a little. And that she told Persephone much of what she already knew. But she knew that her words came from a good and caring place, for the two of them had never had any issues with their - well... it was as close to a friendship as a young princess could have when all political expectations were adhered to.
"Your mother is wise, Dione." Persephone began as they continued to walk amongst the flowers of the garden. Persephone paused the check a bloom that seemed wilted, but upon finding it to be the only flower as such and that the rest were fine she made no mental note to check with the gardener. "And I agree with everything you have just said. I didn't mean to insinuate that women are powerless and tradition holds them that way. I would never seek a right for myself to take up arms or to achieve in a realm in which men are so distinctively advantaged. But women have no limited skill in ruling, just as they have no such restrictions within Court. It is limiting to our gender to think such through the eyes of familiarity." She offered a half smile at the girl. "But then, history must develop in its own way. To push on such things often has the opposite result than one wishes."
The two of them meandered around the gardens a little in contended silence, now that they had covered the material points, and set the girls concerns to rest. Clearly, she had been worried that Persephone would hold a grudge against herself or her family for their decisions and she hoped she had assuaged such concerns.
"So, tell me..." Persephone spoke, broaching a new topic of conversation as they walked. "How are your family since the Senate meet? How has the Court been, outside of my ears?" She smiled at the girl, knowing there was nothing Dione liked better than to display her skills in information gathering and gossip, and having an attentive listener with whom to expel it all to.
