Evi didn’t often visit the royal paláti - she rarely had reason to be there, except perhaps for state functions and the like. Often when she did travel there, it was with other people: with friends or with members of her family. This was the first time, she thought, that she was visiting alone, and of her own volition. She came in search of Emilia, the Queen’s sister, Princess of Athenia.
The young Antonis didn’t know the Princess well. They had met at a number of functions and gatherings and, being of the same age, had clicked well together. Evi remembered fondly the shenanigans the pair had gotten up to during etiquette lessons when they were younger, thinking they were doing the right thing, but ultimately just making a show and dance between themselves. Emilia was, and had always been, a sweet, unassuming girl. She seemed younger than her years at times, and sometimes Evi forgot that they were the same age.
It was for this reason that Evi had been shocked to hear of Emilia’s engagement to Elias of Stravos. Elias had told her nothing of this new arrangement, which hurt more than Evi cared to admit to herself. Their… love, if it could be called that, was nothing short of a passing fling, and Evi knew she would never be the one to marry the man who so desperately sought to rule Athenia. Circenia had seen quite thoroughly to it that Evi would know of her place, which wasn’t at Elias’ side. Still, she couldn’t quite let the Stravos headlord go. Evi had spent far too long harbouring feelings for this man, even before he had started paying attention to her.
So, she had come to the palace, here to request to speak to the Princess. It was bold gesture, and Evi wasn’t even sure what she wanted to ask Emilia, much less talk about. Were they to be considered friends? Was this even the type of thing a noble of lower birth could ask a Princess?
Approaching the main gates, she announced her presence to the guards situated on either side, “I am Evi of Antonis, here to see Princess Emilia of Xanthos,” she said with much more confidence than she felt inside herself. One of the guards sent a runner up to the palace, while another guard appeared out of nowhere as an escort for the young Lady. The pair walked though the gardens in silence, and they had just entered the palace when the runner appeared again.
They waited for a moment for the poor boy to catch his breath before he spoke “Princess Emilia will receive you in the gardens, if you care to wait out of doors,” he pointed as he spoke, illustrating his words, and Evi nodded wordlessly, pleased to enjoy the warm weather they were experiencing. It was a far better choice than waiting in a lavish meeting room in the palace, which would probably seem stuffy and claustrophobic given the topic Evi eventually wanted to raise with the other woman. At least in the gardens they could talk quietly whilst enjoying a turn about them, and Evi had an easy getaway path if the conversation turned sour.

Left to her own devices even more so these days, Emilia found her own thoughts overwhelming. At least before this, in the month after the insurgent attack even if she had been very much alone, the Stravos family members had come around in a bid to keep her company. Sure, Emilia had not been entirely having a great time with Danae, and sometimes Circenia can be a tad too pandering to her, but they were at least proper human beings she could have conversations with. She loved her mastiff, but Labros had a limited vocabulary, most of which Emilia could not comprehend. His presence made her smile, but conversation was also something she sorely missed.
In a bid to try and clear her mind, especially after her conversation with Marietta a few days ago, Emilia had been questioning herself. Lesley's words still rang in her head. She was a princess, right? She could ask questions, right? So why did she hesitate? Her own bodyguard had said to her many times, that she should do what she thought was right. But perhaps a large part of Emilia's hesitation was the fact that she didn't believe she was even right to begin with. She was afterall, very often wrong be it in actions or words.
So was her decision to agree to Eias's offer of marriage even right? So why did it feel so wrong? That she would think nothing of trampling over her lifelong values to marry for love? But wasn't that what Persephone had taught her, to put kingdom over self?
Finding herself in the gardens, the greenery and brush had been where the brunette princess found herself taking refuge these days when her thoughts threathen to overwhelm her, and that was where the runner boy came to inform her of the young Evi of Antonis's visit to her. Emilia knew of Evi, Marietta's younger sister and a girl of her age, Emilia had shared a few lessons with Evi when tutors of neighboring kingdoms were invited, and in truth, she quite liked the gentle demeanour of the young Antonis sister. Yet, Evi was quieter then most, and usually caught in the rush of many court members vying for her attention, Emilia often found herself unable to get a private conversation between them, causing their relationship as friends, or even acquaintences to be pushed to the wayside. But perhaps now would be a good time to allow it to flourish?
Asking the runner to bring the lady to the gardens, Emilia waved at a servant to fetch her young mastiff. It took little time for Labros to come running, his black form now far larger. At a seated position, the mastiff who would turn a year old in just a few months, would reach it's mistress's chest midway should they both be seated, and that was where Emilia deftly commanded Labros to position himself as they awaited for the arrival of their visitor. Dressed in a simple teal chiton, Emilia's rubber the head of her companion canine affectionately, but turned once she heard the rustle of dresses, and smiled when Evi appeared.
Beckoning servants nearby to fetch refreshments, Emilia waved at Evi to take a seat next to her on the stone bench which overlooked the Aegean sea, before cocking a curious head at the young girl. "What has brought you here, my lady Evi?" she murmured, although Emilia wonder if it would be the same matter which had brought Marietta. She had received many congratulations on her impending nuptials, yet none seemed to bring her genuine joy.

She had received many congratulations on her impending nuptials, yet none seemed to bring her genuine joy.
Approaching the young princess, Evi pushed a smile onto her features. It wasn’t so much that she wasn’t glad to see the princess. They barely knew each other: save for the few times their families, or lessons, or events had thrust them together, the pair had never really had reason to converse just between the two of them. The other girl had always come across as sweet and unassuming, yet full of life and able to enjoy even the simplest things. Evi, for her part, liked that about the princess. She liked to think back to when they were but children. How shy and uncomfortable they were back then.
New friends came along about as often as the winds swept through Athenia for Evi, and she burnt through them just as fast. One moment they were joined at the hip and the next they vanished from her life, flash friends who were there for the moment. That was what Emilia was to Evi - what right did she had to come in here and demand to know more about her personal life than was already public knowledge. Evi felt so confused, though. She knew what she felt for Elias: love.
Well it went a little further than that, it was obsession. Evi was beginning to understand what Marietta had tried to explain to her about what Evi was like when she spoke of Elias. If Elias were to proclaim the sky was red, Evi would agree. She would even go as far as to believe it, even though she could see with her own two eyes that the sky was blue. What was that called? It was confusing to the young girl. She was beginning to understand, but not entirely. So did she want to know more about the relationship because of her love for the man in question? Or did she want to know about it because of her worry for the girl who was to be his betrothed?
The girl curtseyed, dipping her head into a bow when she was close enough, “Princess Emilia,” she greeted, remembering her etiquette lessons just in time before she took a seat on the bench beside Emilia. She took a moment to thank the servants as she accepted a glass of fruit juice from one of them. It gave her a second or two to steel her nerves and think about what she wanted to say, what she wanted to ask. It was a quagmire in her mind - what the actual issue was.
She didn’t quite know what she was expecting, but Evi hadn’t expected that they would jump straight to the matter at hand. Evi had hoped for some small talk, a way to ease herself into the deeper questions… or the option to chicken out should she wish it. Instead, there was no such option. But there was something in the way Emilia smiled, a warmth, a genuineness, a softness of spirit she just couldn't pass up.
“I heard you are engaged to Elias of Stravos…” Evi began slowly, biting her lower lip as she mulled over her words. What did she even want to say to the other girl? “I…” there was a long pause while she loaded up her phrasing. Then she changed her mind, “I wanted to offer my congratulations in person,” she said, though her tone contained none of the joy that should have accompanied such a statement. “You must be very… pleased.”

Then she changed her mind, “I wanted to offer my congratulations in person,” she said, though her tone contained none of the joy that should have accompanied such a statement. “You must be very… pleased.”
She smiled and returned the greeting of the young Antonis lady with a respectful nod of her own head as the young lady took a seat on the stone bench. Her canine curiously took a few steps forward to sniff at Evi's chiton as the material settled on the bench, but Emilia quickly clicked her tongue, motioning for Labros to settle down next to her again, before turning over to observe the young lady.
To call them friends would be a fallacy, for much like Evi, Emilia's friend's came and go like the wind. She had no long term friend, a disadvantage when it came to being a princess of the kingdom. Many befriended her for her status, even more for her situation and capability to have ears of importance listening to her words. But many of them failed to account for the fact that Emilia had no head for politics, and when they realized how the brunette was unlikely to be of any help when it came to Senate decisions, they left as quickly as they came.
It was a laugh to realize her closest 'friends' would be her own bodyguards, and her dog. It was perhaps that very reason, that explained why Emilia was so attached to Labros, and very lucky that her black mastiff was equally attached to it's mistress.
That Evi's reason for visiting would be due to the annoucement of her engagement to Elias was of no surprise. Had they been any closer, Evi would have perhaps heard of the discussions Emilia had had for the ceremony with her own sister, for the princess had asked Marietta's opinion on holding such a ceremony when they people of Athenia themselves were in less then desirable positions, poverty on the rise.
But Emilia presumed Marietta had not spoken to Evi, and merely nodded her head when the young girl started slowly. She remembered Evi being shy and reserved, and did not wish to push the young lady to the point of discomfort. As such, Emilia allowed Evi to dictate the conversation, and only responded when asked. "Thank you." Emilia's response was soft to the offer of congratulations, but also automatic, as she had responded much the same to many people.
To call herself pleased? Happy? That was still a train of thought Emilia had never finished, and Evi's direct questioning of it only made Emilia give a wry smile, turning her gaze away to watch the gentle breeze caress the top of Poseidon's domain in the distance. "Pleased is one way of putting it, I guess." she murmured cryptically, affectionately rubbing Labros behind his ear as she spoke. Was Elias handsome? It would be a lie to say no, especially to the eyes of a brunette who fell in love once a week on average. Emilia was notorious for easily loving someone - yet so now, why was she so disenchanted by the idea of marrying Elias? He was handsome, he was capable... but he was also not all he portrayed himself to be, at least not to Emilia. Especially if she were to went by the words of her bodyguard and Hector, whom she had met of late.
Yet, to say such things would be to betray Emilia knowing far more then Elias thought she knew.
"I guess it was a necessity?" she finally clarified, as she turned to Evi with a soft, uncertain smile. "Not to say Lord Elias wouldn't make a fine husband. I'm sure he would." He just wasn't who Emilia wanted." she finished in her own head, words unspoken to anyone yet. He was enchanting, he was gentle.... but he just didn't add up. His actions and words did not add up, nor did it jive with what she has heard of him, and the lack of genuinety was what held Emilia back. "But I thank you for your offer of congratulations, Lady Evi. I hope you and your family would attend the wedding once we have finalized the details."

The dog plodded over to greet her, and Evi hesitated before reaching over to scratch the dog behind the ears, “He’s a beautiful animal,” she said by way of small talk, not really expecting a reply. Evi’s sister had a small cat of some description - Evi wasn’t too sure what breed, but the cat followed Hebe around like an imprinted duckling. For her own part, Evi wasn’t really one for animals. She liked them, yes, but that was as far as it went. She had no real desire for her own pet - though the dog did seem as loyal as the cat, so maybe it would be nice, to have something that loved you above all else. The beast returned to Emilia’s side and Evi smiled as she watched it, “well trained too.”
No matter, she wasn’t looking to talk about the dog anyway. Her smile diminished somewhat as she remembered why she had come here. It was a quagmire of issues, and Evi knew she had to tread lightly. She knew Elias of Stravos, knew of what type of man he was, knew what he sought - the throne above all else. The only reason Evi thought he would want such a marriage was to rule Athenia. It was the only thing that made sense. Emilia was a nice girl, sure, but she didn’t think Elias wanted to marry her out of love.
Though Evi wasn’t blind to the ways of court. She knew that most did not marry for love. They married for position, for status. This marriage would give Elias both. And with the Queen absent, presumed dead by some, presumed fled by others, if the rumours were to hold true (and Evi had no idea what to believe anymore so she believed both in part)… well that meant that Emilia would take the throne, and Elias would be catapulted up to the dizzying heights of King along with it.
“A necessity for who?” The girl asked quietly. She knew it was a requirement for Elias, but what did Emilia hope to gain from this match? Evi loved Elias - he was the man of her dreams. Or, at least, she thought she loved Elias. Much of what Marietta had once said to Evi had been playing on repeat in her mind these last few days. Marietta had accused Evi of loving and trusting Elias blindly. She didn’t think that was true - Evi knew about Elias’ role in the pirate attacks. He had admitted that to her, at least, and Evi trusted that there was honesty between the pair, a confidence of sorts.
And it wasn’t that Evi purposely wanted to sow the seeds of doubt in Emilia’s mind. Elias had never promised himself to Evi, or even said anything that could be remotely construed as an inkling that they could share a future together. Circenia would certainly never allow it. Evi had mostly accepted this. But, by the same token, she just couldn’t completely give up on the life she had only recently started to dream of. She didn’t respond to Emilia’s invitation to join them at the wedding festivities.
Instead, she swallowed her doubts and misgivings and ploughed on, “I’m sure you’ve heard the rumours. About Elias and me.” She wondered if they had reached the palace yet, “I am concerned that he is entering into this for… the wrong reasons. For reasons of seizing power. Are you…” she swallowed again and reached for her drink, taking a moment to steel her nerves. Should she really be talking about this with a princess? Probably not. “He talks of wanting the throne more than anything. His ambitions… they are far reaching, bold, even unwavering. Without any concern for those unfortunate enough to be caught in the crossfire.” Evi was not always a genuine person; sometimes she said what she didn’t believe for her own motives. But she radiated concern and altruism in this moment, whether she was actually concerned for Emilia’s wellbeing remained to be seen. But she said it, and acted that way all the same, trying to get Emilia to warm up to her so that they could have this open dialogue.

Evi's question was.... well, it hit home. Who was it a necessity for? Should one asked Emilia, she definitely did not see a need for her to marry now. But then again, that train of thought largely came from the fact that Emilia had been raised to believe that the duty of an advantageous marriage for the kingdom fell on Persephone, and while she did not envy her elder sister for that facet of her life, Emilia had been happy of her luck as the second princess, blessed to enjoy the life of a royal but with less responsibilities.
Yet, Persephone's disappearance meant that a large amount of the responsibility now fell on her, a young teenager who had never been equipped to handle all of it. Not for lack of trying, for in her youth her sister and father had done their best. But Emilia just had no head for lessons, and drove away more tutors then her sister could find.
So who was it a necessity for?
It was a question the brunette had no answer for, so she only could fall silent, both girl's caught in a whirlpool of their own thoughts as Emilia absent mindedly rubbed the head of the lolling mastiff by her side, who was already going to sleep from the warmth of being under the sun.
When Evi spoke up again, Emilia turned to glance at the young Antonis, but frowned when she spoke of rumors. Of Elias and Evi? Being sequestered away in the palati with scarcely a chance to step out unattended, much less being allowed visitors, Emilia had been sorely out of date when it came to matters in regards to those of the nobles and royal family. So when Evi spoke of rumors, she could only cock her head in confusion, unaware of what was happening. "I am unaware of any of that, Lady Evi. He...." she paused, trailing off as she tried to make sense of it. Recalling the day Elias had suggested they marry, she tried to scrounge up the words he had used. "He had said it was for my protection, when he suggested such an arrangement. That he would... that everything he's done up till now was for my protection."
As much as the young princess was someone who wore her heat on her sleeve, she was quite unaware of how Evi held feelings for Emilia, and as such the words of the Antonis confused her quite abit as she tried to make sense of it, flickering her gaze to look at her companion at the moment. "Are you certain it is as you speak of, my lady?" the brunette tried to confirm, her lips in a line of worry. The throne? Technically, she was the crown princess now, which meant it would make Elias king once the Senate ruled her sister as dead, and she would ascend to the throne. It would make Elias the king... which meant she was a pawn? The very thought of it brought a sour taste in her mouth, and Emilia realized how very much she disliked being used.
Uncertain anymore of what to believe, her hold on the edges of her chiton tightened, the princess biting her bottom lip as she considered Evi's words. "So what are you suggesting, Lady Evi?"

The change in Emilia was… not obvious per se, but it was noticeable. She somehow seemed smaller in that moment, when Evi asked who the marriage was necessary for. Clearly not for Emilia, not if Elias suggested it - Evi could not see Elias suggesting marriage purely for the benefit of Emilia. With Persephone gone… dead or otherwise, the throne fell to Emilia… a girl who clearly seemed so far out of her depth that she was almost drowning in it all. It was a horrible realisation to come to, truth be told, that Elias wasn’t the man Evi had thought he was.
Evi herself seemed hunched in on herself, as if the weight of her realisations was too much for her to bare. But that was what Elias did. He drew people in by making them feel important, by saying their names and letting them feel seen. Evi normally has a superb instinct, borderline supernatural… and somehow it was lost on her when she met Elias, blinded by her emotions such that she thought he was a gift from the Gods. Finding out about the pirate attacks, that Elias had been responsible for them, was a hard blow. Initially she had been fine with it, but the more she thought about it, the more she wondered about just how far Elias’ ambitions stretched… just how far he would go to achieve his ends.
The pirate attacks were damaging enough to Athenia, but Evi didn’t think Elias would just stop at that, even after he had been arrested. She had wondered, though she had never voiced it to anyone, if the attack on the palace was also one of Elias’ machinations. That had definitely been damaging to Athenia - the loss of their Queen was having catastrophic effects on the city.
“Oh. Well…” the girl trailed off, feeling suddenly embarrassed by the shared knowledge that she had been sleeping with Elias. Not that sex out of wedlock was particularly horrifying. But to talk about her lover with her lover’s fiancée was… well it came with its own challenges. Evi fell silent for a few minutes. This was harder than she thought. Normally she was so talkative, the words coming so easily to her, regardless of who she was talking to. It was her way: when it came to friendships, Evi was anything but passive. She took genuine pleasure in getting to know someone else and had no trouble talking to other people about whatever it was that was important to them.
Today, however, in this moment, Evi didn’t think she would be able to explain swimming to a fish.
“I don’t know, your highness…” Evi murmured, feeling her heart rate rabbit up in her chest. She was treading in dangerous waters now. The risk of being known to the princess as a naysayer was the best outcome, really, and that was terrifying in and of itself. And yet… Evi still wanted Elias for herself. What was wrong with her? Why was she even here, talking to the Princess? She thought she genuinely cared about the other girl’s wellbeing, but there was a small part of her that was shouting loudly in the back of he mind, the part of her who wanted to end this engagement for herself.
“I just… I am not certain of anything,” she admitted out loud, “Except that Lord Elias admitted to me his involvement in the pirate attacks a while back, the attacks on ships in Athenian waters. He confirmed that to me personally.” Evi swallowed. “I think… if he did that, what else would he be willing to do? How far would he be willing to go?”

Had Emilia been a little more attentive, she would've noticed how Evi seemed to react much like she did when it came to chatter about her impending wedding - both ladies did not seem to want it very much. But Emilia was caught up in her thoughts. Because the very idea that she wasn't excited for a wedding was preposterous to her. Why would she not be, when getting married had basically been her life goal? And to one of the most handsome men in Athenia? Elias was touted far and wide to hold beauty far beyond many men, rumored to be blessed by the Gods. So how could she still have so much doubts?
That had been largely her thoughts following Elias's surprise annoucement, and despite it being almost a week now, she still could come to no conclusion.
That Elias had spoken to someone else of wanting the throne more then anything however, that was a source of surprise to Emilia. Everytime she had spoken to her supposed fiance, he had always spoken of marrying her to help her. Emilia had made it no secret that she had no wish, nor acumen to rule a kingdom. While her sister may have been basically taking their father's place since years ago, Emilia was perfectly happy in being the second born, basking in enjoying all the benefits of being a princess without the responsibility of one.
Yet now, she was called upon to make decisions she had no clue head or tails about.
Listening intently as Evi spoke, even of the pirate attacks, Emilia had to wrack her brain to remember Persephone speaking of it. Had her sister mention it before? When? Had this been before or after their father's untimely death? Had it been something they discussed in Senate? Try as she might, Emilia could not seem to remember anything beyond the fact that said pirate attacks had been damaging to whatever bill the late King Minas had been trying to pass. But to hear that Elias had confirmed ships to be attacked in Athenian waters... surely that shouldn't be something any noble or royal in Athenia should be doing, much less someone who claimed he wanted to rule the kingdom?
Suddenly, it was like a clamp over her heart as Emilia's lips paled, her eyes now uncertain. "Are you saying a marriage to me is.... simply something he wishes to use, Lady Evi?" she asked, pausing as her eyes showed her trying to think quickly. Elias was a lord of a province - of which province, Emilia did not know, even if she knew she should. But what she did remember was whatever province it was, he handled it well, to make the Stravos family one of the richest in Athenia. "Lord Elias handles finances and logistics well, he would not be amiss as a King.... but if what you say is true Lady Evi, I do not wish him on any throne to handle the people of Athenia. Those actions are not befitting of a lord, much less a King."

Evi felt for Emilia. She really did. As the second daughter of the King, Emilia had probably been raised with equal parts expectation and security - she had not been born to lead, but to follow, to obey. She was not destined to rule. And here she was, set to marry a man who… well for all the civil unrest, seemed and acted like he really was placed on this earth for the sole reason to rule a great nation. Evi herself could not fathom what that would feel like… to be a pawn in other people’s games. Especially when she probably didn’t even realise she was a pawn, what with Elias’ expert machinations and manipulations.
The more she thought about it, the more she came to realise just how deep-rooted Elias’ schemes were. He was an intelligent man, far too intelligent for his own good, really.
“I’m saying…” what was she saying? Was she saying that Elias wished to use the young, naïve princess? She supposed she was. “Yes.” She finished lamely. There was no skirting around what Evi thought, not when she had been asked a direct question by a member of the royal family. Of course, she had no proof of it, other than Elias’ word. But Elias’ word meant nothing if Evi convinced Emilia to confront him about it. He would lie, probably say to Emilia (and anyone else who would listen) that Evi was jealous and stirring the pot for her own gains: him.
It made her wonder, if Elias had planned this somehow, then what was his interest in herself? Why did he seem to want to continue seeing Evi, especially as a bedmate? What part did she have to play in the game of thrones? Or… did he actually want her for the purely selfish reason of wanting her? There was no way for Evi to know the truth of her part in all of this. But she could not sit by and say nothing when she knew of the plans involving Elias’ part in the pirate ships doing damage in Athenian waters.
“I…” her breath caught in her throat and she swallowed, trying to clear it before she spoke again. “I do not know if he would make a good King or not.” Evi wanted to believe that he would make a great king. He had done well enough in Lyncestia that it probably meant he could do wonders for Athenia. But he hadn’t orchestrated attacks on his own province like he had against the kingdom. And Evi had to question why he had done what he had done. He had explained it to her, but she still barely understood.
Maybe that was the problem. She didn’t understand. She was young, still a child by the reckoning of some. What was politics to her, and why should she become involved in it? It was a mistake to approach the Princess, Evi realised now. Evi thought back to what her sister had said, how she had tried to warn her of Elias' machinations. Evi hadn't understood that either.
Emilia didn’t need to hear the babblings of a girl, especially when they could have dire consequences. She was wrong to have come here. “I am sorry, Your Highness. I should not have come here today. I only know what Elias has told me but there could be more to it, a piece of the puzzle that I am missing. Perhaps it is best to ignore me… the stupid words of a jilted lover.” Evi stood, and bowed her head in respect as a sign that she was preparing to leave. “I don’t know…” she repeated.

It would be a surprise to no one if Emilia mentioned of her uncertainties that surrounded the sudden engagement she found herself in with Elias... but she had always convinced herself it was for the best. Afterall, by all intents and purposes, she should be the one taking over the reins for handling the kingdom at this point of Persephone's disappearance, yet Emilia knew heads nor tails of how does one do that. It would only make sense to have a husband that does, would it not? And as a baron of his own lands, Elias sounded like someone of sound mind who could do that.
Suddenly, it was as if the young Emilia who had dreamt of love and romance, who prayed feverishly to the goddess Aphrodite for a husband who would cherish and love her, and be as loyal to her as her father had been to the mother Emilia had barely remembered, was all gone. In its place, was a girl desperately trying to grasp onto the strings of logic and to do what was right... or what she hoped was right.
To hear Evi say it so bluntly, that Elias was using her, was perhaps difficult to hear. Most definitely difficult to hear. But suddenly a voice that sounded suspiciously like Lesley's, asked her internally if it was simply the right thing to do, even if she faced the very possibility that Emilia would only have a husband in name in the future. The love that she had dreamt of her whole life, would never come to fruition.
So instead of making a response, a certain measure of relief touched her when Evi continued speaking, shaking her head when she suddenly apologized, raising a brow when Evi mentioned jilted lover.
But she felt weary, suddenly very weary. Decision making had never been her forte, and it was the pure reason why Emilia had a wardrobe that could probably dress everyone in Athenia twice over. She had never felt this tired in her life, and even her curiosity on Evi's words of being a jilted lover, Emilia could not seem to rouse the will to say anything more then a simple "It's alright."
Because in truth, she needed more then this. That she did not even feel jealous over Elias having someone else, was a clear sign that Emilia had been lying to herself, that she barely liked Elias, much less thinking she could learn to love him in the future. So instead, she also stood, collecting the fabric of her chiton before shaking her head. "Do not apologize, Lady Evi, you have given me much to think about... but perhaps it is time for you to leave." Emilia rarely dismissed someone, but the circumstances weren't exactly normal for her. "I appreciate your company Lady Evi, but I... find I have many things to think about. Thank you, however, for your view and... insight, about what has been happening behind me. I value that greatly."

Once upon a time, Evi had dreamt of much the same things Emilia no doubt thought about. She was a girl, after all, with warm blood flowing in her veins - so whenever elliptical conversations about men were abound, Evi had always joined in with gusto. She had described her perfect man many times, both in terms of looks and personality. Now, she realised she had always been describing Elias, even when she had barely known him.
Elias had come into her life at the perfect moment, at least by Elias’ reckoning. When she was old enough to reciprocate and young enough to still be naive towards the world. He had been the perfect gentleman towards her, the perfect lover, everything she had ever wanted. A part of her, she was somewhat ashamed to admit to even herself, still wanted it back. Ever since the engagement had been announced, even after seeing her, Evi had started convincing her that being a paramour of the King would not be such a bad thing. She could keep him in her life, as a husband in all but name.
That wouldn’t be so bad.
Even after everything he had done, after what Evi knew of him and his machinations, she couldn’t completely let go of him. Her first love, that was what he was. He would forever hold a special place in her heart. Because to love someone wasn’t to be blind to their faults, but to love them despite them, that was what Evi had come to conclude.
Yet, notwithstanding this love, she couldn’t have let Emilia walk blindly into this match. They were kindred spirits, of a sort. Evi would never have much in common with the girl who was supposed to rule the nation, but they were of an age together, and that was enough to make Evi step forward.
Evi inclined her head at the princess’ dismissal, unsurprised. “Of course, Your Highness,” she murmured in response. She stood and pushed herself into a low curtsey, forcing a smile onto her lips before turning away. She started retreating towards the royal palace before she stopped and considered, then she turned back to Emilia, biting her lower lip as she did so. “I don’t believe Lord Elias has always been this way. Nor do I believe he hasn’t got the best interests of Athenia still in his heart." Her expression faltered, "He’s a jilted man in his own right - he was heir to the throne until a few months ago. Whatever he’s doing, I have to believe his out of love for a nation he truly believes is rightfully his. I still believe that.” Without waiting for a response, Evi dipped down into a final curtsey and left the princess to her thoughts.
"I have to." She whispered to herself as she left.
