His family was exhausted by the time all of the performances were done, especially his children. He couldn’t blame them, the excitement of the past few hours would have been a lot for the small children, and likely his wife would have been at their same level. Sometimes her excitement and wonder over things that seemed a lot more common to Khufu still caught him off guard. She had made Egypt her home so well that it was all too easy for him to forget she had not lived her entire life there with him.
“Of course my love.” He said when his wife asked if he would be returning. He still felt awake himself, he could likely stay out much longer and probably get himself into some trouble while he was at it, but as much as Khufu liked to drink and gamble and stay up all night, he also loved staying in with his family, and this felt like one of those nights where he would rather stay in.
He looked over at Mayet as Kahi offered for the woman to stay the night. He had no problems with that, his wife’s best friend was always welcome in their home, she had done much for Kahi since the young woman had travelled to Egypt to marry an older man, and she always helped with the children when she stayed as well. Khufu was more than happy for his wife to have friends outside of their marriage.
He couldn’t provide her all of the companionship she needed after all, friends were as important as a spouse.
“No imposition at all.” Khufu chimed in when Mayet accepted the offer to stay at their house for the night.
“I’ll handle putting the kids to sleep for the night, to give you two time to talk about how handsome and dashing I am.” He teased with a big grin, though his offer to wrangle the children for the night was a genuine one.
With that, Khufu did a count to make sure they did in fact have all the children, and then began to lead them out of the circus grounds and back towards home. As tempting as the wine that most of the merchants were selling was, he made no move to stop for any more of it. He would remain sober, at least until the kids were asleep.

Azarion was up last, the night was getting late and people were getting tired, but he knew that once he got his beasts on the stage and people watched as the large man won the battle against the savage animals, their attention would be grabbed.
When everyone else was done, there was a moment of theatrics as several slaves lit large braziers full of fire all at the same time, the flames bursting upwards in a large fireball before settling to a bright crackling, lighting up the stage in it’s entirety. Unlike some of the other performers, Azarion wanted all eyes on him, and everyone to see exactly what was happening.
There were no tricks about his performance. Everything that happened was real, and at any moment one of his creatures could get the upper hand and tear a limb off, or worse.
The cats had already been seen, he had used those to entice the crowds into the circus, so they would not be joining him on the stage at the moment.
He stepped into the light on the stage, immediately hearing the murmurs through the crowd as they looked at the savage man in front of them. While he normally stuck out due to his size and his foreign looks, he always played it up for his shows. Wearing nothing but what was essentially a short Shendyt made of the hide and fur of his own animals, ones that had died of old age or ones that he had had to kill for disobedience. His entire upper body and most of his legs were left uncovered, no shoes covering his feet.
His tattoos and scars all stood out heavily in the flickering light of the flames.
As if that wasn’t enough, he had painted his face with a dark blue, nearly black, colouring made from berries, thick stripes running across his entire face and down his neck. He played the role of savage from Lands Afar well.
He lifted his arms in the air and let out a loud and vicious shout, intended to strike fear and excitement through the crowds. Dropping his hands, he motioned for the slaves to bring the first animal.
A crocodile was brought in, secured with rope around it’s mouth and in a wooden cage, the slaves still looked absolutely terrified of the scaled beast. They dropped it off quickly on the stage with him and hurried off, not wishing to stick around for what was coming next.
Azarion easily reached down and popped open the cage, grabbing the animal by the tail, he yanked it out, the animal letting out a muffled hiss of anger.
He set a hand on it’s snout, using the other to untie the rope and let it drop. He let the beasts’ snout go and the crocodile immediately snapped it’s jaws at him, Azarion managing to get his hand out of it’s way before it could grab on.
“Hey!” He shouted in his native language, all his beasts had been trained in the foreign language, to prevent anyone else from being able to interfere with any commands should they speak during a show.
The crocodile settled and Azarion went on with his show. When he addressed the audience it was in a heavily accented Coptic, sharing facts of the animals as he showed their pure strength and capability to maim and kill. Captivating them with the very real dangers the animals posed to not only him, but also to them if they chose to turn on the audience.
Once the crocodiles were done, he had them taken away and brought out the mongoose. A small break from the terror of the large crocodiles, the mongoose were not without their own dangers, but the biggest excitement of them, was when he had one fight against a venomous snake. Not one of Kesi’s of course, she would be pissed, simply a wild snake he had found outside specifically for this show.
And last but not least, were his absolute favourites. Once his mongoose were put away, Azarion was joined on stage by his pack of hyenas, or at least some of them. They had no restraints, no cages, he simply relied on his command over them to keep them from attacking.
The hyena show consisted of cute tricks such as taking a piece of meat from between Azarion’s own teeth in a gentle manner, to the destruction of a stuffed dummy made of thick hide and straw. He liked to show both sides of the hyenas, companion and killer.
When it was all said and done, he soaked in the applause and cheers, bowing as his hyenas dropped their heads in a sort of bow as well as his command. And he walked off the stage feeling fantastic.
Nem had to be proud of that showing.
He would find out later, for now he would see his animals back to their containment areas and fed for the evening.

Nenet stopped when Nia did and crossed her arms, hugging herself. She glanced around surreptitiously, wondering if they were about to be very naughty and steal a horse they could easily pay for. Ha. Genius sister. Nenet grinned at the thought of being such a bad girl but the grin dropped when Nia pulled out the pipe.
”Surprise!”
Nenet blinked at it. Well that certainly wasn’t something to break a horse out of horsey jail with. Her gaze flicked up to Nia and back to the pipe. “Uh..” she uncrossed one arm and gestured with a lazy flick of her finger at the pipe. “Th-th-that-t-’s th-th-the-e s-s-s-s-surp-p-p-ris-se?”
“You want to smoke a little bit?” the conspiratorial way Nia presented it made Nenet pause in her derision. It was like she was being let into a little secret, like Nia actually wanted to do something besides fight...It might not be stealing horses, so obviously this wouldn’t be as fun, but Nenet still hesitated. This was to make her look like a fool, wasn’t it?
“You think the fire dancers were cool? A couple hits of this, and the rest of the show will be on a whole different level. And hey, everything slows down so much, it might even cure your stutter for a while.”
It wasn’t the promise of the drugged out show they could watch. It was the stutter that made Nenet snatch the pipe as soon as Nia offered it to her. The sleepy way her sister looked should have made Nenet say no but she didn’t. She sucked straight in. Her lungs seized, her eyes watered, she realized this was a massive mistake, and then she coughed out all her smoke in wheezing sputters.
“What do you think? Might feel nice to loosen up.”
“L-l-l-oos-s-s-s-sen-n up-p?” she might have stuttered even without the smoke making her fan herself. Her chest felt like it was on fire. What happened? Did she do it wrong? But she decided to take another hit because dammit she wanted rid of the stutter. This time she tried to hold the breath like Nia had but she kept coughing embarrassingly loud and gagged out a “YAK”

It seemed Nenet might choke her lungs right up, Nia sympathetically patting the younger woman on the back even as she tried not to laugh. Okay, so maybe this was her sister’s first time doing this. Why would she have thought any different? Well, better with her than in some back alley opium den like Nia had. That night was still a haze, and she wasn’t exactly… proud of what she could remember she’d done in her intoxication. At least Nenet would be a heck of a lot safer with Nia to watch over her than she herself had been.
Well, depending on one’s definition of safety. There were probably quite a few who wouldn’t think to call Nia ‘safe,’ but hey, if there was one thing she knew, it was drugs. There’d be no one better to help Nenet through it if she started reacting negatively.
“The burn’ll get better in a minute,” she said, remembering back to when she was still a novice and smoking was still painful. “We’ll grab some water or wine or something on the way back. Should’ve thought of that, sorry.” Taking the pipe back from Nenet after she took her second hit, she cautioned, “Don’t overdo it, or you’ll never want to do it again.”
Then again, that might be better for her in the long run, but this was supposed to be a fun surprise, not a ‘make Nenet freak out for the next couple hours’ surprise. Taking another hit from it herself before tucking it back away in her bag, she released a long breath as her shoulders relaxed. Turning another lazy smile on Nenet, she asked, “What do you think? Pretty nice, right? Wait ‘til we get back to the show!”
Hearing a rustling nearby, her eyes widened as she grabbed her younger sibling’s arm. Holding a finger to her lips to caution her to be quiet, Nia stifled a secretive giggle as she started tugging her away. Just in time too—as soon as they were clear of their little hidey-hole, she saw a man poke his head out of one of the nearby tents and make a face at the smell. Snorting, she continued to lead Nenet away until they were out of sight once more.
Checking her sister to make sure she wasn’t too out of it and that she could still walk on her own, she nodded a little. “Let’s head back,” she urged, quietly proud she’d been able to convince Nenet to do something so out of character. “We don’t want to miss the rest!”
Linking their arms, she led them back inside for the second act, just as enthralled as she had been throughout the rest of the show. Why couldn’t the circus be here all the time?

Linking their arms, she led them back inside for the second act, just as enthralled as she had been throughout the rest of the show. Why couldn’t the circus be here all the time?
Adrenaline rushed through Feiyan’s veins as she accompanied the rest of the Clique backstage. She congratulated them on their performance and told them not to drink too much that evening because they had another show tomorrow. As they had all played their parts to perfection, there would be no practice session the next day. There wasn’t anything they needed to improve on.
Her daring surprise was not mentioned, nor did anyone ask about it. While she and Tau watched Azariôn and his animals close out the show, she heard a few performers whispering about the shock she had given them, but nobody approached her about it. Nor did she see the ringmaster. If he planned to reprimand her, she figured it would be done publicly so that nobody else would contemplate a stunt like that. Or maybe he had enjoyed it and wanted her to do it every night. Feiyan had no idea what would come of the impromptu trick she and Tau had performed, and at the moment it didn’t matter.
Because it had unfolded exactly as planned.
As the show came to an end, she slipped out the back and she and Tau strolled to her tent. A line of slaves were already waiting with baskets of various sizes full of gifts from her secret and not-so-secret admirers. After saying goodnight to her partner in crime, she entered and told the slaves to deposit their baskets next to the flap.
As more baskets continued to trickle in, she began to open them one by one. Like she did every night, she thanked the gods that she had been freed from slavery so that she could keep all the beautiful things she received.

Why did Nia think this was fun? Coughing was not in the least bit fun but her chest calmed a little and the world felt different. Tilted, almost, but without anything moving in a weird direction. Nenet languidly smiled at Nia and had the impression that, yes, things were fine. “What do you think? Pretty nice, right? Wait ‘til we get back to the show!”
“K-kay,” Nenet said dreamily. She didn’t balk when Nia grabbed her by the arm and only shook her head when her sister put a finger up, signaling for quiet. In fact, Nenet felt sure that she should make that sign straight back to Nia, just to make sure that she was quiet, too. Her finger slithered up her own face and finally came to rest against her smiling lips. “SHHHHHHH” she cautioned.
Nia pulled on her to get her moving and Nenet sailed along, gaze slipping and sliding along the vibrant colors of the tents surrounding them. Yet again she was looking for a horse but found that striped cat again. Big kitty. Soft kitty. Little ball of fur...warm kitty...soft kitty...purr, purr, purr….a love song, an ode to the kitty in the cage...Nenet drifted towards it and would have been in real danger of climbing into the cage if Nia hadn’t been there to keep her on course.
”Let’s head back. We don’t want to miss the rest.” They walked clumsily arm in arm and Nenet purred at Nia.
“Mmmmmm...nnnoooooo….mmiss nnoththing,” she agreed. They managed to get back inside to catch the very end of the act, where crowds roared, standing on their feet. Nenet shrank against Nia, wrinkling her nose. Ugh. People. They enjoyed the rest of the show, though, Nenet more so than she would have otherwise and when it was over, collected the stragglers of their family and headed home. Home to bed, home to possible hangovers, and partially remembered fun.

It would never be an imposition to Kahi, to have Mayet over. The woman had become more a sister then a friend to her, far more then Kahi ever felt for her own blood siblings who felt more like colleagues then anything. She knew that technically, Khufu would be unlikely to disapprove. He had always been fully supportive of whatever his wife wanted, and respectful of the safe she wanted. It was close to unheard of in their day and age of course, but Khufu was an anomaly Kahi was glad to have met and married.
Grinning when Khufu said as much, and even offered to put the children to bed, she rolled her eyes but laughed at her husband's tease. "Yes, and I'm sure you'll be eavesdropping all night, won't you?" she retorted. It was an easy camraderie between her and her husband, the kind she had wanted exactly when she had chosen to leave Judea for him.
Threading her arm through Mayet's, she fell into step next to her friend, making a mental note to give her husband proper thanks once she was given the opportunity. It meant a lot to her that she had the chance to converse with Mayet, and the young wife was eager to catch up with her best friend, and everything that was occurring in her life under the roof of a great General in Egypt. The life of one as Mayet fascinated and made her curious all at the same time, and it was as if Kahi had a never-ending stream of questions for her.
