Celine couldn't believe she hadn't realized it before last month.
How had she never known she loved Maximus of Laconia? Or, at least, how had she never realized it would be easy to fall in love with him?
Ever since the fire that had destroyed her childhood, Celine had had trust issues, and that included with almost anyone. It wasn't only nobles or those who could potentially take advantage of Celine's father's political knowledge. She was afraid, in a sense, that if she made very many new friends, she would lose them, or at least come close, the way she had lost her old life.
It was true that she had been almost inexplicably drawn to him from the first, when, despite her dislike of being touched by strangers, she let him kiss her hand for luck. though she hid it for custom's sake, since she knew of so many, both in Greece and others, that did require touching. Being the daughter of someone who worked for a Master Informer was mentally as well as physically exhausting sometimes, but sacrifices had to be made in the name of diplomacy. Yet it hadn't seemed so bad, at least not after she realized that even though she only knew his name and a bit of his exuberant personality at the time, she liked him because of it. He had been, in a sense, a reminder of the part of herself she had lost and wanted to regain.
He still was, but particularly after the awkwardness of her missing the Hephaestus festival last month, he was more. Though she missed the festival every year, she always felt guilty, feeling it was a missed opportunity to make new friends and connections like a good daughter of someone like her father should. But she had never been gladder that she missed it, after hearing what had happened there this year.
Perhaps, they somehow understood each other now on an even deeper level than before.
But even if she had known what to do with the feelings she had just realized were there, she was unsure that he would notice if she did. And maybe she just needed someone to pour out all her fears to, but a talk with Adelpha seemed to help with that more often than not. She walked this time rather than riding, hoping the extra time it would take to arrive at Adelpha's house would calm her raging thoughts, but it didn't work. She managed a polite enough greeting, but she was troubled, and almost angry that she was troubled by this.
In a way, she wished she'd never realized. What was the point if she didn't know what to do about it?

Ever since she had told her father "No" for what felt like the hundredth time in regards to his want of her to join the army, Adelpha had lived alone in a little beach house. Her mother wasn't entirely pleased with the idea, but she wasn't going to try to change her daughter's mind. She was their only child afterall and her chances of survival were higher by not going to war.
The beach house was small, but was more than enough for a girl living by herself. Each room was cluttered with art supplies and half finished projects. But it was an organized mess and there wasn't any need for her to have it any other way. Visitors were far and in between. Most only came to ask directions. Adelpha's only ventures into town were to the market where she sold her art to pay for food and supplies.
Today was a different day, however. An old friend from her youth had come to her door. Adelpha eyed Celine with concern. "Are you alright? Should I put on some tea?"

Today was a different day, however. An old friend from her youth had come to her door. Adelpha eyed Celine with concern. "Are you alright? Should I put on some tea?"
"Thank you." Celine sniffled, near tears. "If worse comes to worse, I may need it. You know the steam helps if I feel about to have a lung attack." At times like this, one could never tell if she would have one or not. "I think...I think I may be a bit overwrought. How could I have never realized? And even if I had, sooner, would it have come to anything, and is it any use hoping for it to now?" Celine had explained her situation to her friends regarding her future marriage. Both because of the concern she felt for her sister Rhais and because of the childhood fire which could have been politically motivated- as she now suspected it had been- her father preferred that if possible his children find love, although his own marriage had been an arranged one. But when one's life was potentially under threat, he realized it was easier to trust at least a friend to protect them.
She knew her father would therefore probably betroth her to Maximus in a heartbeat. But his father would probably like it if he were betrothed to someone with more money.
And she would talk about that too, but all of that was pointless if he didn't know she existed as more than a friend.
"After the Hephaestus festival last month- after Max told me what happened there- somehow, that day I realized that I think I'm in love with him and I don't know what to do about it, not in any sense at all!" And in another year, he'd likely be off to his first battle, anyway. Then would it even matter?

Adelpha invited Celine inside, quickly moving some of her brushes and canvases off the chairs before going about to get the tea started. A little fire was already burning in the hearth and so she poured some water from her water pitcher into an iron pot and hung it overtop to boil. As Celine rattled on about her woes, she took a couple of brass cups from her shelf and fetched some herbs that were hanging to dry in her kitchen window.
Her mind was swimming as she tried to figure out everything that was going on. It wasn't as though Adelpha was around any gossip. She kept to herself mostly. "Slow down, Celine. What's happened at the festival? I've only seen Max once in a very long time. All he did was come inside and fall asleep on the couch. We hardly spoke at all." It was minutes after he got into her house that he just fell asleep. Adelpha figured that she bored him, so she went off to do a little beachcombing. When she returned, he was gone. It was almost as though he was just a ghost pasding through. Or perhaps he had no intention of being there at all. No doubt his bumping into her in town was just an accident.
A lot of people avoided her, unless they wanted to buy her art. But she was fine with that. Adelpha didn't need to be reminded about what a disappointment she was to her Father.

Celine tried to calm herself, but she was trembling a little, if only because the force of her realization had been so fierce. "There was a fire at the Hephaestus festival. I-I always feel weird not going, regardless of what happened in my childhood with my family's house fire. It always feels like a missed opportunity to strengthen connections. But this time..." She shivered. Maybe she needed the tea for more than just the steam and a calming influence.
She managed a shaky breath. "It seemed to have scared him too, and I don't have to tell you I know how that feels. Not to mention we both could have lost a good friend. Only now...." She almost didn't have the words.
"Why is it that sometimes people never realize how important things are until they almost lose them?" It wasn't really a question she expected Adelpha to answer, but it did seem to put words to feelings she must have had for awhile and not been able to express. "Who knows how long I've felt like this? I only know that I do." She sighed and tried to smile.
"I'm sorry. Do you have a blanket handy? I'm a little cold." Being cold in Teleos frightened her a little, she had to admit, though she knew it was probably from her shock. Still, what was normal now? It seemed nothing would ever be quite the same again. She tried to take the focus off of herself for a minute so as not to seem rude. "Have you found any new treasures on the beach to use in your art lately?" she asked, genuinely curious. Celine still missed the views of the sea in Taengea, but she loved beaches regardless.

"A fire?" That wasn't good. No doubt a lot of people could have gotten hurt. How the fire had started or how big it had gotten was a mystery to her. And asking details of it would only disturb Celine even more, so Adelpha refrained from doing so.
Instead she thought on how quickly her artwork would catch light and burn, with the oils being so flammable. Her whole livelyhood would literally be up in smoke. And then she'd be left to grovel to her Father.
Hopefully that would never happen.
"I don't know..." Adelpha shrugged in response to Celine's question about losing people. She hadn't loved anyone yet, not even close, and given her age now she figured she never would. Such things were better left for others. Life moves on, childhood friends grow up and lead their own seperate lives. Only Adelpha seemed to refrain from changing. She remained stagnant like a boulder and equally as stubborn.
The question about a blanket pulled her from her thoughts. "Yes, of course." Adelpha stepped out of the room to her little bedroom and pulled out a blanket from the box at the foot of it. She carried it over, unfolding it along the way and draped it over Celine's shoulders. "The tea will be ready soon. As far as treasures go, I've found some pretty shells and coral. Though I might start gathering a bunch of sand and see if I can start sculpting with it. I wouldn't be able to sell that, but it's good practice for clay." And it tested her patience.
Adelpha checked on the water in the pot. It was steaming and starting to bubble. Nearly ready. "What keeps you occupied these days?"

Celine was grateful that Adelpha didn't ask a single question, at least for now. She needed to compose herself, and was equally grateful for the change of subject. She had to think for a minute, as nothing new had occupied her lately except for realizing that she loved Maximus. She blushed, not exactly ashamed, but embarrassed to- at least for now- have a one-track mind. To Adelpha's question about what kept her occupied these days, she could have easily replied, I think you might know the answer to that.
Instead, she tried to think of other things.
"Reading philosophy, of course. And spending time with Rhais. And painting. And reading poetry."
Which made her think of love poetry. Which made her think of Maximus once again.
Painting did that too, but not as much, though she grinned a little, wondering how he'd feel if he knew she wished she could paint a naked portrait of him. He might not have been the standard of Greek beauty to some people- with the possible exception of his musculature- but Maximus was beautiful to her, in a way he'd never quite been until now, at least not that she'd actually realized.
Adelpha's mention of shells and sand made her think of something else she thought her friend might like to try to use in an art project.
"Mayne pebbles, too?" she suggested. "If you could find enough, they might make an interesting mosaic of some kind.Maybe pressed into some clay?" Celine would like to try something like that herself once she got some time where she wasn't feeling quite so mentally disoriented. She tightened the blanket a little more around her shoulders and cuddled into its warmth.

Adelpha was, of course, oblivious to what it was like to fall in love with someone. She had no idea of what it felt like or how it took over a person's life. And it wasn't as though anyone had felt anything for her. Or at the very least, no one had ever told her that they did, nor act peculiar around her. Even if by some bizarre circumstance somebody did fall for her, she didn't even know how she'd even respond. Adelpha's contact with people was usually for the same thing; purchasing of food and the selling of her artwork. There wasn't really a lot outside of that. But she was fine living alone and on her own. Life was far less complicated that way.
"I'd like to see your paintings some time. Mine are...." she gestured to her living room. "..all over the place. I tend to paint the ocean the most. There's a lot to inspire me just outside my door."
Celine's suggestion for mosaics out of pebbles and clay caused her to tilt her head in thought. "Hmm...that's a possibility. But it would be hard for me to carry around and sell. I don't own any carts or horses to help." All of her artwork for sale she carried with her to the markets. It wasn't much, but she tended to go to them a few times in the week.
Adelpha finished preparing the tea, pouring the boiled water into cups filled with herbs. It wasn't the most flavourful of teas. Or at least nothing as tastey as what Celine would be used to, but it was good enough to warm oneself with, without tasting horrid.
She carried the cups over, giving one to Celine before sitting back on a chair. Taking a sip, she glanced around a little, almost as if she was taking in a memory. "I think that I might leave Colchis for a while. Do a bit of travelling and get more inspiration."

Celine was in her element- well, one of them- as they discussed paintings and art projects. She nodded when Adelpha said she wanted to see her paintings. "I'll bring by a few next time- there have been a few over the past month or so." She blushed again, and grinned for the first time in awhile that she could remember. Was it because realizing she was in love with Max gave her new inspiration? Perhaps. She wondered if Adelpha could find someone who suited her- not because she expected her friend to marry, but the thought did make her curious what sort of person Adelpha might choose if she had the notion.
The steam from the tea helped greatly in calming her, but when Adelpha mentioned possibly leaving, Celine nearly choked. Spluttering, she looked at her friend, eyes wide. As much as she'd gained confidence in the time she knew them, the thought of having her friends apart from her made her nervous. The memories of so long ago had never quite left her. She wondered if they ever truly would.
"I understand...getting away gives me inspiration as well, though I can't always write or paint when I'm attending a banquet or something. Truthfully, I don't think I've ever really been on a trip, not the kind you seem to mean. Only court visits it seems like, no matter the country. But...but you'd come back, right?" She had to be sure. Now that Adelpha was on her own, what would she decide to do? Celine herself would leave Colchis if she could, if it hadn't been for her lung condition and her tenuous safety- though the fear of being found had faded. (She'd suffered somewhat of a setback in emotional healing after that horrible incident in Eubocris, but that was two years ago now.) She missed the sight of the sea, even if the ocean captivated her too. "Not that I'd ever dream of holding you back," she assured Adelpha. "I know how it is to dream, and to be held back."

Adelpha was taken aback as Celine started choking the moment that she mentioned that she wanted to leave Colchis. No doubt such an idea was unexpected, but for all that she knew, it didn't really matter where she was to others.
"Oh I've never been to a banquet or to a court, so I don't know what that's like. I can just imagine that it's a lot of food, dancing and people pairing up in different rooms." All for sex of course. Every noble man that she had ever come across was a bit of a carnal addict. But that wasn't to say that she had met many. There had only been a few, yet they were mostly just going through the market. One did invite her to his home to drop off her painting and of course, just for sex before shooing her off into the night to walk home. It didn't matter. She used him as much as he used her, only her uses were of memories of his physique for a planned sculpture whenever she could get some clay.
She sipped her tea and pondered on whether or not she'd come back. It was hard to say for she didn't even know where she'd be going as of yet. "I think so. I don't know, really. It all depends on what happens. I'll bring a dagger with me, so that I'll at least have some protection. I've never been away from home before, so I don't really know what it's like. But I'll be sure to try to get somewhere where it's safe." Adelpha didn't even know if she was going by foot or by ship. Her plan was all in the beginning stage. "At least I wouldn't run the risk of seeing my Father and have him proclaim his disappointment in me." No doubt he'd have her arrested too.

In a way, Celine greatly appreciated Adelpha's change of subject, knowing that her friend might be giving her time to compose herself after the shock of the news that she could be leaving Colchis. Celine couldn't blame Adelpha for wanting to see more of the world, but she shook her head at the idea that anyone except the very insipid might enjoy court. Granted, she did enjoy certain aspects of it- the food for one thing- but how much else was there to really enjoy for free spirits like herself and Adelpha?
"Sometimes it can be fun- the food and occasionally the dancing, if you happen to be paired with someone you like- or someone who will at least talk civilly to you. But otherwise, it's nothing much more than a lot of pressure- especially for someone like me. Nobles often tend to stick to their own, and while in some ways it can be a relief- myself not knowing much about what they might face despite my horrible terror as a child- it can also make court rather awkward. Not to mention the clothes you often have to wear! Wool can often be very hot, if it's not winter, and linen chlamys or chitons are often the most comfortable for me personally- as well as no shoes at all. I think I'm a nature girl at heart- like Artemis, despite my devotion to Hermes. I wear slippers often in court, but even those aren't always comfortable. I often wish I had a friend or two there, but you are exceedingly lucky that you don't have to go!"
She nodded sympathetically, though, at Adelpha's desire not to have her father disappointed in her.
"Sometimes I wonder if everyone but my family is disappointed in me- except for you, Basil, and Max, of course."
