Dinner had been an ‘orchestrated’ disaster, each course served only intensified the air of unpleasantness and thickened the almost suffocating tensions within the Leventi household. It had been purposely designed that way by Fotios – why, still alluded Eirini to some extent, but as always she had gone along with her husbands plan without pause or hesitation. Fotios’ mind was a complex web of schemes and logic and sometimes his plans of action were so abstract that all Eirini could do was do as she was told – she’d learned long ago that it was best not to try and unravel Fotios’ labyrinth mind, lest one longed for madness. Yet, as complex as her husband could be, he was certainly seldom wrong and even on those rare occasions that he was, Eirini could not recall a single instance where his overall goal was lost. It was just one of the many aspects of Fotios that Eirini greatly admired.
Playing her part at dinner had not been overtly difficult. As gentrified as Eirini had become since her marriage, her lack of stiffness and limited refinery was exactly what made her appealing (besides from her beauty) and exactly why the evening had progressed the way it had. Eirini had never been the type of woman to simply ‘sit back’, she had to fight for everything she had back in the day and had become naturally defensive because of it. Even the mere fabrication of Xene being a real threat to her was enough to stoke the flames of protectiveness and like a threatened viper, she had struck venomously.
The dust had settled now, the evening shared between the three of them a few weeks in the past, yet the thought had just dawned on Eirini that she too had a reputation to uphold – one that she was confident Xene wouldn’t try to usurp but complacency was next to foolishness, thus she couldn’t be too careful. Besides, the woman was already after her husband, it seemed only logical that she might also go after her social standing – especially following Xene’s recent title; a baroness within her own right would make her a very popular figure at court. Perhaps even more so than when her brother had sat on the throne.
It was with the intention of extending the olive branch that Eirini had travelled to visit with Xene that day. She did not expect them to become friendly, but she could not also deny the slightly sadistic pleasure that surfaced at the thought of them becoming just that, friends. More so about how that would conflict with her feelings for Fotios – would she squirm and shudder with every sordid thought that popped into her pretty little head? Or chastise herself for every ache and flutter of her longing passion – the possibilities were endless, but she was also getting ahead of herself somewhat.
As was customary, Eirini had sent word ahead of her arrival, but she was nonetheless surprised to see the Xene’s chambers abuzz with activity. “My, my, I’ve seem to have arrived at the most inopportune of moments, your highness.” Eirini announced her own arrival, a small smile curling at her lips as she inclined her head towards the younger woman. “I had thought you might have been expecting my visit … but if now is a bad time?” Eyes shifted momentarily to the crates being brought in.

Xene was an early riser by heart. She could not imagine wasting away her day by sleeping until the late hours as her brother used to do from time to time. That was not something she could really get behind. Unless she was feeling ill, the princess was up with the dawn and down with the moon was high in the night sky. She rarely needed so much sleep, finding herself actually more tired the more she got. Her body's natural clock kept her waking at the same time each morning, so when the announcement of Lady Eirini's intent to visit her was given, the princess had long been up and moving about, Kalliope and Cilissa bringing her her morning repast before she sent a small missive to Basilides to start her morning.
Then, settled upon her favorite chaise and sipping from her cup of wine, she dug into some of the reading that was required of her to learn her new province. Messenis was a province after her very own heart and Xene was profoundly grateful that Emilios had taken her rejection of Euttica in careful and complete stride, allowing her to place her own stock in her new home. Both the Mikaelidas manor and her new province would become her places of residence. The princess felt she and her family were encroaching too closely upon the new king and queen's family, and having Queen Elise still in the Palati was clearly poor for her health and sanity.
So the princess was of two minds. Work and preparation.
But the real surprise of the morning was a package that was announced only moments before Lady Eirini's arrival. The princess had taken the missive from the servant who had brought it to her, her gaze drifting toward the crates in stark curiosity that she could not sate yet. She liked presents and she was truly curious of what she would find in these crates.
Lady Eirini's voice broke through her thoughts, however, and Xene looked up quickly, a smile breaking across her features in an instant. She was not as pensive about this visit as she thought she may have been, wanting to make up with the Leventi lady more and more with each passing day. "Lady Eirini," Xene greeted warmly, moving over as she tucked the missive under her arm. She gave a slight bow to the lady and then motioned her further into her chambers. "I seem to have been sent some gifts from... I don't actually know where," she trailed off, pulling the missive back out.
"I have not read the missive yet," Xene said with a pretty smile. "Would you like to sit? Have some wine? I was just going to read this and have the crates opened, if you'd like to join me for such an event of mystery and curiosity," Xene motioned Lady Eirini further into her chambers. One of the servants moved quickly to get Lady Leventi a cup of wine to enjoy while she languished on one of the other lounges.

Eirini was not entirely sure whether Xene's chipper demeanour irked her or not – but it was certainly a surprise. The air at dinner had been thick with awkward tensions and strikingly blunt questions that had brought a flush upon the cheeks of the princess and a smirk upon the lips of Eirini. It was undoubtedly callous and cruel to delight in the unease of one's guest, but the Lady rationed that the fact Xene was trying to fuck her husband was equally, if not more, callous and cruel – the lingering fact that it was all a game was irrelevant to her.
Yet as much as Eirini liked to toy with people – the sensation of another squirming under her quick wit and scathing remarks almost arousing – it could also lead to incredibly dull company. Thus, Xene's lack of tension with her very presence was equal parts infuriating and enlightening; dare she say she was even impressed with the princesses ability to bounce back, as it were.
"A secret admirer perhaps?" For a brief moment, she considered Fotios but the idea was almost laughable. Eirini knew her husband, his romantic gestures were limited (even under the guise of a romantic). "Your highness must have plenty..." A smile stretched across her features as she accepted Xene's offer, "...and I do love a good mystery." Perhaps this afternoon wouldn't be as tedious as she had initially thought.
Positioning herself upon the chaise, Eirini took hold of the offered cup and brought it to her lips – she was good at making herself at home. As a woman who received many gifts herself, Eirini would appreciate the flurry of excitement that the princess must have felt and she waiting eagerly for her to read the missive. "Well? Do they reveal themselves?"

The princess smiled, pleased that Lady Eirini was so inclined to stay even after their previously awkward encounter at dinner a few weeks before. "I'm wondering the same thing," the princess mused softly, "Perhaps Lord Rafail of Marikas," she mused pleasantly, fondly remembering their encounter upon his last visit to Taengea just recently. They had gotten on well and he had bought her a gift then before she had taken him off on an adventure that he likely wouldn't forget. It was not out of the realm of her thoughts that maybe he would be sending her a gift now.
Reaching for the missive that accompanied the crates of gifts for the princess, she opened the letter and read it in earnest, her smile growing with each passing moment. "They're from Lady Marietta of Antonis in Athenia," Xene said with a smile that only grew more bright with each breath. "They're paintings," she said with a pretty glint in her eye. "And the young lady wishes to visit Taengea and the university," she mused lightly, trailing across the floor toward the crates that were in the process of being unpacked.
The first painting was removed from its crate and Xene straightened up, absolutely floored by the detail of the painting of the Athenian harbor that the young lady had illustated as being crafted in her letter. "Oh," she said softly, mostly to herself, bringing her fingers to her lips in deep thought and consideration of the item. Motioning the slave to bring the painting back toward where Lady Eirini was settled on one of her kline's the princess stood beside the beautiful painting and looked to her guest on her opinion. "The first of the two paintings she's sent. The harbor in Athenia. Isn't it beautiful?" she asked with a bright smile.
"Do you enjoy art, Lady Eirini?" she suddenly asked, wondering if she was just being far too excited about such a gift or if her guest would find equal joy in sharing such a moment with the princess. She could only hope that the effort to offer an olive branch wouldn't be wasted today.
