Celine was visibly upset as she waited for her friends in the agora. She'd asked Max, Adelpha, and Essa to meet her here to discuss a private matter. In truth, the location was not as private, per se, as she would have liked it to be, but she wanted to find a way to tell all of them of this sudden development at once, and she couldn't think of any other place where it would be socially acceptable for them all to meet.
She didn't even know how this rumor had gotten started! It was true that the wind had been awful on the day it occurred, and her chiton had apparently not been folded correctly when she put it on, but not enough for her to notice.
All she could think was that when she had to be in Athenia for appearance in Praratios. Somehow, someone important- or in contact with someone important- must have seen her, and someone she'd stayed with in Athenia had alerted her. Somehow the rumor had gotten out of hand. She knew people tended to talk about anything and everything interesting, but nothing like this had ever happened to her personally. When what had actually happened was a little unintentional exposure, they were saying she'd posed stark naked! And where the part about it being in front of an artist had originated, Celine could only begin to speculate.
All she knew was that she had wanted her friends to know the truth, and preferably before it spread too terribly far around the court of Colchis, if it hadn't already. She would ask Essa if it had. Perhaps a kafenion would be the best location for their meeting, but she'd ask Essa just where the best, most secluded place might be for all four of them to go. For now, she was waiting by a column near the pools, watching as people swam and hoping the water would soothe her spirit. She knew she'd had to leave Taengea for safety reasons, but she missed the sea terribly sometimes. A pool only did so much to help when looked at and did not have the comforting pattern of the cresting waves.

Adelpha got the message to meet with Celine. Though she had no idea what for. Her life on the beach was secluded for the most part. Most contact that she ever has with others is whenever she went to the market, either to sell some of her artwork or to purchase food and supplies. Her contact with others was minimal at best. It was a far cry from her childhood when she lived at home and had friends to play with. But Adelpha didn't mind the solitude. It seemed to be a lot better than all the crisis' that Celine had been going through. And no doubt it was far better than having to fight in the wars.
She spotted Celine standing by a column. Adelpha furrowed her brows ever so slightly, clasping her hands behind her back in order to keep herself from fidgeting. "What's the matter? Are you hurt?" Of course she gave Celine a once over, just to be sure that she saw no injuries.

"N-not exactly," Celine stuttered. "But I could be- socially speaking- if this got around any court, Gods only know how far it's spread in Athenia, and I don't want to bring shame to my family. But you, Max, and Essa need to know the truth." There was no need to say that Basil knew already, but Celine just hadn't quite known how to tell her other friends, especially Essa. This could ruin her reputation- and potentially make her father a laughingstock- forever. Or, well, at least until the next rumor took root about somebody else.
"I'm sorry, but I don't think I can say anymore until everyone else arrives. I don't want to go over it all any more than once . That's how embarrassing it is! I was trying to think of a place where Lady Essa could be seen with us all, probably without attracting too much attention- because this could get back to the court there, but I also wanted you all to know, so that all my closest friends know the truth."
Celine couldn't keep from blushing in shame, despite the fact that she was with Adelpha, and in truth had nothing to be ashamed of. She hadn't really posed for that artist, only watched his work....
"It's a vicious rumor- but I swear it's only hearsay." Celine was starting to panic a little. "I know only Essa, and Basil are part of the court- Basil as a visitor like me- but if this got around to other places- somehow- because of my father's position, we might all be ruined. Maybe we'd even have to leave Colchis- after the strain it would cause..." Celine didn't want to think about that. Colchis would never be home, especially the court, where she might always be regarded as a relative newcomer, even after all these years. But she'd made a life here, even though it had taken her a few years to truly feel safe- and she might always be more alert when a war came. War could potentially remove all boundaries, especially if the Taengeans came here to meet before leaving. "It was an act of the gods, one might say..." What else could one call the wind?

Adelpha had no idea who Essa was, but could only guess that it was a friend. Celine was so distraught and agitated, which drew even more concern from her.
The more that Celine spoke, the more that Adelpha studied her more carefully. Her friend was spouting out statements of courts and rumours and shame. And it could all ruin her family and kick them out of the court? That would be wonderful! Then Celine could get to be in another life like she had wanted so many times when they were younger.
Yet as Adelpha tried to figure out just what was going on and just what could possibly be the matter, the less that she could come up with. Her limited knowledge of the life of a noble certainly played a part in all of that.
So she blurted out the only thing that came to mind. The only thing that made any sense to have this kind of reaction come from Celine. "Are you pregnant? Do you need some place to hide until after the child is born?" Adelpha knew that Celine was in love with Max and vice versa, yet she herself hadn't experienced anything even close to that. Nor any romance. As far as she was concerned, there was nothing special about sex at all. It was just something that people did with no commitments or strings attached. Unless of course they were married. Pregnancies were common, although with the unmarried, it was often the mothers that raised the child on their own. If ever Adelpha got pregnant she was sure that she would be one of those mothers having to fend for herself and the child. There'd be no way that her parents would approve.
Of course that could be one way to get out of being forced to go to war....

Celine tried to laugh, but it was through tears and hurt her throat to do so. "No, I'm not pregnant, but that wasn't a bad guess. You're right that it does have to do with some nudity, though. And in public, as well, so they say." Gods. If only she were a man! Normally, Celine was generally happy with her lot as a woman, even if she personally was not like very many people she knew. She had to smile, though, at thinking that if anyone else understood what it was like to have goals that were probably somewhat unique for their time, it was most likely Adelpha.
But if she were a man....
"It seems to me that men might almost be expected to be nude in public. I mean, there are gymnasiums for them to go to." Somehow or other, she had heard that that very word, gymnasium meant 'to exercise naked.'
"But if word got out- and it may have already- that I...did what some people say I did...!" Celine was so overwrought she felt she wasn't capable of speaking in a full sentence anymore. Her words had left her, even if her intense emotions had not.
"I don't know what to do...what it might do to my father's reputation." She wished she didn't have to constantly be thinking of how others were perceived because of her actions. If she'd been born in another family, perhaps her actions would affect only her own reputation. Having one's own reputation smeared was probably no picnic, either, but at least only she and she alone might have to deal with the consequences. Not to mention, in her case, there was her brother Andreas to worry about, who might one day take over her father's position working for the Taengean Master Informer.
She sighed, trying vainly to wipe her eyes. "Adelpha, you're lucky you're an only child, at least.I can't imagine my oldest brother being too happy with me, either, if this got out."
