She smiled up at him adoringly again. "After this day. I don't know if we'll ever be this honest again. We may not have a chance, and it's only because you said we were roleplaying that I'm saying this at all, but I swear by the gods every word I'm about to say is true. If you've ever believed anything I said, please believe me now."
She gulped to keep back tears, her emotions rising much too easily to the surface, though she didn't cry. "I love you... passionately and deeply and forever, and if I were the woman your father wanted for you to marry. it would make me the happiest girl in the universe. I just never realized it until after what you told me happened at the Hephaestus festival- that awful fire... we understand each other, we always have, but then...I knew. Maybe your father wouldn't want us to be married, gods know that I know I'm likely not what he wants. My family are middle- class, despite my father's position. Then again, I seem to fit in with so few anyway that I'm used to disappointment. " She sighed sadly, reaching up to caress his cheek.
"But I also know this. Even if he might not approve of us being together, I think it's possible that Aphrodite and @ares and Hermes,,, might." That thought gave her comfort somehow.
"Tell me something, please. Would you fight for me- to protect me? Whether there was a war going on, or, closer to home, perhaps an intruder who might want to take me away? Would that be enough...for you?"
Perhaps he might always have a desire to prove himself a capable man, and an exceptional warrior. But what if he didn't need to be so far away- unless there was a war, of course- or seem to have an ambition to be an officer?
"I would not hold you back from your dreams. I know what it is to be kept from the things you want- maybe too well, sometimes. But would I be enough?"
She wanted to be enough for someone, gods willing. But if that someone were him, she'd almost feel as if she had somehow won a crown of laurels.... And then a tear did slip down her cheek despite herself. "I want.. .no,need... to be enough for someone." She was probably enough for Adelpha and Basil, too, but somehow she wanted Max as more than a friend.
'I really like your dress,' he said. 'I guess I wouldn't mind if you wore everyday for the rest of your life.'
She laughed softly in his ear, her eyes shining with true happiness for once.
"Then I will... unless I get dust on it- you know, from riding Apostolos." Wearing a dusty dress wasn't good fro her lung condition. But otherwise, she wouldn't mind in the least.

Maximus placed Celine in a bridal carry as he began to carry her out of his room . Celine was light compared to the things Maximus had to take with him during his training to be a soldier. It helped that Celine smelled a lot better than a rotting fruit or boulders. Still Celine's confession nearly caused Maximus to drop her but he still tightened his grip. "Y-you," Maximus stammered staring into her shimmering brown eyes. Celine wanted to cry she wanted to reach out to Maximus. "Love me?"
This had to be part of the roleplay right? Celine loving him? She was his friend, part of his family he never thought of Celine as nothing more than just a close family member. Well did he? Why did Celine have to make things confusing at times? The moment Celine caressed his cheek Maximus had to fight hard to resist a blush. Her touch was so soft and smooth and as he was carrying Celine down the stairs he couldn't resist how vulnerable she looked and felt. "Of course I fight to protect the ones I love," Maximus said. "Especially you Celine."
The young man closed his eyes wondering what that could mean but he focused on Celine. "I'll protect you," he said. "Always."

It was enough. She didn't quite know why, but for now, it was. Why would he be carrying her in his arms if he didn't feel the same?
"It must be true- somehow. I don't think you'd carry anyone in your arms you didn't want to love..."
Well, there was the possible exception of a wounded soldier in his unit, she amended in her thoughts. 'No man left behind,' after all.
But for now, for this moment, she had been honest with him, even if he perhaps didn't realize what it meant just yet, just like she hadn't until the fire he told her about.
Somehow, she felt the same about him, except that she could only pray he'd live through many more battles. But she could protect his heart.
"I love you... more than anything, and even if today is all we ever have."
It was enough. She was enough for him. And for the first time in a long while, she finally felt like enough. She was worth protecting for more than being Cassander of Acaris' daughter, more than for being only one of his friends. She curled into him and fit herself against him as though she'd never leave. Wiping her eyes, her cheek pressed against his chest, she felt she was home. And if nothing else, it seemed for a moment that the gods cared about her love, no matter what anybody who ever knew might have to say about it.
For now, though she ached, body and soul, to do so much more than snuggle against him caressing his cheek, she wouldn't. Maybe they would never make love. But it might be better that way. Their bond was already so deep that she knew losing him would devastate her regardless, and besides, he might not be ready if he was just realizing their love.
She was content to enjoy a pleasant warmth that seemed to feel her entire being. He had asked what if, and now they might both always remember, even if they never spoke of it again for the sake of both their hearts.

"Wait what?"
What did Celine say? That she loved Maximus? The young man nearly dropped Celine but otherwise kept her stable. Her scent filled his nostrils while he held the young woman close to his chest. "A-Are we roleplaying Celine?" Maximus stammered as he headed towards the marketplace. Celine was just a master at sending mixed messages. For years they have been friends, Celine would always give him elusive looks and would even try to touch him though she was afraid of being touched due to the fires her family endured when she was younger. Maximus helped Celine by being her friend but it seemed that Celine wanted to be more? How did he miss this? Or perhaps this was a dream of sorts.
"Your perfume," Maximus said while he carried Celine. "It's so.... intoxicating. Where do get these kinds of perfume Celine?" Maybe the perfume was what was messing with Maximus' mind. Yet the young man wasn't completely sure. "I like it though, I like you, I like your dress, I like your earrings, I like every thing about you Celine. I like the way you keep your hair down, I like the way that you dress just nice for me....."
He stared at Celine. "Did you dress for me?" he asked.
