Nic woke early that morning, as was his normal habit even on the nights that Dawn was able to steal away to share his bed. Smiling down at his beloved bride who lay facing away him, her thick brown curls spilling down the length of her pale creamy skin. Bending down, Nic pressed a soft kiss to her shoulder before straightening away from the bed and his wife. Moving quietly, he hurried to wash and dress, for he was a man on a mission today,
His work had been even hectic than normal of late the last several weeks and the young couple had only seen each other while they were doing their duties to the princess that they both served. Though Emilia was far from a demanding or harsh mistress. Nic suspected that the young princess knew of their secret relationship, not that they’d secretly wed of course but that they were in love and had been for sometime.
But this day he was was going to buy a gift for Emilia’s birthday, and he hoped to get something for Dawn as well, though unlike the princess neither he nor Dawn truly knew when their true birthday was, his mother had died before he had been old enough to have learned such a thing from her, assuming she’d been able to remember after the trauma she’d endured. As far as things went with Dawn, she’d been born a slave her mother died at her birth and no one had cared enough to mark the exact day.
Nic intended to get the princess a puppy, something that he could work with as it grew to help guard her when he couldn’t be there. There were no female guards who could accompany her to the baths, or in her rooms at night, so his solution was to get her a canine companion who could.
In the marketplace Nic looked over various merchant’s displays of their wares, looking for a gift for Dawn. The animals were on the far end his last stop, since he knew he wouldn’t want to do much browsing with a young pup in tow. He bought some sweets to share with Dawn before making his way to the animal pens.
He bought the dog for Emilia easily enough, but when he left he had a basket in his arms, one that held not one puppy, but two. There had been a litter weaned just last week, and a runt born within that the owner had been planning to drown. The tiny creature tugged at Nic’s heart, so he’d offered to take it instead, paying a pittance to save a life. I’ll give it to Dawn. He thought, hoping that it would live as long as it’s sibling. After dropping the runt off in his room, Nic carried Emilia's to her quarters.

Emilia was not someone who enjoyed rising early from bed - especially not when the night before had been a late one when the Feast of Sinners ended. Having finally retired to bed at an hour later than usual, on top of having had a long day of attending the arcus and the performance from the Children of Mnesmonye, Emilia groaned when the sun streamed in, and Helen opened the door loudly to finally wake the sleeping princess up.
"No." the young brunette groaned, but while her head lady's maid was someone who cared greatly for Emilia's wellbeing, she also knew when enough was enough.
So without much of a choice in the matter, Emilia was forced out of bed and unceremoniously dumped in a bath prepared for her, the water lukewarm at best to wake her up. An hour later, she emerged properly brushed and scrubbed, hair coiled in braids and left over her right shoulder, the remaining strands held up by various bejewelled pins in her head.
Her chiton was a simple one, for not much has been planned for the day. Her birthday would fall much the same time as the Senate meet, and the young princess faulted neither her sister nor father for having left the occasion by the wayside - Emilia too, did not feel much in a celebratory mood, being far too worried for the outcome of the Senate meet. So with a simple, restful day ahead after the jam-packed events of the Feast, Emilia had chosen a navy chiton with a golden belt, bare on her arms, the shade of which accentuating her bronzed complexion.
Eschewing with kohl or paint on her face, she slipped her feet into bare slippers, and then headed for the door. Just as her hands laid on the handle however, the door swung open. Emilia's eyes registered surprise when she saw Nicholai at her doorway, for she usually wandered the palace without a guard, and only necessitated their presence when she went out to the temples or the marketplace.
"Good morning Nicholai," the young princess murmured with a small smile, eyes flickering to the basket in curiosity. "Is there anything of matter, for you to come to my quarters so early?"

Nic smiled down at her fighting the urge to scoff when she called this early. He’d been awake for hours, having walked the length of the market and made multiple purchases. Then he’d gone back to his quarters, dropping the little puppy off at his quarters. He’d made arrangements to have his men take the puppy out several times that day so that there wouldn’t be any accidents before Dawn was done for the day. But, he reminded himself, Emilia was not one for the early morning hours, a fact that knew all too well.
He’d only come to bring her her birthing day gift, which was the contents of the basket he held in his arms. “Nothing’s wrong.” He hastened to reassure her. “I just brought you a gift for your birthing day is all.” He shifted the basket so he could hold it out for her to take. “I… I just really hope that you like it.” Nic stood by the door, his arms folded across his chest, watching her with a warm, hopeful smile on his handsome face. He was genuinely very fond of the younger of the two princesses, for she’d always been supportive of his relationship with Dawn. For that, Emilia would always have a place in his heart. Not as large a part as his wife held and would always hold, but a place nonetheless. And he really did hope that she would like the gift he had bought for her.

Her guardsman's smile was comforting - it always was. Next to her father and Persephone, Emilia trusted no one else more, and she had always been able to count on Nicholai to get her to safety, or if he wasn't around, ensure she was properly guarded. Having been attached to him since she was a child, it was a given that Emilia was comfortable around the foreign man who had served as her guard for the longest time.
Birthing day? Surprise registered in Emilia's honeyed orbs. With all the fuss that surrounded the Senate meet to happen the next day, Emilia had almost forgot her birthday would be coming up within a few weeks time, a week or two after the meeting actually. Usually, her father would arrange for a day out for her, along with gifts, and Persephone would likely spend the day with her - a rare gift, considering her sister was often busy with running the kingdom. For Nicholai to remind her started Emilia, but the surprise melted into a smile when he held out a basket to her.
A little confused frown furrowed her brows, as she took the basket from his hands, curious when it moved in her grip. A question was flashed towards the guard, but the words died on her lips when the cover to the basket was upended, and an adorable brown nose popped out, all damp and sniffly, before they were followed by a pair of melting chocolate irises. A puppy that looked like it had entirely too much skin around its jaws, the ears flopped on its face as the midnight black young creature popped out of the basket, a pair of large paws over the edge of the basket.
Emilia's heart immediately went out to the small thing, quickly picking the warm bundle of animal out to hold him to her chest, a delighted smile flashed at Nicholai."Oh, he's adorable, Nicholai! Is he for me?" the girl gushed, laughing when a lick or two was laved over her face by the excited puppy. Recognizing the breed as a Molossian famed for guarding its people, Emilia laughed as the tail of the small creature wagged wildly.
"Would he guard me as well as you then, Nicholai? Would that afford you more time spent elsewhere?" the words however, were clearly a tease to her friend and guard, as Emilia smiled to him as she spoke, before beckoning him in. Closing the door behind them, she placed the puppy on the floor of her chambers, laughing as the animal darted this way and that to explore the room, returning ever so often to Emilia to sniff his new owner again, before darting off again.
Watching the antics of her new pet, Emilia put on a thoughtful look, before glancing at Nicholai in curios question, "Shall I name him Labros, then? Since he shall be my fierce protector whenever you are off elsewhere."

Protecting Emilia was not merely Nic’s duty, but his privilege, and he would never hesitate to ensure her safety. Since he was a boy, he’d been fond of the little sprite as he’d nicknamed her so long ago, for her sunny nature, sweet disposition and generous heart. His lips curved as the thought that she had been the one to introduce him to his young wife all those years ago. For that Nic would always feel that he was in Emilia’s debt.
Nic grinned at the princess’ obvious delight about the gift he’d gotten for her birthing day. Life in the palace had been chaotic these last several months and he didn't want the anniversary of Emilia’s birth to pass by unnoticed. She was too important to him to allow such a travesty. He was absolutely tickled to have raised her spirits, since he had missed the musical sound of her laughter.
“Well… yes and no.” Nic drawled, leaning his shoulder against the doorframe to Emilia’s private quarters, his body blocking easy access to her rooms. “It did occur to me that he could guard you as I do. But I was thinking more of the times when my presence is not appropriate.” Hot color rose up slowly up Nic’s throat to his cheeks, brightening his face to near crimson. Nic turned his attention to the puppy he’d just given his princess, willing his face to cool, cursing his fair skin for showing is embarrassment so clearly.
“The pup is yours now princess.” Nic’s deep voice shook with suppressed laughter as he watched her fondly, “The choice of names is yours.” He reached out to rub a finger along the little animal’s silky fur. “But as he will not be small forever, I’ll just say he needs a name that will still suit when he is fully grown.”

It didn't really hit Emilia, really, that there was a time when Nicholai wouldn't be around her. At an age where she simply though of relationships as spending as much time with the other as possible, but not at all of what would happen behind closed doors or on a marital bed, Emilia simply gave Nicholai a perplexed look, but was promptly distracted again when the black Molossian tumbled into her lap, which made the princess laugh as she picked the wriggling cub and placed him right side up.
"Labros it is then." she murmured, grinning at Nicholai. "I think it suits when he fully grows." The small cub tumbled, right into the heels of Helen, the head of her lady's maid who obviously had her nose scrunched up. Old and a stickler for rules as it were, Emilia would not be surprised if she had no love for the princess's new pet. But Helen was far too proper to say a word, but instead cleared a throat, and asked if Emilia would prefer to break her fast in her room instead.
Not wanting to cause more distress to her sister and father by wishing an untrained, gambolling puppy sure to cause issues and trouble in a royal dining room, the brunette gratefully took up the maid's suggestion, watching as the elderly lady exited the room, before her eyes turned to Nicholai. "Would you mind helping Labros learn his manners, Nicholai?" Emilia turned thoughtful, her gaze falling on the puppy sniffing about the wardrobe, and then lifting his leg, a natural occurence Emilia groaned at, but did not move to stop. The slaves would clean it later.
"I do not wish to cause more distress to sissy, but if Labros is to be around me, I should think he'll need to learn where he can go to do his toilette." It was a sheepish smile that graced her lips as she more or less pleaded with Nicholai. Having no pets herself before, Emilia was quite at a loss with how to deal with a new, untrained puppy. But at the very least, he'll serve as a great distraction for her while she was waiting for Persephone and her father to return from the Senate meet in a few days.

Nic hadn’t really been thinking of the young princess he guarded marrying, but of the times when the presence of a male guard wouldn't be welcome, like say, when she was bathing, since he and his men did her while she sleep during the night.
“I planned to work with Labros, as will your guards Princess.” Nic said with a slow smile, moving out of the elderly woman’s way, holding the door for her one eye on the puppy to ensure the little one did not escape when Helen left to fetch the princess’ breakfast. Seeing the pup sniffing at the wardrobe, then beginning to lift a leg. Nic straightened, clapping his hands together sharply, and moved quick. Scooping him up, he rushed through Emilia’s rooms to her balcony. There he set Labros down, allowing the animal to relieve himself out here rather than in the princess’ rooms. “You will also need to work with him princess. Especially when he’s young. He’ll need your love and attention if you want him to be loyal to you.”
When the young pup finished relieving himself, gamboling over to attack the laces of the soft leather boots Nic wore, the big man smiled tenderly down at him, shuffling his feet enough so that the puppy could play chasing the laces. “It just takes kindness, patience and love.” He told her, “The men and I will help you with him. But you will have to be a part of his training, if he’s to truly be yours Princess.”

Hearing her guard's assurances that Nicholai @nicholai , himself would work with the young, untrained pup, the princess gave a glad smile at the foreign male she called her most trusted guard. Nicholai left little to chance, and that was perhaps why as long as he was with her, Persephone had little to worry in regards to her youngest and only sibling. Nicholai was likely the only reason Persephone had allowed Emilia to travel to Taengea for the Dionysus festival - albeit that had now backfired. Emilia now wondered if Persephone would let her go beyond the borders of the capital now.
Watching with a wide-eyed gaze as the male more or less swooped in to grab the puppy before anything was released, Emilia was quick to hurry after Nicholai as he headed to the balcony which overlooked the cliffs of the capital. It was a secure area to have a balcony, the type of room similar to Persephone in, where while it was an open way to get in to the princess, the drop was sheer and deadly, and anyone would be a fool to use the window as an entrance.
She giggled, watching the black puppy relieve himself, before the guard's words redirected her attention. Her hazel eyes turned to Nicholai, a serious glimmer in them as she nodded. "I think I sort of love him already. He's absolutely adorable, Nicholai." she murmured, laughing as Labros ran back to attack Nicholai's laces, and then headed out to the balcony, whimpering a little when the loud crash of the waves against the cliffs disturbed him.
Leaning over, Emilia scooped him up, laughing as his little tongue busied itself licking at her chin. "I'll be glad to. It'll give me something to do other then just temple visits, with how sissy has been keeping me in the palace, Nicholai. Just tell me where to be, whenever."

Nicholai smiled back down at the princess he guarded since she was a little bitty thing, though given his size she was still next to him. He’d been hers since the day he’d found her crying under that bush in the garden just after the death of her mother, the queen of Athenia. It’d been many years since the loss but Nic still missed the gentle presence of the queen. But what Nic didn't know was just how little time remained before the princesses lost their sole remaining parent and he his paton.
The defensiveness of the balcony off the princess’ quarter was the reason he hadn’t objected when he’d become a member of princess Emilia’s bodyguards, then the head of the guardsmen assigned to her protective detail. The sheer drop was an impossible climb, even more than the one off of Princess Persephone’s private chambers. But even so, he kept men as close to her door as he could. There were times when it wasn’t proper to have them inside with, and there were many days when Nicholai wished that there were female guards. He’d even settle for teaching a defensive move or two to the noble ladies who served both of the princesses. Though not Dawn, he thought, a wry smile tugging at his lips, since she’d more likely hurt herself.
“Good.” Nicholai with a broad grin for her, since he’d really hoped that she would like the gift he’d bought for her. True, he had hopes that the dog would help keep her safe during the times when he and his men couldn’t be at her side for whatever reason. Nic crouched down when the puppy whimpered, holding out his hand to the little animal. “It’s okay little one.” He crooned, “I know it’s all new and kind of scary, but you’ll get used to it here. And princess Emilia will take good care of you.” He turned his head looking back over his shoulder to where said princess still stood.
“I think it’ll be best if he spends his nights with you in your quarters, princess.” Nic said, as she held the puppy in her arms, his small, pink, wet tongue lapping at her chin. He smiled when she laughed. He’d missed the sound of her laughter since the events at the arena in Taengea. "I'll come for you both in the morning." His lips twitched, "But not too early."

The puppy was a delight, at least to the young princess. What she didn't know was how, in the days to come, Labros would prove to be much more then simply an entertainment to Emilia's eyes. But for now, the brunette was happy to have the wriggling ball of fur in her hands, happily lavishing his young, infantile love on who he sees to be his newest mistress, as Emilia listened to Nicholai. She nodded eagerly when the guard stated the puppy will stay with her - she wouldn't mind at all. Of course, Persephone would likely have a word or two to say when she introduced the black puppy to her sister, but Emilia wasn't too worried. The Palati was huge, and it was unlikely that Labros would cause too much trouble with her sister anyhow.
Laughing as Nicholai stated that he would come from her, the gratefulness she felt when he continued that he wouldn't be too late, was clear. Emilia was no early riser in bed, and she had had way too many of those over the last two months, that has made her missed laying in her comfortable bed for much of the morning, before her stomach necessitated her to wake up in search of sustenance.
Nodding, Emilia placed the puppy down again, and allowed the young canine to run and explore the remainder of her quarters, as she instructed the maids to bring her morning meal up. Knowing her sister, she was likely busy either in discussion with her Advisors or with their father, with the Senate meet looming, and Emilia wasn't someone keen on the idea of sitting at the large dining hall alone. With Labros yapping around her ankles, having her breakfast in her rooms sounded much better. "Oh, and have Cook prepare a small platter of cold meats." she said at the last minute, grinning as she peered down at the puppy again. At least he would enjoy that.
