Achilleas didn’t know what he was doing. Even as his feet had stopped in his tracks and the words had left his mouth, there was a part of him that was cringing at the self-sabotage. But, glancing around at their surroundings, so arranged it didn’t seem right, especially with the slight shyness he had seen in the girl beside him. What if she was unsure? What if she came to regret it? If she did, and he had just gone along with it to sate his own desires, would she think badly of him then?
He was silently considering all the ways this could wrong even as she asked if he did not think it romantic. “It is” he agreed, and then realised that he wasn’t making his position any clearer. He frowned at the thread of doubt in her voice, doubt that he’d put there
Watching as her expression shifted and she crossed her arms across her chest he almost blurted out “It is” again because he wanted to assure her that he very much did want and that maybe that was part of the problem. Achilleas swallowed.
“That’s not what I said” he clarified, without actually saying that he wanted her more than he probably should. Instead of revealing such a thing, he deflected the conversation back towards Theodora. “I’m just not certain its what you want. If you haven’t… that is to say, if you don’t know what you are doing wouldn’t you rather it be something with more prior consideration than...bumping into someone outside a temple?”
Injecting just enough weight into his voice to convey his superior wisdom in such matters, it was almost undermined as Achilleas realised with a jolt that perhaps it was him that wanted the reassurance it was more than just that, and that was discomfiting. He didn’t want to be just the most convenient person for Theodora to throw herself at. Even though he did.
This had been a stupid idea. What had he been thinking?
“Theodora” he began, reaching a hand out towards her as if to soothe her. “ Let’s just admit that this was perhaps an ill-thought-out plan and I can escort you for the evening with no further expectations other than your company.” He raised his brows at her expectantly, because it was a generous offer on his part. And if it made him feel a lot better to think that she wouldn’t just be deciding to go worship with the next man that walked past well..that was not his motivation. He was being a gentleman.

The displeased expression on Theodora’s face did not shift as Achilleas spoke; his brief defense of ‘it is’ did not do anything to help his case. If anything, her expression only grew more displeased as he turned the tide back on her, taking a frustrated step back and away from him. “Are you presuming to tell me what I want, Lord Achilleas?” Dark eyes flashed in anger as she stared at him in blatant disbelief at his nerve, her temper rising to hide the hurt and confusion she felt. Why had he sudden reeled back? Was it her? Had she done or said something she shouldn’t have?
No! This was his doing! And now here he was, acting as if he had some wealth of knowledge that he could lord over her, and she wasn’t having it! “I do believe I can speak for myself and my own desires, thank you,” she went on in a cold and clipped tone. “Do you really think so little of me that I would have simply taken the first arm that was offered? If I hadn’t wanted to accompany you, I wouldn’t have! I’m not some little girl to be coddled, you know!” Who did he think he was?! How was it that he knew how to get under her skin so thoroughly? I’m just not certain it’s what you want… Ha! How in Tartarus did he expect to know what she wanted?!
“Gods, why did you even come here tonight if this was…” Huffing out an annoyed sigh, Theo shook her head and cut herself off before she continued railing at him. Even if he had spoiled the moment, the night was still young, and she had come to enjoy this festival, not to listen to someone mutter about contrived situations and be berated for apparently not knowing what her own mind wanted.
When he held his hand out to her, she made a show of tightening her arms around her chest and taking another step back. “I don’t think I’ll be requiring your escort any longer tonight, Lord Achilleas,” she said stiffly. “But thank you for your offer. I think I’ll go do something I want to do, or are you going to say that’s wrong, too?”
There was a furious flush in her cheeks as she stared him down for a moment before she shook her head and turned away. “Enjoy your evening, my lord. Go stare at the statues or analyze the flowers, or whatever it is that you think is more appropriate for this sort of event.”
Theodora didn’t wait to hear what else he might have to say before she was walking off in a huff, a flash of gold all that could be seen of her as she stomped off into the darkness. “‘Oh, Theo, you look so beautiful tonight, like a nymph of Aphrodite,’” she muttered in a mockingly deep approximation of the lord’s voice. “‘Let me escort you, and then tell you that you shouldn’t want the things you want because that’s such a courtly thing of me to do.’” Rolling her eyes and shaking her head, she continued along the dimly lit path, her irritation clear in her gait. “Maybe I really shouldn’t have come.”
Stepping off the path and into an adjacent grove of olive trees, she flopped down into one of the artfully arranged blanket nests and sighed, rolling over onto her back and gazing up at the stars. Well, at least this view was nice, even if her mood had significantly soured. Folding her arms behind her head, she watched the passage of a shooting star, corner of her mouth tugging up in a smile. Part of her thought maybe she ought to call it a night and head back home, but this far away from the rest of the festival, it was quiet and peaceful, the sparkling sky overhead beautiful and soothing. Even if she didn’t find herself wrapped in the arms of a lover by night’s end, at least she might snatch a few hours of peace…

The smile on his lips gave her hope, and as he bid his farewells to his cousins her own smile broadened, reaching out to take his hand as he approached. This was what she had come for, to steal another night with Stephanos while ensuring that she was the one that remained on his mind. All of her flirtations and attentions could be nothing if he met the wrong person tonight to drive her from his mind. And there was no chance in Hades or Aphrodite's sight she would allow that to happen.
Her feelings for the second prince had been lingering for some time, but it was only in the recent years as she grew older and bolder that she was able to act on it, spending as much time with him as was possible. And tonight it was all for them, no sneaking around or hiding, no having to pretend that they hadn't intimately enjoyed one another's company already. Perhaps if she could convince him to give into feelings she would walk away with his heart. The thought of marrying Stephanos was every dream she'd had come true. A prince could give her a life of comfort, raise her status, and give her the chance to shine without having to take on the duties of queen like Selene had been raised for. Some people were born to be queens, others to be princesses.
With his arm wrapped around her she leaned happily into his side, her hand snaking along the front of his chest to feel the hard muscle beneath until he shifted, before her now in all of his glory. Biting her lip to hide a smile wider than she wanted to reveal to him now, Pia took his hands as he walked backwards, allowing him to pull her deeper into the meadows. If he had suggested they fall to the ground now she would, if they made it to a kline it was only a bonus.
"I was hoping to find you here. Thinking how lucky it would be to have a night of freedom, no sneaking, no lying to nosy mothers or sisters." Her brow quirked at the last and she pulled herself close to him, hands sliding from his shoulders down his chest before twining in the belt above his hips. "I thought perhaps, we could spend some time wandering, or talking." Standing close enough to speak lowly into his ear she wondered if the goddess had given her this extra boldness. "Or you could make me scream your name."

Down Near The River
The full moon of the night didn’t hide much to Evangelina’s disgust, it was too warm to be cloaked and the shadows were too few for her to relax. Near the mouth of the river, Evangelina found a nice tree to drape the reins of her grey stallion over. A blanket and basket were set up and had obviously been abandoned already for more amorous activities, if the way the blanket was slightly rumpled said anything about the previous user. With a sigh, she flopped down onto the blanket not bothering to straighten it. She’d had everything planned for tonight. It was going to be the night she got a bit of revenge against Lord Nikos. Dangle herself in front of him and then pull herself out of his grasp and make him rue the day he decided she simply wasn’t enough to keep his interest. That’d been the brilliant plan she’d come up with, and what better time to execute it than under the guise of Aphrodite’s illustrious little festival. After all, Aphrodite had been the one who’d thrown her together with him in the first place.
Sitting on her knees, she knelled forward to rummage through the basket. Wine. Cheese. Crackers. Fruits. And… She lifted something up a little to get a better look. Oysters. Of course they’d packed some oysters… her eyes unintentionally gave a little roll and she sat them aside and reached for a cracker and some cheese to nibble on as her mind drifted. For the majority of her life, she’d felt like an outcast looking in on the lives of the women around her. They were beautiful, graceful, and she was certain they were comfortable in their own skin. She could build connections with horses but people were something infinitely more difficult. Their motives weren’t clear. Despite the fact that she struggled with people, it didn’t stop her from wanting… no, aching for something deeper. Swallowing the last of her cracker, she reached for the glass and poured a glass of wine.
The sounds of the river flowing mixed with the occasional sound of her horse snorting or plucking a twig from the branches. She took a sip of the wine and felt the liquid courage warming her from inside out which was not great considering the diaphanous midnight blue fabric was already clinging to her like a second skin. One sip turned into three, which turned into a glass, and before long had turned into two glasses. Before she knew it, she was laid out on the blanket, with her arms behind her head as she stared up at the moon and the stars.
Who was she kidding, this was better than looking for love or lust or whatever everyone was looking for? She had everything she needed right here. She didn’t need to prove anything to Lord Nikos, she didn’t need to prove anything to anyone. A giggle escaped, maybe there had been a bit more than wine in that bottle. Closing her eyes, she decided for tonight she didn’t care. It was nice not caring about anything. The pint-sized Leventi snuggled into the blanket a bit more. Reaching up she’d meant only to pull the fabric she wore away from her skin for a small reprieve but the way her touch grazed across her skin drew a small awareness from her.
Turning her head, she glanced at the various shadows of the darkness around her. Was there anyone else out there? For a moment, only the sounds of the river could be heard. Did she risk it? A thrill shot through her, maybe it was the wine… maybe it was whatever was in the wine… maybe she just wanted to live a bit on the edge tonight. She stood up and walked towards the river slipping out of her sandals as she went. She hadn’t chickened out of making Lord Nikos regret his decision… she’d simply realized it no longer mattered. “It’s his loss,” She muttered to herself as she took the first step into the shallow edge of the river. Taking another step, she reached down and pulled the hem of her chiton up to her thighs as she waded a little deeper.
The water was everything she’d known it would be on a night as warm as tonight was. Tilting her head up to the moonlight, she closed her eyes. Aphrodite, thank you for tonight. Her lips slowly spread in a smile as her toes dug into the wet riverbed. The more accustomed she grew to the water, the more lax she became about her chiton, before she finally just dropped it not worrying if it became wet anymore. She playfully kicked the water and laughed, she wasn’t missing any fun by not meeting a lover tonight. Tonight, she was going to be a water nymph and maybe have some more wine and let herself go under the full moon. Or that was her plan anyway...

It never ceased to amaze Arete how brilliantly stupid men could be. She wasn’t foolish enough to say as much out loud, it seemed to be that this was a trait that the whole of the opposite sex shared; including her precious Niky. Although Nikos would like to think that he had not been overtly direct in expressing his desire to see Arete at the festival, he had not been very subtle either. Discussions about the province of Malania and offhand comments about how to summon a carriage driver had made it more than clear that this festival was not something that he wanted Arete to miss. Who was she to deny her love what he wanted? As soon as the young woman had put the pieces together, she hide her own intentions behind a coy smile. Nikos only needed to mention the festival once. From that moment onwards, Retta’s thoughts never strayed far from how she was going to make this a night that Niky never forgot.
In an odd sort of way, Arete was excited about the festival. Even though there was a large shroud of secrecy covering the event -- something that Nikos was sure to stress in his attempts to convince her to come without saying that he wanted her to-- rumors about this grand event tended to circulate throughout Taengea afterward. It was a fun topic for those of Arete’s rank after all the fun had ended. The gods only knew how many supposed couplings had happened here in Maiania under the gaze of the goddess… Now Arete would get her turn to join in the fun instead of staying cooped up in Doralis stewing in her own jealously.
Given that this was something that the young woman had always wanted to do, Arete had spared no expense in preparing for this event. (That was something that she could do now that Nikos had seen to it that Arete would want for nothing while she held her coveted spot as his mistress.) With the few coins she had hidden away from both her family and her lover, Arete had an easy time of arranging for a new outfit and jewelry to adorn her already god-given beauty for this event. Honestly, she had thought it would be more difficult to procure these items, but given that both parties she was attempting to hide these preparations from were accustomed to her disappearing for large swaths of time, it had been shockingly easy. The only difficult part had been finding someone who was capable of doing her hair that would be adequate enough to lure in the famed womanizer that Nikos was, but that too was quickly solved by asking around in the market square and finding a rather rich merchant family who was willing to spare a talented slave for a few hours in exchange for a good amount of coin.
That was how this poor potter’s daughter from Doralis was able to arrive in Maliana in a sort of finery that would have otherwise never been accessible to her. As she stepped out of the carriage that her lover had arranged for her, Arete looked every bit the noblewoman she longed to be. Between her blush pink peplos made in a sheer fabric that almost gave a pleasant view of what lay underneath and the smattering of silver jewelry, it was clear that she had access to a fair bit of wealth. However, if the gathering crowd of royals saw her, no one would be able to place her as the young woman had stepped foot in the Taengean court. If any potential lover, man or woman, was in search of fantasy and anonymity, Arete would be the perfect candidate for such. They could honor the goddess and then leave, never to cross paths with this girl that was living out her dream since late childhood again.
However, little would they know that even though this young woman would not speak of any trysts tonight, their couplings would not be completely secret. After all, Nikos had talked quite a bit about this event. Even though he never directly mentioned as much, the young man had made it clear that his perfect idea of fun did not involve the two love birds reuniting from the start. Tonight was all about finding love in the most unexpected places, was it not? Arete was not going to fool herself. She would end up in Nikos’s arms before the night was through but until then… why not have a little fun?
Knowing full well that there would likely be a certain pair of eyes searching for her, Arete had no qualms about putting on a show for her lover. After all, wasn’t that what her dearest, darling Niky wanted? Never wanting to be a disappointment to her lover, Arete didn’t hold any reservations about making her way through the crowd and into the arms of an eager stranger -- a handsome boy she did not know who was about her age. After a brief moment of conversation that was really just tedious and unnecessary, Arete found her arms around his waist, pulling him close and kissing him with a certain amount of passion that was only reserved for Nikos. As eager as he might be to see Arete enjoying herself, she had no way to know if her lover would enjoy seeing that.
Oh well, if he didn’t find her… what he didn’t know couldn’t hurt him, right?

This was going wrong, and going wrong quickly. Achilleas could see it the way his words landed badly, saw how Theodora bristled and put another step between them. Marvellous.
‘Are you presuming to tell me what I want, Lord Achilleas’ Yes this was going badly. Wanting to backtrack but not sure how he could recover things Achilleas frowned a little at Theodora’s tone because really there was no need to be so combatant about it ‘I do believe I can speak for myself and my own desires thank you’
He shook his head “ No, I didn’t mean to suggest that.." But the Leventi lady had not said her piece and he was forced to listen as she gave him the reassurance he’d been wanting but only in the same breath as letting him know he’d messed it all up thoroughly.
“ I don’t think lowly of you at all” he protested, frustrated now himself that she was reading him so wrong. He’d only been trying to avoid any mistakes, anything that would sour things between them but it seemed as if that had happened anyway, despite his good intentions.“ And I’m sorry if looking out for your well-being is so abhorrent to you. Forgive me.” The latter was added on crisply because he felt unfairly judged.
He was irritated at himself then for getting riled, and for his clumsiness in steering then into...whatever in Hades this was. Why was she so angry? Attempting to smooth things over, his offer to accompany her further was thrown back in his face and when she refused him and moved back again, Achilleas let his hand fall back to his side, setting his jaw as he proceeded the sting of that rejection. Well, that was that then, was it? Waiting a moment to still any words made sharp by his own temper, he tried again after a pause “I apologise if I’ve caused you some offence, Lady Theodora”
But the anger in her gaze was unrelenting, and the words that fell from her lips scathing enough that he did not try to stop the young woman as she turned on her heel and stomped away, leaving him alone in the gardens of the Goddess of Love, rather snorted dismissively to hide how her disdain needled him.Analyse flowers? What?
Achilleas stared after her for a few moments before he huffed a breath and glanced around, hoping no one had borne witness to that. He was replaying the conversation in his head, torn between feeling down-hearted and annoyed. Gods how he wished for Stephanos’ smoothness sometimes. His cousin and his brother would both have something to say about the hash he’d made of that, he was certain.
Another sigh and the Mikaelidas Lord, not one for drink, had lifted his cup to his lips and drained it. He felt he needed to bolstering after that. And he didn't want to stand here alone in the temple gardens like a fool, but he could hardly risk running into Theodora again so instead turned and wandered in the opposite direction, without much aim in mind other than placing some distance between himself and that..disaster.

Emilios looked forward to nights like this, where inhibitions were down and women allowed themselves to just enjoy the feelings without any sort of regrets in the morning. If the goddess herself supported something like this, then why should any of them feel as if they shouldn’t enjoy themselves? It was always refreshing to watch the walls crumble around a woman, to watch her just… allow herself to fall into something new.
By the time he finished his first glass of wine, he had wandered down to the olive groves. He believed that the goddess would put things in his path, would decide just who he was supposed to spend the evening with. And while he was experienced, that didn’t mean he wasn’t a bit of a romantic. Privacy was something he treasured, not wishing to parade his exploits. Stephanos was the more boisterous of the pair, the one who bragged, who didn’t care about who knew. And while it was known that Emilios was just as active as his cousin, he tried to be a bit more discreet. If the woman wished to let his identity be known, that was something they could choose.
He always left that up to them.
A long table was set on the edge of the grove, and he used it as a chance to gather a small platter of food. He knew there were small areas set up within-- perhaps he could find someone to share the evening with. And while goblets would have been far more dignified, he picked up a bladder of wine, as it was easier to carry.
And with that, he stepped into the groves, whistling as he moved into the trees. As he got deeper in, couples dotted the landscape. And then, as if drawn in by the moon inself, he found Theodora of Leventi, staring up at the moon. He smiled softly, his tune taking a more playful beat. Stopped at the edge of the blanket, Emilios allowed his eyebrow to raise as he stared down at her. “I had heard that you could follow a shooting star to find a nymph underneath it. Instead of a nymph, I find a goddess. I cannot begin to calculate my good fortune in the matter, my lady.”
He bowed his head in greeting, the corner of his lip turned upward. “I do not come empty handed either, Lady Theodora. Perhaps you’ll allow me to join you? A lady sent from the heavens among us mere mortals should not be alone on a night like tonight.” His voice turned a bit playful, “Perhaps I may give you a taste of what it would be like to live among men for a night.”

A faint whistle nearby drew Theodora’s attention, sitting up enough in her little nest to see who might be making the sound. It was a jaunty tune, and it was only getting louder as she made out the distinct sound of footsteps heading in her direction. The shock on her face was almost laughable when she saw who it was, the moonlight limning the man as he stopped at the edge of her blanket and looked down on her with a smile. Emilios of Mikaelidas. The brother of the man whom she began her evening with. She could only imagine how the gods must be laughing to place Lord Emilios in her path now, after what had just happened with Achilleas. Theo always heard tales of Aphrodite’s sense of caprice, and nothing could have confirmed those stories for her more than this.
She couldn’t stop the blush from warming her cheeks as the man lavished his praises on her, a soft smiling curling her lips as she dropped her gaze to her lap. Achilleas had compared her to a nymph when he first saw her tonight, and now his brother rejected such a notion and exalted her to goddess. A quiet laugh parted her lips, looking back up at Emilios with a twinkle in her eye of secret amusement. “I’m hardly a goddess, my lord,” she demurred, even as she couldn’t quite keep the smile from her face, nor the warmth from her belly. Biting her lip and looking down as her lashes fluttered against her freckled cheeks, she added, “But far be it for me to stop you from saying so.”
When he asked if he could join her, there was a moment’s hesitation as Theo looked back up to meet his azure gaze. She knew Emilios had a certain… reputation, and perhaps it was not wise for her to accept his offer. While they had met at this Court event and that, she knew she ought to keep her distance; she was a Leventi, and she had a certain standard she must be held to. But… tonight was a night free of consequences, wasn’t it? Wasn’t the point that it didn’t matter who you were? Tomorrow was a new day, and both of them could simply leave it behind if they wished. What harm would it do if he sat with her for a while? It didn’t necessarily mean anything had to happen. But if it did…
Gods, but he looked so handsome, the silvery light of the moon illuminating him like a hero straight from a bard’s tale. She would be downright stupid to say no.
Sitting up fully, she made her decision and moved to make room for him to join her, shyly patting the blanket beside her. “Tell me, my lord,” she said as he settled next to her, looking up to meet his eyes before dropping her own again. She was thankful for the darkness concealing the flush that refused to fade from her cheeks. “How might a goddess spend her first night among mortals?” She decided it was easier to play along than to behave as if this was just a normal night; gods knew she had very little experience with this sort of thing. “Particularly one who doesn’t come down from Olympus very often.” Theo smiled in spite of herself as she glanced at his face again, her stomach fluttering with a heady mixture of nerves and excitement.

His plan to get her attention worked, but it wasn’t like he didn’t expect it to. Emilios knew of his reputation, having long ago perfected his once awkward flirtations into boyish yet seductive moments. He was never pushing, never forced himself onto a woman. But he was charming, or at least he had been told that. Long past his awkward phase, he knew what to say, how to say it. And he knew when not to.
But she appeared to at least be willing to hear what he was saying.
There had been little chance of them spending time alone on any other night. She was Theodora of Leventi, one of the most eligible women in the kingdom. And while he was he did have a title, it was one that came with no land or real prospects. There were far too many people in between him and the throne for him to even be considered a potential suitor for her. But tonight, titles didn’t matter. Tonight, there was little that could keep interested parties apart.
After tonight, it could just be something they forgot about.
As she sat up, his smile widened as space was made for him to join her. He took a moment, really taking in the view of her, seated among pillows and blankets as if straight from the heavens. If she was in white, he might have called her the moon goddess Selene. But the amber, draped against her ivory skin, gave her the appearance of the goddess of passion and love herself. And perhaps she was-- perhaps she was one of Aphrodite’s preferred human vessels. His eyes were dancing as he settled down next to her, setting both the plate of food and the bladder of wine down in front of her as offerings.
He positioned his body towards her, legs crossed in front him, hips rolled in towards her, weight favoring the arm closest to her. He left little space, fully intending to consume her time for as much as she would allow. Emilios wanted to be close, wanted her to forget about anyone else and focus on him. “Well,” he started, uncorking and handing her the bladder of wine, “food and drink are usually the easiest place to start. I am sure Olympus has far better than what we have to offer, but on a night like tonight, the best that is available is usually set out. I’ve heard the Leventi keep fantastic cellars, and may have provided some of the libations tonight.” This was an easy game to play, for it rang true for him.
She was a goddess, someone who he could never be good enough for. His reputation, his birth order-- nothing about him was truly good enough to be given a second glance. She would marry well, would find a high match and be a baroness, most likely. There was no reason for her to even waste her time with him, and yet, tonight it was as if time stood still. Expectations and reputations weren’t supposed to matter, right? “There is a river close by, but I am sure you know that, as you look down upon Greece frequently. Some would find the waters refreshing, albeit a bit cold on a night like tonight. I am of the opinion that if a goddess was to find herself in the company of a humble servant, she should allow herself to be served, to be worshipped.”
He was a bold one, shifting his weight to reach out and brush a curl behind her ear, finger trailing the curve of her face as he slowly pulled back.
“Perhaps it is not you who should be asking what I would recommend a goddess should do.” His voice was low, eyes focused in on her and only her. “I would think that a goddess should be allowed to do as she wishes, if tonight is her only night among us. I am sure you have found yourself curious.” He didn’t presume to say what she may have been curious about. “I am your humble servant, my lady. I have no other desire to be here by your side, for as long as you’ll let me.”

His proximity was… distracting, to put it mildly. Could he hear the way her heart sped in her chest? The way her breath hitched when he gazed at her so intently? Unlike her previous encounter of the evening, Emilios was bold and direct; there was little doubt as to why he chose to accompany her. How far he would go, or rather, how far she would let him go, she was not yet sure, but he was not hesitant in his admiration. Somehow, when he looked at her that way, and spoke in that tone, she doubted he would suddenly change his mind or lose his nerve—unlike some people.
Emilios reached out to uncork the wine and handed it to her, Theo taking it without thinking. Pressing it to her lips, she took a swallow before handing it back to him with a smile. “Nearly as good as what’s on the mountain,” she teased before eyeing the plate of food he had placed in front of her, as well. She wasn’t sure if she could manage to eat or not; the fluttering in her stomach left room for little else. Selecting only a strawberry, she took a bite and let the tart sweetness numb her tongue, grounding herself with the familiar flavor.
She supposed it was normal to be so nervous when one had so little experience with this sort of thing, but she didn’t want Emilios to think of her as just some swooning maiden either. What was she supposed to do? Should she simply lean in and kiss him, let things fall where they may? Or did she draw out this teasing flirtation until neither of them could take it any more? What if he got bored? What if she did everything wrong? What if…
His hand smoothed a lock of hair from her face, his touch lingering against her cheek, and her thoughts scattered to the wind.
I would think that a goddess should be allowed to do as she wishes, if tonight is her only night among us.
The parallels between this encounter and the one before it were hard to ignore. Where one brother had presumed to tell her what she ought to want, the other told her to follow her wishes in a voice like velvet, one that had her leaning in closer as if she couldn’t help herself. It was like her own hand was possessed by a force outside of herself, taking hold of his before it fell back to his side. Twining their fingers, she scooted in the couple inches that parted them, a gentle warmth spreading through her from where her knee and shoulder brushed his.
“What if the goddess wanted her servant to stay with her until morning?” she murmured, her voice set in the same low tone as his. “To show her the… things she might be curious about.” Biting her lip, Theo’s gaze lingered on his mouth for a moment before flicking up to his eyes. “Would he stay?”

She was absolutely right to be concerned about keeping the prince’s attention. Stephanos was notoriously fickle about his trysts, loving each woman intensely for up to a fortnight but then deciding after a little while that they were boring and moving on to the next woman that he deemed to be more exciting. Sometimes his affairs could go on for a long time, if the woman was clever. Olympia of Leventi, it would turn out, was one of the more clever ones and Stephanos could not know, when she slipped her hand into his, that fate had a more lasting ending for them in mind.
Moonlight turned the petals of the flowers silver and the grass points white so that the sea of dark grasses glistened and shone as they moved through it, leaving a swaying glitter in their wake. His attention wasn’t on the beauty surrounding them. It wasn’t on the diamond net of stars above or the heady perfumes on the cool breeze. His gaze remained on her eyes, the way she bit her lip and still smiled at him, the warmth of her touch. It was the newness of love that Stephanos was addicted to and thus far, Olympia was succeeding in her goal to keep his head turned towards her. However, if Stephanos knew of her plans for matrimony, he’d have let her down gently. He thought himself destined for a princess.
Every word out of her mouth had him grinning ever more brilliantly and when she finally pressed her body close to his, he leaned down to catch her in a kiss, his own words spoken against her lips. “I like lying to your mother,” he teased. “And especially your sisters.” As though he and Selene or Theodora ever had long conversations. Mostly it was a head nod from him and a curtsey from them and that was about all, save for the very rare misadventure. Olympia was the Leventi girl he knew most and was contented enough to keep it that way.
“We can wander,” he said, hands sliding up to cup her face as he walked slowly backwards, bestowing a kiss between each word all the while. “And talk,” he added. And then, “And you’ll most definitely scream.” As though to emphasize that point, someone else did scream out the name Patros which he found pretty funny and laughed a little, letting Pia go for the moment.
“So,” he stepped back to arm’s length, only keeping hold of her hand by her fingertips. “What did you wish to discuss?” They were near enough to the kline now that if he spun her around she’d be sitting on it.

Eleni nearly hadn’t come. The secret festival in celebration of Aphrodite was exactly the sort of celebration she loved. A night of secret liaisons, full of intrigue and pleasure. It was everything that she sought out in life, and yet this year, she had made no plans to attend. She was only here at all because of Olympia. Her dear friend had needed a confidant. Someone to accompany her without judgment or resistance. It was the least she could do truly. The woman had been beyond kind to her, one of her closest friends.
So she could attend an event she was now suddenly dreading. And it was all because of one man.
Silanos. He had been in Taengea for a year now, and since that very first day, he had gotten more and more under her skin. She was far more addicted to him than the wine, or the opium. He had been a breath of fresh air in her life. They always kept things light and fun, yet... there was an undercurrent between them. It had never been spoken, but Eleni could feel it. Sil getting too attached to her. Wanting more than casual.
And sometimes, she almost wanted it too.
That was the part that scared her most. She hadn’t allowed herself to care about anyone ever since... him. No one had ever gotten through the hard armor that protected her heart. Yet Sil came close time and time again. Pieces of him slipped through chinks she didn’t even realize existed. And she wanted to cling to those.
But deep down, she was a mess. A broken, shattered mess of a person. If he ever caught a glimpse of that Eleni... he wouldn’t want to look at her again. And even if he did keep her close, it would only be out of pity. And regret would soon be the only thing he saw when he looked at her. He deserved so much more than she could ever offer.
So she pushed him away. Time and again, she would do something small. Flirt with another guy, kiss someone else. Let him think she left with someone else. She always returned home alone those nights. She couldn’t truly be with another, but she couldn’t let him believe she could ever be more to him. It was too cruel.
Truth be told, she should have cut him loose a long time ago. It would have been kinder to them both.
Instead, she called him back to her, time and time again. Pretending as though she had never pushed him away in the first place, she’d fall into his arms, tumble into his bed. She couldn’t stay away no matter how much she knew she should. He spoke to a part of her that had been buried for so long. She didn’t dare let those walls crumble - the moment she did she would fall apart entirely. Yet with him, there was a trace of what might have been. A momentary glimpse of a future that might have been in her reach.
She knew that Sil had gone off to Doralis with Lord Nikos of Condos. And that both men would be in attendance tonight. It was why she couldn’t bring herself to go. The last thing she wanted was to see him with someone else. She couldn’t be with someone else knowing he was there. She couldn’t do it even with him in another province. How was she supposed to feel anything but dread knowing that he was around here, touching someone else the way he touched her.
Why couldn’t he be like everyone else and mean nothing to her? It would make everything so much simpler. Why couldn’t she walk away from him? These thoughts had haunted her mind for days now. All while she prepared for the evening. And even now that she had arrived. She had no answers, only more emotions than she cared to.
So she had come to the only logical conclusion. She had two choices. Go and be miserable, or lose herself in someone else and hope everything else faded. If Sil could move on, so could she.
As such, she had taken great care with her appearance. Her signature scent of flowers and spice lingered on her skin. Her blonde hair was worn in loose curls, and she wore no jewels. However, she wore a peplos of pale lavender with embroidery of the palest gold embroidery. The fabric was slit nearly up to her hip on both sides. It was loose but for the simple golden cord tied around her waist, and the sheer fabric clung to her most enticing curves just right.
She was wrapped in a dark cloak when they arrived, and she gave her friend’s hand a squeeze before watching Olympia rush off to meet the man she was looking for. Eleni wasn’t so quick to rush off. She didn’t even take her cloak off at first. Was she really going to go through with this? Could she truly find another man to share her body with and pretend like Sil didn’t exist?
It was now or never.
And with that, she removed the cloak, facing the night and all the possibility it held.

Warm breezes brushed across Nikos’s skin as he wandered the province in search of another willing partner. He’d already spent a wonderfully blissful hour in the arms of a particularly lustful woman. But she had simply been a stop over in the young lord’s plans for the night. Brushing the leaves from his hair and adjusting the set of the band crowning his head, Nikos bid the woman – he didn’t even know her name – a farewell and scooped up the half empty bottle of wine. He’d found a wonderful little stash of food and wine just before happening upon Lady Lustful. Nik came out of the tree line of the grove he’d been traversing and out into and open meadow. His eyes were drawn up to the full moon as it’s light kissed his skin. The sound of frogs drifted to him on the breeze. He must be near the river. Perhaps he’d find Arete there. A slow wicked grin spread across his face as he stepped off in the direction of the croaking amphibians.
As he drew near, a feminine delicate laugh reached his ears. The Condos lord’s smile grew, thinking for a moment that his lovely Retta was waiting for him near the water’s edge. He paused under the low boughs of a luscious tree to peer ahead at the lone figure. The woman at the river was wading into the cool water. Nikos took a long drink from the wine he carried and once again started forward. He quietly approached the river, and was convinced that it was indeed Arete, until he was about ten paces away. Then re recognized the slender form before him. He chuckled low, amused at finding Evie out here this night, but not at all surprised to find her standing in the shallows of the river. ”It would be you I find in the water. Mind that the fish do not nibble your toes, Lady Evangelina.” Nikos walked right up to the bank, once again lifting that bottle of wine to his lips, a teasing smile turning up the corners of his mouth.

With her back facing him, she was entirely oblivious to his arrival until he gave a low chuckle. Glancing over her shoulder, her dancing in the moonlight came to an abrupt halt. Aphrodite was definitely playing with her and enjoying it too much. Even in the moonlight, even with the shadows partly hiding him, even after… everything. She recognized the shape of him and her breath caught. Was it light enough to see the lines in her forehead come together as he spoke.
‘It would be you I find in the water. Mind that the fish do not nibble your toes, Lady Evangelina.’
The dark chestnut curls had broken free and collapsed down her back from her dancing. The corner of her lip played upwards and she slowly looked away from him. Had Aphrodite thrown him into her path for her to remind him that she still existed? To remind him of what they’d lost? Or was he thrown in her path simply to break her heart again? She swallowed, “What’s that supposed to mean?” Her head swung and she was looking over her shoulder at him again and shrugged at least something was nibbling at her.
“Wherever you were going, just…” Her chest squeezed and she sloshed a little deeper into the river. “Just go and leave me alone. You’re good at that… why stop now.” Leaning forward, she was deep enough to swim a little. This wasn’t how she’d planned to impress him, to remind him that she was still here? If Aphrodite wasn’t going to give her some kind of advantage in all of this, then she didn’t want to play this game.
If he wanted more conversation with her, he was going to have to drift deeper into the water.

“Absolutely.” There was no hesitation in his words, nor did he second guess himself as she asked her question. “Is it not the job of a servant to do as he is commanded?” His eyes were on her lips, on the way it tucked into her teeth with a hint of uncertainty. Emilios gave her hand a gentle squeeze, knowing that this was well outside of her usual wheelhouse. And if she had been more assertive in her desires, he may not have been as drawn to her as he was now.
He had a conversation with a priestess one about how desires flourish in women, if it was as sudden and crippling as it was for men. He had been deep into puberty, unable to deny just how much he wanted to learn about the urges of his own body. And since she was the experienced one between the two of them, he had asked her how it was for a woman.
She had laughed at him, had quietly explained that it could be just as intense for women as it was for men, but that a woman would never act upon her urges in the same way as a man would. But they were curious, and often completely uneducated on their body’s and the pleasure that could come from them.
It didn’t surprise him that Theo was curious about it, as he had been. He was only a bit surprised that she had never explored that desire before now. But that didn’t mean that he wasn’t willing and able to do as she asked. He found himself shifting, his body moving so that his leg was on hers. “But you must promise me something.” He said, his hand on her cheek, fingertips moving to softly caress her collarbone, moving to fiddle with the straps of her dress. “I am yours to command, but should things become too much,” he pushed the strap down to the curve of her shoulder, pressing a soft, slow kiss into the hollow there. “I’ll need your word that you will say something.”
His face was close to hers, close enough that he could feel her breath on his cheek. “I do not wish for you to have regrets about what happens here.” Emilios watched her carefully, looking for any indication that he was going too far, and was making too many assumptions from her question. “I can show you everything you may be curious about. But the moment you wish to stop, I shall follow your command. You have my word that you will have total control, and I will not do anything without your permission.” He brushed another piece of hair back, this time placing a kiss on the smooth line of her neck, where her pulse seemed to be racing against the skin.
“I will take no offense, will not force you into a position you do not wish to be in. But,” He kissed just below her ear, “if you trust me, I promise you that I will make you feel things you’ve never felt before. Will make you understand a heat only fire can replicate-- you will burn, my lady, should you wish it.” His tongue darted out, pulling her earlobe into his mouth with a gentle suck before releasing it. “The choice is yours.” He moved so that his body hovered over hers, face to face in the moonlight. “Do I have your word?”
