Somra had arrived at the meeting spot a bit early, tucked into the shadowy corner of an alleyway, she would not be seen unless someone came fairly close to her. She knew how to hide when she needed to.
She was supposed to be meeting Khanh there, and the two of them were going to take a little trip to a noble house to see if they could relieve them of a few of their unnecessary riches. Most noble families would hardly miss what they would take anyways, sure they would make a big fuss about it, but at the end of the day they would still be wealthier than most of the population around them. Frankly, they deserved to be robbed. No one family needed that much money. Somra felt no guilt in stealing from others for her own gain.
She knew little of the task at hand, nor anything about the family that they were about to hit. All she knew was with the men away at war, things were just that much easier to steal. Most able-bodied men had been shipped off, leaving the bare minimum number of guards and such to protect those who stayed.
Khanh had set this up, and had thought it was better that they went in just the two of them. Her guess was it would mostly be her and her skills being put to use, with Khanh there to help out if things managed to go wrong. She hadn’t really seen him do much in terms of sneaking, mostly his use was his strength, and as much as she hated to admit it, his intelligence.
He seemed to know what he was doing, at least from what she could tell.
She was a bit nervous, because the two of them had yet to do a job on their own, everything else they had done so far had been with at least one other person. She wasn’t sure how she felt about Khanh, he still managed to get on her nerves, but at the same time she was oddly attracted to him.
But she pushed both things aside, they had a job to do. There was no point on dwelling on how good looking he was, and they were working on putting their ugly past behind them. Perhaps this was his idea of bonding between them. Akhmad could have just as easily joined him on this job and done the same things she could for the most part.
Either way, she did not question his motives, happy to be involved in the groups work and to have something to do while they waited to do the actual job they had come to Colchis to do. She wondered where they would go once they were done here, but she wasn’t given much information until the last minute when it was deemed necessary.
A fact she was still working on dealing with.
She spotted Khanh and moved from her spot to join him, not saying anything quite yet, her dark eyes trained on him and she waited for him to speak or motion first.

For Khanh, they’d already been in two manors. Why not the final before the larger hit? He and Akhmad had hit the old Leventi manor alone and run into a rather loud and obnoxious young woman for their trouble. With nothing to show for the misadventure except a vague distaste for Greek women and an entertaining story, Khanh and Akhmad had escaped out of the girl’s bedroom window and melted into the night. Ideally, nothing like that would happen now. There were people living in this house, as well as servants but he and Somra were creeping in during the dark of night. Khanh had food in a pouch at his hip in case of dogs and a khopesh for any guards who took umbrage with their presence.
Though the Sariqas lived together, they were very much like a real family, where members came and went as it pleased them. So long as the rules of secrecy were kept, it mattered very little if the individuals chose to spend their time pickpocketing or sightseeing. When they were ordered to bring back food or to scout things, that took precedence, but otherwise, their time was their own. Khanh had told Somra where and when to meet, but had his own things to take care of. She hadn’t disobeyed a direct order thus far and so when she melted out of the shadows and to his side, he wasn’t surprised in the least.
Without breaking stride, Khanh progressed up the winding stone path towards the upper echelon of Greek society, with his smaller companion in tow. None of these houses were particularly difficult to break into and this one was no exception. Pointing Somra towards the far corner of the house’s gate, Khanh followed in her wake as a silent shadow, waiting for her to scale the wall. It wasn’t a terribly large wall; short enough for him to reach up and haul himself atop it where he crouched like a cat, looking down into the courtyard. He held a hand out across Somra’s path, attempting to bar her from descending just yet.
If there were dogs, they weren’t on this side, it seemed. Khanh withdrew his arm from Somra’s way and dropped down, landing in another crouch, eyes still sweeping the empty courtyard. He half expected the guards to be upped in response to the theft from the Drakos house, but so far, there was no evidence anything was done. Possibly because this manor was widely believed to be mostly empty. That was the local gossip, anyway, but Khanh was curious. While he was a thief, he was also an intensely inquisitive person. He liked to walk around people’s houses and it was more thrilling when they were home.
There was also talk around the marketplace that the old baron who owned the house was mad. That was where Khanh could be found in the early morning; sitting and listening to the locals talk. It was how he was picking up their language so quickly and also how he was learning where might be worth the Sariqas’s time.
For the few seconds more that he waited, he heard nothing but the sound of his own breathing and the distant calls of night birds. The air was completely still. With no wind, it both benefited them in that their scent would not carry elsewhere, but blocked him from knowing where others might be. In the distance, near the front doors of the compound, he heard male voices but couldn’t make out what they were saying. Their Greek was too fast, for one, and for another, the distance and stone blurred the sounds, making the syllables slide over one another in strange distortions. Khanh glanced over at Somra and flashed a smile. They knew where the guards were now and besides? What did a thief need with a front door when there were perfectly good windows on this side of the house?
Inclining his chin, he gestured up to the second story, stood, and started across the courtyard at a healthy clip. He’d seen Somra in action several times and didn’t worry for a single second that she’d either misunderstand what he wanted or that she would have trouble. She scaled walls more gracefully and with more ease than spiders did. It was amazing.
He reached the house’s side, reached up to find a grip, and pulled himself upward. The climb was quick and within a few moments, he was crouched on the ledge outside the window, helping to ease it open. Slipping inside as silently as a shadow, Khanh again crouched on the ground, waiting for his vision to adjust to see exactly what kind of room they’d wound up in.

Somra followed Khanh easily at his side, neither of them missing a beat as they headed towards where ever it was that Khanh had decided they were breaking into that night. Somra had learned her lesson on asking questions, and as much as it bothered her to not know where they were going or what they were getting into, she was doing her best to just it happen.
Somra scaled the small wall as she was directed, waiting as his arm blocked her way. She took a few silent, deep breaths to calm herself. She was still working on the whole being told what to do thing as well. She had not expected all of this upon joining the group. She had thought there would be at least some sort of a freedom, but so far she felt more trapped than she had in a long time.
She slipped down off the wall after him, making the most minimal amount of noise, no one would hear the sound as she dropped down, she would be surprised if Khanh even could despite being right beside her.
When he motioned to the side of the house, she knew what she had to do. She blew him a quick and silent kiss before her bare feet took off across the ground, no noise being made as she dashed to the house, taking a running leap. Her hand found a hold as if it had been planted there perfectly for her, and she began the quick ascent up the side of the building, her hands and feet quickly finding placement as if she had climbed the side of this exact building a million times. She did not need to stop and think or feel, it just came naturally to her.
Once Khanh joined her, she helped him carefully ease the window open. She let him go first once more before slipping in after him, letting her eyes adjust as well. She looked around. It looked like they were in some sort of bedroom. The furniture was extravagant, and way too much even for Somra’s tastes.
“Someone has something to prove.” She whispered, her voice barely audible. She knew that Khanh would catch what she said, but it would not be heard by anyone who was not as close to her as he was. She waited there, eyes on him as she did what she was supposed to, what she was expected to, waited for instructions.
She had no idea what they were here for, or if they were even here for anything. Perhaps Khanh was just as bored as Somra was and sought out the thrill of at least doing something slightly dangerous.
Though really, what were the odds of them being caught here? The place seemed oddly quiet, even for this late at night. There was usually some sounds, noises that indicated that people lived there, but it was eerily silent and she wondered where the hell he had even lead her this time. But she did not question him.

He waited there on his haunches, fingertips pressed to the ground, eyes roving the shadowed interior of the room. They appeared to have slithered into a bedroom of some kind. The bed consisted of one of the most enormous bed frames Khanh had ever seen. Heaps of furs lay across its thickly stuffed mattress and he crept over to the edge on knuckles and toes, peeking up to see if there might be an occupant. No one was there and Khanh finally rose to his feet. He looked down at Somra and nodded to her that she could stand.
“Someone has something to prove,” she breathed into the silence and he flashed a grin in response.
“I’d like the option,” he whispered just as softly. They were absolutely here because he was bored. Ever since they’d come to Colchis, Nahash hadn’t been acting like himself. He’d been preoccupied and absent. Left to his own devices, Khanh chose to see what offerings Midas might have for the group. Whatever Nahash had going on, Khanh suspected it didn’t benefit the rest of them. Tonight was to relieve boredom and simply to explore. If they got loot? Lovely. If not, at least they weren’t holed up in the hideout with nothing to show for their cramped existence.
He’d taken Somra with him partially because Zai was busy and because she was preferable to Akhmad. For a mute man, Akhmad was shockingly sassy and Khanh didn’t love the eye rolling and the ‘better than thou’ tendency that Akhmad could whip out at a moment’s notice. It wasn’t that he disliked the man but sometimes, just sometimes he didn’t want to be looked at like he didn’t know what he was doing. Akhmad could keep those erroneous opinions to himself, thank you very much. Besides, Somra was prettier to watch when she moved. Infinitely better than Akhmad ever would be.
Khanh lifted his eyebrows at Somra and gestured expansively. She could do what she liked. He’d wanted her obedience when they were at the wall but since there was no real plan, she was free to do as she liked, so long as she didn’t get them caught. By now, he trusted her enough that she wouldn’t make those sorts of mistakes. The longer they knew each other, the deeper his trust would go, and the less he would keep track of her.
He approached the bed and leaned over to press on it, testing the softness. His hands sank deep into the luxuriant furs and he glanced over his shoulder at Somra, frowning and grinning at the same time. Oh these were nice. He wished he could take them but there wasn’t an easy way to transport something like this. Resting a knee on the side, he brought the other onto the bed so that he was now fully on the mattress and flopped down.
“Why travel?” he whispered. “This is cozy. Come. Try.” He patted the other side.

Somra couldn’t pretend that if she was given the option to have luxurious things, she wouldn’t have them. After all, that had been what her entire life had been spent chasing so far. She had been going after anything she could think of, doing anything she could to try and get money. To earn this exact lifestyle, or at least to seduce and marry a man who could provide it for her. So far nothing had worked, though she had come very close once.
But instead, here she was. Breaking into the houses of people she envied instead of living in one herself. She didn’t feel bad stealing from these people, they had more than enough to lose. And besides, she deserved to have nice things.
Somra had been busy looking through drawers and such in the room, slipping a couple of pieces of jewelry into the hidden pockets sewn in her dress. But if she was being honest, none of it was worth all that much, the place seemed to have had most of it’s valuables removed. She didn’t want to leave empty handed though.
She hadn’t even noticed Khanh climbing onto the bed until he spoke and her attentions turned back towards him. She couldn’t help the small grin on her face at the sight of the large man laying on the fancy bed. A completely different image than the one of the imposing thief she knew him to be.
She crept over, her footsteps silent as usual, and she placed a hand on the soft fur. She bit her bottom lip a little to keep from making any noises as she felt the softness under her fingers. So this was what it was like, to live in the lap of luxury. This was what she had wanted, more than anything in the world. She didn’t even care about finding a husband who loved her, not if she could have this.
She climbed onto the bed and laid herself down beside Khanh, the grin on her face unable to be helped as she enjoyed how the bed felt under her. After sleeping on the floor for as long as she had been, anything would feel comfortable, but this… this was a whole other level of comfort.
She let her eyes close, just for a moment as she imagined this was her bed. That she slept here every single night, that this was her life.
And that the person beside her was some rich husband with lands and title, not the thief that she had had such a rough relationship with thus far.
It was a nice dream, but it was just that, a dream.
She let her eyes open and she shifted to lay on her side, looking over at Khanh as she propped her head up with one hand.
“I say we kill who ever lives here and move in ourselves.” She teased, though she wasn’t dumb, and she knew obviously that they would be easily caught if they did such a thing.
She had to admit, even though they probably shouldn’t be just laying here in the bed of a house they had just broken in to, it was nice to have at least a few moments when the two of them weren’t at each other’s throats.
Somra paused a moment, before on impulse she leaned over and pressed a kiss to his lips. There was about a fifty percent chance that he would be pissed, and fifty percent chance he’d just go with it.

Though he’d invited her, he didn’t actually expect her to come over. His relationship with her was very much like he might have with a gorgeous feral cat. She might scratch him, she might rub up against him and then scratch him....But, like a cat, her ways were complicated and unknowable. So his eyebrows raised when she turned to look at him and the bed over, and raised even further when she moved towards him. The frame and mattress were enormous and he didn’t have to shift at all to make room for her. Her shadowed outline wandered closer.
Slowly, silently, she eased herself onto it. This close, he could see the smile curving her lips. His own grew as she settled next to him but then he turned his face away, shifting to pillow his hands beneath his head, his eyes drifting up to the cloth canopy above. So this was what it must feel like; a lord and his lady, resting comfortably surrounded by their opulence. He could definitely get used to this.
Somra shifted to lay on her side and he looked over at her as her soft voice breathed into the quiet between them. “I say we kill who ever lives here and move in ourselves.” That was a thought. His gaze rested on her large, fathomless dark eyes. She had an innocence to her features, a youthful sort of softness that made her seem both younger and more naive than he knew her to be. How long would they get away with such a scheme, he wondered? He and his lady of the manor? An hour, possibly. Maybe less. Maybe a little more.
“We’ll move Akhmad into the furthest room,” Khanh whispered. “Nahash into the next closest. Zai and Tiye will have to share, I think. This, of course, will be my room…” he trailed off, having about to make a quip that she was welcome to share, but the way she looked at him made him fall silent. All at once, she was the only thing filling his vision and a soft warmth pressed itself against his lips. His body responded before his thoughts did. Tilting his head to the side, mouth opening, the kiss deepened for a few seconds until he realized what they were doing, as well as where.
“I was joking,” he whispered. “We’re not actually going to kill these people.” Of course...if she was going to reward such things…”Come,” he sat up and took her by the hand, taking her with him off the bed. “Let’s see if we can’t get you something pretty to wear.” Something shiny with glittering stones.
This room was fairly barren and Khanh was trying desperately hard not to read into that kiss. But his lips tingled with it and he was much less concerned about exploring this place anymore. He wanted to find an out of the way alcove or corner to press her against and explore her instead. He did not, however, because he was fairly certain that she didn't actually want to, and that Nahash might stab him.

Somra did find his musings entertaining to think about as he declared that Akhmad would have a room on the other side of the manor, it was fun to think about, though she had other things on her mind at the moment, and she knew that it was never something that could actually happen either way. The thought of their little group as some sort of dysfunctional rich family was entertaining at least.
As he suddenly pulled away from their kiss and sat up, she frowned. She had no idea if he could see her frown in the dark, but how dare he just up and walk away from her like that? She was kissing him, had been intending on kissing him for much longer than that, and he had the nerve to break it and move away from her.
See if she ever kissed him again. Jerk.
She intended on commenting, telling him exactly that, but then he said what he wanted to do. Find her a fancy dress, and suddenly her anger calmed again. Somra could never say no to a pretty dress. As much as she had been through, as tough as she was, she really was just a young girl who wanted nice clothes and a man to give her his undivided attention.
Or just give her money, that could also work.
Either way, she followed Khanh as he pulled her off the bed and lead her to go and find something nice for her to wear, and likely take with her. She wasn’t going to give up nice clothing that easily.
And besides, if she could find the right dress, she could make Khanh regret ever pulling away from her kiss.
She moved silently as she dug through closets and chests. Someone in this fancy house had to have something.
Perfect.
She pulled the dress out quickly, looking back at Khanh with a little smirk.
“Stay.” She whispered softly. She moved into another room quickly, slipping out of her clothing and into the dress she had found. He had seen her change before, that wasn’t an issue, but she wanted him to be surprised by the dress and the way she wore it. Surprisingly, it fit her rather well considering it was from strangers closet.
She moved to step out of the room and back into the room where Khanh had stood, just enough light seeping through the windows of the room that he could see her a bit better than the other room.
The dress itself was light and airy, clearly one meant for summer. The top was a light yellow in colour, fading slowly into blue until the bottom was completely bright blue. It hugged her curves, cinched at the waist, it left her back exposed. Cuts and hems in all the right places showed teasing glances of her legs as she did a little spin for him before smirking, cocking her hip with one hand on it.
“Well?” She asked with a raised eyebrow. She loved the dress, not only because it showed just enough skin to be tempting without being too much, but also because she knew with the details and the dye, it could not have been cheap.

They left the room silently, keeping to the shadows as they slipped into the next one. The second room was as barren as the first. It was almost as if this wing of the house wasn’t used all that often. Khanh had never served in a great house nor had he ever lived in one, so he wasn’t totally sure what the filthy rich did with all of their stuff except keep it decoratively arranged in empty spaces. They moved to a third room where Somra began the arduous task of checking through drawers and chests, while he took point at the door, keeping a lookout in case they needed to slip out the nearest window.
He glanced over his shoulder when he heard her hands stilling and then rustling. She’d found something. All he could see was a stretch of pale fabric in the darkness with a vague dresslike shape. Somra came towards him, the fabric in her arms, and he looked down at her, leaning a little, but she didn’t look up to kiss him. Instead she uttered one word: stay.
Khanh almost never took orders from anyone but Nahash. This one, however, he was fairly certain he’d be happy to obey and so he leaned against the doorframe, arms crossing over his chest, and nodded at her to continue. As if she needed the permission. That was something he was slowly coming to accept as one of her quirks: that she was rather sure of her own actions already and did not like to wait for confirmation. She would, of course, if he demanded it, but if given the option, she liked to be her own master.
The wait wasn’t long but he shifted from foot to foot the entire time. There was an anticipation to her presence that hadn’t been there a few minutes ago. Now all he wanted was for her to come back. Finally she materialized, more curvy than he’d ever seen her. The dress was stunning but she made it so, her curves filling it out in all the most tantalizing of ways. Khanh leaned his head back against the doorframe, a small smile playing along his lips as she twirled for him.
“Well?”
“Well, if you put something else on, you’ll be in trouble,” he whispered and held a hand out to her, taking up a pose that would start a dance back in Egypt. If she knew it and wanted to, the dance would take them the length of the room, twirling her into him and away again several times. His hand would rest on the small of her back and they’d move together in the kind of rhythm that was never seen anywhere in places of repute. It was the kind of dance that led to other types of play. Not that he expected that here in this mansion, but he wanted his hands on her. He wanted her to say yes.

Somra had had no idea how Khanh was going to react, but that seemed to be the theme of this day. She had no clue what had come over her, why she had chosen to kiss him, or why now she was putting herself in some fancy noble ladies dress to impress him, but here she was. She had always known she was attracted to him, but he was also a man she had hated up until just a few short days ago. When he had finally apologized to her and started to treat her like a human, she had become less resistant and had been working on listening for orders if there were any. It seemed like their new dynamic had been working, at least in terms of the two of them getting along for work reasons. But this was a whole different dynamic, and something she had no idea what she wanted out of it.
But the attention was definitely a start.
She held her breath without realizing it as she waited for his reply, and then a grin broke out across her face at his reaction.
She had spent enough time in Egypt to realize his intentions when he held his hand out for her, and she didn’t hesitate before taking it. She was not overly familiar with the dance, but with him leading her and her natural grace with her movements, it was easy enough for her to follow.
The dance was a lead up, that much she knew. Her heart raced in her chest with every step, knowing what the end of the dance would likely bring them to. She didn’t move to pull away or stop it, and while all of this had not been planned, she knew what she was doing and she was fine with what would happen. She wanted it to happen.
The dance ended and Somra gazed up at Khanh, shifting to her tip toes, she pressed a kiss to his lips before whispering.
“Lets go.”
She didn’t think there was much here for them to take anyways, the place seemed a little boring, and a little empty. They wouldn’t find a fortune here, at least not without doing some digging that could alert people to their whereabouts. She had the dress, if Khanh didn’t decide he needed to rip it off her or something, and that was good enough for her. Plus the few bits of jewellery she had slipped into the hidden pockets of her own dress.
She didn’t want to wait any longer, and she highly doubted Khanh wanted to either. So she quickly grabbed her dress and took his hand, leading him back towards the window they had come in from. With her old dress gripped in one hand, she made her way over the edge of the balcony and down the side of the building. As much as she would have loved to just be with him right then and there, she wasn’t about to risk getting caught because of it. They would find a nearby spot that would work just as well, and be at least a little less likely to get them arrested.
