Marietta didn’t even realize she had dragged her sister all the way to their home until they were through the front doors and her grip had finally relaxed. Her heart was still pounding about the scene outside the senate. The whole situation, every last bit of it, was… infuriating. Why were people getting angry about rumors? Why was nothing being done for the people of Athenia? And why was… Elias acting like that?
Was he always like that? Marietta questioned to herself. When they were young… well, they were kids. They would play together. Marietta would visit the Stravos and help him practice his lines for his plays. She would go to every show. She really saw Elias as a brother to her. He was equal parts infuriating, as brothers were, but also someone she truly cared about. And this was why she had been feeling so much pain for months now. She had been trying to talk to him, to send him letters to find out… something. Anything. She had gone so far as to go to the palatai only to run into Emilia and then be turned away because of a sudden ‘meeting’ he had to attend.
Marietta wasn’t a girl who ever cried. While she may be the most nervous of her sisters, shy and willing to hide behind Evi and Sanasa’s words lest it is something that requires Marietta protecting them... she wasn’t weak. The Antonis was a military house. They were a house of soldiers, strong and proud. Marietta had her self doubts and confidence issues that plagued her on a daily basis, but she didn’t allow these thoughts to turn her to a weepy, dramatic girl. She knew how to bury them inside, only really exposing some of her vulnerabilities to her family, and really then it was only Vasia when she had gone to her cousin for advice.
So these… tears that were trying to push their way out of her eyes was so unlike Marietta. She didn’t know if it was because she was confused, angry, or hurt… or all three. She hated them though. She didn’t want anyone to see them, least of all Hebe who had certainly never seen Marietta even come close to tears. They were improper, they were dramatic they were… everything Marietta was not.
She had turned to Hebe once they had entered their home and had let go of her wrist. But she didn’t look at Hebe at first. Instead, she had stared hard at the ceiling, trying to dry the tears from her eyes so she didn’t look at Hebe with her glassy look. Marietta wiped the few stray droplets that had managed to escape, took a deep breath, and turned her gaze on her youngest sister.
“Let’s not tell mom and dad about today, okay?” Marietta smoothed her younger sister’s hair before resting her hands gently on her shoulders. “And if you see Elias in the palatai… or any of his family don’t approach them. For me okay? Let’s avoid the Stravos for now. At least… at least until more things are… clear.” Like how much of the rumors actually are true. Marietta cleared her throat. “Do you have to be at the palatai, Hebe? Couldn’t you come home for a bit longer?”

Hebe hated Elias … he didn’t even deserve the title ‘lord’ … for what he said about her family. If her father had taken the throne, Athenia would not be in ruins now. It would be thriving under his rule. She had no idea why he had not wanted it. Who wouldn’t long to rule a kingdom? Maybe he hadn’t wanted the responsibility that would take his attention away from his family. She’d been upset when she had first heard about it. If he had said ‘yes’ instead of ‘no.’ she would have been a princess. Now that she was older, she respected his decision though she did not pretend to understand it.
To throw such cruel words at his daughters proved that Elias was indeed a moron, and predicted what kind of ruler he would be. He was, Hebe thought, the kind of man who wanted to be King so that he would feel important, not because he cared for the people of Athenia. He had already confirmed the latter by letting the commoners starve. She believed that he would ignore his duties and just bask in the glory of his exalted position. But did it really matter? Queen Persephone had returned, and when she was ready, she would take back her throne and throw Elias in the dungeon for treason. Maybe she would even chop off his head and put it on a spike. That was what he deserved.
Hebe thought of these things as Marietta pulled her away and down the streets until they reached their house. Her sister was as silent as she was, and angry by the way she stalked down the road. The young girl couldn’t remember ever seeing her so furious. She was usually the peacemaker who calmed down her sisters when they got into arguments. Hebe hoped Marietta didn’t take her indignation out on her when they went inside. Would she pull her all the way up to the wing where their bedrooms were?
Marietta let go of her hand as soon as the doors shut behind them. She didn’t look at Hebe but stared up at the ceiling as if trying to gain control of her emotions. When she finally lowered her gaze, the youngest Antonis could see tears glistening in her eyes. Marietta never cried, just as she never got angry. She was going to kill Elias herself for hurting her sister with his callous words.
Finally Marietta spoke, smoothing Hebe’s hair before taking both her hands.
“Let’s not tell mom and dad about today, okay? And if you see Elias in the palatai… or any of his family don’t approach them. For me okay? Let’s avoid the Stravos for now. At least… at least until more things are… clear.”
Hebe nodded. She liked Danae and practically worshiped Chara, but they were on their brother’s side, and she had already decided to avoid them because of her secret. The young girl didn’t always think before she spoke, and she couldn’t risk the Stravos knowing that Queen Persephone was alive and back in Athenia.
“Do you have to be at the palatai, Hebe? Couldn’t you come home for a bit longer?”
Hebe squeezed her sister’s hands. “If I don’t keep to my schedule, I could lose my position.” Now that she had spoken against Elias, she might lose it anyway. “Princess Emilia needs me. I’m worried about her. If Elias becomes King, I’m afraid that he will murder her and make it look like an accident. I will be careful, Marietta. Nobody suspects me of anything. I’m just a silly little girl who poses no threat. I may be able to do more good there than I can here.”
She kept hoping that Persephone would contact her. Hebe had connections in the palati. She was young, but she could be of assistance if the Queen could look past her youth. Should I tell Marietta my secret? The Queen instructed me to tell no one. But knowing could set her mind at ease.

She didn’t know what purpose Hebe’s words were meant for. Certainly it wasn’t to calm Marietta. There was so much to unpack in just a few sentences. The more Hebe spoke, the more Marietta felt her heart squeeze.
I’m afraid he’ll murder her and make it look like an accident.
Marietta was hurt. She was confused. She was angry at Elias. But she didn’t think he was capable of murder. Was he? “Elias wouldn’t do that?” She meant to say it like a statement but her voice cracked at the end. She was a mess of feelings, each more confusing than the next.
She wanted to believe in her friend. She wanted to go back to being six years old, stumbling across a nine-year-old Elias and start playing with him. She wanted to go back to simpler times of watching him in his plays. That child wouldn’t grow up to be a murderer, right? He wouldn’t… hurt people… right?
But why did she feel so uneasy when it came to Hebe’s own safety? If she had complete trust in her friend, she wouldn’t feel the desire to keep Hebe home. She wouldn’t have made a scene earlier in the day. She would have… been confident in her friend.
But Marietta wasn’t confident in Elias. Athenia was a mess and all rumors pointed at him. Marietta once thought she knew the world. She felt confident she did, in fact. She tried to help teach Hebe and Evi what was right and proper. But now… Marietta realized she was still a child, lost and confused. She had some sort of overblown confidence that came with the fact that she had lived longer than them. But what Hebe said about Elias potentially killing the princess could be… right. Or at least the fear wasn’t entirely unfounded. Was it?
Marietta took one deep breath trying to keep control of her emotions. “Hebe, you’re not silly, but you are a little girl,” Marietta said after a moment. “And if it were true that Elias were to try to hurt the Princess… what’s stopping him from hurting you too?”
This conversation felt wrong. Marietta feared everything. She was afraid of talking to strangers, she was afraid of the dark, she was even afraid of loud noises. What she never feared was her best friend, a man she looked to as a brother, hurting her youngest sister. And yet that did not stop the words coming from her mouth. As important as Emilia was, and as much as Marietta prayed for the Princess’s wellbeing, her sister was her priority.
“Hebe, I know that you could do good there. Princess Emilia certainly needs a friend. I spoke to her recently, and… I can sense her troubled mind.” Marietta was choosing her words carefully. She didn’t want to accidentally patronize her sister. “But… while you might not be seen as a threat, maybe you’ll be seen as an… opportunity.” Marietta’s mind kept whirling, now thinking of worst-case scenarios. She was the youngest daughter to her father, the head of the second oldest house in Athenia. She was a close companion to the Princess and future ruler of Athenia. “You’re not nobody. You’re special. And that makes me worried, Hebe.”

She was the youngest daughter to her father, the head of the second oldest house in Athenia. She was a close companion to the Princess and future ruler of Athenia. “You’re not nobody. You’re special. And that makes me worried, Hebe.”
Marietta didn’t seem too certain when she claimed that Elias would never murder Princess Emilia. Hebe knew that they were childhood friends and her sister didn’t want to believe anything bad about him, but the facts spoke for themselves. “He has already killed. Many times. The famine is his fault and people die every day from starvation. Haven’t you seen them when you go shopping? The last time I was at the market I saw a little boy who was all skin and bones. I bought him a meat pie. He devoured it as if he had never seen food before. So I bought him another one and some to take back to his family.”
Marietta needed to accept the truth. Until she did, Elias could use her. As far as Hebe knew, her parents were not on his side. He could kidnap their second-born daughter and force House Antonis to support him. The young brunette was as afraid for her sister as Marietta was for her. Maybe now was a good time for her to open her eyes to his tyranny after those hurtful words he had flung at them less than an hour ago.
Hebe rolled her eyes when her sister called her a little girl. “I am not!” In some ways, she thought she was more intelligent than Marietta. She wasn’t book smart, but she was clever in a practical way. It had been her idea to hand out food to the mob that night they had rebelled. Because of that idea, their manor had not been destroyed. Her eidetic memory worked to her advantage too, giving her a lot of knowledge to rely on … when she was able to control it.
[/i]“And if it were true that Elias were to try to hurt the Princess… what’s stopping him from hurting you too?”[/i]
She supposed that she could be kidnapped and held hostage instead of Marietta, but it would be more difficult for Elias to get to her. Marietta would go with him willingly. He’d have to haul Hebe away kicking and screaming.
“Well … nothing,” she admitted. “I am no threat to him, even after what I said today. He has more important problems to deal with. No matter what I say about him, who is going to listen to a fourteen-year-old? I don’t think I’m a little girl anymore, but many people still do. He might convince Princess Emilia to let me go, but even that would look suspicious and be an insult to our family.”
As she had hoped, Marietta was not fooled by her feeble defense. Hebe wanted her to be worried about her, so that she would no longer trust Elias and see him for who he truly was. He was not her friend, and he probably never had been.
Her sister had spoken to Princess Emilia? That was more than she had done lately. Hebe was nearly positive that Elias was intentionally keeping the two girls apart. Had he asked Marietta to feed the princess lies about him so that she would agree to marry him? Hebe hoped her sister had not been used that way.
“You’re not nobody. You’re special. And that makes me worried, Hebe.”
Hebe stepped forward and hugged her sister. “Thank you, Marietta, but I can’t leave the palati now.” She lowered her voice. Maybe revealing her secret would help her sister see the truth about Elias. If nothing else, it would give her hope. With any luck, she wouldn’t go running to him with the news. “I may be needed by the Queen.
“Queen Persephone is alive,” she whispered. “Those rumors are true. I saw her at the harvest festival and followed her. She even spoke to me and told me not to tell anyone that she was back. I think she’s waiting for the right moment to retake her throne. I offered to help her from within the palati, so I have to be there in case she has a task for me.” Hebe didn’t tell her sister that Persephone had turned her down because of her age. And who knew? If she needed a contact inside the palati, then she still might call on her.
She took her sister's hands. “You can’t breathe a word of this to anyone, Marietta. If you do, I may really be in danger. Elias will torture me if he thinks I know where she is."

She took her sister's hands. “You can’t breathe a word of this to anyone, Marietta. If you do, I may really be in danger. Elias will torture me if he thinks I know where she is."
Oh, not yet. But lo and behold your savior appears. Marietta could still hear Elias’s voice ringing in her mind. The teasing tone to it, always capable of drawing a smile and an eye-roll from the girl. This was only three months ago. Three months! And yet so much has changed. So much heartbreak and suffering and violence all… at the hand of her friend.
She didn’t want to listen to Hebe. It would be easy to cast her off as a child. What did she know? She’s just fourteen. Her imagination is running away with her. She’s letting the lies of other adults affect her judgment. She’s wrong.
But she wasn’t. Marietta wanted so badly to think that there was a reason for all of this. There was a reason for Elias to move into the palatai. There was a reason for him to hire the pirates to attack the ships. There was a reason for this famine, and for these riots. There had to be something that Marietta and Hebe didn’t see. He couldn’t be evil.
Marietta accepted the hug, but when Hebe spoke everything felt like it stopped. Queen Persephone is alive.
Queen Persephone is… alive? That didn’t make sense. If she was alive then why was she not on the throne? Why was she allowing all these people to starve? Why was she not trying to gather reinforcements, allies, and marching back to the palatai? Why was she letting all of this go on?
Once again, Marietta wanted to just brush this aside. Hebe was a child. But just because she was a child didn’t mean she knew nothing. In fact, Hebe’s memory was flawless. There was little room for doubt. Hebe wouldn’t make the mistake of mistaking her for someone else. Hebe was better than that, smarter than that. And if she said she spoke to the Queen then Marietta would believe her. As much as she wished to still see her little sister as a baby, she knew that she was not. Marietta trusted her.
Which made this so much more difficult. She stood up straight once again and her eyes shot to the ceiling. Oh gods, what is it that you are planning? She took a deep breath trying to regain control of her emotions and thoughts. Marietta began to pace. Everything was whirling. Everything was terrifying.
Elias will torture me if he thinks I know where she is.
“All the more reason for you to stay home.” Marietta stopped pacing. She looked at Hebe. So many emotions flashed across her face at once. Shock, fear, worry, stress, all were prevalent in her eyes. “Hebe, I... “ Marietta was at a loss for words. She didn’t know the best way to express her emotions. It wasn’t unusual to see her struggle to talk, but she never had such difficulty with her own family. But this situation was complex, far more than Marietta had expected.
“Father needs to at least be told, Hebe.” Marietta said quietly. She bit her lip. “Father would know what to do. He… he could help.” He could make sure Hebe was protected, and the Queen was safe. “This isn’t a story, Hebe. I don’t want you to play the hero… I can’t see you get hurt.”

Hebe watched her sister as she processed the unexpected news. Marietta looked up at the ceiling, took a deep breath, and started pacing. She’s shocked, just as I was when I first saw Queen Persephone, and probably wondering the same things, such as why she prefers to conceal herself instead of taking back her throne. The Queen saw how her kingdom had deteriorated. Why had she not revealed herself and thrown Elias in the dungeon?
There must be some reason she couldn’t do that. Maybe Elias had too many supporters or she was afraid that he would harm her sister, as Emilia seemed completely in his thrall. Perhaps she was raising an army even now to overpower him. Hebe wished she knew where Persephone was and that she would contact her and let her help in whatever plans she was making. She had to still be in Athenia somewhere.
I shouldn’t have said anything. Even to Marietta. The Queen made me promise to tell no one. Hebe trusted Marietta. Her sister had always been protective of her, worrying for her whenever she did anything reckless. But what if she thought that Hebe was wrong about Elias? Maybe she didn’t think he was capable of torturing her baby sister.
No. Marietta must see the truth now. She knew that he was capable of cruelty. If not, she wouldn't plead for Hebe to remain at home.
“I can’t, Marietta. Elias will be suspicious if I don’t return. I’m sure he knows my schedule. He must keep himself informed about everything that goes on at the palati. Our entire family will be in peril if I stay. He will know that we are against him.” Hebe wasn’t book-smart like Marietta and Evi, but she was practical.
Marietta wanted to tell their father. Hebe sank down on the nearest chair. “I promised I would keep Queen Persephone’s presence a secret. I told you, but if too many people know, then it’s only a matter of time until someone leaks the news to Elias. I don’t want to be responsible for causing her death.” Her sister was right about one thing: their father would know what to do and he would never risk the safety of his youngest daughter or any member of his family.
“I know this isn’t a story, Marietta. I pose no threat to Elias now. When I’m at the palati, I act like I’m silly and shallow. I started doing it hoping that people would not be so guarded around me and might speak of things that the Queen needed to know. Now I’m glad I did. For once, I’m not annoyed that nobody takes me seriously.”

This was an odd crossroads that Marietta was at. On one hand, Hebe was a child. She was sweet, she was adorable, she was silly and she warmed Marietta to her core just by giving her that signature bright smile. But, on the other hand… Marietta always took her sister seriously. She knew she was a child, but she knew her sister was capable of great things. She knew she was intelligent and perceptive. She had the bravery Marietta lacked, the bravery an Antonis should have. Hebe was in every way… special.
But it didn’t hurt any less having to look at Hebe in a different way. Marietta had to look at Hebe as something she was dreading to do for years… an adult. What her little sister was making were adult decisions. Marietta wanted to just put Hebe in a bubble and keep her away from the adult world, but Hebe found her way into it faster than Marietta anticipated.
Nothing she was saying was wrong. She really didn’t want to believe her friend to be so dangerous, but she couldn’t… not believe it. Marietta wasn’t blind, she was just… hopeful. But if Marietta feared for her sister in the palatai, perhaps she was already beyond hope.
Marietta always saw Elias as a brother, but the fact of the matter was… he was not her family. Hebe was her family, her precious sister, and Marietta would always put her and any other Antonis as her priority before anyone else.
Hebe wasn’t wrong. It would be… unusual if she just suddenly left the palatai. But she did go a little far, stating it would say where the Antonis aligned. The Antonis didn’t have an alignment, not that Marietta knew at least. That was for her father and Uncle Lacides to decide. With that being said… they should have one, right? It was the time for the Antonis to drop their neutrality. Hebe clearly supported the Xanthos, as did Vasia, and Marietta… well, she was on the fence until today. Evi would come along right? She was having… feelings for Elias, but that wouldn’t shroud her judgment right?
Then again, Evi did tell Marietta once that if Elias said the sky was red, she would believe him.
Gods, this was messed up. The only one who could really make a decision on this was her father. And thus that was the one thing Marietta would not back down on. He wasn’t at the manor at the current moment, but when he returned Marietta would make sure to speak with him. This was… far beyond these two girls. “Okay, okay,” Marietta said quietly. “We’ll just… keep acting normal. We’ll pretend not to know anything. But the moment dad comes home we are both talking to him. He’ll know what to do.” And… he would keep Hebe safe. If he told Hebe to stay home, she would have to listen then right? And if he told Marietta that Hebe was right and it was best to stay at the palatai… well she would believe him. For now, they should just act casual, at least until more is known.

Hebe was absolutely positive that her father would support Queen Persephone if he knew she was alive. He never spoke of his political views in her presence, but she didn’t think that he would approve of the way Elias was running the kingdom. If he had to choose a side, it wold be the Queen’s. He did have another option. He could assert his own claim to the throne. As a young child, she had dreamed that he would become King so that she could be called ‘Princess Hebe.’ After King Minas died, she had hoped that her father would take his place. At that time, only months ago, women weren’t yet allowed to rule.
When Persephone became Queen, the young brunette was pleased that the law had been changed in favor of women. She was Princess Emilia’s lady-in-waiting and had had a few conversations with her older sister. Persephone was intelligent and likable and Hebe thought she would make an excellent Queen. She was glad then that her father didn’t challenge her. But when she disappeared, she wished again that he would have taken the crown. He would have done so much better than Elias at ruling Athenia. The people would have plenty of food and would have been content. The kingdom would be thriving now, and instead of rioting, the people would be dancing in the streets.
Now that Persephone was back, the youngest Antonis wanted her to rule again. Therefore, her father must think the same. If she stopped going to the palati every two weeks, Elias would might act against the entire family. She wished she could tell Marietta that he wasn’t her friend anymore. Hebe knew that he had been once, but power had gone to his head. In order to be King, he would not hesitate to kill Marietta and every member of her family if they stood in his way. That’s how it went in the tales she read in books. The evil King who usurped the throne killed everyone who was a threat to him, real or imagined. In this case, Queen Persephone would be the hero who saves the day.
She had not been lying to her sister. Hebe knew they weren’t living in a story. But it was like a story in some ways. Stories were based on reality, even though they were figments of the authors’ imaginations. Parts of them were true and could teach valuable lessons to their readers. Perhaps Marietta should start reading fiction instead of nonfiction. At least she agreed that they should carry on with their lives like they normally did.
As for telling their father about the Queen, Hebe sighed. “You’re right, Marietta. He needs to know. We will tell him as soon as he gets home. This secret is too big for us. He will not do anything that will hurt Queen Persephone. Maybe he can help her get her throne back when she comes out of hiding.”
Her eyes widened. “Perhaps he already knows and he is helping her with her plans. He wouldn’t tell us because that knowledge would put us in danger.” Their father cared cared deeply for his family and would always keep them from harm.

A wave of exhaustion hit Marietta like a wave, washing over her. Today had been too much. Crowds outside of Senate, a public tiff between Elias and the Antonis sisters, and her sister informing her the Queen was alive. This was too much emotion, and far too serious, then a sheltered noble was used to. No amount of playing her harp or painting would rid her of the emotion that she felt today. What she needed was to… be by herself.
Perhaps he already knows and he’s helping her with her plans. He wouldn’t tell us because that knowledge would put us in danger. Maybe. Marietta had no way of knowing. Though if she figured out her father was doing that… Marietta wouldn’t know what to feel. The rational part of her would understand, knowing that it’s her father who makes the decisions for the family and that he would do that to protect them. The other, childish part of her would have felt hurt being kept in the dark with something so significant.
Though Marietta had no right to feel that way, for she didn’t have the intention to tell Evi nor Sanasa about this. Even their mother Marietta wouldn’t confide in. Only her father should know, he was the only one she could trust to make the right decision. He was the one who could keep Hebe and the rest of their family safe and set things right again. Marietta had full faith in him.
“Maybe.” Marietta said quietly, so obviously tired. She ran a hand through her hair. She needed a bath. She needed to be in warm, comfortable clothes and wrap herself in a blanket and try to forget this awful day happened. But what’s more, she needed to know that at least for today, Hebe was safe.
Marietta won’t be able to sleep any longer knowing her baby sister was away at the castle. Marietta, who was afraid of everything, wished she could swap positions. She’d rather be Emilia’s handmaiden, knowing the secrets of the still alive Queen and realizing the horrors that Elias is capable of. If it meant Hebe was at home, Marietta would switch positions in a heartbeat.
But that was not possible. While Marietta was a dreamer, trying to see a beautiful world instead of the dark, grim landscape that was before them, she was not so much so that it left her oblivious. It was time to face realities. For now, things would continue as is.
“Well, you’re here now, aren’t you? Stay the night at the very least. You don’t know what things will be like after the senate is adjourned. People might be… on edge.” Which for Athenia anymore is rather normal. All it needed was a tiny spark and the whole capital would light aflame. “I’m going to ask the servants to warm water so I can bathe. I’ll ask that for you too.”
Marietta placed a kiss on top of her sister’s head, smoothing down her hair. “You know I love you, Hebe, don’t you? I only worry so much because I care. And I know you’re not a child anymore, you’ve proven that to me. But I will always worry because I’ll always love you.” With that, Marietta took a step back. “I’ll go talk to the servants now.”
With that, Marietta left. There was far too much on her mind. And until more is known… there was nothing that the sisters could do.
