Nikolias always loved when the grandchildren visited. It was one of the few times when he could really be himself (at least mostly) and he took every opportunity to spend time with his family whenever possible. Occasionally, family time might even be a worthy excuse for staying away from court entirely, and he welcomed it and praised the gods when it happened. Constantly having to pretend to understand signals from others, plus pandering to those who might have influence over his rank wore him out.
The weather was nice today. He blessed Apollo for sending his sunshine, both literally and figuratively, on his life.
He had some reservations, as usual, about his daughter living where she did. She was probably well aware, too. Though he knew the Eliades family lived in Colchis as a matter of course, his stomach quivered lately when he thought about it. Possible war with Egypt was nothing to joke about, and he was uncomfortable with his grandsons being anywhere near it right now, much less in the military capital of Greece! He prayed Marisa and her husband would be extra watchful.
But enough of all that, at least for now. He would have plenty of time to worry over it when they weren't with him, gods knew. He might ask Marisa if they couldn't move somewhere else, at least temporarily, if things got bad, but things weren't bad yet. Still, he often worried over his family. With Nikos feeling cheated of the crown and still seemingly determined to do something about it, was it any wonder?
"Please, if it should come to war, don't let it ruin my legacy." He wasn't even sure which god he was calling to at the moment as he waited outside for his family to arrive. Maybe he was calling to them all; today it was hard to tell.
Enough worries. He would be cheerful when his family came, because he knew they probably disliked to see him sad, especially the twins. And he wouldn't have ruined their visit for anything in the world.

If Babis had to choose, he would prefer to spend his summers in Taengea if every day was as nice as this… though the young lad was hardly referring to the weather. “Aras! Run!” Babis called over his shoulder as he began to fly through the halls of the manor, laughing like a maniac all the while as the Eliades boys ran away from the scene of their last crime. The poor servant carrying a pile of sheets hadn’t even seen the pranksters hiding in opposite doorways with a thin rope stretched between them. All it took was a moment to tighten the rope and a misplaced step from the servant to send the boys into fits of cackling laughter before they bolted down the halls
In truth, for the boys, visiting Taengea was akin to opening up a whole new playground. No one here was aware of the twins' reputation for causing trouble thanks to their infrequent visits. This trip had been spurned by his mother, Marisa of Condos, as she had been feeling homesick and decided that in the lull of the early days of Teleos that she was not necessarily needed in Colchis for the time being. So, on a whim, she had decided to pack up her boys and head home to Taengea for a few weeks in order to enjoy the near perfect weather she missed so dearly in the dry, Colchian heat. Babis, of course, did not complain as he was always on board for an adventure, but truthfully he could live without the horrid boat ride. Although, the seas had not been rough, being cooped up on a little ship for a week was hardly a highlight to the lad. Luckily, though it had passed and now the twins had free reign over the Archontiko Condos.
And the household was ill-prepared for the chaos that would rain down upon it like the Eliades twins.
For the past few days, the boys had done nothing, but run wild and pull as many pranks as they could think up. Thus far everyone had turned a blind eye to their wild ways. (Though whether their antics were blamed on their childish ways or a lack of discipline from their mother… there were plenty of rumors surrounding that topic.) Either way, Babis himself didn’t care much for it as he was having a grand old time and practically no one was going to tell him to sit down and behave. It didn’t work in Colchis, so it sure as hell wasn’t going to work in Taengea.
This was why the twins felt brazen enough to do such an act, knowing full well that that stout lady would probably give chase for them ruining several hours of her work. (Did it really matter though if it was all in good fun?) Being faster on his feet than his little brother, Babis lead the way through the unfamiliar halls in search of a hiding spot. He made sure that the slower Aras was still keeping pace though as every now and then he glanced over his shoulder to make sure that poor Aras hadn’t been left behind.
“Come on Aras, you’ve got to move faster than that!” Babis shouted back to his identical counterpart as he turned a corner… and ran straight into the twins’ grandfather, Nikolias of Condos.
Reeling back, Babis looked up at the man in shock for a moment, completely taken aback that he had just run into. It only took a moment before he was able to come to his senses, regain his balance, and say sheepishly, “Hi Grandpa.” Growing nervous that somehow Nikolias knew the trouble that the boys had just gotten up to, he glanced warily back around the corner to see how far away Aras was as he nervously stuttered out, “Aras and I was just -- uhh… errmm…”
Luckily at that moment, Aras turned the corner and Babis flashed an expression at him that clearly conveyed the situation at hand. After all, even though the boys had already gotten into mountains of trouble at the Condos manor, none of it had been in front of their grandfather and Babis was nervous as to how the older man would react.
“Help me get us out of this one!” Babis wordlessly screamed at his brother using only his expression, hoping to the gods that their shared connection would help Aras get the message quickly.

Taengea was fast growing to be one of Aras’s favourite places in the small world he currently knew. There was nothing wrong with Colchis, per se, but it seemed as though the twins’ antics had run their course there and, with the pair of them now older, people were starting to grow tired of them and often refused to acknowledge their pranks as they once had. And, as everyone knew, there was nothing fun about a prank if you couldn’t get a proper reaction out of it. That was partly the reason why this new territory was so exciting to the pair of them. Unknown as they were, there was no end to the confused and annoyed expressions left on people’s faces once they had experienced the Eliades twins for the first time, and a few had even chuckled alongside them, something which would have genuinely shocked them to see in Colchis. The people of Taengea just seemed more entertaining and more light-hearted, and Aras could not deny that he liked the place more than he had expected to after the nightmarish boat journey it had taken to get here. He was unsure he had ever thrown up so much before in his life.
On this particular day, with the sun shining so bright in the sky, it might have come as a shock that the young boys were not frolicking in the gardens, but it would come as no surprise to hear that they were up to their usual tricks again, and Aras found himself racing down a hallway as he had done on so many other occasions. The only difference was the halls of the Archontiko Condos were not as familiar to the boys as that of their family home in Colchis, and escapes became twice as hard when you did not quite know where you were going. It was for that reason why, as Aras rounded another corner, he did not expect himself to come face to face with his maternal grandfather and, by the look on his brother’s face, neither had Babis.
"Grandfather!" he burst out, more formal than he had intended it. Mother had called it a tick - Aras seemed to resort to formalities whenever he found himself nervous. Glancing momentarily from the older man to his brother, he caught that expression to which he was so accustomed, and the look on his own face turned twice as abashed, cheeks lighting up red. What was he to say? The truth was not precisely something which would work in this situation, and neither boy could be entirely just yet as to what Grandpa Nikolias’s view of pranks was just yet. He seemed sterner than their other grandfather, but that was the extent of what Aras really knew of the man, and he supposed if the truth was negative, he did not quite want to know more.
Still, he brought his hands together at his waist and attempted a smile, attempting to look as innocent as he could. ”Babis and I…we were just exploring.” It was a pathetic opening to his excuse, and Aras knew he could do better, if only he had known the man better. It was difficult to formulate a lie of much use when you didn’t know your audience all that well, though there was some truth in his words. They had been exploring, technically, although exploring their limits when it came to practical jokes would have been a more accurate description than exploring their surroundings and temporary home. His next words bore the same similar half-truth, eyes wide and lip quivering as though in fear of the situation in which they found themselves. ”But…but it wasn’t our fault! We ran into one of the servants, and we knocked her over, and she was so angry! We tried to say something but she just chased after us, and I swear we didn’t mean to run into you either!”

Though he had in general been a child too serious for his own good due to his upbringing, Nikolias wasn't totally immune to the joys of being a prankster. Having no siblings, sometimes there was little else that was amusing to occupy one's time. And gods knew he had needed amusement, if only to breathe properly after trying so hard to be a perfectionist for his parents' sake. As such, he knew better than to scold the twins right away. Better to befriend them and possibly get them to admit any mischief than to scare them away and never have them want to visit him again .
"As for you running into me, I quite enjoy that part of it. It's been far too quiet around here without you two." He chuckled.
That was just another reason he wished they didn't live in Colchis. He couldn't visit as often as he liked, and sometimes not at all due to court responsibilities. But considering his other concerns, that was something to talk over with Marisa and her husband. Hopefully, the sooner the better.
"By the way, why are you not outside? It's a perfect day for a nature walk." He loved taking them on nature walks, and besides, maybe it would burn off some of their seemingly boundless energy. No more servants need be upset today.
If he were to automatically expect that they would go for this proposal, he knew he would likely be fighting a losing battle, however, so he shrugged good-naturedly.
"But you don't have to go if you don't want to . Say, you wouldn't happen to have any interesting tricks up your sleeves, would you? If someone ever runs out of ideas, I do know a few."
One of his favorite memories involved his grandmother visiting, her freshly made bed, a heavy rain, and the resulting army of frogs....

Babis was surprised at first that their grandfather seemed to easily accept the boys’ misdeeds were just little more than harmless fun, causing him to breathe a sigh of relief at this. For the moment, he was glad to know that they weren’t going to be scolded right away for tripping the servant and ruining all of her hard work. He shot his brother a simple look that conveyed the message, “Wow, that was a close one.”
Having been set at ease, Babis didn’t feel as guarded when his grandfather spoke again, completely unaware that this was the trap that the older man was setting with his calm demeanor to have them later admit where they had been wrong. The younger boy simply nodded at the statement that Nikolias had missed the twins being around the Taengean household. He glanced over at Aras, hoping his brother would step up to the plate and say something nicely worded in response that Babis could jump in on rather than have the twin struggle to come up with something to say as well. Babis had never been the one who was skilled with words after all and he really couldn’t even remember the last time he had been here in the Condos manor, having been too little previously.
Babis knew that his grandfather didn’t like it that the boys were so far away from him. He had overheard the father-daughter pair discussing it the other night when he had snuck out of his room and unfortunately Babis had to disagree. As nice as Taengea was, Colchis was his home. He was used to the rocky outcrops and windy paths perfect for running. He didn’t want to move away from his home kingdom. Especially not when it means he’d probably have to leave Grandma Ria, Grandpa Harith, Uncle Mikael, and Aunt Felia behind. Not to mention all of his friends. He didn’t know anyone here outside of this manor.
Plus it didn’t hurt that Aras was meant to be the heir to the Eliades family. It would be improper to pull him out of the country he would partially be expected to lead someday. If Grandpa Nik could convince any of the twin’s paternal family, the Kotas would stop them and they couldn’t disobey the king.
So, no. The twins would not be moving to Taengea soon, unfortunately.
Neither was Babis particularly thrilled by the prospect of a walk through nature. Normally, if he had Vang with him, he might be okay with him if the boy could head off on his own. He liked to explore and head off the beaten path at his own rushed pace. He doubted that Grandpa Nik would let him do that. He didn’t say anything though, glancing over at his brother to see what he thought of the situation. Hopefully, Aras was okay with being the mouthpiece for the twins and the one who made decisions for them this time.
However, at the mention of pranks, Babis perked up a bit and took back his position as the leader asking his grandfather with an eager expression clearly painted on his face, “What do you mean?” It was his way of asking for the man to elaborate which he hoped he would. Babis was always ready to hear new ideas…
And just like that, the trap for the boys was set. Now it was only a matter of Nikolias springing it when they least expected it.
