Desma ushered Pia to a small alcove as the party of courtiers made headway to the royal extravaganza. "A moment of your time Lady Olympia if you will." She only referred to the woman in such a way when they were in front of company that required it.
As they headed to the small cul de sac jutting off of the main thoroughfare she looked to Pia with a worry in her eyes. "Sit, you must sit. Sit and hold your head high, never let it drop." She said as she glanced back with a weary gaze.
Once Pia was settled, and indeed she hoped she was comfortable she bent down and pulled out the sandals that were surely more comfortable than what the Old Cheese had insisted she wear. "Now do not let the seed within your eg-" She began nearly unable to contain herself as that purple dress reminded her all the more of a vegetable. She took a breathe and started over again, "Do not let the seed within you spoil your mood or that which I am fixing to tell you sweet girl. For your head must remain high, and you must walk out of all this fuss with the utmost grace, unlike someone no doubt..."
She continued to fumble about with the sandals muttering. Obviously there was something upsetting her, and where had she disappeared off to? Had Pia even noticed what with everything that was expected of her? Surely it was just to get the sandals? Wait no that was the first time...then what about the second time? No no surely she had been Pia's shadow all the while yes?...No.

Pia didn’t hesitate as Desma pulled her aside, spying the more comfortable shoes in her hand and following eagerly. A group of guards kept watch but allowed the women their privacy, with most of the kingdom still in the Arcus there was little threat outside at the moment so they allowed her brief departure. Sitting as directed, Olympia lifted one swollen foot with a bit of a groan, relieved that her old maid knew exactly what she needed at all times.
”Thank you Desma. I don’t know how I’d manage without you.”
Smiling fondly as her old nursemaid knelt to help her with her shoes, the warm expression faltered into a slight frown at her words. What on earth did she have to say that was making her otherwise stoic Desma hesitate so? Usually when she had something to say, offensive or not, the woman spat it out with no sense of shame or impropriety. The longer it took for her to say the more nervous she grew.
She held her head high as instructed, trying to look as regal as she could for those who might catch a glimpse of her. Whatever it was couldn’t be as bad as what she had feared would occur in the Arcus today. No one had died save those who deserved it.
”First Stephanos making me anxious before the ceremony with his talk of if we were to be assassinated, now you. What is it, what’s wrong?”

Desma began to remove the torture devices from Pia's feet and replace them with the more comfortable shoes. As the woman insisted she speak she relinquished a bit of a sigh. She looked up at Pia, in all honesty it was a look of pity.
"When we were in your room getting you read for the-- Anyway, I saw an item fly out of-- the king's bedroom, it had a bit of a shimmer to it so I thought to investigate in your best interest...My dear, I believe he has not held to Hera's oath." She reached into her pocket as she finished changing out the sandals. In her hand she held a shiny broach that was definitely not Pia's. "Why would he dispose of his mother's jewelry? Better yet." She pulled out several other items of beauty, "Why would he keep them as souvenirs.
She glanced up and over her shoulder. Their time was beginning to wane. She looked back to Pia, "My lips can do quite little dear Pia, but my eye and ears are ever at your service. Be vigilant at the function to follow, and remember...don't let this get the best of you, instead let them see the best of you and..." Her lips curled into a smirk. "Get even."
Desma was the sort to believe one should take an eye for an eye, and anyone messing with her dear Pia was bound to end up blind. "I told you in private to keep your baby, you, and your image safe. Chin up sweet girl, chin up." She grasped Pia's hands and gave them a reassuring squeeze.

Olympia frowned as she watched Desma remove her shoes, one hand gripping the edge of the seat where she had settled and the other moving over her stomach. Whatever it was that the slave had to spit out the way the woman was looking at her told her it had to be bad. Desma’s expression was one she’d seen before, had even given it on occasion. Shaking her head slowly, Pia didn’t want to hear it though she’d demanded to be told.
Reeling back from the items Desma pulled from her pocket as if they could sting her, the queen shook her head more vigorously as she tried to deny what she saw before her. This wasn’t happening. They had been doing so well, the time in the temple in the forest he had been so doting and kind, still wanted her even in her current state. She was not yet so heavy that he couldn’t spend every night with her if he desired so why would he do this. It had always been clear that she was not the only one, but in her foolish way she had hoped that he would not continue his behaviors once they had married, wouldn’t make a fool of the one he’d wed over the others. He might not have loved her but she had at least hoped he’d respected her enough to avoid this.
”No. Why would...no.”
Pia turned back to stare at those who were walking past from the Arcus, still part of the royal party though she couldn’t find Stephanos in the crowd. Had she really expected him to be a loyal husband? She supposed not. But she had hoped for some discretion. Not something that the servants would talk about or that might spread to the common people. Her position was already tenuous as it was, if it became known he was seeking attention elsewhere and had grown tired of her bed what reason did he have to keep her and their child. She may have been his wife but he was the king. He could put her aside as easily as he had taken her.
”Say nothing. Tell no one. It’s between us for now.” She turned back to Desma as the woman squeezed her hands, clutching at her for a moment before taking a deep breath and standing once more. This could not shake her. Not when she had to stand before the entire court. She would not be made a fool before everyone, and to achieve that she would need to avoid her husband for the time being.
It stung, after their sweet time in the woods she had thought perhaps he did care. Clearly she had been just as fooled as the rest of them.
