Nikos thought she was giving in. He thought she was seeing things his way again. He had her in the sand, had her beneath him. The taste of her lips, the feel of her body against his. It all brought back memories that he hadn’t realized he’d missed so very much. This was it. She would be his. She was changing her mind and she would be his. He would make it so.
Nikos of Condos was wrong. On all counts.
Her teeth sank into his lower lip, and not in a good way. The coppery taste of blood filled his mouth. Nikos started to pull back with a muttering curse, but just as he did, her fist connected with his jaw and her nails dug into the other side of his face. He screamed out, from pain and shock, defensively scrambling back and holding his hands up to ward her off. ”Hey! Stop! Damn it, Evie!” He rolled away from her, his clothes getting covered in the damp sand. Their horses nearby, snorting and neighing at the sudden commotion.
Never before had Evie reacted so violently to his touch. As Nikos fended off her claws, he realized that he’d gone too far. Realized that he’d gone about this all wrong. But in that moment, he also wasn’t sure what he could have done differently. He also had the desperate thought that if she ran from him in this state, she could get hurt… or run off to her uncle or Gavriil or her father, she could tell them that he tried to force himself on her. That hadn’t really been his intentions. But the way she was reacting, he wasn’t sure she knew that. He had to calm her down again. ”Evangelina! Stop! He made a grab for her hands, her wrists, her forearms, anything to stop the assault she was hitting him with. ”I’m sorry! I didn’t mean… just calm down!”

She felt the shift in him, the coppery taste of blood and for a moment she wasn’t sure if it was his or if it was hers. After that moment, it didn’t matter. Her chance to get him off of her, away from her was presented and she had to take it. He screamed out from the pain or maybe from the shock but she was too focused on removing the skin off his face. How dare he touch her! How dare he? Her mind was jumbled and racing like a wildfire on the dry plains burning and scorching every sane thought that entered her mind.
In that moment did she have a doubt about how far he’d have taken that? None. She’d felt it in the desperation of his touch the way he was forcing her to relieve what could have been something wonderful between them.
‘Hey! Stop! Damn it, Evie!’
Evangelina heard everything, registered his words but something dark had turned in her and all she wanted in that moment was to inflict pain on him. She wanted him to feel helpless and just as cheap as he’d just made her feel. She wanted to rob him of whatever dignity he had and make him scream and beg to just get away from her. She wanted all of those things, and by the power of the Gods she’d have it.
You didn’t pick a fight with a Leventi.
He’d rolled away from her as quickly as he could disentangle himself from her, but it didn’t slow her down. She was kicking at him and beating his arms that were up defensively to protect himself from her fists. How dare he ruin something for her… Why couldn’t he just have left them as something that could have been?! She was snatching at the fabric of his clothes and trying to shake him.
“Gods damn you! Why did you have to take away that too…” Her ramblings didn’t make very much sense, at least not outloud, they did when combined with the rush of emotions and the flood of thoughts in her mind.
‘Evangelina! Stop!’ His hands reached out to grab her, any part of her that he could get a hold of to slow her beating down. It made things worse, she tried to jerk free. Arms, legs, teeth they were all working like some sort of feral street cat who’d been picked up against their will. She didn’t want to be touched. ‘I’m sorry! I didn’t mean...just calm down!’
She growled at him jerked against him again, “Don’t fucking touch me…” She pressed her lips together and angrily glowered at him, sitting upright and erect. Every bone in her body rigid and prepared to start flaying him alive again. “Get you hands off me, Condos.” Her chestnut hair was sticking every direction and the kohl that had lined her eyes was smudged. She looked like what had almost happened to her, had happened to her.
Instead of fear flickering in her dark eyes, anger… a fury that even Zeus would have raised an eyebrow glared back at him. “Get you fucking hands off of me before I remove them...” Her teeth gnashed each word without though. Maybe it was an idly threat… then again maybe it wasn’t. Large things could be done when you were so hyped up on adrenaline as she was at that very moment. Her lips curled, “Did you have to ruin that too?”

They were once again sitting up in the sand. Well, Nikos was on his knees in an effort to brace himself against her beating and physically restrain her clawing hands. But she was evading or escaping every grip he could manage. Scrapy. There was no other word for it. ’Don’t fucking touch me…’ ”Stop hitting me then!” Finally, he managed a tentative hold on her elbows. ’Get your hands off me, Condos.’ The look in her eyes made his next words die in his throat before the thought was fully formed. She had the wrath of the gods in those eyes as she glared daggers into him. ’Get your fucking hands off of me before I remove them…’ Nikos let her go, no hesitation, and held his hands up in surrender. He had never seen her so angry. Not even on that day all those years ago. But now that infamous Leventi anger was coming through. Shit he’d really fucked up just now. ”I’m sorry… Evie.” ’Did you have to ruin that too?” He frowned, that crease between his eyes forming again. ”What? I wasn’t trying to ruin anything, except maybe your intentions to marry Dimitrou.” Talking hurt. Flexing his jaw, Nikos sat back on his haunches, dropping one hand to the sand, and bringing his other to his busted lip and clawed face. His fingers came back red from both places. ”Damn, woman, I’m glad you know how to fight a man off, but did you have to make me bleed?” He sighed tiredly, defeatedly. He looked back at her. His Evie. ”Please understand that… that wasn’t my intention, Evangelina. I just… I wanted to… to change your mind from this course of action you have chosen. My words were not getting through; I had to try something.” he paused, scooping up a bit of sand with his blood soaked fingers and using it to dry the crimson liquid from his hand. ”What do you think I ruined, Evie?” If he had stopped to really think, he would have realized to what she’d been referring, but his mind was still reeling from all that had happened in that few minutes. Her news, the pain it brought to him, the desperation. Tasting her again. Her attacking him. Her rage even now as she glared at him.

Her news, the pain it brought to him, the desperation. Tasting her again. Her attacking him. Her rage even now as she glared at him.
Her lips curled into a snarl again as he ordered her to stop hitting him. He wanted her to stop hitting him… Fine, she was a lady like that… She’d stop. Instead of raking her claws at him, or pummeling him with her fist the pint-sized hellcat aimed a nasty mule kick at him. Her ankle bent so that her toes were up and she was using the base of her bare, pointy heel to take out her inner rage on him. How she’d lost one of her sandals she wasn’t entirely certain… she also was pretty sure she didn’t really care at that very moment.
He let go, holding his hands up in surrender and she quickly recoiled away from him. Her dark, smudged eyes narrowly glaring at him. ‘I’m sorry… Evie.’ Her lips pressed tighter together. He didn’t have any right to call her that now. She was so angry and humiliated and something burned deep in her soul over this. He’d hurt some part of her that she’d never even realized was capable of being hurt. The fact was she’d been pretty certain that he’d broken all of her at one time… that he’d reached in and shattered her soul but right then it was perfectly clear that wasn’t the truth because he’d just managed to find some untouched part of her and hurt that part of her.
Did he even know what he was apologizing for? Of course not. Some new inner demon growled inside of her at that. What good was his apology if he didn’t even know what he was apologizing for?
‘What? I wasn’t trying to ruin anything, except maybe you intentions to marry Dimitrou.’ Anger flashed a warning in her gaze at him. He had absolutely no right to utter Gavriil’s name and it was a perfect way to ignite her fury again at him if he continued down that path. There wasn’t any mercy in her gaze as he felt up all the places he was dripping blood from, ‘Damn, woman, I’m glad you know how to fight a man off, but did you have to make me bleed?’ Okay, so maybe she felt a momentary twinge and almost smiled bitingly at him. That was still something more then trying to rip the skin off of his face. Her hands wrapped around her knees as she sat away from him and stared at the sea. ‘Please understand that… that wasn’t my intention, Evangelina. I just… I wanted to… to change your mind from this course of action you have chosen. My words were not getting through; I had to try something.’
Evangelina’s jaw clenched and she refused to look over at him. How had she let him hurt her again? How? She was more angry about that then the way he’d gone about it and she was furious at being manhandled.
‘What do you think I ruined, Evie?’ Sucking in a ragged breath, she could feel her body tremble just slightly. Gods she wasn’t going to show him any fear. She’d cut herself limb from limb detaching every piece of that that dared betray her before he knew how scared she’d been. She didn’t answer didn’t come immediately as she shifted around the violent thoughts and need for quiet and space to find an answer for him.
“Us.” It was a single word but stilted and tight, it’d taken everything for her to say the word without a tremor in her voice. After a moment, “You ruined, Us.” Swallowing back the bile that had risen in her throat her voice became stronger, more confident in her tone. “You tainted our memories.” Turning to look at him, her gaze bore into him, “Do you think I’ll ever remember the sweetness of your kiss? Or the tender way your hands would stroke up my arm while we daydreamed? Do you think I’ll remember what it felt like to be in love with you?” Her eyebrows pinched together and her face contorted in pain, “You ruined… Us.”

That kick had nearly connected with a certain part of Nik’s anatomy that would have left him laid out in the sand close to tears. As it was, he was able to maneuver fast enough that her heel somehow connected with his lower ribs rather than his groin. He could already feel a bruise forming.
Blood, bruises. Don’t mess with a Leventi. Lesson learned.
’You ruined, Us.’
The lord’s shoulders slumped at those words. Us. He didn’t realize she’d still thought of them and an ‘us’. As her words bored into him, telling him of his failure, how he ruined everything they once had, how she might have still felt about him. Fuck. May Zeus strike him down now. He hadn’t meant for any of this to happen. ”That was not my intentions.” He started to reach a hand out to her, but thought better of it and withdrew again. ”I was trying to fix us. Just like I’d tried to fix things before. To reconcile my… transgressions.” He shook his head, diverting his gaze from her and out towards the vast sea before them. He’d tried then, days after she’d ran out on him. He’d tried to see her, to write to her. But she’d never responded. He’d been told she had no desire to see him. After a few weeks of being turned away, Nikos had let it drop. And when Evangelina had finally emerged back into the public eye, she’d had nothing but venom for him.
How had things progressed so very far from where they’d begun?
Nikos noticed a mass of dark clouds moving in from the horizon. Was that a storm headed their way? If so it looked as if it could reach the shores of Taengea by mid-day perhaps. He watched those clouds a moment more, thinking they matched the tumulus feelings swirling in his chest quite nicely. He didn’t look at her as he spoke again, ”I really am sorry, Evangelina. I did not intend harm on you. That is never my intention where you are concerned, but it seems to be what I am best at doing.” He took a breath, and swallowed past the lump in his throat.
Evangelina Leventi made him lose his head more often than not it seemed. Nikos had no idea why that was. Her spark had amused him when she was a child. That fire had drawn him to her as a girl on the brink of womanhood. Her passion had kept him interested. Her friendship had been cherished.
His fear – a fear that he was unwilling to even admit to himself – had shattered what could have been.
He wanted to say more. To tell her he would not give up this time, not until vows were exchanged. But he wasn’t sure how to put those thoughts into the proper words. He grew silent instead, watching the storm clouds in the distance.

He slumped at her words like a whipped puppy. How had he not seen that? How had he not seen that there would always be an ‘Us’ where they had been concerned? He’d been her first love. Her first almost. Her first everything. Her first heartbreak. And now, she dropped her gaze to the sand. Now anytime she thought about one of those memories, she was going to remember this. She was going to remember the feel of his palm digging into her waist. She was going to remember the shock of fear that had shot through her when his mouth tried to bend her will. She was going to remember the way her heart jumped into her throat when she couldn’t find a way to get free. She was going to remember the weight of his body pressing her deeply into the sand and the moments she was about to cry out for help only to have her mouth invaded by his tongue. His hands entangled in her hair and forced his presence onto her. Anything that had been good about them, anything she remembered with fondness was now going to be tainted with these other memories.
‘That was not my intentions.’ Somehow that didn’t fix things. Her head turned a little and her eyes darted sideways towards him and the way his hand flexed as if he was about to reach out and touch her again. ‘I was trying to fix us. Just like I’d tried to fix things before. To reconcile my… transgressions.’ It didn’t register immediately what he’d said and if she’d not already been so tightly wound up and in defense mode she might have questioned him more about what he’d meant about ‘just like he’d tried to fix things before.’ Instead, she was much more focused on breathing in and breathing out and remembering to breathe in again.
Silence passed between them for what felt like several long minutes. Her gaze had settled back upon the sea and the dark, ominous clouds that graced the horizon. They’d have rain by this time in the morning. She was fairly certain of it. But it’d be later in the day maybe even evening… it was sometimes hard to tell when looking at the sea and the horizon. How far was everything really from where she was.
‘I really am sorry, Evangelina. I did not intend harm on you. That was never my intention where you are concerned, but it seems to be what I am best at doing.’
She tilted her head and focused her dark eyes on him again, her lips pressed together for a moment then closed her eyes and snorted giving a small shake of her head before looking away again. “Yeah, well… I’m getting pretty good at putting myself back together again.” She picked up a small piece of driftwood half hidden by the sand and showed it to him. Broke it in half and tossed it down towards his feet in two different pieces. “Tell that piece of driftwood that we are sorry for breaking it in half… did it fix it?” She knew the answer. Giving him another look, she simply shook her head and stood to her feet. “Go home and wash the blood away, Condos. At least you got to hear it from me that I am getting married.” She made her way slowly towards the grey stallion munching on the briny seaside grass and gathered up her reins.
Pausing she glanced over her shoulder at him, “You’re like a cat, Nikos. You’ll land on your feet again.” With that, she turned and stepped easily up into the stirrup and swung her leg over Altair. “Get some honey on those cuts… don’t want you getting an infection.” She knew exactly where she was headed and it wasn't home. There was a small stream that was shortly past Gavriil's manor, she wanted to clean herself up and get organized. She wasn't wasting another day without telling Gavriil she was in love with him.

Evie’s words dug into him like a knife. She should have had to put herself back together. He should have listened to his father and steered clear of the Leventi girl. He tore his gaze from the storm clouds and looked down to the sands, to the broken piece of driftwood she’d thrown at his feet. He reached for a piece of it and rolled it around in his hands. He didn’t answer her question. There was nothing he could have said in defense of it. There had been a time when he could smooth over just about anything with her. But Evangelina Leventi seemed to be immune to his charms now. How had things gotten so far out of hand? He asked himself again.
’Go home and wash the blood away, Condos. At least you got to hear it from me that I am getting married.’
Home. Arete was at home. Or if she was at the market, she’d be back soon enough. How was he to explain the condition of his face, the bruise on his ribs? Retta had a tendency to get insanely jealous at times, and he did not wish for his lover’s wrath to be unleashed on Evie. He would have to come up with something. Evie getting married to another… that still stung like a poisoned dagger. This had to be a ruse. She was going to change her mind. Nikos would be there when she did. Even if she no longer cared for him, he would still be there for her.
’You’re like a cat, Nikos. You’ll land on your feet again.’
Finally, Nikos was able to turn to look at her, standing there with the reins in her hands. A wistful smile on his lips. She knew him so well. ”I always do…” He pushed himself up from the sands, gaining his feet, and gingerly touching the scratches on his cheek again. ’Get some honey on those cuts… don’t want you getting an infection.’ His blue eyes searched her face. She wouldn’t have said that if she did not care for him even a little bit. There had to still be a shred of hope.
Until vows are exchanged… ”I still believe you are making a mistake, Lady Evangelina. Know that I will be there when you change you mind.” He started for his own steed. ”Until then, allow me to provide the wine for the festivities. It’s… the least I can do after…” he let his voice trail off unable to bring himself to speak allowed what he’d done to her this day.
Gripping Frixos’ reins in his hand, Nikos watched Evangelina ride away. She would be going to Gavriil he was sure. Would she tell him what he’d done? Would Gavriil be set on war? It’s what Nikos would do in the other lord’s position. Nikos swung himself up into the saddle once Evie was a good distance away. Keeping his eyes on her retreating form, Nikos steered Frixos in the direction of the Condos Manor. ”This isn’t over, my dear Evie.” he spoke allowed, though she was nearly out of sight and would not hear him.
