It would be a year to the day in Posidaios since Celine's family had survived the house fire. The fire had occurred just before her eleventh birthday, which was later that month. Celine couldn't believe how much her life had changed in just ten months. And she had known Max and Adelpha for only 2 months, but she was going to try her hardest to make new friends, because she was aware that she had to make a life for herself here, even if it might be only a shadow of her old one.She was scared, but she was pretty sure two months was long enough for her to decide if she wanted to be friends with someone, even if she hadn't told them all of her life story yet. Now, she thought she might be able to trust them with it.
In a way, she had already let Max and Adelpha in more than most people outside her family in her whole life. She had become more fearful of touch in the last ten months. Maybe it was knowing she'd have to give up all her old relationships, though she hadn't known then that Basil, one of her Taengean friends, would be so close by. Or maybe her fear of touch had come when Rhais' burns on the now-deaf side of her face were just beginning to heal, as they still were. After all. she didn't like the thought of hurting her sister.
Whatever had caused her fear of touch, though, trying to remember customs on the day she had let Max kiss her hand had somehow made her try to forget the fear. And maybe when his lips had touched her hand, it had given her energy too. just like he'd said it had done for him.
It still didn't mean they knew everything, though. Basil knew more, but now that she was friends with Max and Adelpha, they needed to know about how the fire might have happened, too.
And if they still stayed friends with her after that- because being seen with her might bring them danger, too- she would be forever grateful to the gods. She was scared, but she was ready for some beauty to come out of her ashes. The phoenix birds rose from the ashes. She only hoped her spirit could and would do the same.
One of the areas outside where they might sometimes meet to play games was pretty today, and she enjoyed being out in nature, which soothed her spirit more than anything else- unless there was a thunderstorm, of course. She could have asked them to meet her at her house, or at one of theirs, but somehow that wasn't private enough. She wanted to tell them her story, without her parents or siblings butting in, or Max and Adelpha's parents hearing and not wanting them to be her friends anymore. If they chose to not be her friend after today because they might be scared, that was fine, but she wanted them to choose for themselves. She took a shaky breath as she waited, even her throat feeling tense.
How they reacted might determine whether her life here was going to be a happy one or not. She would have to stay no matter what happened, as her old physician had said the hot springs in Colchis might be good for her lungs. But she wanted more than just the health of her body to improve here.
Having friends might help her soul to heal, too.

Adelpha got the message from Celine easily enough. It wasn't usual that they were far from where either of their parents were, so of course that made her worry. Not so much out of fear for what could happen, but moreso if it meant that they were in some sort of trouble.
Like herself, Celine didn't really fit in with everybody. More than likely it was because of her appearance and health. Yet in Adelpha's case, it was due to her being the quiet sort. She wasn't entirely shy, she just didn't really feel the need to be chatty with everyone. Sometimes it was better to observe than to participate.
Heading out to find Celine, Adelpha clutched onto a small bundle in her hands. She hoped that the tiny shells that she strung onto a string would bring ner new friend some joy. Adelpha thought they were pretty, especially when they were together. So she wanted to share that.
Finding Celine, her brows furrowed with concern as the girl seemed worried or nervous. "Hi Celine. I brought you something. Are you okay?" She held out the small bundle as she approached. "No one hurt you, did they?"

Celine took the shells gratefully. It gave her hands something to do. "Thank you, they're so pretty. Well... no," she admitted to Adelpha's question. "But...um... they could. That's sort of why I needed to see you and Max- to tell you why-" She gulped. "Why my family moved here. Maybe, since we've known each other two months now, you might know a little. We did move here because of my health. And because of a house fire. Almost equally for both reasons, but the fire more." It might not make sense to Adelpha that the fire was the main reason they were here, because Celine had visited the springs a couple of times already. But it was true.
"I didn't want to tell you both in front of your parents. They might decide it's not a good thing for us to be friends. So I asked you both to come here, and if one or both of you decide you don't want to be my friend anymore, it's okay." Well, not okay. Celine was nervous enough already without thinking of facing a new life- and access to a new court- alone without friends. But there was always a chance, if only a small one, that she could make friends in court, and maybe some of them would get the idea of dangerous politics better than these two. But royals seemed to like to stick to their own kind.
"What I mean is," Celine fingered a particularly intricate and detailed little shell, though she could barely see it for the way unwanted tears blurred her vision. "I would almost expect you not to be my friends anymore. Being seen with me might hurt you too. My father's fellow ambassadors may hold a grudge against him for something. That's what we think, anyway. And if not- who knows? For all I know, we could have enemies here." She shivered in spite of the warm spring weather.
Truth be told, they could have political enemies- or at least those who didn't like her father's policies- in any court they visited.
"They- everyone- said it was a summer storm. We did have a huge downpour. Thunder and lightning and all. And it damaged several houses. And lightning can cause fire. But I don't know. All I know is Rhais got hurt- now she doesn't hear in one ear- and our house burned down, and it might be because of something no one wants to admit!" It made her angry and scared all at once.

Adelpha couldn't help but fidget some as Celine spoke. It wasn't that she was bored or anything, yet she easily caught onto her friend's nervous energy. It was hard not to. One could see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice.
"I don't understand. Why would my parents not want me to be your friend?" She stepped forward a little more, growing even more concerned than before. Was Celine a bad person? It didn't really seem like it. She was too sweet. Yet Celine revealed more, however cryptic, about what she was afraid of. Adelpha just had to giggle. "No one's going to hurt us. That's silly, Celine. And besides, my Father would stop them. He's a great soldier, you know. He won't let anything happen." That was her belief anyways.
"Why would someone burn your house down? It makes no sense." Politics was something that she knew nothing about. Her studies were on far more simpler things that fit her status of being in the lower class.

Maybe Celine shouldn't have expected Adelpha to understand. She was willing to admit that that was her own fault. After all, how much did kids- even older ones like them- understand about politics in the first place?
"Not even I know all the reasons why." Celine admitted. "I just know people will sometimes do awful things when they hate something- or someone who had anything to do with what it is they don't like. But I don't think you would think it was silly if it was your house- you might be scared, too. And my father isn't a soldier- not like yours."
Still, for all that she could admit Adelpha seemed to be trying to make her feel better, Celine's face tingled and stung with shame, her voice soft with it.
Why did she ever bother trying to make herself heard? Not even her siblings always understood her (though they would about this). And maybe young people who were royals understood a little more about politics, but a lot of those young people would probably rather talk to a wall than to a middle class citizen like Celine of Acaris. In that way, Celine was used to usually being alone.
She sighed and tried to smile. At least Adelpha seemed to care, even if Celine couldn't quite shake the feeling that Adelpha didn't really understand how afraid she was. Then again, maybe Adelpha felt safe with a father who was a soldier.
Celine didn't have that comfort. But she couldn't be mad at Adelpha because Adelpha did. Celine was hurt and confused- she couldn't help it- but she wasn't angry.
"People might have tried to follow us here to Colchis. We don't know- but they could have. Or they could still be looking for us. But if you think your father can stop them, it might help me not to worry so much," she admitted, trying to smile bravely.
Except at night. Nothing ever stopped the nightmares. But even stopping a little of the worry would help.
She only hoped Max wouldn't laugh at her too. Somehow, that might make Celine feel even worse than Adelpha laughing did.
Celine had let Max hold her hand. Gods only knew why it still meant so much- but it had. Custom before a contest or not, letting him kiss her hand had somehow meant she'd given him a piece of herself. If he laughed at her, it might hurt forever.

"Huh?" Adelpha stared at Celine as she didn't quite understand what she had meant. "I meant that it was silly to think that anyone would come after me to hurt your parents. I'm not anybody. I don't come from any noble house. If I was killed on the street no one would bat an eye." Only her parents would be saddened by it, especially as she was an only child.
She lightly shrugged her shoulders. "I heard my parents arguing again. My Father wants me to be a soldier too. But so many die in battle. I'm sure that's what he expects of me too. It'll be the only prospect for me; to be sent away to go and die to bring honour to the family. That makes me want to stay young forever."
Of course even that was silly to think about. No one stays young forever. Yet she was determined to follow in her Mother's footsteps and create works of art. If only she had a brother. Her life would be so much easier!
"My Father will help keep you all safe. That's his job. Especially as we aren't at war right now. I'll tell him about your plight, okay? Maybe he'll have extra soldiers around to stop any bad guys from trying anything." She furrowed her brows as she looked to her. "Does that help?"

"They could still come after any of you to get to me, if we are seen together," explained Celine, but she did see how Adelpha could have misinterpreted what she had said. "For that matter, I'm not sure I'm any safer in court just because the king's guards usually happen to be there. But there, I try not to worry. There might be something to be said for the phrase 'political asylum.'" Not that her family had really known exactly what caused the accident, but just the very thought of some sort of grudge between Celine's father and another of any Master Informer's employees was enough to make them think carefully.
She understood that Adelpha wanted to stay young, though probably for a different reason. She missed being young, too. All this fear and possible political danger made her wish she'd been born to another family sometimes.
"Sometimes I wish I were in a different family. I love my family, but it's hard not to wish my father weren't in politics. Maybe I could feel younger, too."
But deep inside, she knew she'd lost something of herself on the day the fire changed her life. It wasn't that Celine had ever been naive. but she wished she knew less. A lot less!
Adelpha offering to tell her father about Celine's problem made her feel better, though. Maybe there was no shame in being vulnerable.
Maybe being vulnerable had nothing to do with how strong a person was or wasn't.
Maybe she'd be more relaxed here in Colchis now, sooner rather than later, though she still felt as though she might have to be careful, at least for awhile.
Celine nodded. "That would help a lot. Thank you." She managed a smile even if it was still a bit shaky. But at least she knew now that there was no need for embarrassment. And if Adelpha could be this nice, maybe Max would still be her friend, too.Basil, she knew, was her friend anyway- they had known each other from a young age, and he understood her fears because his father had the same job as hers did.

Adelpha snorted. "No one would come after me, Celine, even if it was some silly attempt to get to you. I'm a nobody and it's not like we are together all the time or anything. Only sometimes, when you aren't in court or at home." Or anywhere else. It seemed as though their friendship was more of a secret than anything else. Why would a noble even consider a friendship with a lowly commoner anyways? Such a thing was generally frowned upon.
She giggled a little at the thought of Celine at times wishing that she had been born into some other family. Politics were nothing that Adelpha had any knowledge of, other than the fact that some enjoyed it while others didn't. As far as she could tell, it was made up of either parties or arguments, the latter of which tended to mean war. It was nothing that she had wanted to be a part of. Not even the parties. She wasn't shy, it was moreso that she didn't see the point in it all. "I think that everyone wishes to have been born into a different life from time to time. I do too." That was true, yet she refrained from letting it be known of just what life she'd rather have. She was fond of having her own secrets. There was less for people to make fun of or to exploit or even to take away.
As Celine seemed somewhat relieved, Adelpha put on a reassuring smile. "And not to worry. If I see anyone being mean to you, why I'll introduce them to my fists. Just because you have to act all polite and proper, it doesn't mean that I have to. And they'll never see it coming..." Her father taught her how to punch and where and she used those skills whenever the situation called for it.

Celine was by no means a noble- though she might have been considered to be upper middle class thanks to her father's salary. However, even though being a noble might in fact mean more threats to one's life instead of less, for now it seemed to be safer, so she couldn't really blame Adelpha for assuming it. She often wondered if others she knew assumed the same thing since her family had court access.
Between Adelpha and Max, she had little doubt that she might be fine, but even so, they were all only just kids at this point. It would be a blessing from the gods to have an adult- or more than one- on her family's side. The fact that Adelpha's father had a job like he did meant that she felt somewhat safer than she had before, and she was glad she'd told Adelpha as much as she could. It might not stop the nightmares entirely, but it was something she now had to be grateful for.
She couldn't help a grin at imagining Adelpha punching someone out, though she wondered just how big of a person Adelpha could handle at their ages.
"Thank you," she said simply. "I- I have nightmares about it. About everything- how horrible the fire was, how my sister was hurt so badly, the possibility of anyone in my family being kidnapped- maybe even held for ransom." She shivered, suddenly more than a little cold. She wondered for a moment if everyone occasionally had this type of fear, as a what-if if not an actual possibility. In a weird way, she almost hoped it was true.
"Do youever think about things like that?" she suddenly asked, her voice very soft as though she feared she might cry.
