While Eris plucked the strings of chaos around Evangelina’s party tonight, she felt a calmness settle over her as her party seemed to go up in ruins. Dafni hadn’t done what Evangelina had expected, rather than dropping the tincture in the drinks of others, the silly girl had drunk it. Then Melina was shouting at her like some sort of irate old harpy. That cousin was starting to remind her of a governess she’d had once… And then there was the incident with the sea lion now unfolding in front of her like some sort of mythical tale.
‘We are not shaving off her eyebrows, Evie! I still have to live with her!’ Evangelina had tuned Melina out mostly, as she nodded back at the striking blonde in turquoise with a smile of greeting and watched her proceed towards her other cousin. ‘And you knew perfectly well what Dafni would do when you offered her the vial! Don’t think me an id- Where did she go?’ Glancing sideways at Melina, she raised an eyebrow and waved her hand off in the last direction she’d seen Dafni headed while Melina was in harpy mode. Really, you would think with Agape for a sister that Melina and the other Leventi girls surrounding Melina all of her life, she would have gotten used to the silly sorts of antics. This wasn’t the first time something like this happened and it’d most certainly not be the last.
‘Dorothea! Can you he-’ Melina’s words played in the background of her mind as she searched for the sound of the barking and stared as the blubberous beast bounced his way towards their Queen and Xene, barking and cooing some sort of love song in serenade that was sure to wine the Queen over to him. That was the moment things seemed to slow down to the slowest speed ever in her mind. Oh, this is bad. This is very bad.
Of all that were within grabbing distance, Dorothea seemed the most logical choice to find aid in herding the sea lion back to the waters. Melina was terrified of horses, her herding skills were not to be trusted. Dafni while in a sober state might have been an aid, considering the amounts of opium she’d just self medicated with… it was perhaps not the best idea either. Xene and Theodora were quite obviously the objects of fascination with the creature.
Having noticed her newest admirer headed her way, she couldn’t have blamed Theodora for dumping to her feet. Wine splattered across the sand and the servant behind Theo dropped his fan and took off. Well, that’s the last time I charter servants from them… While that thought crossed her mind, she found herself already moving forward towards the group without really any plan. Melina rushed past her and before Evangelina could pull her back was flinging her glass recklessly at the beast.
A wailing cry came out of the beast as the wine hit his eyes but he shook it off and started tearing through the party, crashing into tables and sending people jumping backwards out the way. Dorothea next to her seemed to spring to mind the quickest… probably the lack of opium in her system. ‘Quick. Let’s try and frighten it back into the sea. Evie, gather whoever you can and arm them with sticks, alight with fire. They’ll help to push it back. Melina, fetch me as much wine as you can and meet me by the fire.’
As Dorothea took off for Evangelina didn’t know, she started moving herself… right along behind the bouncing beast as he crashed through her party. She was trying to right the mess and push sticks into peoples hands to light with fire.... “Come on, Beasty, back to the sea with you.” She swatted him on the backside hoping it’d get him to turn a little. It was then that she saw her youngest cousin, the petite delicate blonde, Imma running towards him.
“Imma. No.” Evangelina shrieked, turning her attention from the sea lion to her cousin but it was too late as Imma threw herself in front of the sea lion. ‘He’s nice!’ The high pitched desperation in Imma’s voice indicating the lack of rational thoughts in her mind. ‘He just wants to have fun with us!’ Reaching out she very nearly snatched Imma by the dress and growled a little, Dorothea should be just about ready to start shooting arrows and Imma wanted to play patty cakes with the sea lion.
The sea lion was nibbling dangerously close to her cousins ears and neck. She made another grab for Imma, “Yes, darling. I know you’ve made a friend but…” Her words cut off as she failed to grab Imma again. She didn’t want to make any sudden movements too soon or else beasty might take off Imma’s head, there was at least seven hundred pounds of blubber there that could decide to not be nice at any moment. “I’m sure it’s just Poseidon and you’ve captivated him.” She ground her teeth together, snatching at Imma was not working, time to change tactics. “I promise we won’t hurt him it’s too bad there isn’t someone here who could draw him at the party and paint a picture of him later for me… it’s such a… surprising guest. It’d be too much to ask of you, I’m sure… right?”

Chaos compounded on more chaos as Melina suddenly threw a glass of wine at the sea lion, the alcohol splashing the animal in the eyes and causing it to go mad. Destruction floundered in its wake as it veered off the path from her and Xene and took off through the camp, bringing down one of the tents in its fury before Dorothea formulated a plan to herd it back into the water. Thank the gods there was at least one woman with a little sense here tonight; clearly no one else knew what to do.
Flaming arrows were sent after the creature, Dorothea instructing Evangelina to arm the rest of them. This plan seemed sensible to her, like it might work… that was, until her intoxicated little sister decided the big blubbery creature was suddenly her newest friend.
“Imma!” she shrieked in concern and frustration alike, running her hands over her face in exasperation. “Get away from that thing! He is not your friend!” When it started nibbling the girl’s golden hair, Theodora thought her heart might stop—blanching at the sight. “Everyone stop with the fire right now!” she shouted, waving her hands as she got close to the sea lion again. She knew Dorothea had a good eye, but with her sister so close, it was a chance she’d rather not take.
Evangelina was attempting to sway Imma away from the creature, clearly hesitant to get too close. Theodora, too, did not wish to antagonize it further; with Imma so close, she didn’t want to risk the little idiot getting hurt. While normally she adored her youngest sibling for the precious thing she was, in that moment, she was ready to kill her. What was she thinking?!
The sea lion was now snuffling through her sister’s blonde locks, getting closer as if trying to determine whether this human would make him a better mate or not. Pulling at her cheeks in annoyance, she yelled at Imma, “Do you want to be that thing’s new wife, you twit?!” While Evangelina might be taking a gentler approach with the youngest Leventi, Theodora went down the opposite path. Though she was glad to be out of the creature’s attentions, that didn’t mean she wanted her sister to be its new paramour, and if she needed to give her a reality check to make sure that didn’t happen…
“Do you really want to give your chastity to a sea lion?!” she growled, cheeks flushing. Gods, this was so absurd. “I don’t think you’re going to find a human husband that way! Think of the scandal, Imma!”

As Imma accepted Arete’s offer of a drink and the young woman indulged in her own glass of the spiked drink. From the first swallow, the stress she was feeling over possibly being found out as a party crasher was alleviated in a moment. A wonderful calm feeling settled in its place, allowing her own heartbeat to grow as gentle as the waves flowing in and onto the beach. All thoughts of meeting up with Eleni and ensuring that she had a good time after her troubles with Silanos practically melted away as she plopped down into the sand next to Imma and found a new sense of joy just staring at the waves lapped up on the shore. It was beautiful in a way that Arete couldn’t even begin to describe. The bright blues faded into orange and white flickers as torchlight and moonlight flickered off of it in turn. It was beautiful. It was magnificent… It was the first time that Arete had properly seen the ocean.
It was as if her eyes were opened for the first time as she gasped in awe as a larger wave crashed upon the beach, leaving behind a crashing noise that sounded as if the nereids themselves were singing to them. “It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” Arete uselessly echoed back to the noblewoman beside her. The need to continue any sort of conversation fell to the wayside as the two of them just enjoyed the beauty of the night. Arete certainly could not speak for Imma, but it certainly felt like that any utterance would ruin the pristine nature of the atmosphere surrounding them. After all, this beauty had to be a gift from the gods and it would be wrong for them to ruin what was given to them in such a wondrous form.
If the young woman who would have otherwise not have ever been close enough to Imma besides these circumstances thought that she was experiencing divinity in this moment… well she just about had the shock of her life when a sea lion appeared out of the waves and began to clamber up the beach towards the other party goers. While the younger girl next to her began to giggle, thinking that this was a friend coming to join in the festivities, Arete saw this as an entirely different thing. This was not just some sea creature wanting to join in the fun and drink wine like the rest of them. This was a god. It had to be didn’t it? After all, they had already given them the perfect waves and beautiful night filled with twinkling stars. Surely, they would want to see their gifts for themselves?
“It’s Poseidon!” Arete gasped in wonder as she watched it draw closer to the other girls. If her legs did not feel like jelly, she would have scrambled to her feet to rever their godly visitor as he should be, but she was rooted to the spot in sheer shock that they were witnessing divinity at work. “Oh gods, we’re going to be blessed!” Her words were the excited screeches of a girl who had no real grasp of the situation at hand. That was probably why Arete couldn’t understand why everyone else seemed to be so scared near the tents. She could see several girls run away from the god of the seas which caused Arete’s brows to furrow in confusion. Why were they insulting the god by refusing his presence?
As the fiery arrows began to soar through the air, Arete and Imma both managed to find their footing in order to make their ways up the beach. However, Arete had drunk more of the mystery drink meaning that she was not nearly as coordinated as the other girl, forcing her to trail behind. By the time Retta was able to join the crowd that had gathered around the sea lion, poor Imma was already getting her hair munched on by the god, forcing Arete to laugh. “He likes you!” She giggled as she watched two other girls, one being the so-called Queen which was funny as that was the title that Olivia of Condos should have at the moment, move forward to tear Imma away from the King of the Ocean. Arete frowned at this. First they flee from his presence, now they take away his new friend? Did they seriously want to get them all cursed?
Not understanding that this was not a god nor was he looking for friends, Arete was quick to call out, surely bringing some sort of attention to herself in the process, “What are you doing! That’s Poseidon! Leave them be!” Arete wanted to walk forward and help them, but her limbs felt funny. As if they were all connected to strings that she couldn’t control. Was she a little puppet now? Nikos’s little puppet… what a lovely thing. Either way, she could not intervene herself, but she still laughed at the suggestions that Theodora seemed to be making for Imma. Giving up her chastity? Becoming Poseidon’s new bride? Oh, so he was here in search of a wife then? How lovely. Arete loved weddings. They were always so beautiful and somehow brought tears to her eyes. Imma would be so pretty as a bride, her golden hair would look so lovely with a crown of flowers in it and oh how lovely would her dark eyes stand out against the white marriage robes. Even though Arete felt a sliver of worry for Poseidon’s previous wife, (Aphrodite? Was that her name?) she knew that mere mortals like them couldn’t deny a god what he wanted. If he wanted to make a bride of Imma, then so be it.
Looking around, Arete knew that one of the most important things about a marriage was the white robes that the happy couple wore to the temple of Hymen. They couldn’t even think of bringing the happy couple there before dressing them in the traditional way, could they now? However, glancing around Arete was quick to notice that nobody had white robes. Everything was dark as the night or light like the colors of spring. Nothing white… except for what the servants were wearing. Wrapped around their waists, showing off bare and muscled chests for all the female attendees to see was a thin fabric of white. Ah yes, that would do.
With everyone being so focused on Evie, Theo, and Imma combined with the fact that Arete was practically a ghost at this festivities thanks to her status as just a mere mistress and not a noblewoman; no one seemed to take notice of her moving towards the back of the crowd where a few poor and hapless servants stood, palm leaves in hand and unsure of what to do. Arete scowled at this. Didn’t they know that they had a wedding to prepare for? Rolling her eyes at their stupidity, the young woman grabbed onto the fabric at their waist and yanked as she shouted about why she needed what was protecting their modesty this evening. “Poseidon wants to marry her! They need to be dressed in white!” She giggled as the knots at their hips came loose and suddenly the two men were bare for all to see. In her addled state, Arete instinctively bit her lip at the sight, completely unaware of how embarrassing and terrible this must be for the poor servants. Nikos wasn’t around, what he didn’t know wouldn’t kill him right and they were so big…
No.
There was a wedding to be planned. Shaking these naughty thoughts out of her head, Arete made her way back through the crowd, unaware that the two servants were following her, trying to grab back their loincloths with one hand and cover themselves with the other. Pushing past the other nobles, Arete tried to approach Imma as she shouted, “Look! Look! I have your robes! You and Poseidon can now go to the temple!”

Was it alright to accept an invitation from someone who had been invited? Truthfully, Sara was not sure of the answer -- and its lack was what had kept her from showing up right away. The brunette had helped Xanthippe get Melina ready, but she had not revealed that she’d been invited by her cousin. She’d wrestled with it in her head all day before finally deciding that she would show up on the beaches and if she was asked to leave, then she would.
Events like this were all that she could look forward to now that attending court, beyond the scope of her duties to Lady Melina, was firmly out of her grasp. It was not hard for her to make her way there, rather it had been her lack of proper attire which had been the better cause for delay. She’d had to make do with what she had, which was admittedly rather poor. Her mask did not match her dress, and she felt a little chagrin at being so concerned with it. She wasn’t even sure if she’d be allowed to stay.
The wind ruffled her hair as she walked from the place where she had been left, her sandals in hand as she traversed the shifting sands. It was a beautiful night, perfect for a party. Sara was admittedly a little nervous, hoping that Imma would not be too difficult to find. She could see the inviting glow of the tents, but the sounds coming from the other end of the beach were less than...pleasant. Sara hurried then, her gait hindered by the sand as it moved underfoot and she had to mind her step or else she would be eating it.
Her brows rose first in surprise, the furrowed in alarm at the scene unfolding just beyond the tents -- closer to the edge of the water. Fire and yelling, a giant sea lion, naked men chasing a woman with white robes flying behind her like a flag. The fifteen year old blinked, taking it all in -- looking up at the heavens before casting her gaze back down. What in Hades was going on here? She thought, wondering if Xanthippe had slipped something into her last drink. She wouldn’t put it past the beautiful blonde. She had it out for Sara.
But alas, the sights before her were quite real and not the product of delusions. Sara dropped her shoes, hurrying forward and trying quite hard to avoid looking at the naked servants -- and get to the center of what was happening. When she realized it was Imma standing perilously close to the heavyweight sea lion, she looked to the woman beside her. It looked like they’d tried to fend it off, but something had stopped them. Or someone, perhaps?
”Uhm...what is happening?” She asked, her young face obscured by the thin, plain mask that she wore. ”That’s Imma isn’t it? Why is she just standing there?” She wanted to go forward, to grab her friend by the wrist and haul her away -- but what about the sea lion? It could be dangerous.

As the sea lion nibbled on Imma’s hair, his long whiskers tickled her neck. It was a pleasant feeling and she couldn’t understand why everybody looked so horrified. He wasn’t going to harm them. He just wanted to join the party. At least nobody was shooting fire at him anymore. “I will protect you,” she whispered to him. “Nobody is going to hurt you.” She heard Theo yell for the fire to stop. At least her sister had sense.
Or did she? Both she and Evie shouted at her, telling her that the sea lion was not her friend. Evie tried to grab her, but she quickly stepped aside. Her head spun a bit, but she ignored it, grinning at her cousin when she claimed that the creature was Poseidon. The woman she had been drinking with agreed. The pieces all fell in place. The god of the sea had taken the form of sea lion so that he could bless them. She turned to look at him. The lock of hair he was munching was now over her front shoulder.
Imma gasped when she saw the halo of gold around him. He was glowing. Couldn’t the others see it? And his face! A flash of handsome human features appeared upon it and smiled at her. She had come to his rescue and he was going to reward her for it. Her! No longer would her sisters overshadow her. She had the favor of Poseidon. Staring at him with an expression of rapture, the young blonde didn’t hear Evie ask her to paint him, but she did hear Theo asking if she wanted to marry a sea lion and give her chastity to it.
Of course she did. Who would turn down the chance to marry a god? Because she had protected him, he wanted her to become his wife and rule under the waves with him. She would turn into a mermaid and be able to breathe underwater. They would live together in his palace under the sea and she would be his queen. Imma would miss her family, but she would be able to visit them whenever she wanted foe she would charm him into loving her and he would deny her nothing. As soon as she swam to land, her beautiful fish tail would turn into legs again.
Only the unfamiliar woman beside her seemed to understand what was really going on. She said that Poseidon liked her and demanded that her sisters and cousins leave her alone. Who was she and why was she glowing too? Of course! She was one of Poseidon’s attendants and had left the sea early to prepare the way for him. That must be why she looked a bit wobbly; she was having trouble getting accustomed to having legs.
The woman ran off and Imma continued to stare adoringly at Poseidon. She tuned out everything else until his attendant came rushing back with white robes for the bride and groom, followed by two of his male servants. They must have just emerged from the water and had not had time to find clothes to wear. Blushing as she noticed their naughty bits jiggling as they ran, the youngest Leventi quickly averted her gaze back to Poseidon. “You need to turn into a human now. Only then will everyone believe who you really are.”
Taking one of the cloths, she wrapped it around her shoulders. She heard Sara ask what was going on, and she glanced over at her best friend. “This is Poseidon and he wants to marry me! I’m going to be the Queen of the sea! Come join us, Sara, and be my maid of honor!”
Imma could hardly believe that Poseidon had chosen her out of all the beautiful women at the party. She was special after all and everyone would envy her, even Nana. They would ...
Wait a minute.
When he had first come ashore, Poseidon had headed toward Theo. Imma narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “You chose my sister first, didn’t you?”
The sea lion, being a sea lion, bobbed his head up and down.
Interpreting that typical gesture as a ‘yes,’ Imma yanked her hair away from him. “How dare you!” she shouted, advancing toward Poseidon. Startled, the poor sea lion backed toward the water. “You chose my sister, not me! You only decided to marry me because she rejected you!” She continued to stalk toward the creature, and it kept waddling backwards, most likely frightened by her shrieking. “I don’t care if you’re a god! You have no right to treat me like this!”
Tears began to stream from her eyes. “You played me for a fool and I hate you! I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!” Losing her balance, Imma fell to the sand on her backside. “I am not a consolation prize! I am not second best! I am worth just as much as my sisters! I am a Leventi and I deserve to be treated like ...” Overwhelmed by anguish and inferiority, the petite blonde dissolved into a fit of uncontrollable weeping.

If words could express everything that Princess Xene felt in the moments leading up to this very... strange exchange between Imma and the sea lion... they couldn't. At first she tried to keep Theo from running into danger as chaos started to descend upon the party. Her gaze was wide and she followed the queen step for step, utterly speechless about what was going on. This was utterly nonsensical in the worst of ways, and for once in her life, the princess was actually speechless, only able to watch as the other ladies worked at trying to get Lady Imma away from the large creature.
It would not be a good thing in the sea lion suddenly crushed the young lady, but that was as far as Xene could think, standing at Theodora's back with an absolutely perplexed expression on her face. The fact that the creature had stormed its way through their party was already bad, but this was worse. Her mind was running, trying to figure out what she might be able to do to halt the situation before it got too much further into dangerous territory.
Things quickly ventured south, however, with Lady Imma starting to scream at the sea lion that quickly started to back away from her shrieking. This was where the princess started to shift forward, knowing that lions were brave. And she was a lion, through and through. If she got hurt, there would be little issue, because at least the queen was safe, as well as her young sister. "Excuse me," she whispered to the queen as she stepped slowly past her, dogging the same steps as Lady Imma.
The girl took two forward, and so did Xene, shedding her golden mask so that she could see easier in the darkness. She was cautious, knowing that the other ladies had stayed back for fear of what could happen with the large, formerly angry creature. Xene didn't look back at any of the other ladies, her entire focus on the sea lion and the young lady who now sat on her butt in the sand. That would make things more difficult, but with the sea lion backing away, that gave the princess more of an opening.
Crouching with an elegant grace, in a single fluid motion, behind Lady Imma, the princess slowly brought one arm up under Imma's arms, murmuring softly into her hair. "Come, Lady Imma," she said gently, "You are right. Poseidon does not truly care for you, but we do," she said softly, "Let him be. Leave him to return to his sea and you to return to the arms of your family. There will be other, more formidable matches for you. I promise," she said softly, slowly trying to work Lady Imma back to her feet.
"Come away," she added gently, "Let us return to your sister and find you food and water. That would do, wouldn't it? You can weep into my shoulder, but first lets return to the festivities," Xene continued to coax, her gaze on the sea lion that seemed to be hesitating at the shore about whether to stay or go. Xene held her other hand out at the other ladies, imploring them, silently, to remain where they were.
"Do you wish to walk with me, my lady?" Xene questioned very softly.

Gods, what was happening now?! Some mad girl she didn’t recognize was going on about the sea lion being Poseidon, that he had chosen Imma for his bride. Theodora blinked a few times in rapid succession. Was she serious? What exactly had these drinks been spiked with? For a moment, she wondered if her own wine had been part of that, and if this was all some insane dream. But no, no this was all very real, and somehow she seemed to be one of the only sober women among a sea of intoxicated fools.
Okay, perhaps they were not really fools, but really, could this have spun any further out of control? Glancing toward Evangelina, she met the woman’s eyes for an instant—the queen’s face drawn in frustration and concern alike. Were Leventi marriages just cursed? If this was the party before it, what was Evie’s actual wedding going to be like?
White robes were snatched from the poor servants, the same unfamiliar woman bringing them over to Imma and the sea lion while leaving the men suddenly bare. “What in Tartarus do you think you’re doing?!” she yelled at the strange brunette, ready to snatch the woman’s hair from her skull along with her own. “That’s not Poseidon! Imma’s not marrying it!”
In her inebriation, Imma seemed perfectly content to go along with all of it, practically in raptures as she spoke to the animal at her side. The queen’s nails dug into her palms as she looked on, helpless to do aught to help her sister without putting her further in danger. Clearly, the youngest Leventi had no problem ignoring her, insisting she was going to be the bride of Poseidon and that Sara would be her maid of honor. Lovely. Celebrating one upcoming wedding only to be subjected to yet another entirely.
Wait, Sara was here? A moment’s glance was spared for her young sister-in-law, looking as lost and perplexed as a woman could look. No time for greetings now though, not with the worry for her sister overshadowing all else.
Suddenly, though, Imma’s demeanor changed, shouting that the sea lion had chosen Theo first, and she wouldn’t be his second choice. Startled at the girl’s yelling, the animal started backing off, Imma dissolving into hysterics and collapsing in the sand as she sobbed barely intelligible words of her own value.
About to go forward to fetch her now that the sea lion was retreating back toward the ocean, Xene ushered her back and did so instead. Theodora’s heart was in her throat as she watched the princess attempt to coax her sister away from the lapping waves. Her gaze flicked between the two humans and the sea lion that suddenly seemed curious again, hesitating at the shore as if deciding whether he ought to leave, after all.
“Oh, fuck this,” she muttered under her breath, marching forward to join Xene and Imma. No more gentle coaxing or sweet reassurances. She would drag her sister by the hair if she had to, at this point. They were getting her away from that beast before it changed its mind.
“All right, darling, up we go,” she said firmly as she grabbed Imma’s other arm and hauled upward, keeping a wary eye on the nearby creature. “You are most certainly not a consolation prize, and we’re going to find you a nice human man who will appreciate you instead, hm? Come on, sitting here in the wet sand’s not going to fix anything, up, up.” Hopefully, her strength combined with Xene’s would be enough to get Imma on her feet and away from the ocean before all this somehow got worse.

Gods this was a disaster, Dorothea thought to herself. At least Evie would always have an interesting story to tell about this day. She wondered how much of it the woman would tell her father. Dorothea banished that thought from her brain quickly, not really wanting to think about any private conversations that the two might have. That was far more than she wanted to know. Why did he have to pick a woman to marry that was younger than his own children? What could Gavriil possibly been thinking? If he knew of this night, what would he have thought? This hardly seemed like the behavior he would expect from a wife. Then again, they weren’t married yet.
Not that Dorothea would do anything to prevent that. It was her father’s life to live, as much as she might object to some parts of it. She had no power in making decisions for him, though he certainly had the power to make decisions for her. It wasn’t entirely fair, but that was the way, she supposed. She wondered if he would have a hard time distinguishing how to treat his wife compared to his daughters.
All of these thoughts went through her mind as she continued to assess the situation. Her flaming arrows had some potential, then young Imma had run off next to the creature and appeared to think it was a friend. Or worse, some type of lover. Dorothea lowered her bow, unwilling to take a shot with the girl so close. Although it wasn’t her intention to hit the sea lion and certainly not Imma, she was not willing to risk the young Leventi’s unpredictable behavior. Although, she certainly seemed fine, just standing there, letting the beast chew on her hair.
Dorothea glanced about, looking for Melina, hoping that her friend was safe in all this. Tonight had turned out much differently than she was sure they had all planned and quite frankly Dorothea looked forward to going home and climbing into bed. She wanted to do that sooner than later. There was nothing worth staying around for after this.
Of course, she couldn’t leave until this situation was taken care of and could only hope that the others could draw the girl away and Dorothea could go back to shooting enough flaming arrows to send the beast back into the water. That was about the best she could hope for so far. Until then, she was going to wait and watch, along with everyone else.

Okay, so the mountains of Meganea were looking pretty damned good right about now. Imma wasn’t listening to a word she was saying and the gentle approach she’d been trying to use on her cousin seemed to be failing miserably. Theodora’s less than gentle approach didn’t seem to be having any better results. And when one of the party goers started blabbering that it was the great God of the Sea, she almost lost it. Her fists balled up and she had to check herself to keep from rounding on the woman and telling her she was not helping.
Her toes flexed into the sand and she glanced around looking for her other cousins and Gavriil’s daughter. Gods almighty, all she’d wanted was a nice relaxed evening for them to enjoy themselves. She wanted a bit of fun and fire and sand, was that too much to ask? Flicking a cursory glance at Melina, Dafni, and Dorothea she looked back and met Theo’s frustrated look with one of her own.
‘Uhm… what is happening?’ There was a soft voice that seemed to have arrived just a little late to the party. Closing her eyes, she felt her nerves unraveling one by one. ‘That’s Imma isn’t it? Why is she just standing there?’ Evangelina glanced over at the girl and offered her a disapproving frown, what was a point of masks if anonymity was being ruined. It was beside the point that Imma had made enough of a spectacle of herself to unmask herself to all of the party goers.
‘This is Poseidon and he wants to marry me! I’m going to be the Queen of the sea! Come join us, Sara, and be my maid of honor!’ Her head snapped back around as she gaped at her youngest cousin and glowered at Imma. She was most certainly not marrying a sea lion. But the glower began to fade as the wheels began to turn in Imma’s head and Evangelina noticed the way her happiness seemed to slip away and was replaced with suspicion. Evangelina wasn’t exactly sure what was running through her cousin’s head at that moment but…
‘You chose my sister first, didn’t you?’ Evangelina stilled, realization dawning on her face. It wasn’t something that any of the Leventi girls ever talked about… Not out loud, and especially not to one another. Living among the shadows of possibly the most beautiful women in all of the known worlds took its toll on those who were not so blatantly blessed.
She took a hesitant half-step towards Imma and was about to reach out for her again as her young cousin yanked her hair away from the sea lion. Pursing her lips, she’d been about to pull Imma close to her in a hug, but the usually demure artist snapped and started shouting at the sea lion. ‘How dare you!’ Her mouth opened to tell her no, but what was the bother… Imma wasn’t listening to her anyway. ‘You chose my sister, not me! You only decided to marry me because she rejected you!’ Wide dark eyes, stared for a moment as Imma was angry stalking towards the sea lion and for perhaps Poseidon was looking down upon them as he called the sea lion back away from her young cousin as she continued to rant, until she was crashing to the sand and Evangelina took another step that direction but saw Xene had moved in and she said a silent ‘thanks’ to the woman.
‘Oh, fuck this.’
Her head turned slightly to see Theo pass her and go to meet with Xene and Imma. She hung back, not because she wasn’t worried about Imma but rather… This seemed like it was a moment best left to the sisters and Xene was there to work as a mediator if they needed it. She watched them for a long moment and then slowly turned around to look at what was left of her party. This suddenly seemed like the last place she wanted to be. What had begun with good intentions had exposed her cousin’s greatest weakness… It’d left her feeling like her family was tattered and bruised.
She didn’t want to play at being hostess any more. Blinking she looked over the faces of her guests and thought about dismissing them but, the food and drinks were already paid for… if they wished to enjoy themselves she wasn’t about to stop them. Clearing her throat, her gaze dropped and she started walking towards Lady Dorothea and Melina, but didn’t stop until she was walking past them and closed her eyes. She wanted to just sit on a quiet dune and stare at the night sky at this point.

Melina was used to being the cause of such a mess. The fact that she wasn’t was a shock to her. Being on the sidelines as fire arrows flew through the air, Imma fell in love with a sea lion, and then had an (extremely relatable, at least to Melina) meltdown in front of the crowd was… a novel experience, to say the least. Melina almost entirely forgotten about her sister, though she was relieved Dafni wasn’t the center of this mess.
Melina didn’t know what to do. Any help she would provide would surely make matters worse. She tried with the wine, and that had only served to agitate the sea lion further. It was better for her to watch the chaos from a safe distance. As long as she wasn’t involved, then the situation wouldn’t hit rock bottom. It would just be… very, very close to it.
Evie started walking towards Melina and Dorothea. She didn’t stop as Melina expected. She kept walking past the to ladies, away from the party… her party. Melina frowned. This was an absolute disaster, and while Melina was relieved, she had nothing to do with it… Evie must be crushed. This was supposed to be all about her. Instead, Imma and Theo took the spotlight, and a random sea lion ruined everything.
If Melina were in this position, she wouldn’t think much of it. Melina was cursed, and this situation would be par for the course. But Evie was not Melina. She was beautiful, she was confident, she was sassy, and deserved the world. This was incredibly unfair to her. She had probably looked forward to this and now…
Well, maybe Melina could try to salvage something. If she wasn’t going to get involved with the mess that was Theo, Imma, and the sea lion, she could at least try to cheer up her favorite cousin. And what was a better way to do that than alcohol? It would rid her of her negative emotions and hopefully allow her some peace. Or- she’ll just get fucked up and wake up the next morning having no idea what happened the day before and be better off for it.
“C’mon, help me,” Melina said to Dorothea. Her friend was much better at the talking thing than Melina was. Melina would likely second guess everything and end up staring at Evie like some open-mouthed fish. Melina was sure that after today her cousin was over marine life. Melina certainly would be.
She grabbed an amphora of wine and some mugs and chased after her cousin. “Evie!” She called out to her. “Wait! I came all this way for you. You’re not about to leave sober, are you? That isn’t the Leventi way! People are going to start confusing you with me! What next, you start bringing books to parties?” Melina handed her cousin a mug and filled it to the top before doing the same for herself and Dorothea.
Melina wasn’t certainly one to get drunk at parties, nor was she really the type to go to them, but if there was one thing Melina was good at, it was being with her family when they truly needed it. “Cheers, Evie.”

With Theodora dealing with her sister now, Xene took her chance to step back. Her gaze trailed along every person at this party that had fallen into extreme shambles. Then her gaze found the rest of the party itself, all of the tents, comfortable seating, even the servants had run off, too cowardly to deal with a sea lion and more than willing to allow a group of young ladies to deal with it.
Off with their heads, all of them. Honestly. What useless men had been hired for this event.
People seemed willing to go back to drinking and having fun with Queen Theodora dealing with her sister, but it was the calling of Melina that caught her attention. Evie was walking away from her party, and the princess couldn't help but letting a deep frown grace her lips. No. That wasn't good.
And suddenly she really looked at the remains of the party, feeling absolutely terrible that everything had gone in this direction. Nothing had gone right in these last few months, but it felt like this should have been the one thing to bring just a bit of normalcy to girls who didn't know what else they were do to. Most of the men were at war, and those who weren't were extremely busy with fortifying the city against any threat that might head their way if Taengea were to fail.
This had been Evie's special night. Likely the only one she would have despite Gavriil's age. Frowning, the princess started after Evie, her gaze on the woman's back. Admittedly, Melina truly annoyed her with her need to be loud and overly drunk at the worst of times. With her mask in hand, she marched after Evie, shooting a harsh glare at Melina that conveyed more annoyance than anything at all. "Be. Quiet," Xene said quietly in Melina's direction, starting into a bit of a half-run.
"Evie!" Xene called after her, finally catching up and reaching for her hand. "Do you mind if I join you?" she asked softly, hoping the warmth of her skin was soothing. "I'll come and sit with you. Wherever you want," she added gently, wanting to give the woman comfort for so many things that had been entirely out of her control tonight. "Or, we can return to the Palati and we can celebrate properly and quietly," Xene offered quietly, her brows furrowed in deep concern for the young bride-to-be.
"You, myself, and Theodora," the princess murmured, "How does that sound?" Xene asked gently as they walked, the princess still holding Evie's hand softly in her own. Honestly, she was just concerned that a night like this might color the view of her upcoming wedding.
She was not at all apologetic about losing her temper with Melina and she would not be apologizing. Some of these Leventi women needed to learn tact, grace, and when was the right time to speak and when wasn't. To kick a woman when she was down was certainly not the time to open your mouth.

Oh how Dorothea just wished that this night might be over so that she could go leave and curl up in bed. There would be no need for any parties the rest of her life, if she had her way. Sadly, she was certain she would not have her way, because there was still Evie’s marriage to her father to get through. Though, Dorothea hoped that it wasn’t in jeopardy, watching as Evie walked past her and Melina without a glance, off to who knew where.
This would be an excellent opportunity for her to make an escape, she thought suddenly, looking to see if Melina had the same thought. Surely her friend would want to get out of there too. Unfortunately, Dorothea knew that look of determination on Melina’s face and knew that she would not be leaving any time soon. Melina took off after her cousin, indicating that Dorothea should follow her. Although in many ways it was the last thing that Dorothea wanted to do, she also knew that it was right thing to do. She didn’t know Evie very well, but she wanted her to have an enjoyable time at her own celebration.
Reluctantly, Dorothea followed her friend in pursuit of Evie, quickly finding that they were not the only ones seeking to make the bride to be feel better. Princess Xene joined them, finding time to hush Melina, raising some of Dorothea’s heckles. Nobody should insult her friend like that. Especially when Melina was only seeking to help. Even if that help came in the form that was quite out of character for her friend. Melina was not usually boisterous or loud, and Dorothea knew how much making Evie feel better meant to her.
Taking a stand by Melina’s side, Dorothea caught some of Xene’s words to Evie. She wondered then what exactly it was Evie wanted marrying her father and what it was that everyone else thought she wanted. Did they see her as someone to pity for marrying a man who was so much older? Did they not know what kind of man that Gavriil was? He was kind, caring, fiercely loyal. And had never even remotely given any woman a look since his wife’s death. That meant Evie was special to him and Dorothea was certain that he had shown it. Surely Evie’s marriage to him was not something to pity but to celebrate. They did not all need to act like it was the last time the Leventi woman was going to enjoy herself.
Dorothea stood there, not at all certain how to insert herself into this group of women, but feeling a swirl of emotions that had previously been ambivalence toward the whole event. After a moment, she took a sip of wine and plopped down next to Evie on the sand.
“You know,” she began, “I always wondered a bit what it was like to attend a Leventi party. Now that I know, it seems not unlike quite a few at the Dimitrou home. Did my father ever tell you about the time when Alexa and Dorotheos accidently chased a live boar into the house? It was one of Alexa’s very first hunting trips and it did not go well. She spooked it from the forests right into our kitchen. Artemis only knows how that happened. My father had to kill it right in front of our guests. I’m not sure we quite made the right impression…they have never returned for dinner.”
She didn’t really know what had prompted that story from her other than the fact that it was one example of how this was not the worst party that she had ever been to. And that there would likely be plenty of adventures in store for Evie with Gavriil.

All of the feelings or inferiority that Imma had suppressed for so long came rushing out with her tears. Her sisters were so graceful and outgoing while she bumped into things and usually had no idea what to say. They were always immaculately dressed without a hair out of place, but her clothing was often stained with paint, clay, dirt, or all three and platinum ringlets had a habit of slipping out of her coiffure. They were praised for their beauty, making their youngest sister feel like an ugly duckling. Theo and Pia had married into royalty. Selene and Nana probably would too. She would be lucky if a goat farmer wanted to marry her. They were everything that she felt that she could never be and she always felt like an afterthought.
Evie’s gathering had turned into her own personal pity party, brought on by the spiked wine and Poseidon’s cruelty. Eventually her weeping began to subside, Her chiton was soaked and so was the sand around her. The white cloth she had wrapped around her shoulders was crumpled into a pile beside her. Lost in her own misery, she didn’t notice that Princess Xene had knelt beside her until she spoke. Her voice was soothing and her words comforting. No matter how inferior she was, her family and her friends still cared for her.
No.
She wasn’t inferior; she just felt that way. Her sisters had never held her back. Imma had done that on her own. Because of her own insecurity and low self-esteem, she had never allowed herself to see herself as others saw her. Whenever a man complimented her beauty, she assumed he was feeling sorry for her. But what if they were all sincere? Uncle Fotios saw something in her that was more important than beauty … the desire and potential to manipulate people to get what she wanted using cleverness, charm, and the knowledge she gained from reading and observing. He had chosen her to live with him so that she could learn from both him and her aunt. If such a powerful man thought so highly of her, then she wasn’t worthless at all.
She realized something else as well. Walking in her sisters’ shadows was easy. Stepping into the light and standing on her own was terrifying. Imma had been hiding behind her sisters all her life. Now it was time for her to take her life into her own hands and mold it into what she wanted it to be. A piece of clay started out as nothing but a lump. You had to sculpt it in order to give it shape. She was like clay now, unformed but with the promise to become something magnificent.
This epiphany hit her like a ton of bricks and completely stunned her. She felt the princess trying to pull her up, but her legs felt like jelly. Imma nodded when Xene asked her to walk with her. That was another sign of her worth. A princess wanted to spend time with her. Then Theo was there, attempting to haul her up as well. The youngest of the Leventi sisters took a deep hiccuping breath, listening to her confirm that she was not worthless and would marry well.
Moving her feet beneath her, she allowed her sister to pull her to her feet. A bit unsteady, she grabbed onto Theo’s arm to keep her balance. She felt lighter now, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from her soul. If she let go, she felt as if she might float up into the air. It was a heady feeling, to let go of all the negativity that had been holding her down.
She smiled disarmingly at her sister. “No, sitting on the sand will not help at all.” Turning toward Poseidon, she was about to thank him for sending her a revelation, but he wasn’t really Poseidon at all. He was just an ordinary sea lion. “Go back to the sea,” she urged, making a shooing motion with her hands, “You don’t belong here.”
Her grip on her sister’s arm tightened. “Theo, I feel all foofy. I think I need something to eat.”

Her grip on her sister’s arm tightened. “Theo, I feel all foofy. I think I need something to eat.”
Theodora wrapped her arm around Imma as she finally rose to her feet, breathing out a shuddering sigh of relief. Gods, what a night this had turned out to be. Glancing over toward where Evangelina walked off by herself, soon trailed by Dorothea, Melina, and Xene, the Queen shook her head. What a mess. Though none of this was really her fault, she still felt somehow responsible, and already she was thinking of ways she could make it up to Evie. She hadn’t asked for any of this, and it wasn’t fair that the focus was being taken off of her during her party.
However, there was little that could be done for it right now, and she trusted the other women to care for her cousin for the time being. She would make her apologies later, perhaps even offer to host a smaller, more intimate gathering in the Palati where the antics of the younger women could be ignored and forgotten. For now, she would tend to her sister, and hopefully they could all make it through the rest of the night without further mishap.
She couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation as Imma shooed the sea lion back into the sea, taking a fold of her dyed chiton and tenderly dabbing at the tears drying on her youngest sister’s face. ‘Theo, I feel all foofy. I think I need something to eat.’ Her laughter deepened a little, pulling the younger woman more tightly into her grasp and kissing her cheek. “I bet you do. Come on, let’s go find you something.”
The Queen thought she would probably never forgive whoever had spiked Imma’s wine, leading to this strange meltdown in the middle of the beach. She adored Imma, her sweet and shining innocence in a family of schemers and connivers. Though Selene was more likely to take the position of favorite sister, she certainly held a soft spot for the youngest, and as she walked her over to the one of the klines that still stood in spite of the wrecked tents and disheveled sand, she felt more protective of the young woman than she had in years. She shouldn’t have to live in the shadow of her sisters, not when she was such a bright star herself. Somehow, Theo would find a way to help Imma see that herself.
“Wait here, I’m going to grab a plate for you,” she told Imma, holding up a stern finger that emphasized she better not go anywhere. Walking over to the tables that miraculously still held food in spite of the sea lion’s rampage, she grabbed two plates and heaped them high with the offerings on display. She considered grabbing more wine for them both, as well, but considering recent events, she decided it was perhaps not the wisest choice.
Returning to her sister, she held out one of the plates to her and took a seat at her side before digging into her own. “Feeling any better?” she asked once they had some time to take in a few bites, reaching over to gently pat Imma’s knee. “What a night, huh? Hopefully your next wedding isn’t as chaotic as this one,” she teased with a wink. “And your groom is far more handsome.”

Hopefully your next wedding isn’t as chaotic as this one,” she teased with a wink. “And your groom is far more handsome.”
The dust of her chaotic family was beginning to settle and with clarity Evangelina had realized as much as she loved her family, she did not love large gatherings. She loved the way when her family came together how things sort of tumbled haphazardly out and for some reason they all returned to the way life was when they were younger. Whatever masks and social decorums they’d adapted disappeared and it was very evident they were a family… at least some sort of semblance of a family.
But it was the spectacle that was made while among their peers. Any hope of anonymity was lost even before it had a chance to grow. There wouldn’t be any escaping everyone at court knowing who was where and where was who by in the morning and it would all be tied back to her. For twenty-one years, she slipped far below the radar of those leaders of society among court. No one knew who she was, she was just another face among faces in the brood of Leventi girls. That wasn’t the case any longer. She was the future head of the house of Dimitrous’ wife and while the Dimitrous might not care one whit about her reputation… she cared. She’d been raised as a Leventi and that meant that what people thought about you was always something that played in the back of her mind.
Was she angry that her evening had been wrenched away from her and would set the court gossips tittering about her party planning skills? No, not really. But it did leave her feeling tired and suddenly feeling much older than the mere twenty-one. Suddenly, she wasn’t just thinking about herself in all of this but rather the implications this would throw on her future husband and his family. They might not care but she did.
At the shout of her name from her cousin, she paused and glanced over her shoulder at Melina who was bounding towards her with an amphora of wine and mugs. Her gaze softened, she did really love her cousins like sisters.
‘Wait! I came all this way for you. You’re not about to leave sober, are you? That isn’t the Leventi way! People are going to start confusing you with me! What next, you start bringing books to parties?’
A sigh escaped her, she really didn’t want to be preached at… Evangelina understood all too well that Melina hadn’t figured out what had settled over Evie yet. This party was lovely, but her place in this party was something she was beginning to wonder about. This wasn’t where she wanted to be or doing the things she wanted to be doing… The people here might have shown up for celebration but were they celebrating from their hearts or was it just seizing the moment to be happy regardless of the reasons?
Over her cousin’s shoulder she saw Xene and Dorothea and offered them faint smiles too but before she could placate Melina, Xene spoke up quieting Melina.
‘Do you mind if I join you?’ Xene had reached out and grasped her. ‘I'll come and sit with you. Wherever you want, or, we can return to the Palati and we can celebrate properly and quietly?’ Evangelina warmly squeezed Xene’s hand in a silent showing of strength and friendship. ‘You, myself, and Theodora. How does that sound?’
It sounded rather good if Evangelina was being perfectly honest, but it also sounded like the easy way out of dealing with her social gathering too.
Feeling the warmth of another body slide down next to her, she tilted her head and glanced to see the familiar face of Gavriil’s eldest daughter next to her.
‘You know, I always wondered a bit what it was like to attend a Leventi party. I’m not sure we quite made the right impression…they have never returned for dinner.’
Evangelina blinked in surprise for a couple of long seconds and maybe it was the wine or maybe it was that sage she’d smoked earlier but a low, throaty giggle started deep within her. The thought of Gavriil shooting a pig in front of guests was just what she’d needed to hear at that very moment. He didn’t care one little whit about any of this… and as much as she wanted to make a stellar impression upon Dorothea about how grown up she was and how well she could take up the mantle as Gavriil’s wife… not an easy task when everyone so obviously adored the first Lady Dimitrou, Evangelina suddenly felt lighter.
Her laugh continued as her head fell back and her eyes crinkled shut. This was just so typical of how things worked for her. She was obviously losing her mind.
