At ten-years-old, Danae was at a rather awkward stage of her life. Even though she was still very much a child, she was nowhere close to being the baby of her family as her family still saw her as. Even though Danae was growing more every day and showing more and more that she was ready to do more ‘grown-up’ things, her family didn’t let her do those things. It was rather frustrating to Danae to say the very least. The girl was able to grasp that she was still a child and there were just naturally some things that she couldn’t do. For example, she always had to stay home with her father when the others went to Court. She was more than well aware that there were quite a few restrictions on her just solely because of her age, but Danae had felt that she had outgrown some of them. She was ten now! Yet, somehow she was treated just the same as her littlest cousin Hebe and she was six. She should be old enough now to go to the market with her sister and her friends instead of having to wait for Circenia to bring her on a separate trip. It was embarrassing that Danae always had to be left behind when she innately knew that she was big enough for these kinds of trips, she just didn’t understand why her family couldn’t see it too.
Not once did it cross Danae’s mind that this sort of rule was in place not because the youngest Stravos was too little for this sort of thing, but instead it was more in place to let Chara have a fun day with her friends. The older girls might be kind enough to Danae, but the little girl couldn’t grasp that they really would not be fond of needing to play babysitter all day. Danae’s grand plan to show everyone that she wasn’t some little kid anymore would make their pleasant day into an annoying one, there just wasn’t any doubts about that as all the other girls were about twice her age. Poor Danae just hadn’t realized this because her family had always been kind enough to sugarcoat the real reason behind the lie that Danae was just too young to go with them.
Had she known the truth of the matter, maybe Danae wouldn’t have been so fixated on getting to go with the others on the next market trip. However, that was something that couldn’t have been changed that warm spring morning when the first carriage carrying her older sister’s friends began to arrive at the Stravos manor. In truth, it was already too late at that point as Danae had been scheming on how to get her parents to agree into letting her go for a while. As far as the young girl was concerned, she had the perfect plan. Her mother was busy elsewhere (probably focused on Elias as he was missing from the scene too) and her father was getting ready to host a very important business meeting, one that Danae was actually not allowed to attend, meaning that she would have probably been left to fend for herself for the afternoon. That made this the perfect evening to try her hand at convincing Chara to let her go with them.
Staying near the window, Danae waited until she saw the first carriage arrive before racing downstairs to her father’s office. Even though she was told to stay out of the way this morning, the youngest Stravos had no qualms about sneaking into the office space where she saw her father bent over a bunch of paperwork. In fact, he was so focused on his work that he didn’t even realize that his daughter was even in the room at all before she spoke, leaning in from the doorway, clearly trying to bend the rule of not going into Keikelius’s workspace that morning. This would normally be a clear violation, but Danae had a decent lie cooked up that might see her get away with this.
“Dad?” She said quietly, calling attention to herself, “I know you’re busy, but I was told to ask you… Can I go with Chara and Mom to the market?” It was an innocent enough question as she could need Keikelius’s permission for a thousand different reasons. Someone might have forgotten that Danae wouldn’t be with him that morning. Or that he would have to decide whether or not she could skip a few lessons. It could have also been that someone had sent her to him in the hopes that he would say no for them. Truly, her question was vague enough that Keikelius would hopefully not think too much about it. That had been her plan and it seemed that it worked to an almost extraordinary level as her father never even looked up at Danae as he answered, just shaking his head in affirmation as he muttered a few phrases that seemed to be approval for the plan. Not that it was very clear anyway as it had been a distracted mutter. Danae was pretty sure that he hadn’t really heard her at all before he shooed her out of his workspace.
Normally, Danae might have been fairly upset with this curt dismissal as the extreme separation anxiety she had as a toddler with him never fully went away, but today there was nothing, but a wide grin on her face as she closed the door behind her. This is exactly what she had wanted. Her dad had said yes and didn’t question what the girl was asking at all. That meant Danae had the first step in forcing Chara to let her tag along in the bag. Now all she had to do was inform her sister what her father had said.
Racing back to her room before the gaggle of girls that had now gathered in the foyer departed, Danae was quick to grab her little coin purse before making her way to the staircase. As she was still a child, Danny didn’t really care all that much about her appearance meaning that she thought nothing of wanting to tag along in the frumpy green play smock she wore around the house so that she wouldn’t dirty any of her ‘nicer’ clothes. Although her outfit wasn’t necessarily horrid, it certainly wasn’t up to the caliber of Chara and her friends. Especially not with some of the pins coming loose and her usually neat braid starting to see some stray hairs escape the neat little ribbon that tied it all together. If that wasn’t bad enough, the mere fact that there wasn’t a scrap of makeup or jewelry on her made her truly look like an ugly duckling in comparison to her the shining jewels of Athenia gathered in this grand hall.
“Chara! Chara!” Danae called out as she reached the bottom of the stairs, trying to get her older sister’s attention. She had to weave through the group of girls in order to get to her older counterpart as Chara had made herself the center of attention -- again. It took her a moment, but once she did, she made sure that her older sister was looking right at her as she said with a beaming grin, certain that her plan would work. “Dad said I can go today!” Clearly the young girl was excited to finally get to be one of the ‘big girls’ and tag along with them, but that didn’t mean that the others would be as well. After all, in most of their eyes, Danae was their friend’s annoying little sister and would not want her tagging along.
However, Chara could not get away with the same things that Danae could. Being older and more aware of the importance of days like this, the oldest Stravos couldn’t exactly confront her father in regards to why he had told Danae that she could go. That would likely end in the whole trip being cancelled as Keikelius got annoyed with his daughter’s squabbling being brought to him. As Chara was the oldest, she’d be the one in trouble as she was the one who should’ve known better. Turning to mother wasn’t an option as well as she was gods knew where. So Chara would either have to let Danae tag along or cause a fuss in front of her friends… both seemingly impossible options, but the elder girl was going to have to choose.
Looking up at her sister with an excited and hopeful grin, Danae could only silently pray that her sister wouldn’t do anything that might take away this rare chance from her.

Shopping trips were of paramount importance to Chara, second only to court sessions. After all, what better way existed to show how much she greatly outclassed the lesser nobles around her than by presenting herself at court with the latest and most expensive fashions they couldn’t even begin to dream of affording? Of course, not just anyone could accompany her on these excursions. She absolutely could not risk having her reputation tarnished. She couldn’t be seen with the likes of lesser ladies, as such, those given the honor of shopping with her had been chosen very, very carefully. It was all about drawing attention and envy. The ladies selected to join her were both from excellent stock and boasted great beauty, but never enough to outshine the gracious Stravos lady who invited them in the first place.
A schedule was always appreciated on days like these. No self respecting host could carry on a half-decent event without one. So naturally, the day proceeded the way Chara had foreseen -- full of gossip and giggling and gloating. It was, however, about time for the grandest event of the day -- going out to the finest markets and bringing back the greatest spoils. She had gathered all of her guests in the foyer as they chattered amongst themselves about the beautiful things they would wear and purchase. She was at the center of it all (because when wasn’t she?), trying to quiet the ladies so she could prepare their departure when she heard the shrill, irritating squeaking voice of the most annoying little sister the Gods could have ever created.
Chara’s jovial demeanor quickly soured as she stared her youngest siblings down with a cold, exasperated glint in her eye. Danae knew she wasn’t allowed to disturbed her oldest siblings on days like this, so what did she want? Chara, honestly, did not want to hear it. She did not have the time to shoo her sister away. She and her guests needed to be seen at the perfect time and this was going to be a grand delay for sure, because she fully expected Danae to throw a big fit over once again being told she was not allowed to accompany her sister. However, before she could even begin to say this, Danae piped up again.
What?
How on earth had Father approved this? Where was their mother? Surely she would see that Danae was in no way fit to come on these trips? Chara had no chance to protest before her friends turned around and greeted the most insufferable Stravos on the planet with a chorus of adoring sighs.
‘She’s adorable, Chara!’
‘You didn’t tell us she was coming along today!’
Good Gods, not today.
Chara looked down at her sister with a pleasant expression, though she was burning up inside with annoyance. If going to Father now about this ridiculous decision, she would have made it, but now her fellow ladies were fawning over her sister -- she would look terrible for trying to turn her away now. It was a clever move whether Danae knew it or not, but she would most certainly not hear that praise from Chara. “Did he?” she asked, as though she were pleasantly surprised, “were you so excited you forgot to dress in something more presentable?”
‘Oh, please, Chara! Surely she can come?’
Of course her subtle insult had been detected by her friends, who were now joining together in pleading for Danae. Godsdamn it. “Ladies, ladies,” she said, “I’ve no intention of turning my eager little sister away. Today seems ideal to learn a lesson in grace and poise, don’t you think?”
The chorus of agreement was only a slight relief.
“I do hope you’ve been paying attention to your lessons, Danae,” she said, “We’re going to be stared at everywhere we go -- it’s important you look like a proper Stravos lady.” She reached down and lifted Danae’s chin slightly, “Chin up like that, so they know how much better you are.” Smiling again though she did not want to, Chara addressed her guest with grace.
“Come now, my dear ladies, it’s time to shop!”
With that, Chara turned and began to lead her companies from the foyer, silently praying that perhaps Zeus would take mercy on her reputation that was sure to suffer now and strike her goblin of a sister down.

Danae could not believe her good fortune when Chara actually agreed to allow her younger sister to tag along on her shopping day with the other girls. Her plan had actually worked! Truth be told, Danae had not expected this conniving little scheme to force her older sister into letting the youngest have her way to actually work. After all, Danny knew how much of a drama queen her sister could be and how things tended to turn out when they weren’t done exactly the way that Chara wanted. It usually ended in some sort of large temper tantrum that had both mom and dad caving into the older girl’s will -- much like the ones that Danae used to throw when she was little, but with more graceful stomping… whatever that entailed.
The point is, Danae had expected Chara to throw a fit to father or call their mother away from whatever she had been doing to get Danae to stay away from her group of friends. Maybe that’s what would have happened too had Chara’s friends inadvertently stepped in and began to coo over the ten-year-old. As a young child who acted more like a boy than a girl, Danae was not as pleased with this bit as all of their words made it sound like they all saw her as some sort of baby doll -- which was decisively not what the young girl wanted to take away from this day. In fact, the young girl scowled at some of the more flowery comments about how cute she was and how adorable her play smock was. This was not what Danae wanted. She wanted to be treated like the big girl that she knew she was. Not some little kid that everyone else could dress up. She had already spent enough of her life having to be that for Chara. She wasn’t going to be that for her friends too.
However, her grumpiness seemed to be only more endearing as the comments did not stop as Danae clearly grew more unhappy with all the talk about how cute she was. That wasn’t the point! The older girls didn’t call each other cute, at least not like they were doing now, so it wasn’t fair that they were doing it to Danae. The young girl, unfortunately, did not have any sort of recourse though. Not when she so desperately wanted to tag along. Her desire to be seen as anything other than a little girl was also enough to hold her tongue as the barbed comment from Chara did not escape the littlest Stravos’s attention. A part of her deflated at the words, but in reality, this really was not anything new. Her sister never held back from such comments when in other’s company, which meant that everything was no holds barred when the sisters were actually alone. Chara had said plenty of wicked stuff to her little sister and Danae would be lying if she said that they didn’t affect her.
Case in point, as soon as Chara made a comment about Danae’s dress, the young girl glanced down at the play smock that she was currently dressed in. As she was a tomboy through and through with absolutely no interest in keeping the frills and decorations of her dresses neat and unwrinkled, Circenia had been forced to fill Danae’s wardrobe with outfits that could withstand the rough and tumble personality that the gods had decided to bless her with. This one was dark green and had the markings of paint stains from art projects long since forgotten and was about as plain as could be. Had this been an outfit on a peasant girl, no one would have batted an eye… but since it was on a Stravos. Well, it was not something that a Stravos lady should want to be seen in. Although Danae would have liked to think of herself as practically grown up, the truth of the matter was that she was still too little to put much credence into these things. She would quite literally think nothing of running about in a peplos that was becoming threadbare and littered with holes if it meant that it was in her favorite color or something as trivial as that. She didn’t yet understand how important it was that someone like her should always dress their best. It was simply a foreign concept to her at such a young age.
That was likely why the young girl couldn’t see what the issue was with her play smock, but was still more than a little hurt at Chara’s words. Not only did her sister basically call her ugly, but now Danae felt dumb for not understanding the problem in the first place. If this wasn’t bad enough, Chara’s words stung even more because this was one of Danae’s favorite outfits. She loved the color and the loose way it bagged against her tiny frame. That made it easier to run in, after all. Not that this mattered right now. What did Chara care of the colors that Danny deemed pretty? Or being able to run? Chara didn’t care. She never took any sort of interest held by her sister. That should have been more than enough to remind Danae that the best course of action right now was to do nothing, but the hurt she felt over being insulted and not understanding why meant that Danae’s voice wavered quite a bit when she did finally did speak, asking the one thing that Chara neglected to make clear in her litany of harsh words against the child. “What’s wrong with my dress?.. I like it...” It didn’t really matter what Danae thought of her outfit though. Chara was not going to entertain the confused mutterings of the kid sister she did not invite.
That much was made clear by the call of the elder Stravos to see the gaggle of girls to the carriage that was going to take them to the market. As upset as Danae was, she hurried to be one of the first who got in. After all, she was fully aware that Chara would make any excuse to not include her and that was likely to include claiming that there weren’t enough seats. Being one of the first to pile in, Danae was lucky enough to snag an outer seat, but with her being the new living doll for this friend group, the poor girl wasn’t saved from being squished as all of Chara’s friends wanted this little kid near them. Danae was a bit resistant though so she was able to keep a hold of her seat as they made their way to the market.
The whole carriage was loud with the chattering of a handful of noble girls, but Danae didn’t take part in the conversation as they were all focused on boys and makeup and other things that the youngest Stravos did not care about. This was all fine and dandy as it allowed for the youngest of all of them to just enjoy the view as the carriage winded through the busy city streets. It was a bit of a boring ride for Danae, but at least it was a mercifully short one as within no time at all, the girls arrived at the market and they all filtered out. Danae was the last to get up as she was too little to not avoid getting hit by flying elbows, which means that all the other girls were ready to go as Danae tried to climb out while clutching her coin purse.
Fearing that Chara was going to leave her behind, Danae practically scrambled out of the carriage, but it didn’t go well for her as she tripped on the edge of her skirt and tumbled out, landing on the ground with a small yelp of surprise. She was not hurt, thank the gods, but the stinging in her elbows as she tried to pull herself back up clearly signaled that the skin had been scraped. There were more than likely little pinpricks of blood dotting her arms. However, that wasn’t Danae’s concern as when she had fallen, she had been holding the little pouch that held her allowance. Now the coins had gone flying everywhere and poor Danae was more focused on trying to get them all back as she held back sniffles. She had just wanted to show everyone that she was a big girl, but now everything was going so hopelessly wrong. All Danae could do as she gathered up the little metal pieces was hope that her sister had not seen her fall. Danae knew that she would never hear the end of it if Chara had seen her tumble…

The idea of having her irritating little sister accompanying them to market was about as unattractive as the little urchin was herself. What was Chara to do with such a mess? The poor thing didn’t even own proper market attire because she was far too busy mucking about like some boy. Often, Chara wished the Gods had blessed their mother with another son. At least then there would be none of this utter nonsense. If the carriage had not pulled up when it had, Chara would have risked storming into their father’s office and demanding that Danae be left behind. In spite of her ‘sweet’ words, the idea that Danae could accompany them did not sit well with the eldest Stravos daughter. She was certain Danae had simply bugged their father until he finally said yes just to be rid of the little pest. It would have to be something investigated later however.
Chara entered the carriage last in order to be the first to step foot into the market when they arrived. She did her very best to appear unbothered as her friends went between talking about what she wanted and cooing over her sister. It was easy enough to redirect conversation but at the end of the day, she was not the center of attention and that would always be a problem. If it were possible for Chara to toss her sister from the carriage, she would have done it. Sharing a space with that little brat was enough to make Chara’s blood boil, but she kept herself composed because it was necessary. Now was not the time to break into a fit of rage over the little twerp. Revenge for this slight against her could be carried out when the two sisters returned home. Alone. For the time being, Chara directed attention where she knew best -- herself -- and did so until the novelty of having a little girl accompanying them wore off.
Of course, that was until they actually arrived at the market. Naturally, Chara was the first out of the carriage, moving with graceful steps as she exited and stood in wait for her companions to follow. One after another they followed her lead (as they should) until the carriage was empty, save for one irksome little girl. Chara was almost turned to prepare leading her ladies into market, until she noticed their attention was once again, not on her. While she had not quite fully seen Danae trip and tumble onto the ground, she had heard it. She also heard the collective gasps of her friends and their worried chatter and they glanced between themselves. Chara couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
Part of Chara thought Danae might have tripped intentionally to irk her older sister further. After all, nothing made her more furious than to have to share the limelight. Though to think that would presuppose that Danae had an ounce of intelligence in that empty head of hers. No, her little sister was just a clumsy twit. A clumsy twit running this trip. The Stravos had no issue grabbing her younger sister by the arms and pulling her to her feet and away from the coins. “My sweet little sister,” she said with as much feigned concern as she could possibly muster, “Are you hurt?”
Turning to her friends, she let out an exasperated sigh. “Well don’t just stand there, girls! Help pick up these coins! I’ll give the one with the most in her hand jewelry from my personal collection!” Chara pulled Danae aside as they swarmed where she had fallen in an attempt to collect the metal pieces on the ground. Such work was not fit for a Stravos, but that had merely been a distraction.
“I don’t know what you’re playing at right now, but it ends here.” She hissed lowly in Danae’s ear, squeezing the girl's upper arm tightly before turning her loose.
