Not that there was ever a good time for this sort of thing.
After his rocky parting with Vangelis and the departure of his brothers and father to fight the Taengean war in Egypt, the rule of Colchis had been left to his mother and by default himself as well. The two were well versed in handling the events of state that came up in the absence of a militant king and his heir, but Zanon was more used to having his younger brothers and other commanders around to delegate to. Now with the threat of the Egyptian army potentially landing on their soil if they could not be stopped at the southern borders meant Zanon was tasked with preparing not only for a winter, but an invasion as well.
His mother had taken over all matters of court and most of state, those large enough to warrant another set of eyes were looked over by the two of them and those chancellors that remained, but with most every man of fighting age departed from the shores they were a nation of elders, women, and children. Colchian elders, women, and children, but that could only do so much if the Northern invaders broke their traditions and came south. The arrows found in the ship that had been dragged out on Nethisa had borne the mark of the northern tribes, and their boldness had been growing.
By the blessing of the gods, Evras was progressing in her pregnancy, further already than most save for Dion and the one they had lost last. It was another thing to strain his nerves, trying to ensure that nothing got back to her that could cause her extra stress after she had been ordered onto bedrest. The death of Ariah had already been an additional fraying on his nerves, but then to receive the message from Iona had very nearly broken down what little control he had left.
Zan was in his study when the guard brought Helena through, clearing away the more important papers and gesturing for the madame to sit in the chair before his desk. It was a far more formal meeting than those he'd had with her in the past, but this was a far more serious matter.
"No one is to disturb us. If the Princess Evras asks, it is a business meeting that will be concluded shortly." The prince's orders to his guard were met with a nod, and as the door closed dark eyes looked over the woman before him.
"I received a message from Iona. One I was hoping you might be able to assist me in replying to."

Life was ever persistent in keeping Helena handling curveballs. First it was Eudoxia’s lie and then death, then it was establishing herself at the head of the hetaerae and governing them into being functional women again. God, was that a chore in and of itself. Hypatia was her largest challenge; She brooded and judged Helena’s every move and it was no secret that she thought she could do better than her at being the madam of the brothel. It took time for Hypatia to shut up and sulk in silence, but temptation of larger pay if she did as she was told and bring information to her madam was too good to pass up. That was how Lena did it after all, if her girls brought her valuable info then they got to keep a larger part of the pay their patrons gave to Helena for her girl’s services. Each girl came with their own challenges; Hypatia’s brooding, Cosima off trying whatever hallucinogenic plant she could (not to mention the partying), Amaris’s particular...tastes, and then there was Iona’s naivety. Thankfully though, Hypatia was her only problem child.
At least that was what she thought was the case at that time. She had more dire things to worry about anyway, and one of those was Zanon. Zanon had requested and audience with her and it had sent Lena’s mind racing with a multitude of feelings: panic, longing, desire, the works really. The woman was still hurting over their goodbye to being lovers, the memory of it was laced with sensuality and pain. She loved Zanon, truly. They had a fire that had to be dimmed to a flickering candle because he decided that he had to try with his wife again.
Fucking Princess Evras, what happened to her being a poisonous witch that he wished to be rid of? Hell, maybe she did some witchcraft to get pregnant again and this baby is some spawn of Hades. That’s what she hoped for. In her mind, Evras stole Zanon away with the help of the snake family of hers. Lena was almost forcing herself to believe that, it was the only thing that helped her accept the situationf or what it was. She couldn’t do anything but remain a friend to Zanon and wait. She just wasn’t sure how much waiting she was capable of.
She raised an eyebrow at his lack of a greeting. “Hello to you too, your royal highness,”. She greeted him with a light tone of sarcasm. “What sort of message?”.
