Olympia of Mikaelidas, Queen of Taengea, needed ladies in waiting. She was in a delicate condition, or so Aikaterine had heard and assumed. All of the rumors didn’t make it through the chain to her. Not to mention, Stephanos and she didn’t spend much time talking about his wife at all. Just at the end, when it was some brilliant plan to keep her from needing to go and suffer under the wrath of her brother-in-law. Stephanos had been her knight in shining armor saving her from one thing and then another. The brunette couldn’t say no to the offer he had proposed, not how he had put it. No matter how afraid she was to face Olympia after all of what had happened that day.
However, she could wait until the morning to go present herself to the Queen. A long bunch of hours filled with anything besides sleep. Aikaterine wondered how she would need to speak to her, what would she say? What tasks would she need to do? It was an honor and privilege to serve her - yet how in the world was she supposed to look her straight in the face knowing what had gone on. What if Pia knew what had gone on the day before? She had tossed and turned and nearly snuck out the door in the morning, but that would be disobedient. She had already agreed.
She slipped slowly from the bed she had been afforded for the night. This would be a one time placement and something more permanent and appropriate for a lady in waiting would be provided. However, she wasn’t worried about it now. Now she was worried about the impression she would make on the queen. Disheveled from the trip and doubty when she had first met the king was one thing, but the queen? Aikaterine reached for the chiton she had been afforded from the day before. Her own she would still need to tend to. It was dirty from the dust of the race over top the water from the accident in the stream. It was not fit for serving royalty.
Her fingers fidgeted with her brown tendrils of hair the entire walk from one wing to the next. She had been told by the others where she would find the queen. Her steps were steady, yet slow. She didn’t want to appear rushed or out of breath when she arrived - but there was still a sense that she might be late for whatever it was that Olympia would need. It was a good job for Aikaterine. She was obedient and passive. For better or for worse.
Aikaterine slipped silently into the room, her head already bowed to be respectful to the queen. Her bow was deeper the instant she came into the room. The close proximity made her stomach churn, but in a different way than the flutters Stephanos had given her the day before. What if she knew… what if it was on her face… Aikaterine thought to herself as she kept her attention focused on the floor as she introduced herself. ”Your highness, I am Lady Aikaterine of Meganea. I have been hired as a lady-in-waiting for your needs.. Is there anything you require immediately?” She only hoped that she might be sent off on some errand. But, there were so many tasks that a lady in waiting could tend to and errands for things were only probably a third of them. Instead, she stood stoic waiting for an answer. Aikaterine wanted to look up. She wanted to see Olympia close up. She hadn’t been brave enough to introduce herself at the coronation nor thought she was important enough - despite her wealth. How pregnant was she? Was she as beautiful as they say? There were questions piling up only to be answered when she was given the permission to relax. A moment that felt like a lifetime.

She had been kept abed aside from the rare moments she was allowed to do any sort of walking about her chambers, everyone around her treating her as if she was a fragile flower about to blow away at any moment. The night of terror when she’d woken up in a pool of blood and feared the baby was coming had passed and she hadn’t felt pains anywhere near as bad since then, but given the precarious position of the monarchy the child was more important than she or anyone else wanted to admit. If she didn’t give Stephanos a living son people would begin to whisper about weakness, they would say a Leventi was the wrong choice. Not that people didn’t already complain of her being a whore and a social climber in the best of times.
Smoothing her hand over the swell of her stomach, Pia looked longingly to the balcony with the sun and fresh air beckoning her from her place in her bed. She’d given Desma some much needed time to rest after the woman had saved her and the baby from any tragedies once she felt more stable. It was about time her old nursemaid had a day off, but it did mean her staff was rather sparse. She had been meaning to add to her retinue, but with the maids she had and her sisters visiting so frequently it had slipped her mind to hire many ladies in waiting. Only a sweet, if plain, friend of the family’s daughter had really taken up a permanent place to try to better herself through a marriage.
The queen didn’t turn to look right away as her door was opened, still keeping light eyes pointed towards the open doorway as she was propped up on her pillows. Dressed simply for her, she wore only a plain white chiton in the softest material she could find, a billowy piece with room still for her to grow that she had come to rely on as her seventh month drew abreast. It was topped with a robe of deep blue silk that was embroidered with joined unicorns and lions, symbols of Leventi and Mikaelidas house that Selene had brought her. Her nearly black curls were tumbling around her shoulders, unpinned and wild without any sort of taming due to her current state.
Turning to look as her maid brought in a woman who looked vaguely familiar but not quite enough for her to place her name, Olympia kept her face expressionless as the woman entered and addressed her. One brow arched as the brunette declared her purpose in being there. She hadn’t ordered any new ladies, and though she wouldn’t put it past her mother or Dowager Queen Elise to order her new assistance, it struck her as strange. Especially given the seemingly older nature of the woman and the province name attached instead of a family. She didn’t appear to need to attach herself to a queen’s retinue to make a good match. Pia kept her silence for a moment, pursing her lips as she took her in before finally speaking.
”I have not called for any additional staff. How have you then come to be in my service?” Her voice was level and even, curious and cautious as she remembered what Stephanos had said about Irakles. What if this was the uncle’s way of getting someone close to her to harm the baby? Still, the barest hint of a breeze blew through the doorway to the balcony and Pia gazed at it a moment more before turning back to the woman. ”Though, as you are here and have asked. I would very much like to go outside. I’ve been told I can only move about when I’m accompanied to ensure I don’t fall and hurt us.” The ‘us’ was emphasized as she cupped the obvious growth of her stomach, a fond smile crossing her lips for a moment before she drew herself back together and put the even expression back on, holding out a hand to see if this Aikaterine would indeed assist her.

She wasn’t expecting the job to be easy. Nevertheless, Kat hadn’t forecasted to be doubted from the moment she went through the door to be a challenge. She froze in silence as couldn’t find the right words to answer the question at first. It wasn’t that she didn’t know the answer. No, she knew exactly how she got the job and how thankful for the opportunity she was. It wasn’t even to be closer to Stephanos on a regular basis, rather, more about being away from Cretheus. Of course, she liked to look at the king and she cherished the night they had together. But, she wasn’t the kind of person who just expected for anything to keep coming. It wasn’t her choice. She wasn’t in control. Aikaterine was acutely aware that she was never in true control of her own life from birth to death, it’d never be her own. Not really.
Finally, lush pink lips parted to speak. ”His majesty thought you might need tending to as he worries for you and the young prince.” The words spoken as confidently as she could muster noting the common hope or assumption it was a boy in there. The Queen was intimidating and bluntly stopped her in her tracks with questioning her very existence in the room. Her breath sucked inward as she waited for the woman to accept the reasoning. It might have been embellished some, but it was better than merely saying Stephanos sent me.
Aikaterine pulled up from her bow to allow for her green gaze to meet with Olypmia’s request. She wanted to go outside. The breeze was felt, it was warm and calming. Summer was going to end soon and the weather would turn wet. But, for now, the sky was blue and inviting. She couldn’t fault the mistress for wanting to go. However, Aikaterine was second guessing the question. This was the queen, she was in charge, but what if they didn’t want her to go? There was no one to ask, no one to confirm that it was really okay. The lady did not want to be at fault should Pia fall again. Although, she knew what it was like to lose a child and it wasn’t like the Queen would want to jeopardize it.
With an obedient nod, her own hand extended to meet Olympia’s. ”I’d be happy to oblige. I am afraid I’ve only just arrived and am not familiar with the palati and will need direction to your destination, your highness.” Maybe she would assume that she had only arrived that morning. Unless it had already gotten to her about the horses. The horses from a province clearly Dimitrou. Aikaterine tried to push all the worries from her mind as she intended to put focus to the job in the here and now.
”The sun is appealing. I remember when I was pregnant with my fourth baby feeling as though I was a lizard soaking up as much as I could.” Her tone completely agreeable as she didn’t want to be a bore. She was unsure if Olympia would allow it, though if it was not wanted - the queen had seemed to have no problem speaking her mind.

The silence of the other woman lasted a beat too long, and Pia wasn’t sure how she actually came to be here, but she knew it would take her a moment to trust this new acquaintance. Keeping her hazel eyes leveled on Aikaterine, she met the woman’s gaze with the self-assured look of someone who knew how to get what she wanted. She had gotten herself to where she was on her own accord after all, none of what she now had was aided at all by her family or their plans. No, she had made herself a woman of ambition unafraid to do what it took to reach her goals. Not that she hadn’t been helped along by the grace of the gods several times. The luck it had taken to get a position in the dowager queen’s household, the catching of the king’s eye. Drawing Stephanos into her bed, or was it the other way around.
She could sense the hesitance in the other woman’s actions, nostrils flaring slightly as if she were about to be told no. The hand extended to her pleased her but Olympia couldn’t help but arch a brow as she glanced over to the open door and back to the woman before her. Surely she was just playing demure, she couldn’t actually be that daft. ”Of course. I can see how it might be difficult to find the door.” Her tone was level and she used Kat’s hand to help herself up off the bed, bracing her other hand against her back and noting the inches between them. It was a source of pride that she was so tall, had always been one of the tallest women in court.
Padding slowly toward the arched doorway that led to her balcony, she leaned against the smaller woman for assistance even when she felt it wasn’t entirely needed, paranoid that anything might go wrong until she was settled on the couch that had been pulled into the sun for her. Four children? The queen looked the new maid up and down for a moment before shrugging, adjusting herself on the pillows that propped her up and tucking her feet beneath the hem of her chiton. Dark curls picked up with the wind and blew about her as she closed her eyes to savor the feel of the sun on her creamy pale skin, and Pia gave a sigh of relief before turning to Aikaterine.
”Four children. Your husband must be pleased. I hope I shall be able to give mine as many, or more. My mother bore five, perhaps his majesty and I shall have six and do her one better.”
Pia laughed at the thought of six small children running about her feet, a mixture of blondes and brunettes with their father’s blue eyes and tanned skin. They would be well loved, her little princes and princesses, with so many doting aunts and future uncles around them, and the entirety of Taengea. She would make it her mission to find them only the best marriages, make her daughters queens and her sons kings and generals, all of them her legacy to look upon and be proud of from Elysium.
”What brought you to Vasiliadon. To seek employment with the royal family you must think highly of your skills. Why should I accept you as one of my ladies?” Turning her gaze onto the woman before her, Pia tried to keep the edge of harshness from her voice, only neutral as she conducted her miniature interrogation. Her greatest fear was that this woman was a spy or a potential murderer sent from her enemies, the thought that it might have been her husband’s mistress was not yet near the front of her mind.

The quip was better to be left unreplied. Aikaterine had mistakenly assumed that the queen had wanted to go walk in outside, perhaps in a courtyard among the summer blooms. The months were changing and they wouldn’t be around for much longer. Instead, her own gaze followed that of Olympia’s to the balcony. If she were younger, she might have blushed at the mistake. However, she was old enough to know that things would pass. She just hoped she wouldn’t continue to make a fool of herself in front of the queen.
Instead, their trip from the room out into the radiant warmth of the sun would be a short one. Aikaterine matched her own pace and stayed even with her. Under any other circumstances she would have stayed a pace behind the lady, but this was for her own protection. If she were to fall, Kat was attentive and ready for it. Thankfully, it didn't. She was transferred from the bed to another lounge for comfort without a trip or collapse. The relief washed over her face. Since she hadn’t been trained for this kind of work as a lady - her emotions were far too obvious.
Her watchful green eyes made sure that she was situated safely before she made herself comfortable on the ground of the balcony. The only way she found it possible to submit to the queen and be lower than she was, trying her best to be impressive. Though, she was sure she was doing everything wrong - down to the conversation she had stirred. Her expression morphing into a somber shake of the head. ”He was. I think. He was not a man of many words and we only had one son to our three daughters.” The past tense emphasized. If she were still married, she likely wouldn’t have been so easily allowed to be in service to the queen.
”Six is an ambitious goal. Taengea will be truly blessed when that happens.” She knew what the duty it was for Olympia to bear many heirs for Stephanos. The dangers were lurking everywhere. The more children the better and even more so if they were sons.
She shifted some as Olympia asked about her own intentions. That was a scary question to answer, especially when it was so important not to anger the queen in her condition. Aikaterine’s fingers toiled at the hems and folds of her chiton to place them perfectly around her as she kneeled. ”Your majesty, I must admit that serving you was not my original motivations for coming to Vasiliadon.” She actually hadn’t even thought of it, though it would have been the smartest move for her husband to make for her before he died. He had prepared her dowry and sent the missives to find suitors. Yet, what better place to be seen as a catch and more important than other ladies than the side of the Queen of Taengea.
”I am still young and do not care to burden my young son. He will inherit enough responsibility with the land and horses in Meganea” Meganea, a known province of Dimitrou with a main export of horses. An export that the Leventi’s also excelled in. It seemed to be the most passive way to bring up the horses and the truth of why she was around. Vasiliadon was a place of many people, one of which happened to be the king, to sell horses. It wasn’t exactly her fault that she had been born in a province ruled by another house and horses bred by chance in competition to the Leventi’s.
”I am obedient above all qualities. I have bore four children already for which I hope my knowledge could be most helpful to you.” Aikaterine hated talking about herself. It was much easier to praise her horses and speak for hours on the wonderful abilities they had. When it came to selling herself, it was much harder than when she had to merely race the king to a tree. She was at a loss for what else to even say. It wasn’t her idea. It was Stephanos and now she had wished that she had asked him for more coaching in dealing with his beautiful wife. She could only internally pray that this justification was enough for Olympia, enough to prove that she would be useful at her side without needing to say anything more about Stephanos decision.

As the maid settled herself on the ground Pia did not move to correct her. It might have been acceptable for her to find a lower seat to take or stand off to the side, but in her fairly powerless state she found it a relief to see someone else positioned below her on the ground. Reclining back against the pillows, she drew her hair over one shoulder and allowed both of her hands to settle on her stomach, stroking it gently as she frequently caught herself doing, especially when she was deep in thought. The past tense was not lost on her as Aikaterine spoke of her husband, and she gave a hum of acknowledgement as her eyes closed slightly to enjoy the heat of the sun all the more as she tipped her head to the sky.
”Six sons, and then we shall see about daughters. I am only young after all.” She knew she was speaking brazenly, as if she could decide the sex of all of her children before they were born. It was silly perhaps, but as long as she kept herself confident the fear didn’t creep in, the nightmares weren’t as frequent and neither were the moments where she found she couldn’t breathe no matter what calming methods were tried. Anxiety took hold when she allowed herself to believe anything but her own carefully crafted lies.
Her gaze turned sharp and she narrowed her eyes to stare at the woman on the ground. She knew full well that Meganea lay within Dimitrou provinces, and the mention of horses which her family prided themselves on so highly made her suspicions soar. So she was a climber then, intentional or not. Olympia held little love for those who thought they could compete with Leventi stock, but then she also knew that in that regard there was little for her to fear. Her father and uncles maintained the best in all of Taengea and the royal stables were full of the prized steeds. This woman from a nobody fief would cause no threat to her.
”How sweet, I am sure your son will enjoy raising his ponies. But does he not need his mother for a guardian? Or have you left a second husband behind?” The bite of her tone would not be one easily missed, but she allowed herself to relax as Aikaterine described reasons why she might find her useful. It would be nice to have a mother along, one who had borne four children successfully would be an asset. And, after all, if she was a spy of some sort, she could always have her taken care of. ”Well then. If you are to remain, I do hope you are taking the tea. I find at the moment I can allow no one but myself to do the childbearing until the household is stabilized. You understand, I am sure.”
With another motion, Olympia shifted to look at the new lady on the floor, taking her in and trying to push down any fears of her husband finding pleasures with others. She was supposed to be finished caring about that. And anyway, this mouse of a creature would hardly be enticing to him more than once or twice. ”Then, Aikaterine of Meganea. If you are to be my lady I suppose we ought to get to know one another. Tell me of yourself and your home.”

If you are to be my lady I suppose we ought to get to know one another. Tell me of yourself and your home.”
Her lower position was thought out. Aikaterine was doing everything in her power to be sure that Olympia would be ahead of her. She wasn’t about to be in open competition nor wanting to be thrown out the palati. That would be a shameful way to go about finding a new husband. Course, so was sleeping with a man as his mistress - even if it was the king. Though, this inferiority made it easy for the queen to look down on her with narrowed expressions. They were intimidating to say the least. Aikaterine’s whole posture tilted just slightly. It was hard to look proper when all one wanted to do was crawl into a ball and hide in the nearest hole. But, she did her best to try and appear as unphased as possible.
At least the queen didn’t erupt in anger about that facts of her trade. Aikaterine had been raised this way and could hardly help it. Except, she could have denied the king’s hasty missive while angry at his wife. A spiteful war she had no idea she was getting into when she initially accepted the invitation. Instead, there was more questions about why she wasn’t needed at home. Her lips parted with an even tone to reply. ”My husband’s brother, Lord Cretheus, is his guardian. As Cretheus is also my kyrios, in charge of the dowry contracted before my husband’s death for my remarriage.” He was the next closest male in the family and therefore all the responsibilities had fallen on that evil man.
The tea. Without further words from Olympia, Aikaterine might have been completely naive of what she was talking about. Aktis nor Cretheus had any need for informing her of such creations in their world. She had no use for the knowledge and had never needed to be so aware of preventing a pregnancy. All she had experienced in the past was the immense need for more children from her husband. This was a strange and new concept. Even if she didn’t exactly know what Pia was asking her to do, she nodded. These would be questions to ask other servants or maybe even Stephanos later on where her ignorance would be met with far less judgement. ”As you wish, your majesty.”
She had wanted to add that it was not needed. The worries hidden behind the blunt words were easy to surmise, especially when Aikaterine was already well aware that the fears were justified. She couldn’t lie. There had already been enough skirting and creative wording circling the truth. She was many things, but a straight out liar - she wasn’t.
Her attention strayed to look at the clear sky. There was too much on her mind now. This was supposed to be a solution, but it was turning into something of a nightmare. Aikaterine didn’t like confrontation. She wanted to stay away from Cretheus to hopefully not be tortured day to day, but the Queen didn’t seem to be completely on board with the idea of accepting her. She was right. But, Kat had really hoped that secrets wouldn’t be so easily found out. It was hard to look a pregnant woman in the face while knowing what she did. There was tinge of guilt walled up by the kindness he had shown her. The feelings she had never known before.
Aikaterine straightened her posture to attempt to hide the contempt in talking about herself. She didn’t want to talk about herself. It seemed so vain and she’d didn’t feel there was much to boast about in the first place. Her life story was boring, but the queen had asked. ”I was married to Lord Aktis of Meganea at fifteen. Our families have adjacent properties, my father deemed it a good match for me.” She had no choice in the matter. And she would have protested if she would have known what it would have meant to be put into that family. Kat soon skipped any talk of Cretheus and it seemed redundant to mention her children again. So, when she spoke again, she had skipped to the more recent events of her life. ”My husband passed almost a year ago from a long illness. My son is soon ten and will inherit the land soon.” Facts were easy to express. There was no emotion in her voice. Her husband had been a business contract and nothing more. She knew nothing of romance and love and wasn’t sure she was ever going to enjoy such luxuries.
”Meganea is a beautiful province situated among cliffs, but we find enough pasture to harbor nearly thirty mares and ten stallions.” While she was void of fine jewelry to decorate her body, the wealth was obvious by the amount of property and numerous animals her family had obtained. ”Being an only child, my father hesitantly passed down the family secrets of training. I quite like to ride, as I am sure you do as well, your highness.” And she was good at it. ”As my husband and brother-in-law always handled the business and I concern myself with the horses and household, I have only been to Vasiliadon a handful of times. It is a beautiful marvel to behold.”
She finally paused and watched the Queen’s expression. Was she supposed to go on about anything else? Aikaterine also wasn’t sure what the protocol for conversation was in this instance, was she too supposed to ask questions of Olympia? She had said they would get to know one another. That seemed to imply going back and forth. ”Did you grow up in the city?” Aikaterine had been holed up on the island where Meganea was her entire life, she knew very little of court gossip, who was good, who was bad… it was all far too unknown.

”Why if your husband has been gone for so long are you still unmarried? Surely your brother in law could have arranged a match for you.”
It wasn’t her most sensitive question, but she was curious as to what had led this woman with four children to abandon them on her estate with her brother in law and come here to Vasiliádon. Serving as her lady in waiting would allow for increased exposure to the court, and perhaps from there the possibilities of a good match would be increased. She had only experienced seven months of motherhood, none of it actually holding and raising her child, and yet already she couldn’t imagine having the ability to be parted from them for an uncertain time. Was it possible that Aikaterine didn’t fully understand the position she’d been given? That she would not have the freedoms now to simply wander as she would too and from her home island? Pia pursed her lips to keep in her remarks, pleased at least that the woman seemed to have no qualms taking the tea.
She hadn’t ever heard of most of the people or places her new maid was describing. Perhaps they had been outside of her sphere of her upbringing af their country home with the horses and in the city with court dates. With her service to the former queen she had brought herself high in visibility, not that the Leventi women didn’t always garner that sort of notice wherever they went. She had once been where Aikaterine sat, in service to the woman who was now her mother in law before she had caught Stephanos’ eye.
”It sounds quaint and...peaceful. I haven’t had days like that in a very long while.” Not since she had come to Vasiliádon to stay for good, serving the queen and socializing with her sisters as matches were made for all of them. The beauty of the city could not be denied, with the stunning views and the lush landscape. But the circus incident had truly signaled the end of her peace for good. Flashes of screams and the feeling of cold metal pressed to her throat invaded and she had to shake her head, lifting a hand to brush against the almost invisible scar that it had left behind. They had all come so close to death that day, it was incredible how far they had come.
”Yes. For the most part. My father’s estate in the country is where we spent summers, but winter was always in court. I began serving the queen as a lady in waiting when I was twenty three. I’ve been in the palace ever since.”
Pia shook herself free of the reverie, smiling sightly at how different her life was than the one that had been intended for her, but the smile was not one of entire ease. She had a husband who was not faithful to her, a pregnancy at risk, and according to the paranoia of her spouse a group of people who would happily see her dead considering her current state. Maybe it would have been better to wait. Let Theo take the brunt of this as Achilleas’ wife, the burden of heirs be placed on her. She could have been secreted away to give birth to her bastard, married off to some country lord like Aikaterine had been to live in the quiet. It would have driven her mad.

It’s complicated. That was the only reply that she really wanted to utter when the queen requested more information. She had never been so interrogated in her life. Although, that was an easy feat considering she had been kept at home for many years with little to no exposure to anything outside of Meganea. That type of answer wouldn’t suffice for Olympia, not if she was in the business of trying to please her majesty.
Aikaterine couldn’t help but take a long breath in to prepare to share some of the harder parts of her life. Olympia had asked and therefore she was going to give answers. ”Your majesty, my brother in law is not a good man. Though I have no proof, I am convinced he is wishing his own wife dead to marry me.” That was just one of the many theories that she could come up with considering the lack of movement towards suitors. Aikaterine was happy for the extra time with her children, especially her son. Her son was the man of the house in a mere two years and he would not get to come with her when she went. Women didn’t get to make those decisions.
”It is. I will miss it greatly.” The land, the relaxation, the horses, her children. Those were all the pieces of her life that she would miss. However, she was scared to return. Cretheus attacks were getting stronger each and every time. She didn’t want to be accessible if he somehow figured out a way to divorce his barren wife or if she came up dead. The palati was the safest place and she couldn’t thank Stephanos enough. But, how was she supposed to tell some regal queen her whole story? It wasn’t appropriate for passing conversation.
The country of Taengea was a magnificent place. She imagined that whatever province Olympia grew up in had the same scenery to offer that her own did. That was likely where the similarities between the ladies ended. While Kat wasn’t poor, she wasn’t a part of a house like Leventi. There were different expectations for the children born into prestigious positions like that. ”I am grateful for this opportunity, as I am sure that you were, your majesty.” She felt much less desirable than she had been when she was fourteen. Twenty-eight was no longer a spring chicken, though she was confident she had some childbearing years to offer a good man. A man to live out the rest of her days in love. It might have been foolish, but a girl could hope. ”My first husband, while of great wealth, was focused on business. It called him to the larger cities often. If I had my way, my next marriage would be entirely different.” She softly smiled as she thought through what it would be like now that Stephanos had shown her a completely different side of how men could act.
The thought of it taking two years was a bit daunting. Though Aikaterine wasn’t aiming for the king and she certainly wasn’t expecting anything that high when it came to her next marriage. All she asked was for someone who might actually care about her as a person, unlike the option waiting at home. Her lips parted to add. ”Are you comfortable? Can I retrieve something to eat or drink for you?” Aikaterine was hoping to be done talking about herself. She could see the merit in getting to know each other, but it didn’t make it any more bearable. Instead, she moved to stand up and be of service to the lady.

The revelation that this woman’s brother-in-law was less than kind drew Olympia’s sharp gaze to the new maid once again, this time lingering as she considered the reason why she had been sent to her. The king had sent Aikaterine to her, was it because he was privy to the abuse she was suffering? For a moment her heart softened at the thought that Stephanos would be so kind to another, keeping this nobody safe from harm, but then again as she looked at her pretty face Pia could feel the pangs of jealousy and fear. Would he do it simply to be kind? Or did he want something else as well. Had she already given in to him? Unless this creature was some sort of goddess herself it would be nearly impossible to resist.
”Well. How kind of his majesty to have taken an interest in you.” It was the best she could muster without the bitterness and fear in her voice leak through too much. Crossing her arms over her stomach, she drew her knees up as close as she could, making herself as small as possible as she stewed in her anxiety. He wouldn’t do that, not so soon after their argument, not unless he was finished with her for good. He wouldn’t be so cruel as to put one of his whores in her household. Her husband was not a faithful man, that much she was coming to grips with, but even he couldn’t be so cold and heartless as to put a mistress in charge of caring for his own wife and child.
She let the older woman talk, barely listening as the wind blew her hair about her face and swatting away the curls when they got too close to her eyes. There was a tale about her first husband, something about a new marriage and Pia pinched her eyes against tears that were welling up for no reason that she would allow herself to think of. It was all just the baby, the changes in her moods and the way it could swing. She was temperamental in the best of times but now with the addition of another soul’s feelings inside of her it was even more prone to tears or laughter at odd times.
”Indeed. I’m sure his majesty will find a fine...something for you.” Her gaze turned to the woman once more as she stood, awkwardly offering her service and Pia had to grit her teeth and look away once more before shaking her head. ”No. Thank you. I ought to return inside. Rest. Grow even more bored out of my mind and hope that perhaps one day my husband will remember I exist.” That last bit burst out as she swung her feet over the side of the chaise and struggled to her feet, and she could feel her cheeks burning at having shown that side of herself to the help. She was supposed to be regal, a queen, not a petulant girl not getting her way. But it was difficult to behave that way when all she felt was as if she was a terrified small child no one would embrace.

She knows. Aikaterine’s anxiety began to eat at her. It was getting the better of her as that next sentence flowed between them. She shook her head some, but eventually settled on a nod when her voice calmly and quietly responded. ”His majesty is far too kind. My children will benefit greatly from the increase in income and my prospect for marriage are much better. I hope for a swift match that Lord Cretheus is forced to sign off on as my kyrios..” The time away from Cretheus was just one more blessing to all this arrangement. Even if she weren’t sleeping with the King - this was like a dream for her. Course, she wasn’t exactly ready to give up that just now… which only afforded her to add. ”However, I am at your command, your highness. If you prefer my company, I’m happy to offer my knowledge and service until your birth.” Aikaterine had gone through five births. A miscarriage and four children. Miscarriages were common - though a whole nation hadn’t been looking at her belly.
She stopped as she felt as though she was talking far too much and perhaps out of turn. There were so many reasons to be at the palace and be in service to her majesty, it was hard to reign it in. They were all genuine - eye contact and tone had to be some reassurance that Aikaterine was here for more than just sleeping with her husband. She didn’t arrive in Vasiliadon to seduce the King. No matter what the end result had been, it wasn’t her goal.
It was also then that she saw the emotions overflowing. She knows. Aikaterine held her breath for a moment. It was some sort of attempt to look composed and put together. As if she was doing nothing wrong. Nothing to worry the queen. The next words didn’t do anything to comfort Kat. There was a loss for words while she stepped nearer to Olympia and extended a hand for her to take. The lady could only assume that for the sake of her safety the way they had gone inside would be the way they went back in.
”Your highness, you do exist. He spoke highly of you when appointing me to your station.” He barely said a word. And though Kat had made a promise not to lie - women who were pregnant were fragile. She could see the tears of sadness or maybe anger. ”Men are sometimes afraid and do not like to reveal weakness. They have no control as the baby grows inside the womb… they like control.” That was the truth. A truth she had learned from her own marriage. He had always been so angry when she was pregnant, so distant, as though just the site of her reminded him how none of what was left in making a baby could be controlled by him. It was done. What came out, boy or girl, and the health was the woman’s responsibility.

Olympia made no reply as Aikaterine spoke of the benefits of the position and what it would bring her and her children, nodding numbly along with the conversation instead until she finally moved to stand. It would drive her mad if she tried to decipher whether or not this maid was sleeping with her husband as well, and as had been made blatantly obvious a few nights prior any sort of over excitement or stress was not something she could handle. If she had to become stone to give birth to a healthy son and hope to win some of Stephanos' affection back from whoever held it now, she would do just that.
Taking the offered hand of help, the queen leaned heavily on the woman as they walked and made no reaction to her words until the promise that the king had spoken highly of her. Gaze once again narrowing sharply at Kat, she wanted to believe it was all the truth. That he had actually hired this mother of many to help care for her and get her through this first child so she could bring some triumph to the weakened crown. If he cared for her in such a way, even if he couldn't say it to her face that would mean so much more than he could ever imagine. It needed to be that idea that stuck in her head, she couldn't know or believe that he would be so horrible as to send her just a mistress to keep close.
For the first time since Aikaterine had entered her rooms, Pia smiled at her, albeit with a drawn and tired expression on the rest of her face. That was kind of her to say at the very least. Perhaps she could cling to that knowledge as well and pretend to herself that Stephanos was simply frustrated at his own lack of control at this point. It would be very much in character for him to wish to find a way to take charge of things happening even in her very womb.
"Thank you. I hope you are correct. There was a time I thought he loved me, or at least wanted me. But, he is king now. Kings take whatever they want." There was an obvious bitterness in her last statement though as she sank back down on her bed with a sigh and leaned against the pillows she tried to shake it off. Closing her eyes, Olympia gestured in the direction of several scrolls with one hand as the other lay across her stomach. "Pick one, read to me if you will. If my body can do nothing I might as well keep my mind occupied."
