It was rare that Alkaios found himself with such official business. It was rare that he ever had the need to visit the palace and even rarer that he be meeting with a member of the royal family, and yet that was the case today. He had reason to speak with Princess Xene of Mikaelidas - information had reached him that she would be interested in knowing some of the business of the three kingdoms, and he had that which might have appealed to her. His position made him privy to some of the more private matters in Taengea, most specifically within his own barony but that did not mean he couldn't provide her with anything else of value, especially given his recent connections. There was a question of morals, of course, but he didn't exactly see the move as unethical. Any secrets he bore were his own, after all, and he supposed a royal from his own kingdom (although not from the family who owned his own province) was entitled to be aware. Besides, Alkaios saw this as a possibility for moving himself further up in the world, an assumption playing in the back of his mind that proving so useful would earn some form of reward.
Unused to these visits to the palace as he was - the more exact etiquette of the occasion having been taught mostly to his brother - you could tell the awkwardness in his actions and the slightly alarmed stance in which he held himself, even though he had made an obvious effort to dress as well as he could for the meeting, almost as though to compensate for the fact that he was clearly out of his depth here. It likely wouldn't matter to the princess and she would be wearing something far more costly that made his outfit purely drab in comparison but it was a start. If all went well today, this would not be the first time he would be visiting the palace and, with further meetings, Alkaios was sure his level of confidence would increase.
"I'm seeking an audience with Princess Xene, if she is available," he informed the man who met him at the entrance, attempting to speak with as much pride as he could muster.

The words had been whispered softly under the slave's breath as she passed Xene. Word had come, already that someone was requesting her presence toward the entrance of the Palati. It wasn't unusual, honestly. Many people wanted to meet her, and some even had asked for an audience just to lend information that the Princess would file into the back of her mind for later.
Running her fingers through a few of her curls, she straightened her golden hair, brushing her fingers down the front of her soft pink chiton. A longtime favorite of hers. Her feet carried her swiftly from her rooms, leaving her guards in the dust. While the Palati had been shown to be entirely unsafe as of recently, Xene still couldn't seem to stick with them. They were slow at times. Too slow for the fast pacing of her days.
Besides, she didn't particularly care for the two of them. Xene simply couldn't find it in herself to trust them.
Blue eyes caught sight of the blonde man as Xene approached the entrance of the Palati. A familiar face, but not one she had necessarily spoken to in the past. Lifting an eyebrow, Xene waved her guards to a stop behind her, confident steps carrying her toward Alkaios and the man who had settled there to keep him from entering further. "You may go," she noted toward the man before Alkaios, her gaze flicking to the side in a second, silent, and more impressing order to leave the two of them be.
The first thing that the princess did was rake a calculating gaze down Alkaios' form, observing him and taking in the finery that he had clearly picked for this meeting. If she recalled, his career as a baron of Taengea had become recently. Something about his brother having passed rather suddenly. There had been gossip, and it had been enough for Xene to file away for later, should she have need for anything that might be used.
"Lord Alkaios," Xene greeted with extreme ease, lifting her chin slightly. Her hands had settled before her, her shoulders back and her head high. For such a tiny woman, the princess had a commanding, confident air about her. As if she wasn't going to be one to muddle words or give him too long to make his case. "I've been told that you seek to speak with me," she noted, turning her body slightly and motioning him deeper inside of the Palati.
The princess would lead him to the gardens where they could speak with fewer possible individuals around. Besides, her guards could then keep a view of her form the distance without being close enough to hear the words spoken. "Shall we?"

It had not been long to wait before the Princess had appeared, something for which Alkaios was admittedly substantially thankful. There was a certain awkwardness in a long wait, an implication that his host had no interest in what he had to say and his visit was for nought. For someone as new to his position as he was, it would have been nothing short of humiliating. One hardly wanted to be seen as so incompetent that he was unable to obtain a simple audience with a member of the ruling family (and, given how recently he had come about his barony, he was doubly concerned with looking qualified).
He bowed slightly in response to her greeting, noting the presence she commanded. Another man might have been nervous in this situation, but he had always been self-assured, bold enough that these formal meetings came more efficiently without making him appear arrogant. It was a necessity when it came to all the rumours surrounding him - however true they might have been - keeping him from accidentally revealing anything through appearing too put out. "Yes, I requested an audience with your Highness as I came to understand you might be interested in the information I can offer." It was nothing specific, but he imagined that, if Alkaios could provide her with a steady enough source of outside knowledge, there would be some use in it. People did usually have some gratitude for those who were more diverse.
They moved through the halls of the impressive building with the few guards who followed them, eventually coming to a stop in the gardens. It seemed a wise choice; fewer people were likely to listen in to a conversation if it took place in a garden over an official meeting room. Things appeared less suspicious. Waiting for Princess Xene to indicate whether she wished to sit or stand before he copied those actions, nodding at her request that he begin. "I am unsure what I might be able to provide for you at present, but I thought I might express my value - I have some family in Colchis, I am capable of gathering information from abroad, if that would be of use to you. If there is anything I could aid you with..."

The walk into the gardens was almost lazy. As if she were meeting with the newly minted baron just for the sake of pleasure. Of visiting with someone she had not had the chance to learn about and appreciate. This, too, was an exercise in information gathering. Knowing both her allies and her enemies in equal measure. She was an amateur sleuth, but she was making her attempt at helping her brother in any way that she could. Starting with finding people they could and could not rely on.
And the way that the young baron spoke? She may have just found a reasonable voice to listen to.
As they strode into the gardens, Xene lead him to the fountain in the center and settled at the edge. Waiting for him to join her, the princess settled her hands into her lap, listening to Alkaios speak in hushed tones that would make it difficult for anyone passing through to hear. "How did you come to understand that I was looking for information?" Xene asked at first, silently wondering which of her little birds had put out the call for her in recent days. Not that she would deny a man who was so forthcoming with his intentions to help her.
Xene pretended to enjoy the breeze that passed over the gardens, feeling the soft mist of the water that dribbled from the fountain behind them. Pressing her golden curls over her shoulder, her gaze drifted to him with ease as he continued on. The offer was... generous and something she hadn't realized that she might need until the offer was presented to her. "Family in Colchis, information from abroad," she murmured, twisting her body to better face him.
"I appreciate your offer, Lord Alkaios," Xene started, debating her words carefully, "But I am most interested in how you intend to safeguard yourself and your information from prying eyes and ears. How do you plan to deal with information that falls into the wrong hands should your safeguards fail?" she questioned easily, deciding that it might be better to get right down to business. There was much on her mind, much she was intent on figuring out.
If she could know for certainty that her confidants were going to be safe about their trails of information, their letters, and what they actually divulge to others, then she would be more inclined to accept an offer such as this.
A generous offer. One that Xene might find herself remiss to have refused if she didn't take it. But she needed to be sure, first and foremost, that she, her confidants, and her family would remain safe amidst her information gathering endeavors.
