Semiramis felt out of place. She had been wandering the stalls food was good, but she was tired. People were loud and rowdy. She regretted having come. What was she thinking? With every pang of regret she felt the noise seemed to be getting worse. Her stomach rumbled. An odd squishing sound came to her ears. She stopped walking. Her stomach roared even louder. The squishing sound came again. It sounded odd among the chattering of the people and the chimes and random cacophony of the town. It was small and soft and abrupt. Something like.. a child. She looked down to see a small boy giggling at her. As if on queue her stomach quacked again. He giggled some more.
Semiramis turned a bit briskly. Semiramis figured it was time to head home.. “Well that was embarrassing.” She turned and walked briskly across the market place. She had only walked a few meters, and barely missed colliding with someone. She pivoted on her heel. The cap of her cape swung off with the force as she reached out her right hand and managed to grab the other person from their elbow to keep them from falling. “I am so-so sorry!” Way to go! You almost embarrass yourself and someone else too.
“I am-“ she gapped. “Zosime?” There was no mistaking it. Zosime looked like if the sun had drenched her in it’s light. Her hair looked like small rivers of gold. Gosh she was beautiful. Zosime was always this way. Semiramis face turned into a smile.
“How long has it been?”

“How long has it been?”
Gods above, she hated Midas.
The crowds, the smells, the people -- all of it rankled her more than she cared to admit. Her lip was curled up in a sneer as she rolled her eyes, holding out the thin material to one of the merchants. He was yelling because she had insulted the quality of his wares, but he had to know that the “fine silk” he was selling felt like desert sand in the crotch.
”Look, I’m just telling you that it’s worth half of what you’re asking.” She snaps, throwing the silk back in his face. ”It’s poorly dyed, poorly crafted. If you can’t recognize that, you are in the wrong business.” She turned on her heel, adjusting the cloth of her military garb. The merchant continued to yell as she left but she did not care. She was not going to pay for something so obviously poor quality.
Her coin purse was heavy from months of saving, and she had wanted to stop in Midas for gifts for her family before she traveled to Lyncaea to visit. She always tried to do that, it was her way of making up to them for being away for so long. And to reassure them that she had not disappeared like her brother had. Zosi glanced away for a moment, thoughts of her twin clouding her judgement and then she was colliding with someone. They both reached out to steady the other, and Zosi -- unsure of who was at fault -- was about to apologize.
Another voice spoke over her own, familiar -- if vague. Her blue gaze swung up to meet the dark eyes of another, the female in front of her…
Semiramis.
Her eyebrows rose in surprise to see the soldier. It had been years since she had seen the other woman, even more since the last time they’d served on a battlefield together. Zosi could not stop the smile that spread across her features as they both straightened up. ”Gods girl, it is good to see you again.” Zosi replied, clapping the other woman on the back.
”It’s been too long, where have you been hiding all this time?” The archer said, gesturing with a nod of her head to a place out of the thick of the crowd. ”You look well...which means that you’ve managed to keep yourself out of trouble.”

Whatever Semiramis had been thinking about faded out of her mind like campfire smoke. She stumbled forward startled at the clap on the back. This was classic Zosime. Semiramis grinned in recognition.
"I didn't imagine I'd find you here, in Midas of all places." It had been years. Semiramis memories flitted through her mind in seconds. She recalled the battle and the months after the battle. “Your right it has been years,” she paused. It all felt like it was just all just happened yesterday. She felt a pang in her chest. "I have been around. Mostly near Midas." Semiramis eyes wandered in the direction where Zosime was gesturing to. It was farther from the noise, chatter and smells of the market.
"What about you where have you been?" Semiramis followed along. It was better to stand out of the way of oncoming foot traffic. They wouldn't be bumping into people who were running into the winding road. Trouble? Semiramis had never thought about it that way. But if training new archers, was keeping out of trouble, then of course she was doing a great job. "I guess you can say I have been," Semiramis responded once they were out of earshot. Her lips stretched from ear to ear. "Or at least I am trying to." She giggled slightly. “I have been training new recruits,” she added. “Trying to get them to improve their aim. I haven’t been doing much else.” “What about you what have you been up to?"
Semiramis turned to look at Zosime. "You don't look so bad yourself. I take it back you look like you haven’t aged. You look exactly the same, I bet you have also stayed out of trouble too.” Semiramis looked to the side of the road there was no place to sit. What were they expecting people to do, ride on horseback everywhere? “Walk with me. We should find a place to sit and talk.”

A low laugh left her lips, as her shoulders heaved in a shrug. ”Midas is an inevitable part of life, unfortunately. I’d avoid the city like the plague if I could.” She said. It was true, she preferred the stillness of the wilderness -- but being a soldier, and so close to the Lieutenant, she was rarely afforded such opportunity. She was actually overdue for a visit to Lyncaea to visit her family. She was sure that her mother had to be worried about her, as she often did when she went too long without so much as a letter.
She wondered how much the younger children had grown. Antonia had to be getting close to the age where she could join the military, perhaps Zosime would bring her sister back with her this time. The girl begged her every time, but with the potential for war brewing on the horizon...Zosi had sought to spare her younger sister the trial by fire that she had experienced in the first war.
She laughed again, drawn back into the conversation and away from thoughts of her sister. ”That would explain why I haven’t seen you. Midas is a large place, and like I said...I don’t like to visit.” Zosime clapped Semiramis’ shoulder in a familiar gesture. ”Molossia keeps me busy. I’ve been acting as Phaedra’s second for a few years now, although the unit could practically run itself.” It was true, the unit was a tight thing. It hardly needed her guidance. There had been talk of Zosime going off on her own, taking up the mantle of the female archer unit lead in her home province but she rather liked not having to bow and scrape like Phaedra had to do.
She much preferred not having to pull her punches.
”Of course, my friend. Lead the way.” Zosime said, gesturing for Semiramis to lead them on. She had no love for the drink, but she wouldn’t begrudge her friend for partaking if they ended up in a tavern or the like. ”Haha, you must have me confused for another.” The woman said with a feral grin. ”Trouble tends to follow me everywhere. I have no idea how the Gods have not seen fit to strike me down. They must enjoy my antics.”
