Knowing what she would be doing that evening, it had been difficult for Imma to get through the day. Anticipation shimmered through her body and mind and she was uncharacteristically absentminded, not paying attention what was said to her and having to ask for it to be repeated. She had even run into a few pieces of furniture. It almost seemed as if they had placed themselves in her way just to trip her up, although that notion was quite silly.
She had been distracted ever since she had met Lord Nikos only three days ago. The youngest Leventi girl knew now why her cousin had fallen in love with him. He was utterly charming but she had been warned about his lascivious ways and she believed that she would be able to resist him. Imma still planned on doing as she had promised Evie … to enchant him and then dump him so fast that his head would spin. It was the perfect revenge for what he had done to her cousin. He seemed to like her already.
And she liked him. She loved the way he treated her as if she was the most important person in the world and how his intense blue eyes roamed over her body. He made her feel beautiful and desirable. He was so undeniably appealing. Lord Nikos was the first man she had ever flirted with and he had teased her right back. Imma would be lying if she said that she wasn’t attracted to him. He probably just wanted to use her the way he had used Evie, but sometimes she imagined that he truly fancied her.
Finally the sun sank below the horizon. The house was quiet and she didn’t think she would have any trouble slipping away. Her parents and sisters would never believe that quiet little Imma would do such a thing. Quiet little Imma never got into mischief. She was sweet and obedient. They would think she was in her room, reading or drawing like she usually did.
She dressed for the occasion in a cornflower blue peplos, fastened at the shoulders with sapphire fibulae. A sash of iridescent silk crossed over her torso, emphasizing her full bosom and wrapped around her tiny waist. Her jewelry consisted of silver and sapphires and included a necklace, arm bands, and earrings. Because she couldn’t alert a maidservant to her plans, she had to dress herself and braid her long platinum hair, which fell over one shoulder and was tied at the end with a blue ribbon. Her silver sandals laced up her calves.
Looking in her mirror, she liked what she saw. Hopefully, Lord Nikos would too. It was a bit fancy for a chariot riding lesson, but she wanted to impress him with her appearance and fashion sense. This outfit was not nearly as revealing the one she had worn three days ago, but it still showed the perfection of her hourglass figure.
As she had surmised, leaving the manor was surprisingly easy. The moon was full and bright, bathing her surroundings in a silver glow that seemed almost magical. Imma kept to the shadows as she walked to the arena so that she wouldn’t attract any unwanted attention. Young noblewomen didn’t usually go out alone at night.
It was just her luck that two rough-looking men spotted her as she passed them and began to follow her. Pretending she didn’t see them, she started walking a bit faster. So did they and their strides were longer than hers. Taking a deep breath, she broke into a run, darting toward the arena as fast as she could. The men pursued her, gaining on her quickly. They were almost upon her when she sped inside, dashing through the darkness and up the steps to the seats where she lay down and flattened herself between two rows.
She could hear their sandals slapping against the ground ”We know you’re here,” one of them called. His voice echoed menacingly throughout the cavernous space. ”If you come out now, we won’t hurt you. If we have to search for you, you will not fare so well."
Imma lay where she was, trying to breathe shallowly and calm her frantic heart With any luck, Lord Nikos would show up and scare the thugs away before they found her.

Since the morning Evangelina had arranged for her cousin to be so formally introduced to Nikos, he’d found himself a bit distracted. There were several thoughts going through his mind, namely why would Evie introduce him to Imma like that – and with such a warning as ‘if you break this Leventi, you buy her.’ Telling Nikos that he couldn’t have something only proved to make him crave it; Imma had indeed looked the part of a sweet dish that he’d like to taste, wearing such a revealing peplos as she had that day. He chewed on his lower lips as he remembered how the young Leventi had looked in the morning light, sun glinting off her golden hair. Then for her to ask him for private, and secret, chariot driving lessons.
Yes, Nikos was indeed distracted. Especially today, as he was to meet with Imma that night at the arena. Perhaps he shouldn’t go? The temptation to ‘taint’ Imma, as Evie had put it, would be great as he would actually be alone with her tonight. But no… if the girl went running to her cousin and ratted him out for standing her up. Well, Evie would never let him hear the end of it, he knew. Best that he held the date. It was with this thought in mind, that Nikos rode out for the arena. He’d instructed his servants to get his racing team and his chariot to the arena earlier that day, but for the attendants to leave before dark.
Now, Nik trotted his black stallion, Frixos, through the streets of Vasilidon towards the arena. As he neared, he saw that the gate was already open. A confident smirk lifted one corner of his lips. Imma was already here. Excellent. He urged his steed through the gate, but quickly pulled up short as he heard male voices carrying through the darkness.
’…If we have to search for you, you will not fare well.’
The Condos lord’s brows pinched together as he mentally sorted out what was happening here. Given the late hour, and the fact that the arena was still closed to the general public, there shouldn’t have been anyone here except himself and … Imma. They must have seen the young Leventi enter the arena, possibly even followed her here! A surge of anger course through him at the continuing lewd and threatening calls of the men. No. Not men. Lowlifes, peasants that get a kick from terrorizing those they think can’t defend themselves. Nikos narrowed his eyes as a familiar feeling of possessiveness joined the rising anger; Nik had always had a hard time sharing anything he set his mind to having. He hadn’t even realized the notion of Imma Leventi being among such things had really even crossed his mind.
”Yah!” Nik’s voice boomed, even as he kicked his heels Frixos’ flanks and took the slack out of the reins. He raced his black steed towards the sound of the thugs’ voices, galloping at full speed and leaning forward, low in the saddle. He meant to run them straight down, to allow his mount’s hooves to stomp the petulant pair into the ground like the dung that they obviously were. As soon as he was close enough to make out the two of them, Nik steered Frixos directly towards the closest one. The angered baron could see the man on the ground scrambling to get out of the way. ”Do you find pleasure in terrorizing women? Stand still, man, so that I can return the favor!” Nik’s growling threat was met with a panicked, ’We meant nothing by it!’ An obvious lie. Nik didn’t let up the chase until the first man was running flat out for the gate, verily tripping over his own feet as he scrambled across the packed sands.
Nikos wheeled Frixos about and scanned the moonlit arena for the other man. He spotted the thug climbing in the stands, obviously more angered by the interruption, rather than frightened as his spineless partner had been. Too, the lowlife seemed to still be searching for something – someone. Imma must have hidden from her pursuers. Perhaps he was hoping to find the girl and slip out before Nikos could stop them.
Nik kicked his mount into a full racing gallop across the wide expanse. But could he get to the stands before the thug found the Leventi lady?

Imma crouched in the foot space between the two rows of benches, her eyes shut tight. The thugs were finished with threatening her. Now they were describing in vivid detail the indecent things they planned to do to her once they found her. She had believed that they only wished to rob her, but they desired her more than her valuables. How she wished she could cover her ears and block out their lewd comments, but then she would not be able to hear them if they came too close to her hiding place.
Her body was shaking convulsively and she found it difficult to breathe. Imma didn’t want to be raped. Nobody would want to marry her then. Her reputation would be completely ruined and all hopes of marrying as well as her sisters would be dashed forever. Not that it would matter much, because if those thugs had their way with her, she would most likely go mad. The rest of her life would be spend huddled in a corner, rocking back and forth and drooling.
For the first time in her life, she wished that she was ugly. She wouldn’t be in this situation if she wasn’t pleasing to look at. Maybe she would have lost her jewelry, but she would still be a maiden and her sanity would be intact.
Maybe Lord Nikos isn’t coming, Imma thought. Maybe he changed his mind about teaching me to race. I can’t wait for him to save me. I’m going to have to find a way to save myself. Her resolve provided an outlet to her terror though her heart beat frantically and she knew she was still in grave danger of being sexually assaulted.
I can do this. I can do this. Straightening her arms, she peeked over the row of seats she was hiding behind, but she couldn’t see much in the darkness.
Her courage plummeted, And then she heard the rush of hoofbeats and Nikos’ booming voice. He would rescue her. She saw a blur hurtling past the stands and heard the sound of sandals scrabbling backwards. He had found them and was about to give them a bit of their own medicine. One of them ran away, but where was the other?
The second thug was climbing the stands and he was far too close for comfort. He would be on her before Lord Nikos would be able to get to her. Slipping from her hiding place, Imma eased out into the aisle and down the wide steps to the railing overlooking the arena. Standing up, she shouted: “Come and get me!” She felt braver now that Nikos was here and she wanted to show him that she was no damsel in distress.
The shadow moved in her direction. She crouched down again. As soon as she could make out the man’s rough features, she rose, ran toward him, and kicked him in the balls. With a high-pitched shriek, he reeled back and fell over the railing.
Now that they were gone, reaction set in and Imma felt as if she were about to tumble over the railing too. Clutching it so tightly that her knuckles turned white, she leaned over it. “Lord Nikos!” Her voice trembled. “I’m over here!”

’Come and get me!’
Nikos heard Imma’s voice cry out, beckoning to her pursuer to… pursue her. He clenched his jaw, and kicked his mount’s flanks to spur the horse on faster. What was she doing? She should have stayed hidden. Or ran. Not called the damn thug to her! Just as Nikos was nearing the stands, he saw by the light of the full moon, a feminine form that could only be Imma rise up and kick out at the man after her. The thug went tumbling backwards, clutching a delicate part of his anatomy. Nikos winced in brief sympathy for the pain the other man was feeling… but only briefly. He jerked on Frixos’ reins, making the stallion rear back and come down again hard, dangerously close to the man now rolling in the dirt. Panicked and obviously deciding the hunt was too much trouble, the guy managed to scramble to his feet and took off in the same direction his companion had moments before.
’Lord Nikos! I’m over here!’
The baron dismounted his steed and quickly tied off the reins on the rail. The horse was restless from all the excitement, and Nikos wasn’t confident the animal wouldn’t bolt just then. Having done that, the Condos lord bounded up the few steps to reach the Leventi Lady. ”Lady Imma…. Are you alright?” he asked with some concern in his tone. Nik gripped her by the upper arms, though his grip was light, and let his gaze roam her over, looking for injuries, before lifting to meet her wide eyes. ”I apologize for my tardiness. Had I known…” he sighed heavily, lifting one hand to cup her face – a gesture that was much more intimate than what their acquaintanceship would have normally called for. But Nik was ever a charmer, ever an opportunist when it came to dealing with woman… flattery, flirting, and undivided attention. He’d come to her rescue just now, and Nik knew that many a young woman would swoon as such chivalry. Would Imma of Leventi be one of those young women? ”You’re safe now. That’s what matters,” he said softly, letting a sound of relief into his tone. He was relieved she appeared unharmed, but it didn’t hurt to lay it on thick for her sake.

Lord Nikos reached Imma just as the thug tumbled over the railing. His horse reared and for a moment, she thought he was going to trample the man to death. He deserved it, certainly, and if he was dead, he wouldn’t be able to prey on other young women. But she didn’t believe that the baron was a cold-blooded killer and he proved it when his horse stomped near the ruffian instead of on top of him. The man leapt to his feet and fled to the gates after his companion. There would be no more trouble from them tonight.
It was only as she watched the dust kicked up by his hasty retreat that she realized how stupid she had been. So many things could have gone wrong. It was sheer luck that her knee connected with his gonads. If she had not artistically studied nude statues, Imma would have had no idea that they existed or where they were. What if she had missed? He probably had a knife with him. He could have grabbed her, held the knife to her throat, and forced Lord Nikos to let him leave with her. Or he would have just killed her there and then.
She should have run to a safer place and let Lord Nikos deal with the thug. Though he had been too far away to physically harm him, he could have thrown something at him or startled him for the moment or two it would have taken him to get to the area of the stands where she was hiding. Imma didn’t think she was cut out to be a hero. Maybe it would be better to see herself as a damsel in distress. She had to admit the notion of being rescued by a handsome man was immensely appealing.
And yet … however foolish she had been … she was proud of herself for standing up to the thug instead of cowering in fear.
Her entire body was trembling by the time Lord Nikos reached her and asked if she was all right. She heard genuine concern in his voice. Was he only worried because Evie would kill him if something happened to her, or had she truly enchanted him on the day they had met? He had definitely made a lasting impression on her.
Imma let go of the railing and turned toward him. Lord Nikos gripped her upper arms lightly. His hands were warm on her bare skin and she realized how very cold she was. “I’m … I’m fine,” she said softly, His gaze was warm as well, and it instantly banished the chill from her bones.
His mesmerizing blue eyes moved to her face, and she shook her head when he apologized. Imma’s lips parted to tell him that she’d had no idea what was going to happen either, but her words were forgotten when he cupped her face. His gentle touch awakened feelings inside her that she had never felt before, new and exciting sensations that left her longing for something she didn’t understand. She leaned slightly into his hand, closing her eyes to savor his caress. Yes, she was safe now. She would always be safe with him.
Opening her eyes, she favored Lord Nikos with a grateful but coquettish smile. “I got in a lucky kick, but he would have come back for me if you hadn’t scared him away. I owe you my life, Lord Nikos. I will be in your debt forever.”

His tongue ran along his lower lip, and a smirk – charming yet confident – grazed the lord’s features when Imma leaned into his touch and closed her eyes. He let his thumb caress lightly along her cheekbone. She was beautiful. Young, petite. Golden locks framing her round fair face reflected the moonlight in a way that made her hair appear to be glowing. If she were anyone besides a Leventi, anyone besides the very cousin that Evie had warned him not to touch, he would be making a move on her right about now. She was vulnerable, looking for comfort. Nikos’ specialty when seducing a new lover, offering them the one thing they craved… attention.
Imma opened her eyes and looked up at him with those brown orbs that were not very unlike that of her willful older cousin. Her words pleased him, no doubt, because that meant she was enchanted by him. And that smile she offered him. Nik certainly enjoyed seeing that look on her face. ”My lady… you owe me nothing. I couldn’t very well let those men mar your beauty. That would make me no better than them. I am only grateful that I arrived in time…” He licked his lips and glanced towards his horse. ”I would hate to cut our night short… but would you like me to escort you back home?” He searched her eyes in the dim light of the full moon. He mentally willed her to insist they continue with their plans. He’d been looking forward to spending a few hours alone with her. After the way she’d dressed at their last meeting, and the obvious flirting that had ensued… Nikos was more than a little intrigued, despite Evie’s warnings against such things. ”Whatever you wish, Imma,” he whispered, a hint of seduction in his smooth tone.

Imma gasped softly when she felt Lord Nikos gently caress her cheek. Instinctively, her long slender neck arched so that her face was tilted slightly upwards. A soft smile graced her full lips. That longing within her intensified, scaring her and exciting her at the same time. What is wrong with me? I have never felt like this before. What is it about this man that fascinates me so?
As yet, her question had no answer. She felt as if her body knew something that her mind did not and she looked forward to solving the intriguing mystery that was the handsome and charming Nikos of Condos. How else could she win his heart so that she could dump him just like he had done to Evie?
That thought doused the little flames that were dancing through her small form. She had promised her cousin that she would make him pay, and she intended to follow through with it. And yet … she loved the way he made her feel. Evie had said he had the morals of a toad. Perhaps he was playing the same game she was. I must make sure I do not fall under his spell.
That, she already knew, was going to be harder than it sounded.
For the way he licked his lips made her heart soar and her body tremble. Until he brought it up gain, Imma had nearly forgotten the mortal danger she had just been in. What did it matter anymore? It was over and she was safe and so close to Nikos that she fancied she could hear his heart beat.
She shook her head when he asked if she wanted him to take her home. There was absolutely no way she wanted to curtail this forbidden excursion. Imma wanted to learn to race a chariot (nearly) as much as she wanted to spend time with the enchanting baron. If Selene had won a chariot race, then why couldn’t she, especially if she was taught by the best?
He dropped the honorific just as he had on their last meeting. This time, the way he said her name was like an audible caress. “No, I don’t want to go home,” she said, grinning impishly. “I want to learn how to race a chariot so I can give you a run for your money when the arena opens up again."

’No, I don’t want to go home.’
Oh, that impish smile she gave him was enough to make him want to kiss to delectable lips. But he’d promised Evie he would not touch this Leventi girl. But Imma was making it difficult to keep to such a promise. Why had Evangelina even insisted on his giving his word on the matter? Especially when Imma so obviously wanted to gain his attention? Keeping his word was not going to be easy for the baron, if Imma kept up the not so subtle hints of interest in him.
’I want to learn how to race a chariot so I can give you a run for your money when the arena opens up again.’
Nik smiled widely, a low laugh bubbling up as he nodded his assent to her request. ”Excellent.” She wasn’t giving in to any fears the attack may have conjured. She was a strong young woman. A fiery will, just like her older cousin. That seemed to be something that the Leventi women seemed to have in common, and a trait that rather quite the turn on for Nikos. Briefly, Nik wondered if his father knew this and was the reason the older Condos lord had always warned his son away from the Leventis. Surely not – not to mention his father knowing his whims as such was rather disturbing. Nik shoved the thought away and refocused on the moment at hand. ”Come on. My chariot should be hitched and ready behind that gate.” He nodded towards the gate at the back of the arena that led to the staging area for racers.
He slyly took her hand in his and carefully led the way down the stands in the dark, and across the arena to the staging area. He left Frixos tethered where he was, the steed not being a racing horse and all. Nik left the gate wide open and they found his chariot already hitched to a magnificent racing team of two. Nik greeted the horses, rubbing their strong necks and feeding each a carrot from a belt pouch. Then the baron moved to the back of the chariot and stepped up into it. He turned to Imma and extended a hand to her, ”Come on. Take the reins. I’ll guide you the whole way.” He smirked confidently, warmly, his blue eyes sparking with the anticipation of this ‘lesson.’
