She was in pain. Not her skin but her back. Her legs ached. But surrender was not an option. No.. She was not having it. She took another step. She felt like something big and sharp instantly ran up the middle of her left leg. Her mouth opened as a soundless gasp escaped her lips. She knew her legs would hurt a bit due to her injuries. But this was not the time to quit.
She grunted then took another step. Then another, she was almost there. She was almost there. She could hear the waves. After a few minutes of heaving and grunting. She made it to the shore. She still had to walk further if she wanted to feel water at her feet but she was already there. At the beach. The misty droplets of saltwater breeze hitting her face. The smell of the ocean. Now the beach she could handle. Boats not so much.
She took the liberty to remove her sandals. Gasping and grunting as she bent down to remove them. Her wounds on her back and tummy were all sealed up but they were still healing. Finally untied the strap. She gripped the staff and tried to sit herself on the ground, she couldn't plop down like she used to because her back was still healing. Allow herself to drop onto the sand would be a stupid idea. She managed to slowly sit down. She set the wooden staff next to her. She laughed even if it hurt.
"Ha! I couldn't make it to the beach... I sure showed him!" She said to herself. She pulled a delectable looking fig out of her purse. "Hey Captain! I am sitting on the beach and about to eat a apple! You better come out and stop me!" She knew her Captain couldn't hear her from there. She was just amusing herself. Her laugh was stiffled short by the pain that shot through her back like knives, with every chuckling breath she took. It definitely hurt to laugh. She ended her laugh coughing instead.
She took normal breaths through her nose and the pain stopped. It felt good to have her feet in the glittery sand. She shifted on her buttox despite the pain on her back each time she shifted, she tried to move close enough to feel the chilly water nip at her toes. Ahhhh... this felt good. The wet sand was so soothing.
If she didn't know any better she could sleep here. On the beach.
She was in the middle of these musings when she noticed a figure a few meters away. She seemed like a young girl. Walking aimlessly.
Semiramis turned her attention to the waves again, and she then bit into her piece of fruit, the juice lightly dripping from her lip. She licked her lips to keep the juice from trailing down her chin. Ahh... it doesn't get any better than this does it..

One saving grace did not serve to break the mould that Alector of Athenia placed her in.
While the newly-born Anastasia still reveled in the echoes of pleasure that the Harimtu, Euterpe, provided her with, and the resolution of change that followed... it wasn't enough. Calliope did not see herself as Anastasia. At the edges of her imagination, she could conjure the vision she wanted, the transformation she craved in the ardent hope...
If I can become the phoenix, I can burn away the past...
If I can become like Euterpe, I would have the strength to absolve myself of this...
But, the abyss she'd fallen into was not so easily climbed out of. With clipped wings, the phoenix could not fly, and there was no sight beyond the darkness that she'd been encapsulated by. Calliope did not want, for she'd secured herself a modest sum before she'd left her husband. She did not struggle in the physical realm, but as Morpheous captured her when, at last, sleep was forced upon her body... the nightmares plagued her.
Come to me, Calliope.
A chilling voice that sounded beyond the tides of the ocean in front of her, an echo of just weeks before. She remembered being filled by him, recalled the spill of the tonic as a servant handed it to her with trembling hands. Life wouldn't move on so simply, and despite being weeks of sailing away from Athenia and the merchant who might've thought her dead... the vestiges of his influence remained.
"Ha! I couldn't make it to the beach... I sure showed him!"
Immediately, the voice lulled Calliope out of the toxic verity that sought to ensnare her.
"Hey captain! I am sitting on the beach and about to eat an apple! You better come out and stop me!"
Calliope couldn't help it. The lull silenced, the echo of Alector dissipating from the periphery of her vision when, at last, she turned around to catch sight of her saviour.
And that's what she was. Simple distraction could be served to lull her away, but she refused to find a means to distract herself again. The Harimtu was bound to her temple, and too many offerings would quickly diminish the refugee's sums. No, she had to heal on her own, without relying on the exquisite touch of a woman with better things to do. Calliope turned away from the tides that she'd ceased looking at, from the sands that continued to reflect that aged face creased with lascivious and nefarious intentions.
Calliope rose from her spot, to take several steps with little intention as to where she was going. To approach the woman might be seen as rude. She seemed at peace, utterly enraptured in the fruit she was eating and whatever victory it was that arriving at the beach brought with it. But, she was compelled.
Confidence like that is infectious, isn't it?
She remembered hearing that, but she'd not seen confidence in years. Arrogance, brutishness, abuse. But true, shimmering confidence? It was difficult to imagine until it was brandished like a blade in front of her. So, Calliope decided to approach. She settled on the sands, a respectable distance away. A timid gaze flickered from the tides to the woman, and she could see the slightest of trembles, a sign of pain covered by a façade of... bravado? Self-assurance?
Unaware of the intricacies of Colchis and how their women were allowed to serve, she had no idea how she could have injured herself, and it certainly wasn't her place to ask. So, she offered a faltering smile, hazel eyes capturing the woman's features next.
She's beautiful.
She felt the tick of her heart in her chest, a lifelong fascination stirred by Euterpe only becoming more and more pronounced as of late. But, Calliope let it languish in shadow.
"You look like you're having a grand time!" she said, with an overtly false cheeriness in her tone. The smile withered away, and she looked down to the sands, next.
"Would it trouble you if I joined you? My name is C- Ana."

Semiramis smiled. The sea water smell was strong but what she enjoyed more was the cooling mist that seemed to lightly sprinkle her face. She was halfway through finishing her fruit, she could feel her stomach settling with relief.
Semiramis turned her attention briefly to see the girl walking away from the waves. This was the life..
It was soothing. The waters sweeping forward and back. To and fro, the formations of the waves repeating an endless noise of crashing and pattern. The sound of water breaking. But a beautiful pattern. It was too beautiful. It could never be boring. And it is going to look even more glorious in the evening when the sun is to set.. she thought.
Her eyes got a look to them, like when you are looking at something far far away. Semiramis head jerked out of her trance when a voice traveled in her direction. She looked up.
"Oh." It was the girl from earlier, only this time she was closer. Semiramis was surprised. She looked awful young. "I am having a great time." She smiled.
Was she sad or nervous? The smile at the beginning was a contradiction. Semiramis wasn't sure. But she wasn't going to ask. "It's no trouble, you can join me." Semiramis patted the sand motioning for her to sit next to her.
Semiramis looked at her. She couldn't put her finger on it, but the demeanor couldn't be ignored. She almost forgot to tell the girl her own name. "My name is Semiramis of Laconia," she offered a hand. "It is good to meet you."
She still kept her eyes on Ana. "Would you like an apple or plum?" Semiramis extended a hand with both fruits. She felt it would be rude to continue eating and not offer Ana a bite.
It was odd but a curious occurrence. Normally a stranger wouldn't approach her at all. Unless it was to ask for directions. Semiramis sat still and stared at the waves, while she waited for Ana to sit.
She turned her attention to Ana again, with inquisitive eyes. The girl was thin but with exquisite features. Interesting.. Semiramis wondered. She decided to start with easy questions. Ana probably wanted to talk to someone, and she happened to be the only person on the beach. Semiramis took another plum out of her bag.
"So Ana what brings you to this part of the beach?" She asked before biting into the plum.

It'd been so long since Anastasia met up with someone so... bright. Calliope thought on it, and considered Iris, but... it didn't fit. Possessed of a noble nature and prone to charity wasn't the same as this. In her mind's eye, Calliope could see a shimmer around this one, the sort of presence of unfettered enjoyment of the moment. Was it possible, to be present like that? She had to stop herself, from letting her jaw drop completely, but in the process, her lips did curve into a more genuine smile. Sullen, uncertain, it seemed that right away Semiramis had an influence.
Please...
She wanted that more than anything. To forget herself, to find reality withering away and giving into a fantasy. Anastasia. She'd not yet used the name aloud, shortening it to Ana. It was just... easier that way, to see the light of a new age when the goal wasn't quite so high. Ignoring the sentiments that wedged these conflicts, the young Calliope made her way to the ground next to Semiramis.
Calliope's gaze didn't linger for long, letting the tide naturally lure her gaze there, but she did flicker back to the woman a lot. When she spoke, she followed her lips, nodding when she introduced herself.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Semiramis," she replied, extending a shaky hand to meet hers. She held on for but a moment before pulling back in time for the woman to offer her a fruit. She took the apple with a grateful smile, then shifted back into place. She didn't break the silence that settled between them, simply content to... be there. Her head tipped back, one hand settled in the sand to balance her position as she brought the apple to her lips. Her gaze directed towards the sky, just as Semiramis distracted her with her question. She nearly choked, the unexpected question making her swallow in an effort to answer. With a cough, she hacked out a piece of apple that'd gone down the wrong pipe.
"Ooof. I'm sorry. Anyway, uh... I'm not sure, really," she admitted, glancing back towards the ocean before she elaborated,
"I've just been wandering. Colchis is... new to me."
She was treading a fine line. She needed to keep her life a secret, but... she also found a bit of life in this easy conversation.
