It was almost here. The event that had been months in the planning was finally, almost here. There had been laughter, there had been tears. There had been many late nights sewing, planning, embroidering and embellishing, talking and soothing fears. Maeri looked absolutely stunning. Her dress was finished and gorgeous. The veil was nearly done. But Amarissa saw the tension and worry gathering in her friend's features.
So it was that on this day, she woke her friend, made sure she had breakfast, and whisked her away for a day of shopping. They didn't really need anything for the wedding. At a week away most everything had been bought already by the servants of both families.
Amarissa gleefully led her towards the Damascus markets, seeing the Ammun one in her mind's eye, she was sure there would be lots to distract Maeri with.
She was then reminded of the more reserved, circular nature of Damascus' market district and frowned slightly. Well this was less than ideal. Oh well, it wasn't like they had time to travel to Ammun. This would have to do.
Making sure her friend kept up, Amarissa soon had them looking though a selection of mitpahaths. "Oh, this one is pretty! What do you think? It really brings out your eyes" Amarissa noted as she wrapped it gently around Maeri with an encouraging smile.

As her wedding approached, Maeri was growing more and more uncertain about how she should feel about things. Some days she was so excited that she was finally going to be a wife, and be seen as a grown-up woman. Other days, she was so nervous about the responsibilities she was going to have. Would Amiti find her a suitable wife? Would she be able to take care of their house and their children? The closer the wedding got, the more such worries were overtaking her excitement at the day.
That morning when Amarissa had arrived to take her shopping, it was exactly what she needed. Amarissa always knew how to make things better. She had rushed through breakfast, practically bouncing at the idea that she and Amarissa were going to go out and explore the markets of Damascus. It was still so strange to think that this was going to be her home now. Everything was still new and fresh and exciting.
Soon they were hurrying towards the market. Maeri’s eyes flashing in excitement about all the possibilities. If Amarissa was somewhat disappointed at the size of the market, Maeri didn’t notice. She was looking everywhere, at all the different things before Amarissa dragged her over to a stand of mitpahaths.
She smiled and blushed at Amarissa’s compliments. The bright blue mitpahath did match her eyes. The woven pattern of flowers was very pretty. “Oooh I like it!” She took the cloth, intending to purchase it later, then notice another piece of cloth on the same table. It was a deep red mitpahath with a triangle pattern woven into it. She held it up in front of Amarissa, trying to gauge how it fit with her colors. “What about this for you. I think it brings out the color of your cheeks.” It also kind of matched the color of her lips, but that seemed like it would be a weird thing to say. She vaguely wondered if Amarissa’s lips might be as soft as this cloth. That was also a weird thought.
She glanced around, looking for something else to talk about. She idly picked up a long gold pin used to secure the head coverings, not paying much attention to the metal butterfly decorating the end of it. “What about this to go with it?” she said, trying to think of something else, something normal. Hopefully, Amarissa couldn’t tell the thoughts going on behind her eager smile.

Amarissa grinned when Maeri agreed with her selection but found herself blushing slightly when Maeri found a red one for her. She hadn't used red much, normally tending towards blues and greens. But now that she tried on the suggested mitpahath, she supposed it did contrast nicely with her hair. She wasn't sure if it was something her father or mother had said at some time when she was younger, but she always felt the color red was a bit...naughty. Still, it was just the two of them shopping today. Perhaps she'd buy it and keep it their little secret.
She glanced at Maeri as the young woman played with the different pins and accessories. "Oh that's beautiful" Amarissa nodded. "Though I think the butterfly would suit you" she pointed out. "Here, let me" she offered and rearranged the blue one she'd already put on her friend. Tucking the pin in appropriately, her hands flitted past Maeri's face as she arranged everything. "There" she said, nodding at her work. She looked at the merchant. "Isn't that just lovely?"
She grinned and then turned to look through the other beautiful cloths, her smile fading slightly as memories of her and Mazel floated through her mind. The laughter, the giggles, the almost kiss. She banished the memories and tried to make it look like she was merely concentrating on comparing the different options.
She pulled out a few options and practically skipped back to Maeri's side. "What do you think of these? You'll need a few for your new wardrobe" she pointed out.

Maeri couldn’t help but smile as Amarissa agreed with her selection of mitpahath. She was just so beautiful in it. Maeri was certain that she could never be as elegant and graceful as her friend. It was something Maeri had never been good at. She always felt so awkward in her own skin, like she was only pretending to be any good at anything she did. Amarissa seemed to take to these things naturally.
What surprised her was that Amarissa seemed to have not noticed this. When Amarissa arranged the new scarf and secured it in place with the butterfly pin, she looked very impressed with how good Maeri looked. Maeri was less convinced that she looked so good not being able to see for herself, but she smiled broadly anyway. She always enjoyed shopping, and Amarissa was making it such pleasant company. If only she could bring the woman with her when she got married.
As Amarissa went to look at even more of the colorful garments, Maeri was drawn to more of the highly decorated fastenings. She found another that had little flowers on it arranged in semiprecious stones. She was considering that maybe she should ask for Amarissa to swap it out with the butterfly pin, when Amarissa came back with a handful of other mitzpahaths.
Maeri dug through the pile excitedly, pulling out first a deep green cloth and then one in a sheer golden yellow, the final to catch her eye was a blush pink. It hadn’t occurred to her that she might need new clothes now that she was going to be a wife. “Do you think? I hadn’t considered that I would need more clothes. What if Amiti wants to pick them out instead?” It was so hard knowing what to do in a marriage. She had to anticipate what her husband might want.

Amarissa laughed at the suggestion that Amiti might want to pick out the clothes. "Him?" She said with a small laugh and covered her mouth with her hand. "Husbands don't want to be bothered with things like picking out clothes for their wives" she assured her friend.
"Besides, he's a good man but really, he's a man, he'd be more likely to dress you in a scroll than a mitzpahath like..." she dug through the pile and found another golden yellow one that had a deeper hue than the first that Maeri had found. "This!" she said with a grin as she draped it over her friend.
She glanced behind Maeri at the pins and clips that were arranged. "Did you find one you liked better?" she asked excitedly and pointed back towards the table.
Eventually after more looking and eventual haggling with the shop keeper, they moved on to the next few stalls and browsed through the wares. "Have you gotten to see the house yet?" she asked in a conspiratorial tone. "Husbands make a new one when they get married right?". In truth she didn't know if Amiti planned to live in a new house or bring Maeri into his father's household. She truly hoped for Maeri's sake that it'd be a new one. It was hard enough being a new wife she imagined, she couldn't fathom trying to find one's place around established servants and set patterns of how a household was run. On the other hand, perhaps that would be easier for Maeri after all. She supposed time would tell.
