Oh, the Agora. A wonderful place full of overpriced jewelry, merchants from ‘a far off land’ reselling goods at a ‘bargain’ and a contest of merchants trying to shout over each other to win the attention of a prospective customer. It was a home away from home- though there were far fewer drunk people.
It was on this day Eliana was off perusing the various tables. It was her day off, and she could have spent it on a carriage ride back home as she had a few days off. That would be what the other girls would do in her position. But Eliana was smart- and completely lied about when she was off to buy herself another day in the capital free of responsibility, where she could shop her heart’s content and not feel an ounce of guilt of having lied to her father. (Because why would she?)
It was a lovely day. It was warm, and the rays beat down and kissed her skin. It was fun too, arguing and bartering with the merchants who were otherwise unused to a seemingly noble lady trying to talk them down on prices- and calling them on their bullshit of upselling her just because of what she wore. She didn’t need anything here, of course. She just wanted something to do.
Dark eyes bounced from table to table as she flitted to and fro- before they landed on one with jewelry. Now, Eliana wouldn’t call herself spoiled. If she didn’t have these items she wouldn’t find herself in pain. But she found great joy in spending her father’s coin- and though she might not be able to waste it quite as well as Pallas could- she did find that every extravagant item she did buy as a sort of… fuck you to him. So off she floated towards the table with little care in the world and a coin purse that was about to be much lighter.
And that’s when she saw him. Lord Achilleas. She had seen him before, of course. At court and then now more recently with Lady Theodora. He was nice enough, and certainly very handsome and when he stood next to Theodora Eliana was reminded about how freaking unfair life is. Seriously, the pair were practically gods. Then there was Eliana in the background waving her arms all like hey look at me melding into nothingness as their freaking beauty blinds the world. It’s cool. Eliana so wasn’t jealous or anything. Nope. It’s fine.
Anyway, the Lord seemed to be looking at two different jewelry pieces. One was worse than the other- but neither was good. At all. “Is that for Lady Theodora?” Eliana did her best to control the tone of her voice- but she really hoped to god the answer was a no. In fact… “Pardon, my Lord, but if it is might I suggest something that… she would actually want to wear?” Harsh? Maybe? But Eliana didn’t want to have to make it disappear or worse- Theodora wears it out of guilt.

The agora was admittedly not Achilleas’ natural habitat. He had never been one to find any kind of distraction in the many stalls and traders that set out in the central square and usually was only found there if he’d been dragged along by his cousins -or gods forbid, sister- as an unwilling chaperone. Out of character then, that he’d ventured there voluntarily on this particular day.
But the Mikaelidas lord had found himself with a lot more free time on his hands all of a sudden, his actions at the senate meeting leading his father to air his disapproval in all but snatching the barony back from his eldest child. He had not done it in any official capacity, had only expressed his displeasure privately within the family. Achilleas kept telling himself that he should be grateful for that, but it was still a cutting move and one that had served its purpose in reminding him how beholden he was to the man.
It left him in an uncomfortable position. His true belief was that his cousin had been unfairly judged, and the Mikaelidas heir tended to steer true to what he considered right and just. But equally, he had not found himself having to place himself so squarely in opposition to his father before, and that was no easy thing to do either. He’d taken himself out of the archontiko early just to avoid running into the man.
Which was in part how Achilleas found himself at the agora, standing before a stall bearing golden trinkets and brightly coloured gemstones. He’d been toying with the idea of getting something for his betrothed, had even gone so far as to speak to her sister about what she might like and at the time Achilleas had thought it would be a simple enough endeavour. Now though, as he stood and gazed down at the jewellery before him, he was coming to see that he’d been mistaken.
Gold, silver, bronze...so many different stones, and he’d been looking for something with a lion, but the closest thing here was what looked like one of those scrawny Egyptian cats. He frowned, reaching uncertainly for the piece when a voice stopped him, and the Lord turned sharply, pulling his hand back as his gaze came to land on a vaguely familiar face.
‘Is that for Lady Theodora?
He knew the Lady Eliana in passing, had never paid overmuch attention to her until he’d come to realise she served as one of Theodora’s retainers. Now their paths kept crossing, and the fact he knew her to be close with his betrothed made him want to win her favour.
‘Pardon, my Lord, but if it is might I suggest something that… she would actually want to wear?’
“Lady Eliana, good day to you.” He flashed a brief, polite smile before returning his attention to the jewellery. "No, no it’s not." he’d answered without thinking because the way she asked the question left little room for doubt that those pieces he’d been looking at it did not pass muster. The Lord glanced sideways at the Kassotis girl. And then as Achilleas belatedly realised that it wasn’t any better to be thought buying jewellery for anyone else, he frowned a little and corrected himself.
“Oh, alright. Perhaps it was, but I am taking from your expression that it would not be to her taste?”
He could admit to himself that the spere of buying jewellery for the object of one’s affections was not one he’d had cause to find himself in before now, and perhaps it showed. He’d not considered there would be so many potential pitfalls to what was supposed to be an expression of his feelings toward Theodora.
The Mikaelidas lord clasped his hands behind his back and pressed his lips together as he looked back over the stall’s wares. He certainly didn’t want to get this wrong. Swallowing and not quite managing to disguise his bewilderment with the array of goods before him, Achilleas twisted to look at Eliana once more.
“If you have some insight I would not be...averse to some assistance?”

Swallowing and not quite managing to disguise his bewilderment with the array of goods before him, Achilleas twisted to look at Eliana once more.
“If you have some insight I would not be...averse to some assistance?”
No, no it’s not.
The only response to that was an arched brow as Eliana waited for him to correct his statement- and he had better correct that statement. Luckily enough, Achilleas came to his senses and frowned, looking back down at the jewelry. Well, that was good. Eliana was not prepared to tell off the Lord for not only getting another lady jewelry but getting ugly jewelry at that.
Eliana gave him what could only be an amused smile when he said he wasn’t averse to some assistance and leaned forward, over the table to take a look at these jewels.
From her eye (which, to be fair was only trained by shopping far too often and not by any real practical means) the jewelry had a range of quality- none of which was necessarily fantastic. The man, himself, looked quite annoyed at Eliana having stopped Achilleas from purchasing the jewelry. He was dressed flamboyantly- which coming from Eliana who grew up in Argothia that was saying something. Colors were clashing left and right as if he was trying to give off the appearance of a rich, reputable merchant but he clearly had no taste when it came to fashion.
“Oh well, how about this bracelet.” He brought forward a bracelet- fairly simple in make with the two silver ends encircling a simple pearl, a clean bracelet but otherwise nothing of note except… “The finest silver from Egypt, and for you, my Lord and Lady, only three drachmae…”
He continued to rattle on how he wouldn’t offer that to just anyone, but people of importance deserve special prices blablabla. Eliana stopped listening because she knew one thing: This bracelet was not worth three drachmae, no matter how honeyed his words were.
“Where in Egypt is the silver from? Which province?” Eliana cut him off to ask. “Luxfa? Giza? I hear Walek has the most amazing of metals…”
“Well of course it’s Walek, my Lady. I would only offer the best for people such as you-”
“Walek doesn’t exist.” With that Eliana turned on her heel to lead the Lord Achilleas away from that table. Fucking asshole, trying to one-up people just because he thought they were smarter than them.
“That bracelet wasn’t all that nice anyway,” Eliana said to Achilleas as she walked towards another jeweler’s table. “But he at least was on a better track of going a little more simple and classy. Lady Theodora beauty is natural, and her jewelry should be used to draw attention to that- rather than call attention to the piece itself. It’s my personal opinion that she looks the most stunning when she uses simple pieces when her makeup is light, and she just appears… elegant. Lady Theodora isn’t like everyone else, her pieces don’t need to make a statement, she’s a statement herself.” Eliana meant that- and with only a little jealousy from her part. Really the jealousy came from the fact that Theodora’s looks were natural and she did next to nothing to maintain it, where Eliana had to work her ass off to look this fabulous. Ah well, better to love than to hate.
