Never in all of Marietta’s years had she seen snow quite like this. It wasn’t the simple flakes that would occasionally fall to the ground. It was cold, it was white, and it was fluffy. It was, bar none, the most beautiful thing that Marietta had ever seen. She felt like she was in a wonderland, as the small flakes actually stuck to the ground instead of melting away the instant it touched. And while the home had every fireplace lit to keep the house warm (something that was desperately needed- never had Athenia been this cold before), all Marietta wanted to do was to go out and run like she was a child.
Decked in furs she never thought she would wear unless she was visiting Colchis, Marietta ran around her house looking for someone. Evi was gone with her friends, Sanasa as well. Marietta thought to leave to go find Sofia and force her on an adventure (something that just might kill her with shock- Marietta and adventures only belonged in the same sentence if the word hates was in between), but she much preferred to be with family. It was a pity all her sisters thought it would be better to have fun without her.
Well, all but one!
“Hebe! Hebe, Hebe!” Marietta called out to her, far more childish and excited than she would normally. Marietta grabbed her little sister’s small hand and pulled her towards that door. “We’re going outside.” Not that she expected Hebe to object at all. This was the magic of snow- beautiful and exciting and everything Marietta ever dreamed.
When she stepped outside the wind bit at the exposed flesh on her face. Marietta could handle a small chill, it was not as if Athenia was immune to that. But cold was something else entirely. Once more she was grateful for the furs, and for only a brief second she wondered how on earth the commoners who never had the potential of visiting Colchis would survive this bitter weather, but just as quick as she thought that she forgot it. Instead, Marietta was lost in the mystical world in front of her.
It was so soft and fluffy, and each step she took caused the snow to crunch beneath her feet. It was almost like sand, except for the fact that she would sink slightly as she stepped on it, leaving a footprint size hole behind her.
She had to paint this. This beauty- this world, everyone deserved to see this. Was this a reflection of Mt. Olympus the gods were bestowing them? Is this what they see upon that peak? Even the breath as it left Marietta was beautiful, it being so cold she could see it.
“Hebe, I heard that children in Colchis build these little statues out of snow! They stack one big snowball ontop of another and make a little man! Do you think we have enough snow for that?” That would be taking her art to the next level- using nature to create it!

“Hurry up!” Hebe snapped. “I want to go outside before it melts.” Snow was rare in Athenia, so rare that the eleven-year-old had never seen it before. She was afraid that if she didn’t go outside soon, it would be gone again. This winter was colder than any she had experienced. The young brunette had taken to dressing in a couple of himations over a peplos over a chiton, but she never seemed to get warm. The beautiful fall of snow she had seen from her window was worth all the discomfort.
Her servants were taking forever to wrap her in furs, but she tried to stay as still as possible. Hebe wanted to bounce up and down with excitement, though that would make the process even longer. What would it feel like when she stepped on it? Would it hold its shape or melt in her hands? Some friends of hers had been to Colchis and had described snow to her, but the reality was far better than the images her imagination had conjured up. It covered the ground in a blanket of shimmering white. It was if magic had transformed the world into a magnificent fantasy land.
As soon as the servants were done, Hebe ran out of her room as quickly as she was able in the thick furs she wore. They were so heavy she was afraid she might fall over and then how could she enjoy the snow? She didn’t really care if her sisters joined her or not. The young girl was accustomed to playing by herself. Sanasa was always off somewhere, and Marietta and Evi were hunched over books. She had learned to entertain herself.
As she was heading toward the door, she heard Marietta’s enthusiastic voice and turned toward her. It looked as if she wasn’t going to be alone after all, which made her even happier. “That’s where I’m heading,” she grinned as her sister grabbed her hand and pulled her outside.
Hebe gasped as the chill wind hit her face. It was freezing, but who cared when the snow was so splendid? Following behind Marietta, she saw the footsteps she left in the soft substance. Letting her sister's hand go, Hebe ran back and forth, laughing at all the small prints she made.
Impulsively, she lifted her head, opened her mouth, and stuck out her tongue. Cold flakes landed upon it and melted as soon as they touched. It was quite a pleasant sensation, though extremely chilly. While looking up, she noticed the ice hanging from the branches of the trees. They were shaped like elongated triangles and the edges looked really sharp, like knives made of crystal.
She was about to point them out to Marietta, but her sister started talking about making little men out of snow. Of course, her sister would think about art. She always did. It sounded like fun. “We can try,” she replied, bouncing ahead of her sister and jumping in the snow just because she could. Laughing in delight, Hebe spun around and around and around. Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell on her back in the cold fluff. “Oops!” Surprisingly enough, it didn’t hurt at all.

Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell on her back in the cold fluff. “Oops!” Surprisingly enough, it didn’t hurt at all.
For a second and only a second Marietta’s heart stopped when Hebe slipped. Ice had made the ground slick, and a bad spill would quickly put this fun to an end. But Hebe had fallen into the snow and it caught her like a pillow. Fluffy and white and completely foreign to Marietta, she hadn’t thought it would catch Hebe as she did. Seeing her sister unharmed, Marietta for once didn’t turn to scold her. She didn’t tell her to be careful, nor did she tell her to not run where there’s ice.
Instead… Marietta laughed. And once she started laughing she couldn’t stop! She grabbed her stomach, holding her sides, but the laughter kept spilling out of her mouth. This all was just so silly. All of this… beauty made her so happy. She couldn’t understand why the Colchians always seemed so stoic and serious when they had this to bring them so much joy.
“Get up, clumsy!” Marietta offered her hand to her sister, helping her to her feet should she choose. “Your fur’s all wet now!” No matter, it was going to get wet inevitably. As long as Hebe stayed warm that was fine. If she got sick Marietta would feel horribly guilty.
“C’mon! Help me with this!” Marietta gathered some snow in her hand. It was cold, but as she squished it together it was hard and stuck together. “I hear you start out small, and then as you roll it in the snow it gets bigger and bigger.” Marietta crouched and started gathering the snow forming one ball. She looked around their vast yard. So if they roll it, will it grow larger?
“Help me push Hebe!” Marietta said as she started to push the ball. It was slow at first, the snow seemingly not wanting to cooperate. But as she got in a rhythm, the ball got larger and larger until it looked like it would be a good, sturdy base. Marietta’s eyes got large and wide. It was like sculpting! Except much easier and something a woman could do. Marietta had always wondered what it would be like to sculpt. This was her chance now! She would make the most beautiful snow sculpture that ever existed- mark her words!
“I’m going to make another ball to put on top of this one,” Marietta said chipperly. “We should find decorations for it! Maybe one of the servants has some spare cloth we can make into a scarf!” Would their mother let them use some loose gemstones? Was that too much? Probably, but if she got mad Hebe could convince her not to be right? She had the most adorable smile. “Maybe loose gems? We could give it a necklace! Or… or… what do you suggest, Hebe?”
The whole time Marietta was babbling she had started rolling the second ball, smaller than the first so that they could stack it on top of it. Should they do three? Marietta had always found that doing things in threes was the best aesthetically speaking.

Marietta laughed at her.
Usually, being laughed at would make Hebe mad, but it was kind of silly to fall in the snow. It was very cold, but soft like a blanket. Would there be a Hebe-shaped print in it when she got up? She was not really in any hurry. Lying in the snow was an interesting feeling.
Her sister laughed and couldn’t stop. Making a fool of herself was worth it if Marietta laughed. She was usually so serious, like she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders. It warmed the youngest Antonis girl’s heart to see her so happy. And her laughter was infections. Hebe began to laugh too. If Sanasa or Evi or their parents were to come home now, they would think they had gone insane.
When Hebe’s laughter subsided, Marietta extended a hand to help her up. Before she took it, she impulsively spread her legs and brought them together again while raising her arms from her sides to over her head. What would the Hebe-print look like now? “I’m not clumsy!” she insisted as Marietta assisted her to her feet. “I slipped.”
Looking down at the place where she had lain, her eyes widened. “Look Marietta! The indentation I left behind resembles a princess with wings! You should make one too!” Yes, her furs were wet now, but only on the outside. The inside was still warm.
Marietta still wanted to make a snow sculpture. Hebe helped her roll a small ball in a straight line, sighing in boredom until she saw how the ball was growing larger and larger as the snow stuck together. Finally her sister announced that it was big enough to be the base of the sculpture.

Hebe tilted her head to the side. “I think we should only use things we find outside to decorate it with. That way it will be a completely natural sculpture.” Though she thought her idea was a good one, the motivation behind it was to avoid getting in trouble for taking things out of the house and ruining them in the cold and snow. Their parents would yell at them no matter how pretty the sculpture was.
Not wanting to be left out while Marietta rolled the second ball, she bent down and formed a small ball of her own, patting it with her freezing hands until it was round and perfect. What do I do with it now? With an impish grin, she drew back her arm and lobbed the snowball straight at her sister.

Marietta wanted the most beautiful sculpture in all the land. She wanted it to be worthy of Apollo’s gaze. Gems and scarves and other things that shined and sparkled were what came to mind. But Hebe did come up with an interesting idea. If they kept it natural and used everything the gods gave them, then certainly there could be no more beautiful snow sculpture in all the land. And… well, their parents wouldn’t get upset at them. There was that too.
“Alright, Hebe. Go look for something we can use for the sculpture! Maybe we can make it into a person. We can use stones as eyes and a smile. Maybe a stick as arms!” That would be the silliest thing in the world. But today was a silly day. Today was a day that almost never happened in Athenia. Tomorrow the snow would be melted away, and everything would be like a dream.
Or maybe this was a dream. How could something be so wonderful and beautiful? How could Marietta be filled with this much joy? It was a fantasy, a magnificent fantasy bestowed onto them upon the gods. Yes, the wind was bitter, as it nipped at Marietta’s exposed flesh. But a bit of pain from the gnawing cold was well worth the fun that she was having. If only Evi and Sanasa were also here.
As Marietta got lost in her thoughts, suddenly something hit the back of her head. Thump. Marietta rubbed it, and could feel the wet snow as it slid down her furs and kissed the back of her neck. Marietta’s gaze found the culprit immediately. Hebe’s grin, mischievous and impish, was like a becon of light pointing her towards the guilty party. “Oh you brat!” Marietta laughed as she stopped rolling the ball. She gathered snow in her hand, packing it into a ball. “This means war!”
Marietta was not one to condone violence of any kind. In this way she was unlike her family, who feared things like swords and knives. But she was an Antonis, and if it was one thing the Antonis knew best it was the art of war. Marietta lobbed a snowball in Hebe’s direction cackling. Marietta ran towards a tree, pressing her back against it for cover.
Should I make a snow fort? Marietta’s eyes looked towards the sculpture she was making. There was enough gathered snow that she could topple it over and hide behind it, when Hebe inevitably compromises her cover. But until then, Marietta had to prepare for the counter assault. The lady once more bent down and gathered snow in her hand. She pressed it together as hard as she could, so that it could stay together as it flew through the air. Marietta’s eyes moved left and right… waiting for the counter assault.

Hebe was glad that Marietta agreed with her idea to decorate the sculpture with items found in nature. Not only would they be spared a lecture from their parents, but if they took gems and expensive fabric out of the house, they would be stolen as soon as the sisters went inside.
It was unlikely that anyone would step on the Antonis property uninvited, but she knew firsthand that some of the slaves had sticky fingers. A few of them had been sold for stealing, though Hebe had never told on them herself. Nothing she had seen them take had been of value, just small objects that were easily replaced. Maybe it gave them comfort to have something of their own.
“I like that idea,” she said of her sister’s description of a person made of snow with stones for eyes and a mouth and sticks for arms. It didn’t sound silly to her at all. It was too bad that the trees were bare. Leaves would have made good hair for their snow person.
As usual, she became distracted and hurled her ball of snow at Marietta. Hebe laughed as it hit her on the back of the head. It took Marietta a moment before she figured out where it had come from. She wasn’t mad at all. To the young girl’s delight, she declared war, abandoning her sculpture to make a small ball which she then tossed at her. Hebe jumped out of its way, and stuck her tongue out. “Missed me! You’ll have to do better than that.”
By the time she had formed her second snowball, Marietta had disappeared. She’s hiding from me! If she hadn’t let her out of her sight, then she wouldn’t have been able to conceal herself so well. Hebe grinned and walked slowly around the area, every now and then stopping to add more snow to her weapon. This was like playing hide and seek, which she was quite good at because she could remember every child’s favorite hiding place no matter how long they went between games.
Oh! There was a bit of fur sticking out from behind a tree. Now she knew where Marietta was. There was no way she would be able to sneak behind her without being seen, so she ran toward her sister’s hiding place at full speed, ready to pitch her snowball as soon as Marietta emerged, assuming that she would.

There was calm. There was peace. Everything changed when Hebe attacked.
From the corner of her eye Marietta saw it. The tiny figure of Hebe running towards her. Well… running was a bit of an understatement. She was more dragging along the snow, feet having to lift up high with each step. It would be adorable if this wasn’t war. And if there was one thing an Antonis took seriously: It was war.
She gathered as much snow as she could, filling her arms with it, and when Hebe got close Marietta finally jumped out from her cover. She was ready for the first snowball to hit, but as Hebe threw it Marietta dropped the mound of snow she was holding ontop of her sister. “Got you!” She giggled as she just bent down continuously scooping snow and tossing it at her like it was water to splash.
Marietta couldn’t stop laughing the entire time. She felt so light, as if she was a cloud floating in the sky. She couldn’t remember the last time she had so much joyous, carefree fun. She couldn’t remember the last time she decided to discard propriety and what was proper and just… played. Marietta was a ball of anxiety and fear always, but right now she was none of that. It was like she was a kid again, even younger than Hebe was right now. She was nine or seven, when adulthood seemed so far away, and the stress of life was nothing. Marietta had no responsibilities. She was free. Free with her sister, exactly who she wanted to be with.
Marietta finally fell onto the floor just as Hebe had and stared up at the sky. The snow was cold, but after so much moving it was refreshing. Marietta’s cheeks were bright pink and chapped and she was sure soon they’d be rushing inside to be by the fire. But not right now. Right now she looked up at the bright sky as snowflakes continued to gently fall down above us.
“Come here, Hebe!” Marietta said as she pointed at the sky. “Look at it from this angle. It’s so pretty!”
Marietta wanted to remember everything about today. She wanted to remember the first time she looked out her window and saw nothing but white. She wanted to remember playing with her little sister, throwing snow at each other, and attempting to make a sculpture. And she wanted to remember this. The picturesque sky above them as the snow gently fell to the ground. Marietta would paint this- she’d paint all of this. That way when their memory faded and the beauty was lost, she could look at the portrait and remember how perfect this day was.
