Evi had walked to her sister’s room, and then backed away again, and then forwards.. and then away… rinse and repeat. She had been working up the courage after the last couple of days and had yet to actually find enough to knock on her sister’s door.
A few days ago, Marietta had come home, hand tightly around Hebe’s wrist, from (Evi guessed) the royal palatai. She had overheard every word of their conversation. From don’t tell mum and dad, through Elias becoming king and murdering Emilia, and everything else that followed it. Evi had already been subject to a frank conversation with Marietta about Elias… and Evi had even gone to the palace herself to warn Emilia of what she knew about Elias. But to hear the same type of response come from Hebe’s mouth was like a kick in the gut. And it had been days that Evi was mulling over all her sisters had said to each other, as she hid behind one of the walls in their house. She wondered if there had ben a confrontation between the three of them and, if so, what had been said.
Hebe hated Elias, and even thought of him as willing and able to murder. And Hebe worked in the palace with Emilia, she probably knew things, more things than Evi knew. And even Marietta’s response was not so sure as she knew Elias wouldn’t murder for the crown. It had been a question, her voice cracking as she spoke. It felt a little like betrayal, though Evi didn’t know why it felt that way. She knew some dark things about the man, but she still… well she loved him.
Love. It was as simple as that.
The way they talked about him was as if he was a monster. Evi knew of the lack of food in the city, the starving commoners, the protests and riots that were more regular than not. Elias, self-proclaimed would-be king, was doing nothing to feed the starving people.
Worse… the Queen was alive, according to Hebe. The youngest of the Antonis siblings was many things, but she wasn’t a liar. Even she wouldn’t dream up something so fanciful just for the sake of causing more drama. It must be true - Evi was inclined to believe her little sister. But it was supposed to be a secret… why? There was so much duplicity, in amongst everyone else. Evi almost wanted to gather everyone into a room and lay their cards out on the table.
Walking back down the corridor to her sister’s room, she steeled her stomach and swallowed any doubts and misgivings. After a deep breath she knocked on the door to Marietta’s room and, without waiting for a response, she pushed down on the handle and opened the door a fraction. Popping her head around the corner, her eyes met her older sister’s, “Are you busy? Do you mind if I come in?”

Popping her head around the corner, her eyes met her older sister’s, “Are you busy? Do you mind if I come in?”
Marietta’s mind had been whirling since her conversation with Hebe. The Queen is alive. Elias was at fault for so many things- it was time Marietta faced that fact. And now, in the dead of morning, her father had left to see to the fire of Aetaea. Marietta knew the fire could have began innocently. They were in the middle of a heatwave. And yet she still found the timing suspicious.
Did he attack the province?
Such a foolish thought. Why would he attack Aetaea unprovoked? Well… not completely unprovoked. Marietta and Hebe had insulted him in public, but that wouldn’t be the reason. Even if all the other rumors were true (and with each day that passed, Marietta believed them more and more) that response was extreme. The fight had to be coincidental… or there was another reason.
All this kept Marietta from sleeping. Something was coming- something big, she was sure. But what? She didn’t know, but this ominous feeling took over her and she just couldn’t shake it. Athenia wasn’t the happy place it used to be. It was hurting, it was suffering… and there was nothing that Marietta could do to stop it.
She tried to sit at her paints or at her harp. Art was always something that brought her joy. And yet, she stared at a blank canvas with nothing coming to her. For hours she sat and stared, reaching into the depths of her mind and coming up with nothing. She couldn’t create beauty when there was none to be had. Instead, her mind remained on her best friend- and the pain that so many people around her felt. And thus an empty canvas stared back her- as empty as the world around her. Hollow. Without substance.
Perhaps it was a blessing when there was a knock at her door. Marietta jumped, the sound bringing her back from her stupor, and without an answer her door opened. Evi peeked her head in, asking if she was busy. Marietta blinked before a smile curled onto her lips, and she gestured to the empty canvas in front of her. “You tell me.”
The laugh was easy, and needed, as it bubbled from her lips. What Marietta desired most right now wasn’t to create- but to be distracted. Evi could easily do just that. And so Marietta got up and started to clean the various paints around her. “Sit, I’ll be there in a moment,” Marietta said, and then glanced at the servent. “Could you make us some tea? Sage, please.”
It took not even a few minutes to clean her station, it wasn’t like she had done anything to begin with. She moved to sit in a chair in the small sitting area connected to her bedroom. “What’d you need, Evi?” Marietta asked before hesitating, “If it’s about the book I borrowed- I haven’t finished it yet. Things have been on my mind. But you can have it back if you want.” Though… it likely wasn’t about that. Marietta just hoped… it wasn’t about Elias.
But then again the world did seem to revolve around him.

But then again the world did seem to revolve around him.
“Well I’m coming in if you want me or not, I suppose,” the younger of the sisters teased. She raised the bowl in her hands, “I brought dates.” It seemed to be a tradition between the two girls. Whenever one of them had something serious to talk about, they would bring something sweet to the other’s room. Evi guessed it started as a tactic to butter the other party up, and sometimes it had worked. Now, it just seemed to be the done thing, like when Marietta had brought hard-boiled sweets into Evi’s room with the aim of talking about love and relationships.
Directed to sit by her sister, Evi made her way over to the plush seats and sat down, placing the bowl of dates on the table between the two seats. The servant left to make the tea and Evi twiddled her hair in silence while she waited for the servant to return. The Antonis servants knew their place, and knew to remain silent when they overheard gossip or news from family discussions, but what Evi wanted to talk about probably pushed it too far, so she said nothing as she waited for the servant to return. When she did, Evi directed her to place the tea on the table with the dates and then dismissed her.
Marietta wasn’t far behind in joining Evi in the chairs. The room was relatively untidy still, but that just seemed to be Marietta’s way, what with her constantly doodling or painting whenever the urge struck her. Evi admired some of the paintings. “I like that one,” she said by way of making conversation before jumping straight down to business. She was pointing at a picture of a lynx. Evi wondered if Marietta had gotten the inspiration from their younger sister Hebe’s pet. “You’re really improving. Maybe we should ask father to put some up on the walls, Gods know these are better than some of the artworks we have littering the manor.”
Evi leant forward to take a date and bit into it, savouring the sweet taste as she chewed. Swallowing it, she popped the other half straight into her mouth and licked her fingers clean of the excess syrup that seemed to form on the outside of the dates. She then picked up her cup of tea and brought her legs up so they were curled under her, the tea resting between her hands and on her thigh. “No, it’s not about the book, you can keep that as long as you need to.” Evi responded with a smile.
But then the smile disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. Evi had come up with a thousand different ways to open up a dialogue with her sister over the past few days. She was going to say something important. Something memorable. But she had forgotten it now that she was actually faced with speaking to her sister. “I overheard you and Hebe the other day.” Evi finally blurted out. There was no point in skirting around the truth. If Evi tried to pry, then she knew she would get nowhere: Marietta wouldn’t share information unless Evi came clean about what she knew first. “About the Queen. And…. everything else.”

If Evi tried to pry, then she knew she would get nowhere: Marietta wouldn’t share information unless Evi came clean about what she knew first. “About the Queen. And…. everything else.”
If it wasn’t the immediate climate that Athenia was in that did it, the dates sealed the deal that this would be a heavy conversation. It wasn’t as if the sisters didn’t enjoy spending time with each other- Evi was one of Marietta’s very favorite people in the whole wide world. But the promise of sweets was a tactic all too familiar. The last time Marietta brought them for Evi well… the conversation didn’t end quite well. Hopefully it wouldn’t be a repeat.
When Evi pointed at a painting drying in the corner Marietta smiled. “I painted that for Hebe’s birthday. Well- I wanted to get it to her on her birthday, but I just wasn’t happy enough with it. I hurriedly got her something else while I secretly worked on the lynx.” With everything that’s been going on as of late- she hadn’t devoted quite as much time as she wanted to with her little sister’s present. Still, the majority of Marietta’s freetime was devoted to the painting. She wanted it to be something Hebe would love. “It may be late but I was thinking of giving it to her right before she returns to the palatai. She’s returning the first weekend in Kuklios right? I’ll give it to her then…”
Little did Marietta know the first week of Kuklios she would spend in a bed. But that was later, this was now.
Evi had eventually gotten to the heart of the reason why she was here. I overheard you and Hebe the other day. About the Queen and… everything else. Marietta felt her heart sink and fought the urge to nervously hiccup. Marietta wouldn’t lie to Evi- she never lied to Evi. But this was a difficult conversation to have. Especially since the last conversation about Elias ended so… poorly…
Marietta took a deep breath. If she could talk to Hebe about all of this… she could talk to Evi as well. “Evi you know more than anyone that I do love Elias dearly. He’s been my best friend longer than Hebe has even been alive. And I wanted to believe in him. These rumors that’s been circulating… I wanted them to be lies.”
Marietta gathered both her sister’s hands in hers. “But I told you not to to blindly follow him. I should listen to my own advice shouldn’t I?” That was a bad joke, but it was true. She couldn’t follow Elias blindly when it was clear- even without direct evidence the atrocities he has done. From his behavior at the festival that led to a riot, to right outside the Dikastario, to the famine and… well, now potentially the fire in Antonis lands.
It hurt. This all just… hurt.
Marietta reached over and brushed some hair from Evi’s face. “What’s going through your mind, Evi? How can I help you?” Because as much as Marietta adored her best friend, Evi felt something that was romantic. She lost herself to that man, and gave him something she could never get back.

“Ah, well I’m sure she loved what you gave her and will love this one even more.” Marietta’s talent at art was always something Evi admired and was jealous of simultaneously. Evi had no real talent for the arts, not like Marietta with her drawings or Hebe with her dancing. Evi had talents elsewhere, sure… but she wished she could just get lost in something like painting the way Marietta was able to do. It would be nice, on occasion, to free herself from the world around her and focus on something completely different. Evi only had her books to get lost in, it wasn’t anything to admire like this.
Evi picked up another date, noting that her sister hadn’t taken one. The ploy was an obvious one, one they had both slipped into whenever some serious topic of conversation was needed to be had. She shouldn’t have brought them with her - she had set her sister on her guard as soon as she entered the room because of it. Ah well, the deed was done now and she had uttered the first words of her admission. “I didn’t mean to eavesdrop,” the girl said hurriedly. “I just… you were talking in the hall and I couldn’t help but overhear. I know I shouldn’t but…”
Evi wasn’t often one for gossip. Sometimes, around the right people, Evi loved a bit of mindless natter about the goings on of other people. But that was before she had started spending time with Elias, and being the topic of other people’s conversations. It didn’t feel as good when she knew she was the one being talked about. Even so, she liked most of her conversations to have a bit more body to them - something more than speculation about what other people were up to. And something like this… well she sure as anything wasn’t going to be spreading it around. But even so, she had to know what was going on, especially after hearing what she had heard. She couldn’t just leave it.
“I do know,” she responded quietly as she worried away at a loose thread of material with her fingers. “I know you care for him, just as I… do.. did. I don’t know anymore what I feel, sister.” It was hard to talk about someone and their deeds, especially when that someone had wormed his way so quickly into Evi’s heart. He was Evi’s first, and she… well a part of her still hoped that he would be her last, until the end of days. Though even she knew that was unlikely to be the case. He was not to be hers, and she would not be his.
And with all this new knowledge she had about him - things he had shared with her himself, and things she had either overheard or deduced from the goings on around the city. She picked up another date and brought it to her mouth but then pulled it away, sighing. “I don’t know what is going through my mind anymore…” she replied quietly. She stopped worrying at the loose thread and brought her hand to her head to drag the hair away from her face as she pushed her head back. Evi met her sister’s gaze, “And I don’t know how you can help.”
“Hebe… she’s so sweet and innocent, I don’t think that lying is in her. I have to believe, then, what she said. About… everything.” She took a bit of the date and stared at the plate still sat beside them. “Marietta… the Queen? Really? She’s alive?” Evi didn’t ask what was really worrying her - that Elias would do something unspeakable to her sweet sister Hebe if he found out she knew the truth. She didn’t want to believe it of him. But Hebe was a sensible girl; her head wasn’t in the clouds like others her age. She wouldn’t be frightened if there was no truth in it.

While Marietta might not have romantic feelings about Elias just as her sister had, she certainly understood the feeling that Evi was going through. I don’t know what I feel anymore. Marietta could answer that for her. Hurt, betrayal, anger, confusion, doubt, disappointment, and deep sadness. There was nothing good about this. There was only pain and a scar that might never heal.
While Marietta who was not one for close embraces, she found herself pulling her sister into her arms and hugging her, having moved the plate aside. “Yes, the Queen is alive.” There was no other explanation. This was not something that Hebe would lie about. And the behavior that Elias was showcasing pointed to that conclusion.
What made no sense to Marietta, however, was why she remained away. As the child of the man who sought you abdicate the throne, her father never turned his back on his kingdom. The throne would have went to Elias, yes, but father still would have remained as one of the Heads of Antonis. He would serve the kingdom until his dying breath. And yet Persephone hid herself away, despite being the crowned Queen of Athenia. She had armies at her command, the senate she could summon at a whim. The Stravos was one family of four royal ones. Their power was not equal to the three others combined.
And yet look at how much destruction they caused. Starvation. Riots. The senate had been closed for so long, and when they finally opened nothing had gotten done. How many people have died? From the riots, from starvation? When would it stop? When did Athenia turn from something so beautiful to something so terrifying?
Now her father was going to investigate a province that burned. As she thought previously it had to be coincidental but… what if it wasn’t? What if Elias set an Antonis province aflame? What if if he couldn’t get the throne, so he destroyed what would never be his? Like a spoiled child, which to be fair… were two words that very much described Elias of Stravos.
Marietta wouldn’t pile onto Evi her doubts just yet. With no confirmation from her father, and the rumors of the event not even reaching the capital just yet, there was no reason to hurt Evi more. Especially when everything else was so heavy. Marietta wished she didn’t hear any of that conversation. Though… perhaps it was for the best. Because now she could see the sky as blue, the way it should be.
And yet that same sky was shrouded with so many dark clouds.
Marietta pulled away from Evi and cupped her face. “But father will figure things out. You know him. And everything will get better I promise you. And this hurt that we both feel will go away. And… and I honestly believe he wasn’t always like this Evi. We’re not wrong for trusting him in the past. People change, sometimes for the worse. We both loved the man he used to be. But now there’s no going back.” She said this, but it didn’t help Marietta. She still… felt guilt for once supporting man who did so much harm.
And she could never repent for that. It was her burden that would weigh on her, suffocate her. As it should.

And she could never repent for that. It was her burden that would weigh on her, suffocate her. As it should.
Her sister confirmed what Evi had overheard and the younger of the two sisters nodded silently, trying to digest the information. Even though she had already had a few days to come to terms with the knowledge, hearing it direct from her beloved, and most trusted, sister was something else. Not that she didn’t mistrust Hebe, she did, but Evi knew she might have overheard wrong, or not heard the full story as she eavesdropped from a distance.
Evi sank into Marietta’s embrace, glad for the comfort as she battled with the truth of what this meant for the nation. Or… did it mean anything? Elias seemed to still be running the show, using Emilia as a pawn maybe. She didn’t know just how deep the lies went, and to hear this truth and wonder why it had to remain a secret. Why couldn’t Queen Persephone announce her presence to the city? Why the cloak and dagger? Why the secrets? Evi was just a young girl and naive to the world. She didn’t understand.
“Why doesn’t Queen Persephone reveal herself then?” Evi finally asked the question that had been plaguing her for the past few days. “If she is rightful ruler of Athenia, we could have peace. Everything that has happened, the attacks on the ships, the unrest in the city, all of it…” would it stop if Persephone came back and claimed her throne?
Elias had admitted to some of the things he had done to Evi. He hadn’t sugarcoated any of it, and Evi had often wondered how much had happened that he hadn’t admitted to. All to stake his claim to a throne that he believed was his by right of birth. “If he wasn’t always like this, then when did he change? Why did he change?” They were rhetorical questions, and Evi expected no answer as she muttered them while she rested her head on Marietta’s shoulder.
Evi had known Elias for years, but only from a distance, as Marietta’s friend. She had admired him quietly ever since she was a young girl, thinking him the most handsome man in all the land, always imagining her chance to get to know him. Then, when that chance came, she had been blinded, her tunnel vision only focusing on what she had wanted to see, and looking no further than his kind and gentlemanly affection towards her.
“I think he has ruined men for me, Etta…” she murmured as she pulled away from he sister’s embrace finally, dragging a hand through her hair as she sighed deeply. “I spent so long pining after him…” then she trailed off and grimaced. “I’m sorry… every time I talk to you I somehow end up talking about him.” Evi shook her head, as if clearing that man from her mind. “So father knows? Hebe told him? What does he plan to do about it?” Then, as an after thought, she promised, “I can keep this a secret too. No one will hear it from my lips. We must protect Hebe.”

One after the other Evi was asking questions that Marietta had absolutely no answer for. Why wasn’t the Queen back? When did Elias change? She wished she had these answers, gods how she wished she did. Things may have been working up to this point for months- but to Marietta it felt like it was suddenly all at once. The Queen’s ‘death’, the realization that she was alive, the revelations about Elias, now the fire…
It did frustrate Marietta that the Queen, who rightfully held the throne, was not just waltzing back to the palace and instead of hiding in Gods knows where. She had the military at her control. She had people who supported her, and people who were vehemently against Elias. The Senate voted to have her in charge, knowing full well otherwise Marieta’s father would have passed it on to Elias. It was cowardly her hiding away when so many people were suffering in Athenia. And while Marietta never wished that her father had taken the throne, when faced with the choice of Elias and Persephone… she finally changed her mind. The pressure of being a princess was well worth it if it meant bringing things back to calm peace. Unfortunately, there was no way to change the past. If only @apollo had blessed Athenians with the ability to foresee this. If only the Athenians hadn’t been so blind.
And then on the question for Elias: When did he change? Was it when the law changed? Was it before that? Was he… always like this? Marietta didn’t know. She had trusted him blindly for so long. Marietta thought of herself as a smart, perceptive woman. Instead, she was proven to be the exact opposite of that. And she couldn’t even tell her sister when… she couldn’t answer a single question…
She really failed her siblings, didn’t she?
Sanasa wasn’t friends with Elias like Marietta was. Hebe knew from the start. Evi… Evi trusted him. If Marietta had seen what kind of man he was, could she have protected her? Or could she have changed him? Could she have done anything? And for Evi to say: I think he’s ruined men for me, Etta. Not all men are like him! Right? But to fall so hard and be crushed equally as hard…
“There will be a man, a good man, that will sweep you harder off your feet than Elias ever did. A man that is right for you. A man that you can love with your whole heart and never… never have doubt. Elias tricked us both. But not everyone is like him. Look at dad, look at our cousins, look at… look at Adrestus,” A Dofus, maybe, but not a bad man. “There are good men out there. I promise you that.”
But the questions continued, and once more Marietta found her eyebrows knitting together. “Hebe hasn’t told father yet. He has been so busy. But… but when he returns from the fire, let’s go to him. All three of us, Sanasa too. Don’t you think it’s time we have one family meeting?” Especially because Evi was right- we must protect Hebe. Her being at that palatai where Elias was… scared Marietta more than anything. What if Hebe got hurt? What if she got captured or held hostage to control their father? She was too young to suffer anything that horrible.

One after the other Evi was asking questions that Marietta had absolutely no answer for. Why wasn’t the Queen back? When did Elias change? She wished she had these answers, gods how she wished she did. Things may have been working up to this point for months- but to Marietta it felt like it was suddenly all at once.
