Marietta was very dear to his heart, there was no question about it. Whenever he was with her- life was an adventure and it was so very easy to be around her. She was smart, curious and full of life. Even though the time they had together was fun, however, they were from completely different worlds. Marietta was a royal and destined for royal life, and while Adrestus had been a sailor for most of his years, he was destined to take over his father’s place and be a noble. In Adrestus’s eyes, they had complimented each other. Well, that’s what he had thought for a long while. But now? Things werte changing. Situations were becoming more complex and complicated. Adrestus still wasn’t really participating in Noble life- in fact he was continuing to resist. He wanted to play, to enjoy life, while Marietta was involved more and more in politics. As she should be - she was royal. That was the expectation.
Adrestus saw this happening- and his heart sank lower and lower. Was the future really theirs? Were they being realistic? Adrestus had power over his life still- his father was alive and healthy for now, and he could put things off for a bit. His province was still wealthy and the trade routes and relationships were still going strong. What would happen if he married Marietta? He couldn’t imagine what would become of the province if one of his younger brother’s took over. Would he even fit in to royal politics? Adrestus started to question everything. Of course, he didn’t show this- and went on to be his happy and flirting self. He sent gifts and flowers over to Marietta more and more, however- perhaps a symbol of his anxiety. He did not want to lose her.
That day, the sun was shining. There were very few clouds in the sky, and the clouds that were around were extremely thin. The sky was a drastic blue, with the Merchant stores bursting with life. People going on with their day to day errands. Adrestus could easily pick out his girl from the crowd, and hurried over to her with a grand smile planted on his face. The noble reached out for her hand softly, and with one look knew today was going to be different. “Something is wrong, isn’t there, Beautiful?” He said softly, before glancing around. “Let us go somewhere private.”

The world was changing. It was time Marietta changed with it. The time in front of the Dikastario really opened Marietta’s eyes to the man her best friend was- a monster. They exchanged words, with Lord Adrestus not coming to the aid of the woman he was to be courting. Marietta didn’t necessarily hold that accountable to Adrestus. It was a precarious situation. But Marietta found herself questioning many things, things that usually boiled down to: Is this right? Is it right the way Elias is acting, even though the law changed and put him farther from a throne he thought always was his? Is it right for Attia to burn, even though allegedly the Queen was hiding in those woods? Is it right… for Marietta to continue to be blind and happy, when the world around her falls apart?
Was she blind? Yes, yes she was. But was she happy? That was another question. Adrestus was always a dear friend of Marietta’s. He was so kind, so funny. He just wanted to make her smile and laugh and when she was around him she got nervous. She felt the need to hiccup and blush. He was a distraction. He kept her from seeing the hurt that was around her. The hurt… that managed to effect her sisters. Evi who now sees the man she fell in love with, and Hebe who works in a palatai that’s controlled by a monster. While Marietta giggled with her sailor, her sisters faced terrors they don’t even completely comprehend.
She had no qualms with Adrestus. He was no bad man. (Then again, Marietta thought the same of Elias.) But… he wasn’t serious. He didn’t see the world, in part because he had been gone from it so long. But also Marietta just couldn’t devote her heart to a relationship right now. How could she when so many things were happening around her? Power in Duty, that was the motto of the Antonis. Marietta had her duty and it was to her family. She had to be there for them.
She met Adre at the merchant stores. While it still had people flitting about, it was desolate compared to what it once was. The only ones who could afford food were the rich. And even the food that was sold was no where near the quality that Marietta had come to expect. When did all this happen? She had been watching and observing, but… it really only now started to click.
Could she had done anything to help?
Something is wrong, isn’t there, Beautiful?
Marietta’s eyes returned to Adrestus, to the moment before her. Yes something was wrong. The world was wrong. “Let’s,” She agreed, as she walked with him down the road. They turned a corner, then another, before they had a stretch of stores that were shuttered and closed. The street was empty.
She was quiet for a bit. She didn’t know quite how to explain her feelings. Marietta wasn’t very good with feelings. They were often so confusing. But she had to try. She had to right. “I don’t believe right now is a good time for us… for us to be courting.” She finally spoke. “I need to be with my family. You need… you need to take responsibility. For your people. We shouldn’t be together. Not now.”

Adre really enjoyed Marietta. Her company was easy- they fit like a glove. They seemed to have the same interests, and he valued her mind, and of course body… things were good. He didn’t think things between them could be better. But around them? Athenia was changing. Getting worse. But he couldn’t think of what life could be like without Marietta. He was dumb but he wasn’t that stupid that he saw change. At the same time, he didn’t want to think about the possibility that the changes meant their relationship was changing too. Shifting in place, right from under him.
Marietta arrived, and Adre smiled gently at her. She was gorgeous, as always. But.. he noticed a glimmer of something else. He nodded as he motioned for them to go to somewhere private. They reached an empty side of the street and Adre turned to her, moving a little closer. Her words flowed into his ears like spikes, oozing into him. Time came to a screeching halt, and the sailor’s eyes widened in shock. His mouth fell agape, and he felt completely off his guard. His heart beat started to rapidly beat against his ribs, and his arms slowly moved towards his his hair. “Say that again?” His hands started to clutch his hair, as he felt himself move back and up against the nearest wall. His eyes fluttered away from her. “But…” He couldn’t believe it. She was leaving him. Just like that? “I thought…” He thought they were good. “My people?” He kept repeating her words in a breathless voice, as if he didn’t understand them. He looked over to her.
“Why are you doing this?” He asked, his voice more of his own. Why now? They had so much together. They could weather whatever came at them, they had each other. It was mutual, and he knew she enjoyed him as much as he did. Or at least that is what he saw. He was adventure to her, something that was different that her own life. What about all the laughter? Memories of them together, memories of him wanting to kiss her, so bad that he’d do anything… He felt water welling up in his eyes, and he closed his eyes as tears streamed down. “Marietta… Please… I love you.” His voice was chocked in tears and was barely understandable, his body pressing more against the wall as to keep him from falling to ground. His legs felt weak, and shook as he tried to keep his composure. She wanted break off their courtship?!

This was hard enough as it was. Marietta was not a heartbreaker. And she didn’t want to hurt someone who had been so kind and thoughtful towards her. But… relationships were meant to be serious. Courting was meant to be serious. And as the world unraveled around her, she didn’t find herself growing closer to Adrestus, but apart.
Marietta was not like some of the noble girls who thought that love and marriage was something completely separate, something reserved only for the common born. She saw it in parents, love and marriage. Look at the stars, look how they shine for you and everything you do. Her father once whispered to her mother when he thought his daughters weren’t in earshot. Proof that marriage and love could happen.
But duty was involved with that too. Despite the love that her father had for her mother, he never lost sight of his duty. He always led the Antonis to be fair and strong. When the Antonis got involved in politics, it was always level headed and to be a voice of reason. And what she could see from Adrestus was that he was… neither of these things.
Marietta… please… I love you… That hurt to hear. It honestly did. But she also didn’t… believe it? She didn’t know if he thought he loved her or just wanted to love someone. But either way, it didn’t feel real. If he loved her, he wouldn’t first say it at a break up. And he’d understand why she was doing this. He’d understand… responsibility. He’d understand what she needed.
“If you love me, then you know why this has to happen.” Marietta responded quietly. She blinked back her own tears. Marietta never cried, and she didn’t want to cry here. She wanted to be strong. She wanted to be sure. She wanted Adrestus to understand. He might hate her after this. He might not ever want to speak with her again. But… she at least wanted him to understand. This was not meant to be malicious. And the month she spent with him was fun. It was… a break from the terrible reality that they faced.
But now was the time to acknowledge it.
She felt like she was being cruel. That was never the point. But it’d be worse if she strung him along. It’d be worse if she acted like this was okay. She couldn’t change Adrestus, and as he currently was her parents would never approve of him, nor should they.
After all, as the Antonis say: Power in Duty.

He gripped his hair in stress, looking at Marietta with water in his eyes. He didn’t want her to leave. His heart hurt, everything hurt, and he just didn’t want any of this. Responsibility?! Why was she doing this, he didn’t understand. He thought, or hoped; everything would have been different. They were so good together! They were happy! He loved her… Adrestus listened to her response, and moved to lean against the wall. He knew there was no talking to her, she had made up her mind and that would be that. Adrestus let out a labored breath, and let more tears fall from his eyes. “That’s it then,” He said simply, giving into her. “I don’t want to get in your way,” Adrestus spoke between the tears, letting out a sob here and there. He was an emotional man, and even though they were in public, what was happening in that moment was incredibly painful for him. The sailor couldn’t hold it in.
He looked over at her, trying to collect himself. “I wish you the best in all that you do. You deserve… everything.” Adrestus chocked out, looking as if he was in searing pain. He thought the world of her, and… he didn’t even know how their relationship would be after this. Would they even be friends? Would they simply walk as strangers in the street? Adrestus clutched his chest as he moved away from Marietta. “I….I have to go. Goodbye Marietta.” The noble whispered softly, as he continued to cry. He moved away, and stopped in his tracks. Adre turned to look back to her, and then took a heavy step around the corner. He moved his arm up to his face as the world turned blurry from his emotions, and he sobbed. A world without Marietta? It seemed bleak, and out of everything he didn’t like the change most of all. He felt like he had even lost a friend.
He didn’t stop until he reached his ship. All he wanted was to get home, and not be in public anymore. He sailed to his province, and didn’t stop moving until he reached his home- the Nikolaos abode. He was crying as he walked into the door, and he started to look for anyone who would listen. Adrestus strode towards the direction of Dione while sobbing.
