Eliana had permission to bring Alexei to the palatai. The dog so rarely got to travel and he loved carriage rides. He had spent the entire trip looking at the passing landscape. Eliana loved her family, she did, but her dog was… something special to her. The last remnant of her mother. He was just a puppy when Cassandra died, now he was an old dog that refused to give in to his old age. Sometimes he’d still act like a puppy, playing and being happy whenever Eliana would come home. Other times he slept most of the day away.
She wanted him to see the beauty that was the palatai. Even if he was just a dog and likely had no concept of it, she liked to imagine he did. And Eliana just wanted to spend more time with Alexei. She missed him terribly when she was gone, more than anyone else at the Kassotis. Alexei was loyal. He was honest. He loved unconditionally. He was… innocent.
It was her day off so she was intent on showing Alexei around the palatai. She brought him outside to the gardens, where the flowers were still so beautiful even deep into fall. Alexei looked so happy, and so too was Eliana.
“You’re a good boy, aren’t you,” Eliana cooed at her dog as she got on her knees and pet the fluff ball. He gave a small bark, giving Eliana a goofy smile and licked her face excitedly. He was in puppy mode, happy and excited and sniffing absolutely everything around them. It was then another one of the Queen’s handmaidens walked up to Eliana. “Eliana!” She called over, causing Eliana to stand and turn. Eliana gave her coworker a wave.
“I was wondering if, perhaps, it didn’t bother you if next week we could switch days off. I… had something come up…” She spoke nervously, making some random excuse, but Eliana knew the real answer. She wanted to go out with the boy she fancied. Eliana didn’t blame her. If Eliana had a boy she fancied…
“Sure, no problem.” She said quickly. “But you owe me one.” She teased accepting the hug the girl gave her, before turning around to spend time with Alexei. Only… when she turned she found her dog wasn’t even there. She looked left, she looked right, and she couldn’t find her dog.
“Alexei!” Eliana called out. “Alexei! Come here boy!” She tried clapping, she made kissing sounds, she walked forward. Where was her dog? Shit, shit where was he? Did he run off? Was he lost?
Eliana, flustered as she was, didn’t even notice her wandering into the Queen. “O-Oh!” Eliana jumped. “Sorry,” she said quickly to her friend- obviously flustered which was rather unlike Eliana. “You haven’t seen Alexei have you?” She asked quickly, her trying to control the panic in her voice. If she lost her dog… Eliana wouldn’t know what to do. She’d be a wreck. The last thing connecting her to her mother… gone just like that.

Theodora was out enjoying a walk around the palati grounds, a rare indulgence since the day Achilleas left the capital. It wasn’t often she could find the time to relax and just be, not without an army of courtiers swarming around her and occupying near every waking thought. She enjoyed the outdoors, the smell of the flowers, the feel of the grass beneath her feet. Of course, she couldn’t run through the foliage barefoot as she had often done as a child, but she could still enjoy the scenery in a more composed way… even with the trio of guards that trailed her nearly every movement.
Perking up a little as she caught the familiar sound of Eliana’s voice, Theodora hiked up the hem of her burgundy chiton enough that she could hasten her step to find her and not catch the fabric beneath her feet. However, it didn’t seem she needed to hurry, at all—in the next moment, the other woman was colliding directly with her, a look of worry on her face that had the Queen instantly on alert.
“Eliana, what is it?” she asked, her hands wrapped around the woman’s upper arms to steady her as a frown drew its way across her features. Eliana asked if Theo had seen her dog in a state of panic that had her instantly releasing the woman’s arms and turning around to look. She knew how much that dog meant to Eliana, and she knew how it would crush her if the animal was lost.
“I haven’t, but I can help you look. We all can.” She glanced back at her guards expectantly, the men quick to nod in agreement. Their posted position wasn’t always very exciting, so perhaps a search and rescue would add a bit of variety to their day.
She turned back to Eliana and comfortingly squeezed her shoulder. “We’ll find him, don’t worry. Where’s the last place you saw him? He can’t have gone very far.” With as many men that patrolled the palati grounds, someone had to have seen him. Gesturing for her guards to start fanning out through the gardens, she tucked her arm in Eliana’s and gently urged her forward.
“Come on, let’s go look. He’ll turn up in no time.”
Walking through the winding maze of the gardens, Theodora added her voice to Eliana’s, calling the dog’s name and whistling for him. After a few minutes, she thought she saw a furry little body digging through one of the topiary walls, tugging on Eliana’s elbow and pointing in that direction. “Is that him there?”
One of the guards noticed the animal at the same time she did, walking over to try to grab the dog up before he could go anywhere else. Of course, Alexei seemed to take that as a challenge, his rump going up in the air as he leaned forward on his front paws. With a couple of playful barks, he took off into the nearby woods as if daring them all to chase him, Theodora sighing and shaking her head.
“He’s your dog, all right,” she teased Eliana as the guards took off after him, Theodora going to follow at a brisk pace. “Such a troublemaker.”

There were two ways one could react to the Queen reassuring you and offering to help you. The first, more proper way, was to coo and be like ‘Oh no, don’t worry yourself over me, your majesty. I will be fine. You have much more important things to concern yourself over.’ The other way, and the way Eliana absolutely was going to go with was: Yes, please help!
There was propriety, but that didn’t exist amongst friends- especially on her day off and especially when it was her precious Alexei. So when Theodora offered help and her reassurances, Eliana nodded. Her mind was one track right now. Locating Alexei was of upmost importance. Especially knowing… the trouble the dog could sometimes get into when he’s at his most energetic.
Is that him there? Oh gods, Alexei. Eliana was never going to take him back to the palatai again (not that she would be allowed to after this). He was digging through the walls, making a mess of things. “Alexei! Bad boy!” Eliana called towards him, but the guard was who garnered his attention. He just wanted to play, just like when he was a puppy more than a decade ago. It would be adorable if this wasn’t entirely inappropriate.
“Alexei!” Eliana called after him as he ran into the woods guards chasing after him. As… embarrassed as she was by her dogs behaviors, she did shoot Theodora a very amused look. He really was a troublemaker, after her own heart. Alexei exemplified the Kassotis name.
The pair ran after the dog into the woods, calling his name. Eliana suddenly skidded to a stop though, as she ran through a thicket of trees and saw Alexei just sitting there, his tail thumping on the ground and a goofy grin on his face like he did something good. “Alexei!” Eliana scolded him as she crouched down on her knees to look the dog in the face. “I just bathed you too! Don’t do that.”
Alexei went on licking Eliana over and over again in apology, and Eliana, despite not necessarily being a lover of animals (She liked them- but it wasn’t like she saw one and immediately melted) couldn’t stay mad at him. It was Alexei and he was special.
She stood back up and realize what Alexei had found. “Oh!” Huddled together there were four baby foxes. There was no mother in sight. Were they abandoned? Did the mother pass away? “Would you look at that.”
… Were they supposed to help the foxes? They were foxes, wild animals. It wasn’t like they were dogs or cats or… exotic tigers. (Seriously, nobles were weird.) But also Eliana did feel bad if they didn’t have a mother and they would die out because they’re babies unable to take care of themselves. Though it was presumptuous to assume they didn’t. She could just be hunting.
“Fancy yourself a fox, your majesty?” Eliana joked with her. The Queen of Taengea and her pet fox- that would be a sight.

While this hadn’t exactly been in her plans for the day, Theo was happy to help her friend in her search. After everything Eliana had done for her over the past few years, it was the least she could do. Besides, it cost her nothing to help look for the dog. And it sure beat anything else she was supposed to be doing today.
Her relief nearly matched Eliana’s own when, at last, they caught up to the dog, who was panting and wagging his tail as if nothing had just happened. Theodora chuckled and shook her head, a smirk resting on her lips as Eliana rushed over the dog. The guards, on the other hand, did not look so amused, though she noticed the laugh the most stoic one hid. Who wouldn’t smile at the antics of a dog, and particularly such an adorable one? Theodora had no interest in associating with anyone like that.
Raising her eyebrows at her retainer’s startled exclamation, the Queen walked over to see what it was she was looking at. Gasping softly at the sight of the litter of fox pups, Theodora knelt down next to them to get a closer look. The softly mewling cries tore at her heart, frowning as she reached out a hand to the nearest one. It suckled lightly at her finger, and her face softened before looking back at Eliana.
‘Fancy yourself a fox, your majesty?’
“I mean, we can’t just leave them here,” she answered as she gently picked up the one nibbling her finger. Though her retainer may have been joking, Theodora wasn’t, gesturing for her guards to pick up the other three. “Look how thin they are. It’ll be winter soon. They’ll die.” Cradling the one she held to her chest, she gently stroked the fur on top of its head. “I’ll ask the kennel master to look after them until they get big enough to survive on their own.”
Well, she’d ask him to look after three of them. Looking down at the one she held, her smile brightened. “Between the dog we were gifted at the wedding, Sara’s cat, and these little ones, I’ll have my own menagerie soon.” Touching her nose to the fox’s, she laughed. “Won’t Achilleas be thrilled when he returns, hm? Hopefully he won’t get too jealous.”
Holding the pup out to Eliana, she waved one of its little paws at her. “Look at him. Who wouldn’t that face win over?”

Eliana wasn’t heartless, she was far from it. But also she knew the people who would be doing the real training. The kennel master would watch over it, the maids would clean up after it, and Eliana would have to stress finding an outfit suitable for a Queen that didn’t have fur all over it. Not to mention foxes weren’t exactly the most… domesticated creature to have around. It wasn’t like kittens or puppies. Foxes were wild and much more likely to bite you when unhappy.
Eliana raised an eyebrow at Theodora as she waved the little paw at her face. “It is quite adorable yes,” Eliana said, though she still looked skeptical. The creature was cute. It had a yip that was high pitched, and eyes very large and dark. It even had a tongue similar to a dog’s pant.
But Eliana did not melt at the sight of furry creatures.
Well, within reason. When Eliana first met Achilleas the pair helped save a kitten stuck in a tree. But once more, a kitten was very different from a fox. And Eliana was a lower born noble, not a Queen. The weight on her shoulders were tons lighter than what rested upon Theodora’s. Not that Eliana would say that. Just… well.
“I’m don’t think this is a good idea. I’m not against saving the foxes. But… well, I wouldn’t get too attached to them.” Which knowing Theodora… she would. “When they are big enough to survive on their own they should be set free. Foxes are meant to be wild. Surely keeping them in one place would do them more harm than good.”
Obviously, Eliana was in no position to tell her no. And she wouldn’t tell her that. Just that this was a bad idea. This was a palatai, not a barn. Even if the animals were super adorable and part of her wanted to coo and squish their little triangular faces in.
“Also do you know how much time is spent picking fur from your clothes?” As Eliana said that, she reached over to grab one red strand of fur that came from the fox from her chiton. “It’s already making a mess! You really don’t pay me enough, my Queen.” The last part was a joke- though knowing some of the other workers in the palatai they would have agreed with her. Some people could never have too much money.
Eliana sighed and wrinkled her nose at the furry face as it stared back at her. There were more behind Theodora too. This was a mess. Her gaze flickered up to the Queen’s. “Besides,” Eliana finally spoke again. “You haven’t even given it a name.”
Fuck it all.

Theodora made a face at Eliana as she cuddled the pup back to her chest, rolling her eyes. “Why are you always trying to ruin my fun?” she complained as the guards lifted up the others. “I said I would have the kennel master look after them until they’re old enough to be released. Gods, Eliana.” Sometimes, she wondered if her maids and retainers really thought her so incompetent. She had raised and trained her own horses as well as a sleuth of other animals throughout the years. Did they think her some delicate flower who had no idea what she was doing? That might be true when it came to the weight of the crown, but she did know animals. And Eliana’s resistance only made her more perversely apt to keep one.
Shrugging as her retainer plucked a hair from her chiton, she suggested, “Just let my clothes have fur on them, then. The entire kingdom knows my penchant for horses, so would it really be so shocking?” Lifting a brow at the woman in case she wanted to keep arguing, she went on, “And besides, it’s really not such an uncommon thing for royals to keep ‘wild’ animals. It’s said the Queen of Egypt has her own monkey. And big cats too! At least I’m not doing that.”
Part of her desire too was just… simple companionship. Mostly isolated from her sisters because of her new crown, often held separate from Eliana for the same reason, Achilleas gone, Emilios estranged… Theodora was lonely in a way she couldn’t really describe to the woman next to her. The thought of a new companion to share her time with, one who couldn’t judge her or say snide things about her behind her back, well, it was an appealing one. However furry he might be.
“You know, you could have one too, and our little babies could be best friends and play together. And then you wouldn’t have to harp at me.” Maybe Eliana was just worried she would end up being the one taking care of it, but Theodora would push that responsibility onto Althaia when she wasn’t able to do it herself. The older woman was well-acquainted with Theodora’s more undesirable idiosyncrasies, and it wouldn’t be the first time she’d begrudgingly helped her with such an undertaking. ‘Begrudgingly.’ Althaia often fell as in love with the creatures as she did.
“He doesn’t have a name yet,” she corrected as she stroked the pup’s ears, dewy eyes looking back up into hers as she smiled. “A very easily remedied problem.”
Besides, it couldn’t really be that much different from a dog, could it? Especially if she raised it from such a young age. Truly, stranger things had happened, and Eliana ought to be happy she wasn’t trying to have a lion cub imported from Egypt or something.
