Court was in session, which was lucky because it was the first chance Rafail had to show off his handsome new teeth publicly. Since he had had them straightened and made as perfect of the rest of his face demanded they be, court had not been in session, and he had been just as impatient as a lifetime of coddling had ensured. Besides, he was grown out of that awkward childish appearance in full now, and tall and lanky and almost muscular in a way that girls seemed to like, which suited him just fine, and the Marikas had been eager to take advantage of it.
Blues, he had noticed, suited his complexion nicely, matching neatly with the similar colour in his eyes enough that others would comment to such a degree, and offsetting the gold of his hair. He wore the colour proudly, accentuated it with Marikas gold and allowed everyone to be fully aware of just how handsome he thought himself. One had to start the first court session of the year exactly as they meant to go on, and Rafail knew just how he wished to be perceived.
Once he had exited the carriage behind Papa, and the Marikas family had been announced as appropriate, the sixteen-year-old lord had curved his lips into a bright smile — the kind which made obvious his blindingly white teeth — and entered the fray. A goblet of wine had found its way into his hand, and he took a sip as he approached a gaggle of girls who were gossiping among themselves, ready to let them know that he was both a Baron and a Captain, and at his young age too. He had always been confident with those of the opposite sex but, recently, Rafail had found it infinitely more simple to do, as they appeared to cling to him with ease. He rather liked that.
He was half-leaning against one of the tall stone pillars that decorated the hall, making vague conversation about how much he liked the look of their gowns, and how he would like to get to see more of them soon (a line which they always appeared to like, despite its obvious connotations) when he found his attention drifting across the room. It was not that the man had a weak attention-span, though he absolutely did, and more that he had found something more interesting to look at.
Rafail's romantic interests had generally fallen onto women he had never met before, finding them more interesting because he did not know them, but he supposed that, as he had matured, he had noticed some degree of attraction for his cousin. Or rather, he had noticed the girl was growing up in the same way as he, and he could not help but let his eyes wander as she now entered the room. Speaking to her seemed far more fun now than listening to this short girl — though anyone appeared short since his sudden recent growth spurt — talk about her favourite vendors. He didn't care.
"Uh-huh," he answered, raising a hand into her face to make her shut up, already pushing himself off the pillar. "Maybe tell your friends. I'm busy." Rafail flashed her a smile that was clearly feigned, crossing the great hall to find his cousin and intercepting her before she could speak to anybody less entertaining than he. "Chara. I don't believe we've spoken in a long while, and I think that we might have, mm, plenty to discuss." He could not help but drop his gaze to her chest for a second, as though to clarify what he meant. "Don't you?"

Court had always been an interesting and enthralling part of Chara’s life. Well, soon to be part of Chara’s life. Until recently, there was little more the girl could do but dream about officially being able to attend court. She could see herself there, being every bit Stravos as her mother. When her fifteen birthday rolled around, she could hardly wait for the first court session of the year to be held. Finally, she would not just be hearing about how things went, she could be there. It sounded absolutely wonderful. She dressed in the finest she possessed and went through great length to be as pretty as Mother. She wasn’t sure what to expect, but the stories she heard made everything sound absolutely marvelous.
Admittedly, there was little hearing stories could do to prepare her for how nervous she was.
Chara did her very best not to appear as anxious as she truly was. It would not be fitting for a lady to look so unsure of a place that she would be expected to appear in. Chara had not intended to do much speaking that day. This was her time to learn how the other ladies carried themselves, not to make a fool of herself by misspeaking. There was more than her reputation at stake. She’d heard how quickly gossip spread and she did not want her humiliation to be on the lips of everyone in Athenia. She’d decided to remain visible, but passive as court was held. She did her best to model the way she’d seen the other ladies stand -- tall, confident, and fully aware of their beauty. It felt easy enough.
Seeing as she didn’t expect to have any serious conversation, Chara’s attention was more on catching bits and pieces of the discussions around her. They sounded fairly confusing, but she listened all the same. Who knew if she would hear something interesting? Then she could have a story to tell, rather than just hearing of them. With her attention on everyone else, however, she didn’t see her cousin approaching until he was already in front of her. She tried not to look surprised, but it showed in her face nonetheless.
He was right that it had been a while since they had last spoken. In fact, she really couldn’t remember the last meaningful time they had spoken. She felt that they had only been small children back then. Now he seemed almost like a different person entirely. He was certainly taller. She hadn’t the chance to answer before she noticed where his gaze had turned. Oh. Her cheeks flushed a light shade of pink before she said a word. “I think you might be right, Rafail,” she said gently, “I heard you were made a captain some time ago. How is it?” It was a small attempt to divert attention elsewhere as much as it was a genuine question. He was a man now, after all.

The flush of pink which filled Chara's cheeks was enough to convince the young Marikas lord that she was interested in his affection. Had she not been, then he suspected that the provocative positioning of his gaze was more likely to elicit an angered response rather than coy embarrassment — at least, that was what he had come to suppose from the few women who had (apparently) not enjoyed his attention. This only made him smile further, his hand extending in an offer to take hers and plant a gentle kiss of greeting on her soft skin.
"Oh, yah, Papa had me made a captain a few years ago now," he answered, only slightly raising the tone of his voice to ensure he could be heard by any other ladies who were thinking to eavesdrop on the lord. "I have my own unit, you know? The Murder of Crows. In Thesnia. Maybe you should come and watch us train one of these days. I'm sure you'll be impressed." He shifted his position somewhat, crossing his arms to show off the lean muscles he was starting to build. Really, the training exercises themselves were quite dull, and Rafail suspected Chara had better things to do than watch him not even be the best among a group of older and more experienced men, but he liked to imagine the girl was more interested in looking at in than she would be in them. "I'd love to show you what I can do." He winked, indicating the obvious true meaning behind his words.
Gods, it was lucky Papa wasn't anywhere near, or he would surely have chastised his son for spending his court session chatting up his cousin.
Rafail ran a hand through his blonde locks, pushing them away from his face in the way he often did around girls, and which was the main reason why he had chosen to keep his hair at its current length, rather than cut it shorter as most of the soldiers in his unit appeared to do. "Has anybody told you how beautiful you look today, Chara?" The blonde boy grinned, thinking the compliment generic but excellently chosen. Sometimes, the easiest words were the best for a flirtation. "I heard you'd grown into a lovely lady, but, obviously, stories do not do your looks justice." That was a good line. Rafail would have to remember it for later.
"This is your first time in court, isn't it? I think you're far more suited to it than most of these ladies." Rafail tilted his head back in the direction of the girls with which he'd been speaking previously, ignoring the clearly put-out expressions on their faces. It was not his fault they were dull in comparison. "How are you finding it? I'm always willing to lend a hand if you're nervous." The lord offered her an arm to take, nodding towards the crowd of courtiers. "An escort, if you wish."

Admittedly, Chara knew little about the military or what being a captain meant. What she did know was that her cousin was one of the youngest and that had to count for something. One of, if not the youngest captain in Athenia was talking to her. She hoped it was not just because they had vaguely talked as children. After all, she had been told she had become a beauty in her own right and she wanted someone to notice. It was difficult to tell who was looking her way when she was so focused on avoiding embarrassing herself in court. She found a small bit of relief in the fact that Rafail had approached her. At least now she would not look lost or lonely. That was very important. Being alone was the worst, it made her feel unattractive.
But thankfully, Rafail had shown up to remedy that issue.
She certainly took note of how he showed off, if the increased redness in her face and difficulty making eye contact were anything to go by. The idea of going to Thesnia and watching all of those men train made Chara beyond giddy. And to think only a few years prior she thought boys were icky. How silly of her. It didn’t seem possible for a girl who thought boys were absolutely disgusting could now be standing before one and blushing like a happy fool. And yet, there she was doing exactly that. She would have squealed in delight when he told her she was beautiful if they had not been in public. Squealing was not befitting of a Stravos lady.
“You would be the first of the evening,” she said quietly, “but I should hope you’re not the last.” If Rafail thought she was beautiful, surely there were others here who did as well. She had never known her cousin to have an eye for anything other than the best of the best. And she was a Stravos after all, that meant she was the best. Rafail would have no choice but to notice her. And he had been nothing but a gentleman thus far (admittedly a gentleman that made her blush beyond any reasonable measure) so she had no issue accepting his invitations. “I would love to see how strong you’ve become.” Among other things.
Chara smiled at the other ladies Rafail had been talking to. It was one of superiority. After all, Rafail thought she was far prettier than all of them. He also seemed to know she was nervous. How? “Was I too obvious?” she asked softly. “I am a little nervous but please don’t tell Mother. I want to make her proud.” She gladly took his arm, quietly thanking him for his kindness. “Court is interesting, but I would love it more if you were with me.” It was a subtle flirtation of her own as much as it was true. Try as she might to tell herself otherwise, this was daunting. Thankfully her brave cousin was there for her.
